28 years ago, A Surfer's Paradise benefit concert for Don Murray was held at the Strand in Redondo Beach, CA. It was the biggest concert of it's kind, 10 hours long with classic and contemporary surf bands including the Surfaris, the Chantays, the Belairs, the Lively Ones, the Tornadoes, Davie Allan & the Arrows, Jon & the Nightriders, the Eliminators, the Insect Surfers, the Halibuts, the Surf Kings and the coup de grace... the Mermen (Don's favorite band). Three of the original Turtles showed up, Al Nichol, Jim Tucker and Chuck Portz. No... not Mark and Howard (Flo and Eddie). The people that were there for me that day are still there for me. Calexico "The Book And The Canal" 2006

Vinyl format of The Book & The Canal, a tour-only CD originally released in 2005 and available only at the band's live performances have also made available on their website), one live album was a nice treat but nothing compared to 2001’s Aerocalexico and now The Book and the Canal. Truly process-oriented, these collections of works-in-progress and b-side sketches are not proper albums but rather an intimate peek at a band stretching its legs and sussing songs out...
...Book songs like the tellingly-titled folk of "Half a Smidge” and the Duke Ellington-flavoured jazz of "What’s a Little Wait” are informal and loose, while it’d be no shock if "Griptape” appears as is on an official release some time after this spring’s Garden of Ruin. Fans may recognise a mutated version of "Ghostwriter” from the band’s live show, where the song pays greater tribute to Neil Young’s score for Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man. Calexico are more experimental on the found sounds of "Unter Unserem Himmel,” "Electric Relay,” and a creaky, live version of the seemingly improvised "Painted Over.” Though uneven by nature, The Book and the Canal is a pleasant gift for Calexico fans itching for new songs and fresh insight as to how this remarkable ensemble operates. The Revells "The Go Sounds of the Slots!" 1965

The Revells weren't an actual group, but one of the several surf-hot rod acts of the 1960s that were actually comprised of California session players and songwriters. They released one album, a novelty-concept LP of sorts jammed with songs about the then-hot slot car craze. Masterminded by Gary Usher (who produced the record and wrote most of the songs with Roger Christian), it resembles the sounds of Jan & Dean/the Beach Boys circa 1964. Because of the demand for this rare album, a re-issue CD was released in 1995.
The Revells (not to be confused with another surf combo the Revels) were actually a studio project of Gary Usher and most of the Hondells' touring band. Usher was commissioned to create an album around the theme of slot car racing, which was a popular hobby at the time. The "group" took its name from Revell, a manufacturer of slot cars and models that is rumored to have provided some financial backing for the endeavor. The resulting 1965 album The Go Sound of the Slots! approximated the Beach Boys' sound on ten songs about slot cars that, unless you listen closely, sound like any other run-of-the-mill car songs. Only an errant word here and there prevents "My Ferrari G.T.O." from being about a full-size car. The players -- Glen Campbell, Dickie Podolor, Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco -- are notable, but the album was an uninspired rush job that its creators admit they had trouble getting behind. It was so rushed, in fact, that a few of the songs are rewrites of Hondells numbers. The 1995 CD reissue adds two bonus tracks by the Wheel Men, an earlier Usher project for the same label. The songs have nothing to do with slot car racing, but are a worthy addition since they easily surpass the Revells' material in quality. - AllMusic Review by Greg Adams

