Second album from the German Beatmeisters! 17 tracks between Beat, Twist, Shake and Garage!Die Montesas sind eine Beatband. Punkt. Beat und auch ein wenig Shimmy, und ab und zu etwas Shake und Twist. Meistens auf englisch, selten auf deutsch. Die vier Musiker haben gleiches Bühnenoutfit und spitze Schuhe an. Auf der Bühne wird wild abgehottet. Manchmal singen sie zu dritt dreistimmig. Es gibt zwei Saiteninstrumente in der Band: eine Elité-Bassgitarre und eine Guild-StarfireIII- Gitarre. Niemals sind Effektgeräte dabei. Verzerrer ist doof und wird natürlich auch am Verstärker NIEMALS eingestellt. Dazu gesellt sich ein Schlagzeug und eine Weltmeister-Orgel, welche ein seltenes Produkt aus dem ehemaligen deutschen Osten ist und über eine immense Durchschlagkraft verfügt. Manchmal sind auch diese beiden Mädchen dabei: die Montesitas! Sie schwingen wie wild die Rasseln und singen mit. Dabei wird der Pony-Ride getanzt und die männlichen Konzertbesucher sind ganz aus dem Häuschen! Die Montesas machen Logenmusik für Leute aus der Beatloge. Aber auch Leute, die noch nie was von der Beatloge gehört haben, staunen, und fangen an, diese Art Musik zu lieben. Sie klingt alt... so ende Fünfzies, Anfang Sechzies... bisschen wilder vielleicht... aber so wunderlich neu! Ja. Denn Niemand macht heutzutage so eine Musik! Von frühesten Kinderjahren an, haben diese vier jungen Kerls ja gar nichts anderes gehört als Rockabilly, Ska, Rocksteady, Beat und Soul. Erst nach wilden Experimenten in verschiedenen Bands fanden sie sich als "Montesas" zusammen um fortan die Beatlogenmusik einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. "ATLANTIC RHYTHM & BLUES" 1947-1974 BOX SET - Volume 1: 1947-1952 + Volume 2: 1952-1954

This eight-CD set should be a part of any collection that presumes to take American music -- not just rock & roll or rhythm & blues -- seriously. Atlantic Records was one of dozens of independent labels started up after the war by neophyte executives and producers, but it was different from most of the others in that the guys who ran it were honest and genuinely loved music. Coupled with a lot of luck and some good judgment, the results trace a good chunk of the history of American music and popular culture. Disc one opens with cuts which slot in somewhere midway between jazz, bop, and "race" music (as the term was used then). Disc two is pure, distilled R&B, the stuff filling the airwaves of black radio and the jukeboxes in the "wrong" parts of town in 1952-54. Surprisingly, the material on Disc three, covering 1955-57, isn't very different in content or character from Disc two, despite the fact that it covers the period when white teenagers were starting to listen to and buy these records in large numbers. It's only with Disc four that one sees the consequences of the late '50s -- Ray Charles in his final days with the label, juxtaposed with the Drifters in their post-1958 incarnation and the start of the company's relationship with Stax/Volt Records. Disc six (1965-67) is practically a mini-tribute to Stax/Volt, filled with the best-known sides of Eddie Floyd, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Booker T. & the MG's. Discs seven and eight run from the late '60s and the heyday of Aretha Franklin to some great early-'70s soul, including Roberta Flack and the Spinners. "RUNNING SCARED" The Monument Records Story 1958-1962

Mention of Monument Records to a Sixties music fan will usually bring the immediate response: ‘Roy Orbison’. This was indeed the label on which the classic rock balladeer relaunched his career. But that two-word answer would be to ignore a lesser-known but talented roster of singers and musicians who made the label their home. 'Monument Is Artistry' was the label's slogan, and the 40 tracks showcased here more than back up that claim.Two CD set with 40 tracks from the early years of the Monument label founded by veteran record man Fred Foster in 1958 and became a successful label that lasted until 1983. This set covers the first four years of the label from 1958 through 1962. The label's first release Gotta Travel On by Billy Grammar was a big hit but when they signed Roy Orbison a year later their future was certain with 17 chart hits over the next five years. This set includes some of the earliest of those Running Scared/ Uptown and Only The Lonely. It also includes the novelty instrumental hit Mexico by Bob Moore and the superb R&B vocal group The Velvets with their lovely Tonight Could Be The Night. The Chimps "Live At The Safari Club"

