Capturing the current state of the surf music scene in Brazil is the main goal of Brazilian Tsunami, a compilation produced by the Orleone Records and Reverb Brasil labels, in collaboration with the 63 bands featured on these three CDs.
This initiative portrays a veritable flood of reverb from the four corners of the country; from north to south, east to west, surf music has proliferated throughout Brazil in recent years. With a permanent presence at festivals and radio shows, this wet instrumental music is once again in the spotlight in the alternative scene, playing a significant role in the current music market.
There's no doubt that we're experiencing the most prosperous moment for the style in Brazil. The emergence of a new scene with bands that have forged their own path, sometimes free from pre-established standards, combined with the performances of several international acts in Brazil, have fueled the circuit, which has proliferated and spread its tentacles throughout Brazil.
Another important factor was the intensification of contacts and connections created and maintained with our Latin American brothers. Many bands from Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Colombia, and others approached our scene, crossing borders and witnessing the intensity of the reverb practiced here firsthand.
In general, Brazilian Tsunami carries the DNA of Brazilian surf music in all its variations and forms. The bands present here developed their identity based on what they listened to and, in many cases, took as inspiration the environment in which they were created, sometimes rubbing shoulders with the pioneering work of groups like The Jordans, The Clevers, Jet Blacks, Os Incríveis, Os Milionários, etc., groups that began the history of the style here in the 1960s and achieved great success, marking their name in the history and memory of Brazilian music.
Beyond the references that emerged in its early days, the style reconnected with the general public in the 1980s, thanks to the Beach Boy-esque João Penca and his Miquinhos Amestrados. In the 1990s, it expanded dramatically with the release of the film "Pulp Fiction," a pop culture gem featuring the anthem "Miserlou," performed by the king of kings, Dick Dale, as its soundtrack.
The 1990s scene was directly responsible for what we are experiencing today. The effervescent youth, fresh from the military dictatorship, encountered the democratic system and reclaimed their place—like all segments of Brazilian society—expanding through fanzines, magazines, websites, record labels, distributors, festivals, etc. From this wave emerged names that were fundamental to the consolidation of the style in South America's largest country. The "second generation of Brazilian surf music" was very productive, and some names remain active to this day. Bands like Os Ostras, Stanley Dix, Estrume'n'tal, Gasolines, Go!, Os Argonautas, and Tri Dux (just to name a few) paved the way and repaved the path that produced many of the bands featured here.
Across these three albums, we've compiled 63 songs from 63 different bands! Yes, it's an incredible feat for a scene that doesn't rely on mainstream media and whose driving force is its own members, who self-manage their decisions and keep the wheels turning in different parts of this immense country.
Being part of this history, experiencing this event, is something that fills us with pride, and that's why this collection is truly special to us. We owe a special thanks to everyone who was directly or indirectly involved in this project: to the current gentlemen who started this whole story in an unusual country, to the subsequent generations of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and, above all, to each of the bands involved here, for all their dedication, patience, and camaraderie. Also, to the great Leopoldo "Mocotó" Furtado, my brother, pilot of the most important label dedicated to the style in South America, Reverb Brasil, and main coordinator of this project.