Bo Diddley "The Mighty ... Ain't It Good To Be Free" 1984

At this point, Diddley began displaying a social conscience in his lyrics, and these efforts, while well-meaning, are uniformly embarrassing. "Ain't It Good to Be Free" would like to have been Diddley's take on Merle Haggard's "Fightin' Side of Me," but it has nothing of the latter's wit or sense of purpose; "Gotta Be a Change" and "I Don't Want Your Welfare" ("If you wanna give me something/Give me a job," Diddley declares in the chorus) might have been compelling in third-person anecdotal form rather than first-person invective...
...Diddley was never a top seller on the order of his Chess rival Chuck Berry, but over the next half-dozen or so years, he'd produce a catalog of classics that rival Berry's in quality. "You Don't Love Me," "Diddley Daddy," "Pretty Thing," "Diddy Wah Diddy," "Who Do You Love?," "Mona," "Road Runner," "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover" -- all are stone-cold standards of early, riff-driven rock roll at its funkiest. Oddly enough, his only Top 20 pop hit was an atypical, absurd back-and-forth rap between him and Jerome Green, "Say Man," that came about almost by accident as the pair were fooling around in the studio.
As a live performer, Diddley was galvanizing, using his trademark square guitars and distorted amplification to produce new sounds that anticipated the innovations of '60s guitarists like Jimi Hendrix. In Great Britain, he was revered as a giant on the order of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. the Rolling Stones in particular borrowed a lot from Bo's rhythms and attitude in their early days, although they only officially covered a couple of his tunes, "Mona" and "I'm Alright." Other British RB groups like the Yardbirds, Animals, and Pretty Things also covered Diddley standards in their early days. Buddy Holly covered "Bo Diddley" and used a modified Bo Diddley beat on "Not Fade Away"; when the Stones gave the song the full-on Bo treatment (complete with shaking maracas), the result was their first big British hit. - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Wadadli Riders "Made In Antigua" 2009

What the hell is "Wadadli"? Well, it is the ancient name of the Caribbean island of Antigua where the band was actually formed in 2005. Since then the band was very active with concerts worldwide, participating to important festivals like the Surfer Joe Summer Festival in Italy and the Surf Guitar 101 Convention in California. They have also been touring with Daddy-O Grande of Los Straitjackets and shared the stage with many surf bands from everywhere. As the musicians did split in early 2011, the band finished its career with just this album out and an EP together with Rev Hank of the Canadian band Urban Surf Kings called "Rev Hank Meets Wadadli Riders". This is the FIRST print of MADE IN ANTIGUA, released on July 2009 by Surfer Joe Music. It is completely sold out. - discogs.com

Friends of Dean Martinez "Under The Waves" 2003

The Southwestern soundscapes made by Friends of Dean Martinez, led by the lonesome pedal steel of Tuscon, Ariz., native Bill Elm, shift seamlessly from Santo & Johnny-inspired instrumentals to spaced out and surreal trips through the desert, all of which could serve as the soundtrack to Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
A Southwestern alternative rock supergroup of sorts, Arizona's Friends of Dean Martinez features past and present members of Giant Sand, Calexico, and Naked Prey. Giant Sand leader Howe Gelb, though not a member of the group, plays guest keyboards on their debut album, The Shadow of Your Smile, a surprisingly retro set of guitar-based instrumentals inspired by instrumental and surf rock of the late '50s and early '60s. With plenty of lounge music and desert country guitar twang thrown in, it's certainly retro in feel, but not revivalist; with Bill Elm's keening steel guitar at the forefront and occasional insertions of found sound and experimental bits, they evoke open dusty landscapes with wit and, one suspects, a bit of tongue-in-cheek irony. At any rate, it's a refreshing change from the often too-serious alternative rock paths that the musicians pursue in their full-time bands. Retrograde followed in 1997, and two years later the Friends returned with Atardecer. A Place in the Sun appeared in early 2000. The group switched to Narnack for 2003's On the Shore and the following year's Random Harvest, and also released Under the Waves on the German imprint Glitterhouse. Susan Surftone "2Nd To One" 2018

I've been playing guitar since The Beatles came to America in 1964. That's a long time. I started a band in NYC in the mid-1980's. In the mid-1990's I started an instrumental surf band in Rochester, NY called the Surftones...
...I was signed to a label in Hamburg, Germany, Gee-Dee Music, and the label changed the name to Susan and the SurfTones. We released three CDs for Gee-Dee and did four European tours. By 2011 I had moved to the west coast and started playing bass as well as guitar on my recordings. I released my first CD, "Shore," as Susan SurfTone. As always the music has a 1960's Garage and Pop influence as well as Surf. Sometime you might find a bit of '70's punk/new wave too. I play a combination of originals and covers. The covers are a way of connecting with listeners when your music doesn't usually have words. Occasionally I have recorded songs with vocals. The vocal songs have been greeted favorably but I prefer being a guitarist. You can hear me occasionally on Siriusxm on Bill Kelly's Blackhole Bandstand, The Underground Garage, Channel

