Exotica is a musical genre, named after the 1957 Martin Denny album of the same name that was popular during the 1950s to mid-1960s with Americans who came of age during World War II. The term was coined by Simon "Si" Waronker, Liberty Records co-founder board chairman. The musical colloquialism exotica means tropical ersatz, the non-native, pseudo experience of insular Oceania, Southeast Asia, Hawaii, the Amazon basin, the Andes, the Caribbean and tribal Africa. Denny described the musical style as "a combination of the South Pacific and the Orient... what a lot of people imagined the islands to be like... it's pure fantasy though." While the South Seas forms the core region, exotica reflects the "musical impressions" of every place from standard travel destinations to the mythical "shangri-las" dreamt of by armchair safari-ers. - wiki

Los Venturas "Kaleydoskop" 2011

“Album title Kaleydoskop refers “to the multitude of influences and sounds that you can find in the songs”, and the track titles also indicate that: Transsibirskaya Magistral has a different connotation than, say, Surfer Stomp...
...Opener Venturas' Groove typifies the LP: a, er, groovy improvisation to a melody of esoteric guitar sounds with light wah wah. The second track, one of only three covers here, also follows that line: Tommy Roe's Dizzy, aka bubblegum psychedelia from 1969 when the rocking Sheila of 1962 preached love and peace with flowers in her hair. A number of tracks still contain surf melodies, but also hop depup ska, bongo-like drums, funky bass guitar and lots of percussion and guitar effects. A sax joins in on a track or three. Ganja Party is obviously very laid back, 04:52 Uhr Reeperbahn St-Pauli contains dialogue and moan samples from what seems to me an old German porn movie, Revenge Of The Tiki's Part II is their own Taboo. Cinematically I would not call the Venturas sound, but the other two covers are definitely from movies: Lawrence Of Arabia is the Maurice Jarre theme from the 1962 spectacle film of the same name, Bubamara (from the Yugoslav comedy Black Cat White Cat from 1998) combines ska with Eastern European influences but is still fun because of the high kasachok content. Whether the own song Zot Van A has anything to do with last year's Flemish film of the same name is unknown to me. You have to be a bit in the mood for it, but for those who like surf more than just Misirlou, this is quite a pleasant record that opens the boundaries of the surf genre towards psychedelic improvisation. See in that regard also the length of the songs: 52 minutes is quite long for 14 tracks. Venturas' Groove would have been just as good a CD title as Kaleydoskop, because atmosphere triumphs over speed, melody over misplaced machismo. Johnny Rivers "Whisky A Go-Go Revisited" 1967

Hi Everyone, I really loved the Johnny Rivers Anthology post, here on Twilightzone and I started to listen again my old record. I was thinking to post it here, but strangely I imagine that everybody has this disc in its collection, but a friend did not have it... In 1967, Johnny Rivers was slowly but surely moving into more musically adventurous territory with his albums Changes, Rewind, and Realization when he made one of the last of many LPs recorded at the signature Los Angeles rock club where he first gained fame, the Whisky A Go-Go. Whisky A Go-Go Revisited's first side was very much in the manner of his other live albums, with Rivers and his combo -- including the great Larry Knechtel on organ -- stomping through a handful of dance-friendly rock and R&B numbers, with Rivers' muscular guitar work and confident vocals making the most of songs like "It's Too Late," "Got My Mojo Working," and "When a Man Loves a Woman" (Rivers rarely gets the credit he deserves as one of the best and least histrionic blue-eyed soul singers of his era). Things get a bit more interesting on side two, devoted to a 15-minute workout on "John Lee Hooker," with Rivers and the band digging deep into the boogie in the manner of the titular Crawling Kingsnake (though "Satisfaction" and "Baby Please Don't Go" bob up and down through the jam more than once), and while this extended version of the number isn't all that radical in terms of what it sets out to do, it's a far cry from what Rivers was doing on-stage a mere three years before, and is more than a bit telling given the changing musical Review by Mark Deming(allmusic.com)

