…and now for something completely different! 1689 - 2022

These arrogant fucking politicians, warlords and religious don't give a fuck about us, they only pretend! Go to hell! They don't know that they are as superfluous as telephone disinfectors and hairdressers! It is to cry for! - RYP

We have a first entry each day that is a picture or a video, and only in that entry you can place your music links and requests (NO ALBUMS RELEASED IN 2020 AND AFTER, AND A DAILY LIMIT OF 3 ALBUMS)! Here you can say what you like, unless it's offensive, racist or discriminatory! Please keep your language polite and respectful. All the rest official posts will only allow comments related to the official posts and such. That way it will keep things much more organized and tidy. Enjoy! RYP and Gyro1966

Rick Roberts – Sandy’s Club, Beverly, Mass. 1974

Sandy’s Club, Beverly, Mass. – March 2, 1974

Acoustic solo performance – Rick Roberts sings a lot, plays a lot, and talks a WHOLE lot.

Rick Roberts replaced Gram Parsons in The Flying Burrito Brothers, and later became the Burritos leader when all original members had left. While still a member of the band, he released two solo albums (“Windmills” in 1972 and “She Is A Song” in 1973) and later went on to be the founding member of the highly successful Firefall.
In the 80s, he was a member of Gene Clark’s Byrds Tribute band.

Nowadays, Roberts’ poor heath condition prevents him from performing live, but he still releases download-only tracks available from his website at

Gaius asks:

When I came across today's share of early Folk music, I wonder what the band's name means: 'The Three City Four'?

First thought was: Ok, there are four members in this band and these four came from 3 different cities.

But I've been in England so often that there was a second thought:

When we're speaking of London, we all mean 'Greater London', the moloch of a city, with about 9 millions of inhabitants. But if you look closer and have a little bit experience in history, you'll see the parts that make up this London. You have the 'City of London', the oldest continual municipal democracy in the UK (established around 1032 B.C.). Today it's the financial district, in the past it was 'Londonium', the Roman settlement. Up to today this district has its own Lord Mayor, his own police and sheriffs, who run the ongoing existence of 'Old Bailey', the National Court.

And second, there's the 'City of Westminster', which had an important status in the past, but it's now just one of the London boroughs, but retains the titular name. Today, it has no more status or responsibility than the other boroughs. Within its boundaries, the City of Westminster has the Palace of Westminster home to the Houses of Parliament – the mother of parliaments; not to mention Buckingham Palace and Saint James Palace, home to the court of Saint James and the cathedral.

So, in the end I thought 'The Three City' indicates London and 'Four' just stands for the four members of the band. Am I right?

Here they are with their first album (male + female vocals):

As an Englishman, I find Gaius's piece on London to be well meant but at the same time, odd. I cannot speak German, but I accept that English as a language can be a tad awkward at times, especially when one is trying to write in it. Most of the claims about London are reasonable but quite a few are incorrect, especially the bit about London being a "moloch of a city", which makes no sense. A Moloch is a bull-headed god/diety. The Lord Mayor does not run the Police force, unlike the US. With regard to what people think the bands name means, I doubt that the average Londoner would even give it a thought. They may well think it a quirky name for a group. The only ones who know for certain are the boys/girls in the band.

You can find translations of the Japaneses symbols (or most any other language) by copying the symbols to Google Translate and pasting them in the Translate box.

Hi Bucephalus...

VERY excited to hear the Betty/Billie/Nina live recordings you posted...but when I tried the link it brought me to a 4CD set of acoustic blues. (Tried it twice to be sure.) Did I miss something...or can you repost? Thanks!

Take care,
J.

Pity Bertrand Russell never faced up to 'the fact' that (functioning) sociopaths and psychopaths (who often become national leaders) do not respond positively to 'love' viewing it as a weakness to be manipulated for their benefit. 'Tolerate' such people at one's peril

Sadly Russell in that answer sacrificed his 'intellect' for his 'morality'

PS And we won't dwell on his one time support for Eugenics, enforced sterilization of the 'feeble minded' (liberal elitists dontcha just luv 'em) and state sanctioned population control or indeed that for a while he believed that a pre-emptive nuclear attack on Russia under Stalin was justified. Strange that for a pacifist (look for a'liberal'and your bound to find a hypocrite).......

Thanks for the Three City Four. I have followed Martin Carthy's career fairly closely but have never pursued this one, so many thanks.

@Gaius given one of the founders of the Three City Four was born and bred in Edinburgh, I think the title simply refers to the fact that the band were born in 3 cities (London, Edinburgh and AN Other). Given the London born members were both born in Middlesex there is little to suggest it has anything to do with the City Of London or Westminster

PS And given that Westminster is the official seat of the the British Monarchy, the seat of the UK Government and Permanent Civil Service and houses both Chambers of the UK Parliament as well as housing New Scotland Yard, home to the Met Police, the main British Theatre district (around 40 venues inc The Royal Opera House, London Palladium and Theatre Royal), Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street (London Fashion Week), Trafalgar Square, The British Museum, The National and Tate Galleries, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Carnaby Street, The Royal Academy of Arts, London Zoo, Covent Garden etc etc etc, the City Of Westminster is still one of the most important political, cultural and tourist destinations on the planet. It is hardly 'just another London Borough' as the intense security of the area (it has literally thousands of security cameras and permanently armed police, unlike the rest of the UK) and millions of visiting tourists will attest to.

You're right. i should have written: the district has ITS own Lord Mayor, ITS own police, ITS own sheriffs. The district has.., not the Lord Mayor.

@Phantom of the Rock Opera

I compared the 'City of Westminster' on the municpal level to the other boroughs of London.Aside from the fact that England is ruled from this place, Westminster as part of London is on the same municipal level as the other parts (let's say the Eastend). Once, in the past, The Westminster Court of Burgesses was established by Act of Parliament in 1585 and ruled this district, following the dissolution of the monasteries (Henry VIII.), filling a power vacuum created by Westminster Abbey ceasing to exert control over the area. And remember, the City Of London and Westminster were geographically quite distinct up to the 16th century.

O.K, I can live with the explanation: 4 members from 3 different cities.

My late great old Audities buddy Jamie LePage was their manager & producer for a while in the early/mid 90s when he worked for Virgin Japan. A year after the Audities power pop mailing list began he was inspired to create & run the incredible Spectropop mailing-list.