The Real Kids "Grown Up Wrong" 1984

Though the record become something of a classic East Coast punk album, at the time it didn't do much and the bandmembers dialed back their ambitions...
...Felice got a gig as a roadie for the Ramones, and back in Boston he formed a new band called the Taxi Boys with Scott Parmenter on guitar, Billy Cole on bass, and Bobby McNabb on drums. The sound was similar to the Real Kids, as their two releases -- an EP and a single -- made clear. They transitioned back to the Real Kids name once Alpo rejoined the band on bass. The group returned to the studio, this time in Boston with Andy Paley working the dials as producer, and Bobby Morin on drums. Outta Place recaptured the sound of their debut, while giving it just a bit of studio gloss. The record was released by Red Star, and soon afterward, the Real Kids headed to France, where they had a much bigger audience than they did in the States. Bo Diddley "The Paradiso, Amsterdam, Holland 24th May 1982 - Radio Broadcast" 1982

As a live performer, Diddley was galvanizing, using his trademark square guitars and distorted amplification to produce new sounds that anticipated the innovations of '60s guitarists like Jimi Hendrix...
...In Great Britain, he was revered as a giant on the order of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. The Rolling Stones in particular borrowed a lot from Bo's rhythms and attitude in their early days, although they only officially covered a couple of his tunes, "Mona" and "I'm Alright." Other British R&B groups like the Yardbirds, Animals, and Pretty Things also covered Diddley standards in their early days. Buddy Holly covered "Bo Diddley" and used a modified Bo Diddley beat on "Not Fade Away"; when the Stones gave the song the full-on Bo treatment (complete with shaking maracas), the result was their first big British hit... - Biography by Richie Unterberger

Calexico "Garden Ruin" 2006

This is a more accessible album than previous efforts. Where the open blue skies of the landscapes they chronicled before were tempered by the smoky dark blues of their jazz influences, "Garden Ruin" is musically brighter. Lyrically too, the album takes a left turn in which contemporary rather than mythical America is addressed. Put succinctly, "Garden Ruin" is where Calexico fill those dusty, empty landscapes they documented with a big, big sound. - Quarterstick 2006
Sometimes the worst thing you can do is be very consistently great with your art. Calexico's failure to rise beyond cult status can perhaps be attributed to the fact that their albums are such subtle Whitman Samplers of Tex-Mex-and-kitchen-sink tastefulness. Garden Ruin, the group's poppiest album to date, just might change their socio-economic standing for the better. It's produced by JD Foster, but none of the things you love about Calexico--the sun-baked guitar, smoky vocals, mariachi horns, woozy lyrics--have left. Those elements are just grafted to crispier, more carefully delineated harmonies and multi-tracked backing vocals higher in the mix. By the album's end, on the slow-burning anthem "All Systems Red," Joey Burns buzzes and howls with a force never shown before on album. Rev Hank "Longhorn" 2012

Longhorn is the debut release from Urban Surf Kings' guitarist Rev Hank. The album is packed with 12 tracks of Surf & Twang! If you're a fan of Link Wray, Davie Allan, or Los Straitjackets dig in! Brought to you by the friendly Reverb Ranch label. Reverb Ranch, the Home of Surf & Twang, is proud to announce the debut solo album from Urban Surf Kings' guitarist Rev Hank. Longhorn features 12 surf, twang, Rock & Roll, and eclectic Pow Wow instrumentals (Rev is Mohawk).
The story of Longhorn: Rev went into Audio Empire (Halifax, NS) with drummer Frank den Haan on a cold weekend in February to record the album you are holding in your hands. Everything was ready to go for a live off the floor recording (guitar & drums). Tune #1, Twang Gang, was completed in one take, and all was swell. The duo start recording Hey Eddie, but noticed a peculiar sound & burning smell coming from Rev's amp. One of the tubes died a sad death. Luckily Rev had brought along a small 1960's Kalamazoo Model 2 amp on a whim. The amp was set up; a mic placed on its 8" speaker, and off Rev & Frank went. The drum & guitar tracks were laid down in about 6 hours with each track only needing 1 or 2 takes. Frank packed up his kit, Rev recorded the bass parts with a Longhorn in a couple of hours, and voila, the debut release from Urban Surf Kings' guitarist Rev Hank. The Lively Ones "A Surfer's Paradise" A Tribute to Don Murray 1996 (pt. 1 of 11)