Kim Fowley "Impossible But True: The Kim Fowley Story" 2003

King Of The Psychedelic Freakout!
The Kim Fowley story is one of the most interesting in rock, and the exhaustive liner notes to Impossible but True do a fine job of telling it. Producer, songwriter, manager, promoter, scenester, performer — Fowley was omnipresent on the wild and seedy fringes of rock & roll in L.A. and London in the '60s and '70s. The 32 tracks that make up the musical portion of the package are comprised of tracks Fowley released in the '60s under his own name, songs he wrote or co-wrote, and songs he produced or at least had a hand in. Impossible but True: The Kim Fowley Story is a trip through an alternate history of rock in the '60s. Fowley had an ear for a great song and a weird streak a mile wide that kept things very interesting at all times. The disc kicks off with two Fowley performances from 1968: the beastly and rude hard rock of "Animal Man" and the hard rock, acid bubblegum of "Bubblegum." His unique vocal technique is best taken in small doses, and these (along with "The Trip," his hilarious psychedelic parody that is also included) are his best and best-known tracks. The rest of the disc bounces from style to style and from year to year. While most of the tracks Fowley did were pretty obscure, he did have a hand in some actual hits: he played on 1960's "Alley-Oop" by the Hollywood Argyles, discovered the Rivingtons (their "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" from 1962 is an R&B classic), released the classic instrumental "Nut Rocker" by B. Bumble & the Stingers on his Del Rio label in 1962, and he produced the girl group classic "Popsicles & Icicles" by the Murmaids from 1963. He also wrote a songs for Cat Stevens ("Portobello Road"), Paul Revere & the Raiders ("Like Long Hair"), and the Seeds (the wild "Fallin' off the Edge of My Mind") and produced Gene Vincent (1968's "Rainbow at Midnight") and the Soft Machine ("Feelin' Reelin' Squeelin'"). The rest of the disc is made up of the aforementioned obscure but excellent tracks like the hard-rocking garage track "Gloria's Dream" by the Belfast Gypsies (basically a Van Morrison-less Them), the British R&B of the 'N Betweens' (who later became Slade) cover of "Security," the snotty, spacy, and hilarious version of "Wild Thing" by Cathy Rich, and the folk-rock sweetness of "Daydreaming of You" by the Hellions. Fowley was always looking to wedge his way into every trend that came along, so there are stops made at folk-rock (the sweet "Daydreaming of You" by the Hellions), instrumental rock ("Charge!" by the Renegades), doo wop ("No More" by Little Victor & the Vistas), vocal pop ("Honest I Do" by the Innocents), cornball easy listening (his own wildly amusing "Space Odyssey" from 1968), and blues rock ("Louisiana Teardrops" by Elfstone). He also seemed to have invented at least one very specialized genre, ski rock. The songs by the Alpines ("Shush-Boomer") and the Snowmen ("Ski Storm, Pt. 1") are basically surf tunes with lyrics about skiing. Impossible but True is a fascinating historical document and a blast to listen to from beginning to end. Ace did a damn fine job putting it all together; it is a picture-perfect example of everything a good collection should be. Highly recommended. - AMG-Review

Los Venturas "Surfers Brew" 2006

Los Venturas is a – or better: the – Antwerp-based Belgian Surf Rock band to know as an Exotica fan…
...Their percussion might not be as exotic as the Aqua Velvets', the instrumental pool is decidedly smaller than the one of the Euroboys, but rest assured that the four guys around bandleader and bass guitarist Andy Weller know a thing or two about the spirit of a good wave, the depiction of enchanted beaches and the artificially lonesome life at sea when hundreds of eyes watch every move of the surfer. Surfers Brew of 2006 is an album of eleven instrumental compositions, each of them a unique transfiguration of a surfer's attitude. The album is strictly guitar-based, traversed by occasional field recordings, with only one instrument-related surprise in store.
Compared to the huge follow-up Kaleydoskop of 2011, Surfers Brew is much more limited and does not branch off into too distant lands. There are spoken word samples and underlining vocals, but they are of the humming kind and used as backdrops only. Johnny Rivers "And I Know You Wanna Dance" 1966

One of the most underrated rockers of the 1960s, Johnny Rivers was a guy who served up the big beat strong and simple -- on most of his best records, he set up at the Whisky A Go-Go in L.A. with a crack rhythm section and rolled tape as he let rip on a set of classic R&B tunes and pop hits, with his sturdy but passionate voice and no-nonsense guitar work doing the talking...
...And I Know You Wanna Dance was Rivers' fourth live album, and if it sometimes sounds like the work of a bar band, in this context that's a compliment -- Rivers was a guy who played to rock the party, and if he's playing what the audience wants to hear on this disc, he also did it very well indeed, and his covers of "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," "Every Day I Have to Cry," "Respect," and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" are potent blue-eyed soul with lots of feeling and no unnecessary fuss. Rivers could also dig deeper into the blues bag when he felt like it, and while "The Snake" and "Foolkiller" are uptempo rockers, their tough roots shine through bright and clear. Rivers' sharp, efficient lead guitar is on point throughout the album, and his bandmembers -- including Mickey Jones on drums and Larry Knechtel on keys -- are tight and tasty without getting in the way. Johnny Rivers may not have been the hippest guy on the charts, but he played real-deal rock & roll the way it was meant to sound, and And I Know You Wanna Dance is a lot more fun to listen to than a lot of other albums with much higher hipster cred. - by Mark Deming