The Chimps were the throwback frat-rock alter-ego of Satan's Pilgrims, playing concerts around the Northwest just for the fun of it. Their only "real" album was this live show from '99, recorded at a small bar in a tiny town 30 miles outside Portland, OR. It is, unfortunately, an audience recording and suffers greatly from that late 90's mindset of "how low can we lo-fi?", but remains the only document of this locals-only side project (that is to say: it's the sound engineer's fault, not the band's). Sounds a little rough when it starts, but you're hooked by the time they start the first chorus. The band arrangement tweaks the Pilgrims' line-up just slightly, with Ted Miller on vocals, Dave Busacker on organ, Scott Fox on guitar, John Cox on bass and John's brother Andy on drums (the only non-SP member). To my knowledge as a local, they haven't performed as The Chimps for more than a decade at least. Could be the only glimpse we get at 'em. - Garage Punker

"BOOK OF LOVE" The Argo Records Story 1956-1962

Argo Records was set up as a subsidiary of the Chicago, Illinois-based Chess label in December 1955. For its first two single releases in early 1956, it was called Marterry, but Italian band-leader Ralph Marterie protested so strongly that the name was swiftly changed to Argo. The label was initially known for jazz recordings by the likes of James Moody, Sonny Stitt and the Ramsey Lewis Trio, but it soon widened its horizon to embrace blues, pop and even calypso. This two-disc collection features the best of the Argo recordings between 1956 and 1962, including Etta James, Clarence 'Frogman' Henry, Mel Robbins and many more.Argo was a subsidiary of Chess records founded in late 1955. Originally intended for jazz releases it quickly diversified to cover a wide spectrum of music and racked up quite a few hits, some of which are included here included the classic titles song by The Monotones. Other hits included Let Me In and Music, Music, Music by the wonderful Yvonne Baker & The Sensations and Etta James' powerfuul All I Could Do Is Cry. Clarence "Frogman" Henry who had two big hits on Argo is here on four lesser known but fine sides showing what an excellent New Orleans style R&B performer he was. Blues guitarist Jody Williams is featured on the great You May - one of a handful of sides he recorded in the 50s and his guitar solo shows why he is held in such awe by other guitarist. He also is featured backing Billy Stewart on Billy's Blues, Part 1 playing the licks "borrowed" by Mickley Baker for he & Sylvia's monster hit Love Is Strange. There is some fine doo-wop from groups like The Solitaires, Orbits, Ravens, Students and others and some excellent rock 'n roll from Mel Robbins (later to become Nashville session pianist "Pig" Robbins), The Silva-Tones, Lou Josie, Larry Diamond and others. This is a fantastic 1985 comeback album from one of the legendary names in rockabilly, making its CD debut after nearly 20 years. Backed by the UK's own Johnny and the Roccos - whose own 1985 album was recorded at just about the same time, forming the second half of this CD - Cochran was still in fantastic vocal form when Mike Vernon took him into the studio to record these cuts - all of which were specially composed for the session. "RIDERS IN THE SKY" The Amy Records Story 1960-1962

Instrumentals, dance crazes and novelty songs. All these were part and parcel of early-Sixties US pop, and all found a home at Amy Records. This 2 disc compilation showcases their best original releases from the likes of The Ramrods, The Altairs, The Rondels and The Four Jokers.Two CD set with 50 tracks from this label formed in 1960 as a subsidiary of Bell Records. In the first few years of its existence featured here the label heavily concentrated on instrumentals, dance crazes and novelty songs having hits with (Ghost) Riders In The Sky by The Ramrods and The Madison by Al Brown's Tunetoppers. It also includes a couple of tracks by Jerry Landis who later became better known as Paul Simon showing that he had quite a way to go. Landis/ Simon also wrote one of the songs here by vocal group Tico & The Triumphs. Other artists includes Gabriel & The Angel, Mabel King, Johnny Beeman, Chuck Jackson, Dougie The Dude, The Romeos (an answer song to The Lion Sleeps Tonight - really!), The Star Steppers, The Sheiks, The Four Jokers and more. BOBBY BARE vs. BILL PARSONS "Buddies With The Blues" 1956-1961