28 years ago, A Surfer's Paradise benefit concert for Don Murray was held at the Strand in Redondo Beach, CA. It was the biggest concert of it's kind, 10 hours long with classic and contemporary surf bands including the Surfaris, the Chantays, the Belairs, the Lively Ones, the Tornadoes, Davie Allan & the Arrows, Jon & the Nightriders, the Eliminators, the Insect Surfers, the Halibuts, the Surf Kings and the coup de grace....the Mermen (Don's favorite band). Three of the original Turtles showed up, Al Nichol, Jim Tucker and Chuck Portz. No....not Mark and Howard (Flo and Eddie). The people that were there for me that day are still there for me. Dex Romweber Duo "Images 13" 2014

Dexter Romweber is a musician with a distinct vision that hasn't failed him yet in the years since the Flat Duo Jets emerged on the scene in the mid-'80s -- Romweber is possessed by a passionate love of American roots music that encompasses rock & roll, rockabilly, jazz, country, movie and TV themes, and anything else that radiates cool and translates to the guitar…
...Released in 2014, Images 13 is credited to the Dexter Romweber Duo, featuring Dexter on guitar and his sister Sara Romweber on drums (a format that recalls the Flat Duo Jets in their prime), and while this music is a bit less manic than the glory days of the FDJs, the approach and the thinking behind it are very much the same -- primal roots music played with streetwise virtuosity but few frills, and a genuine love of that which evokes cool above all else. From the reverb-soaked film noir mood of "Blackout!" and the spooky atmospherics of "Weird (Aurora Borealis)" to the relentless pound of "Blue Surf" and the raunchy strut of "Roll On," every tune on Images 13 conjures up a special flavor of its own, and Dexter knows how to bend his estimable skills to the needs of the song, while Sara's drumming is solid and versatile, a worthy match for this music. Images 13 isn't an all-out rock & roll assault, but there are plenty of moments where Dex and Sara show they still can raise the roof -- particularly a faithfully manic cover of the Who's "So Sad About Us" -- and pretty much everything here will sound welcome to anyone who has followed Dexter's career, or generally likes to hear a mad genius rip it up on the guitar. Susan & The SurfTones "Untitled #10" 2007

1960's influenced instrumental rock with a modern edge featuring surf / garage guitar, Doors-ish organ and VU drums all propelled by driving bass.
There's a lot of lovely music here. The whole album floats on a lush cushion of guitar perfectly supported by bass and drums, and augmented in an almost Country Joe and The Fish organ. This is a fine set of mid tempo to slow surf! Consistent, emotional, fluid, and very cool. - Phil Dirt

Friends Of Dean Martinez "Live At Club 2" 2001

If anyone makes a movie about a cowboy getting high on questionable, colorful substances and getting lost in the forgotten deserts of the American Southwest, Friends of Dean Martinez should write the score...
...In Live at Club 2, Bill Elm's tricked-out pedal steel leads the way through the group's moody, murky, ambient country set. He puts his evocative instrument to great use, drawing us into its every keening note. Indeed, the entire band has a knack for pulling weighty emotional moments out of the aether. There's definitely a bit of magic in this bunch.
Opener "For All Time"'s jazzy haze makes a pleasantly lethargic beginning. Dave LaChance's drums slowly parse out a rhythm, and Elm's pedal steel bleeds its sorrowful stain into the stage. The quiet, melodic lull can't last forever, though -- Mike Semple's guitar-work enables a smooth transition into the twangier "Main Theme", and Live takes off from there. By the time we reach "Ethchlorvynol", Elm's steel is screeching and moaning in a miasma of reverb.
On several occasions the band venture beyond their own material to revisit the past. Country standard "Tennessee Waltz" -- the fourth official song of the State of Tennessee, as of 1965, in case you didn't know -- becomes an acid lullaby in the Friends' capable hands, but after a while, Semple's lead guitar brings in the blues. Likewise, Gershwin's "Summertime" slows its jazzy rhythm to a crawl, then melts it down into a New Orleans dirge.
There's only one problem: Friends of Dean Martinez do their thing so well that Live at Club 2 gradually blurs into a thick, low-hanging sonic haze. Songs blend freely, rendered fluid by their lack of discrete hooks. Some listeners will find this disappointing, but it isn't a deal breaker; regardless of your general opinion of the group, the album delivers a handful of moments so perfectly crafted, they will haunt you. That ought to compensate for a few flashes of monotony. - Wes Holmes