Along about 1957, Barris started hearing from the Detroit auto manufacturers...
... "One day," he said, " I was working in the shop - we were over in Lynwood then - and Chuck Jordan from Cadillac walked in. I thought he meant the local agency. We had done this Cadillac for Liberace, the interior had his songs, all the notes, done in black and white Moroccan leather, and I thought he wanted to see something about that. But he said he was from the Cadillac styling center in Detroit and they were interested in our colors. Chuck - he's up there pretty good at Cadillac now. I think - said he had read some articles about our colors, so I mixed up some samples for him. I had developed a translucent paint, using six different ingredients, and it had a lot of brilliance and depth. That was what interested them. In this paint you look through a clear surface into the color, which is very brilliant. Anyway this was the first time we had any idea they even knew who we were."
Since then Barris has made a lot of trips to Detroit. The auto companies, mainly GM and Ford, pump him for ideas about what the kids are going for. He tells them what's wrong with their cars, mainly that they aren't streamlined and sexy enough.
"But, as they told me, they have to design a car they can sell to the farmers in Kansas as well as the hot dog in Hollywood." For that reason - the inevitable compromise - the customizers do not dream of working as stylists for the Detroit companies, although they deal with them more and more.

Miles Davis' first comeback record finds the trumpeter a bit shaky (he would improve album by album during the next few years) and has a few poppish throwaway tracks;..
...it is doubtful if anyone really remembers the title cut or "Shout." But with Bill Evans on soprano and electric bassist Marcus Miller, the other four selections are more rewarding with Davis forming the nucleus of his new band. - Review by Scott Yanow

"Hard-Headed Woman" 2004 A Celebration of Wanda Jackson

Nick Tosches once famously described Wanda Jackson as "the greatest menstruating rock & roll singer whom the world has ever known," and while he doubtless chose those words for comic effect, the nervy crudity is not entirely inappropriate...
...At her best, Wanda Jackson sounded wild and ravenously sensual in a way that few artists dared in the mid-'50s, especially not female vocalists, and sides like "Let's Have a Party," "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad," and "Fujiama Mama" run neck in neck with Jerry Lee Lewis or Billy Lee Riley for sheer frenzied rockabilly energy. If Jackson was too hot a number for her time and place, she was also smart enough to know it, and in the early '60s she shifted gears and began performing more traditional (and straight-laced) country material, and if the results were less exciting, there's no denying she had a great way with a honky tonk weeper; not unlike Jerry Lee Lewis, today her country sessions sound tougher and more heartfelt than what many of her peers were up to at the time. Outside of rockabilly fanatics and similar roots rock weirdos, Jackson is not nearly as well remembered as her body of work and historical importance would dictate, and Hard-Headed Woman: A Celebration of Wanda Jackson is a tribute album in which more than 20 different acts pay homage to her songs. Appropriately, most of the artists are women unafraid to get rowdy, and Neko Case, Carolyn Mark, Kim Lenz, and Kristi Rose all do right by Wanda's red-hot example, while Kelly Hogan, Jesse Sykes, and Laura Cantrell approach her honky tonk material with a similarly caring touch. Wayne Hancock and Cornell Hurd are also on board to show that the menfolk learned a few valuable lessons from Jackson as well, and they both do better than the few artists who decided to go weird with Jackson's hits (the greatest offender being Trailer Bride's affected take on "Fujiama Mama"). Hard-Headed Woman won't take the place of a decent Wanda Jackson record (Rhino's Rockin' in the Country: The Best of Wanda Jackson is a great starter, and 2003's Heart Trouble shows her voice is still in fine shape), but it offers concrete proof that folks who know good rock and good country dig Miss Wanda the most, and this is one of those rare tribute albums where the results are as good as the intentions. - Review by Mark Deming