In the early days Bobby Bare and Bill Parsons were friends whose careers were intertwined, to the point where Bare's demo version of The All American Boy, a song intended for Parson's to cover, got released with Parsons' name mistakenly credited on the label, and made it all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts. That track, and many more fine Rock & Roll and Country recordings by the two, are collected here, with quality notes to help you keep track of everything. Other cool tracks include Down On the Corner Of Love/ The Living End, and, of course, Vampira by Bare. Edjucated Rock & Roll/ My Rockin' Shoes, and "Hot Rod Volkswagen (I think that's called a Baja Bug,) by Parsons. This features lots of great, and many of them rare, recordings from both artists. Bobby Bare just doesn't get enough credit for the great artist that he is and the decades of good music he put out, starting off on tracks like these, Bill Parsons gets far less. Pick this up and give these great artists some love. (JM) (Roots & Rhythm)Before he hit it big as a country singer, Bobby Bare was a rock & roller who scored a hit single in 1959 with "The All-American Boy," a witty tune about a guy not unlike Elvis Presley who rises to fame before being drafted into the Army. However, while Bare co-wrote and sang the song, the record was credited to Bill Parsons, a close friend and fellow musician who occasionally collaborated with Bare. Bare wrote the song for Parsons to sing, but the label that put out the single preferred Bare's demo to Parsons' polished recording, and it was Bare's recording that rose to number two on the pop charts despite Parsons' name appearing on the label. Buddies with the Blues collects 30 sides Bare and Parsons released during their rock & roll days between 1956 and 1961; listening to this album, it's not hard to imagine how Parsons and Bare could be mistaken for one another, since their voices are similar, and most of this music is light but lively early rock & roll shot through with a goofball sense of humor, as the songs celebrate revved-up Volkswagens, horror movie host Vampira, difficulties with cheap guitars, sending satellites into orbit, and a guy who buys the Brooklyn Bridge. (The set also includes the little-known follow-up to "The All-American Boy," "I'm Hangin' Up My Rifle," in which the same rock & roll idol comes home after serving his hitch in the service.) Anyone who enjoyed the loopy fun of "The All-American Boy" should dig Buddies with the Blues, which along with solving the riddle of how Bobby Bare's first hit got released under the wrong name provides a solid overview of Bare's days as a funny rocker before Nashville came calling. Danny Wolfe was a singer, pianist and musical entrepreneur, but by far his most important legacy is as a songwriter. During the second half of the 50's he wrote some really good rock 'n' roll songs, some recorded by himself but many others by other artists. Danny's two best rockers, "Let's Flat Git It" and "Pucker Paint" are included here along other masterpieces on his other artists voices like Gene Vincent & his Blue Caps, Tooter Boatman & The Chaparrals, Huelyn Duvall, Roy Orbison, Sanford Clark, Johnny Cash and others… Let's flat get it!Texas songwriter Danny Wolfe thrived in the years from 1955 - 1966 excelling in writing Rockabilly songs, most notably for Gene Vincent's classic Capitol Records releases. This collection features three of the great Gene Vincent recordings: Pretty, Pretty Baby/ Gonna Back Up, and Double Talkin' Baby, as well as good tracks by Tooter Boatman, Carl Smith, Mac Wiseman, John D. Loudermilk, Huelyn Duval, and many more. Loudermilk's Susie's House being amongst the best tracks here, not to mention pretty rare. Wolfe's most famous composition has to be Fools' Hall Of Fame and you get great versions of that as well from no less than Rudy Richardson, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. Also featured are about half a dozen tracks with Danny Wolfe himself tackling his own compositions, which are not the best tracks on the CD; however, he did just fine on the writing royalties. "QUICKSAND" The Groove Records Story 1954-1956