The Real Kids "All Kindsa jerks live" 1983

...John Felice started off his career as a rock & roll legend as the teenage bassist in the Modern Lovers, whom he left in 1972 to form his own band, the Kids, with bassist Rick Coraccio, guitarist Steve Davidson, and drummer Norman Bloom...
...Thanks to their catchy songs, energetic performances, and high-powered covers of vintage rock & roll tunes, the band became a Boston institution. Success in their hometown didn't translate to a record deal and it took until 1977 for the band, now named the Real Kids, to record an album. The lineup of Felice, guitarist Billy Borgioli, bassist Allen "Alpo" Paulino, and drummer Howie Ferguson went into the studio with legendary producer Marty Thau to lay down a mix of Felice originals and ramped-up oldies. The Royal Hangmen "Hanged, Drawn & Quartered" 2016

The Royal Hangmen's second album has come a long way, starting high up in the seclusion of the mountains and ending in Hamburg's industrial district of Hammerbrook. Little by little, songs were polished, but also left with the necessary rough edges, in order to finally be immortalized on tape in the Yeah Yeah Yeah Studios. Dennis Rux's production brings the Hangmen's freshly forged sounds together perfectly...
...Sonically based on recordings from the 60s, the band's own style remains unmistakable, but on the second album it is much more contrasting and diverse: snotty garage rockers meet dark psychedelia, anger meets melancholy, although the noticeable joy of playing and listening is by no means the same stay on the track. The record opens with the fuzz-soaked “Ridin' High,” and it continues with variety. Be it with the dark bluesy “Howlin' For You”, the soulful “Stay” or a Booker T.-like instrumental with the apt name “Grooveadelic”. Two songs by Gary Hart, an English songwriter and fan of the band, also found their way onto the album - "I Thinks it's a Storm" and "Ain't Walking a Line". You can hear dark sounds in songs like “Feed The Monkey” and “Step Out Of The Dark”. So there is something on Hanged, Drawn and Quartered for all fans of neat (or unkempt) 60s music. Sixties Garage Rock 'n' Roll combined with the unmistakable Hangmen style form a stable constant, so that playing through without skipping is not only possible without any problems, it is even recommended.

Calexico "Convict Pool" EP 2004

"Convict Pool" is an EP released by Arizona band Calexico. Among its tracks is a cover version of the Minutemen's classic "Corona", with an arrangement featuring mariachi horns reminiscent of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" and a cover of Love's "Alone Again Or" featuring flamenco handclaps. - wiki
Calexico quickly followed their excellent Feast of Wire album with the Convict Pool EP, a collection of covers and original songs that all bear the stamp of the band's dramatic Southwestern sound. The EP kicks off with their version of the Love classic "Alone Again Or," which, along with the title track, was also released as a single in Europe in 2003. Recruiting Swedish singer Nicolai Dunger, Calexico build on the mariachi theme of the original and also give their rendition a more subdued feel. It may not have the heartbreaking drama of Love's rendition, but this version is more than just an experiment and works well on its own terms. The EP's title track, meanwhile, is in keeping with the softer, more singer/songwriter-oriented side of their music, which they explored on Feast of Wire with great success. Joey Burns' pleading vocals and John Convertino's wonderfully expressive -- but not flashy -- drumming come to the fore on this track as well as their cover of Francoiz Breut's "Si Tu Desais." The second half of Convict Pool lightens up with the rowdy cover of the Minutemen's "Corona," a staple of Calexico's live set, the Eastern European-inspired "Praskovia," and "Sirena," a theatrical original with Spanish backing vocals done by some lovely senoritas. These tracks have more of a "throwaway" feel than the first half of Convict Pool, but it's still a joy to hear Calexico in a looser and more playful mood. That playful mood extends to the EP's multimedia content, an animated short from The Cartoon Network called El Kabong Rides Again that features The Black Light's "Minas del Cobre" as its soundtrack. While this isn't quite as essential a Calexico release as Feast of Wire, Convict Pool is a lot of fun and one of the best short-format works they've issued yet. - AllMusic Review by Heather Phares