The A-Bones "Ears Wide Shut" 2014

The A-Bones was an American garage rock band from Brooklyn, New York. Their name was derived from a 1964 song by The Trashmen. The A-Bones was formed in 1984 by vocalist Billy Miller and his wife, drummer and co-vocalist Miriam Linna, soon after they formed The Zantees. At the time, they were the editors of the rock and roll culture fanzine Kicks and just about to launch Norton Records. Guitarist Bruce Bennett replaced original guitarist Mike Mariconda shortly after the band was formed. Marcus "The Carcass" Natale replaced founding bass player Mike Lewis (a one time member of both the Lyres and Yo La Tengo), prior to recording the A-Bones second E.P. Free Beer For Life in 1988. Tenor sax player Lars Espensen was in the group from 1990 until 2010...
...The New York Times described the band solely in terms of its label, calling the group "dedicated rock revivalists", and noting "The A-Bones include Miriam Linna and Billy Miller, proprietors of Norton Records, which worships rockabilly, 1960s garage and anything having to do with that most cartoonish rock archetype: the juvenile delinquent in a leather jacket." In its overview of the band the Trouser Press' online music guide praised the A-Bones' "new levels of sloppy enthusiasm" and said that the band's "joyously cruddy sound is built on Linna's simple but effective pounding, Miller's manly grunt, and Bruce Bennett's unexpectedly inventive guitar work." The Village Voice declared that a 2009 A-Bones recording "may be the missing link between Andre Williams and Jay Reatard, if Reatard had any groove in his grit." According to a series of postings on the WFMU Ichiban blog and WFMU's own Beware of The Blog blogsite, the band's choice of cover material has ranged from songs by no-hit obscurities like Mike Waggoner and the Bops, to covers of The Troggs, Larry Williams, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, the MC5, and many others. - wiki

The Twisted Wheel was a nightclub in Manchester, England, open from 1963 to 1971. It was one of the first clubs to play the music that became known as Northern soul.
The Twisted Wheel in Manchester is one of the legendary names in British clubbing history. Originally launched in a coffee bar in 1963, it quickly developed a reputation as one of the best places in the country for listening to obscure, imported soul, R&B and ska records. Music fans had from all over the country to the weekly all-night to hear these records along with live sets by some of the best soul artists of the time. Eldanka "Joldanka Patrol" 2022

After several years of global chaos and now with a war at the doorstep of their Finnish homeland, Eldanka are back with a new album, entitled Joldanka Patrol, that is clearly on par with their brilliant 2018 album Rusty Treasures...
...A splendid sounding follow-up album, Joldanka Patrol is a nevertheless a solid step forward for Eldanka as well as for the entire instrumental rock idiom. Musically, highlights abound - from the Spanish-tinged groove of “Descanso”, to the Spy-Surf blast of the title track “Joldanka Patrol”, to the melodic, Finnish flair of tracks such as “Cosy Mementos” and “Necropolis Sidewalk”, to the Sci-fi flavors of “Le Parc” and the classical gas of “The Bog (Cantus Articus)”. Fans of Euro-flavored surf-rock will love the CD / LP cover art with its colorful ocean scenery and characteristic Finnish sense of humor.
On Joldanka Patrol, Eldanka features the same line-up that played on the Rusty Treasures album, including the band’s main composer Mika Jämsä (lead guitar), Rasmus Tammik (rhythm guitar), Mauri Haapamäki (bass guitar) and Janne Torvikoski (drums). Although most of the tracks are Eldanka originals written by Mika Jämsä, the two covers here include a daring take of a track from the 1985 Tangerine Dream album Le Parc, entitled “L.A. Streethawk” and a cover of Finnish classical composer Einojuhani Rautavaara called “The Bog”, taken from his 18-minute composition “Cantus Articus”. On their 3rd album, one of the best instrumental rock bands to ever come out of Europe, Eldanka takes the modern ‘surf-rock’ guitar instrumental genre to new heights. Johnny Rivers "Here We A Go-Go Again!" 1964 + "Mountain Of Love" 1966 - 7"/45rpm - mono

Rivers' next few singles, with the exceptions of "Mountain of Love" and "Seventh Son" -- which made the Top Five and Top Ten, respectively -- didn't do quite as well, but all performed very respectably. As important as his singles were in keeping him on the radio and before the public, his albums during this period were extraordinary. Rivers proved himself exceptionally prolific and versatile, releasing seven more albums through the end of 1967. Most of these were recorded live at the Whisky a Go-Go, which remained his home base for many years and his favorite concert venue. And all of the albums after his debut were carefully calculated -- the performances displayed great spontaneity and rate among the best pure rock & roll documents of their era, but Rivers and Adler were also careful to choose songs that all translated well on vinyl...

...It was out of the success of Rivers' Liberty recordings that Adler was able to found Dunhill Productions, initially as a management, production, and publishing company, which soon after became Dunhill Records, one the most successful independent labels of the mid-'60s, with artists including Barry McGuire, the Mamas & the Papas, and the Grassroots.