The groove label was started in 1954 as an outlet for the label's blues, R&B and doowop releases and folded in 1956 though was reactivated a number of times over the next decade but this set concentrates on its early years when it issued a slew of hot recordings. Most of the recordings were cut in New York and many of the sessions featured the fabulous talents of guitarist Mickey Baker and saxophonist Sam "The Man" Taylor and their talents are evident on recordings here by Big John Greer, Mr. Bear, "Tiny" Kennedy, Otis Blackwell and others. Mickey is also present on the two great tracks by Mickey & Sylvia including their chart topper Love Is Strange. Another great New York guitarist, Larry Dale is featured on his own You Better Heed My Warning and accompanies Champion Jack Dupree on his novelty Lonely Road Blues. More great guitar can be heard from Roy Gaines on his rocking Worried About You Baby and 11 year old future jazz guitar giant George Benson is heard on his first recordings - one a reworking of Ray Charles' It Should Have Been Me. Other blues and R&B artists include Maymie Watts (who gives us the title song), Emmett Hobson, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, Sonny Terry, Clayton Love and others. There is also some great, mostly rocking, doo-wop from The Nitecaps, Avalons, Du-Droppers, Twilighters, Coronets and others. A superb collection with excellent sound and brief notes. Rockpile "Seconds of Pleasure" + "…sing the Everly Brosthers" - Limited free-EP with Rockpile 1980

Expanded Pleasure!!!The LP includes the bonus EP--NICK LOWE & DAVE EDMUNDS SING THE EVERLY BROTHERS. Kindred spirits Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe had worked together extensively in different capacities in the 1970s, but their on-again / off-again band Rockpile only recorded one album, 1980's superlative SECONDS OF PLEASURE. It stands as one of the finest examples of the pub-rock / power-pop crossroads that defined the band's aesthetic. Edmunds and Lowe's American influences are worn on the sleeve (literally), as they spark new life into tunes by Chuck Berry ("Oh What a Thrill") and soul man Joe Tex ("If Sugar Was as Sweet as You"). Incredibly, the duo's own compositions stand up just as well. "When I Write the Book" would have been a standout on any classic Sam & Dave LP, and "Heart" is a finer faux-Motown piece than one could ever expect from a bunch of Brits. This 1980 issue is spiced up with a bonus 7"EP, including a quartet of sterling Everly Brothers covers, where Edmunds and Lowe show off their harmony skills. Even with decades of hindsight, a convincing case can be made for SECONDS OF PLEASURE as one of the finest British rock & roll albums of its era.

"BOOGIE UPROAR" Gems From The Peacock Vaults

Superb collection of jump blues and R&B recorded for the great Peacock label between 1949 and 1952. Founded in Houston in 1949 by night club owner Don Robey it was originally formed with the intention of recording one of his most popular club artists Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown it quickly expanded and featured some of the best artists in Houston and the surrounding areas as well artists from further afield who were passing through like Memphis Slim & Jimmy McCracklin. "Gatemouth" is featured on four titles including the hot title instrumental and the classic Dirty Work At The Crossroads. Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton is featured on four tracks including her big hit Hound Dog and the soulful They Call Me Big Mama. Other artists here include Paul Monday, Bettye Jean Washington, The Deuces Of Rhythm (rockin' R&B vocal group featuring a young Little Richard), Andrew Tibbs (Chicago vocalist with the excellent Mother's Letter which I believe is on CD for the first time), Marie Adams, Jimmy McCracklin (two superb sides from 1952 with hot guitar from Lafayette THomas), The Johnny Otis Orch., Pete "Guitar" Lewis (the tough harmonica instrumental Goin' Crazy which I believe is on CD for the first time), Elmore Nison, Floyd Dixon, Silver Cooks & The Gondoliers (fine New Orleans group with Papa Lightfoot on harmonica), Joe "Papoose" Fritz, Walter Brown (the last recordings of this superb and pioneering blues shouter with The Jay McShann Orch.), Willie Holiday, Robert Ketchum and others. The Peacock label was also the greatest gospel label of the 50s and 60s and there are three token gospel sides featured including the fantastic Calling Jesus, My Rock by the female quartet The Golden Harp Gospel Singers led by Jeanette Harris, the wife of the great R.H. "VIGILANTE MAN" Gems From The Topic Vaults 1954-1962

The oldest independent record label in the world, Topic Records was established in 1939 as an offshoot of the Workers' Music Association. In the beginning, the label's brief was to release "gramophone records of historical and social interest". Then, during the Fifties, folk singers Ewan McColl and Al Lloyd got involved and began producing records of traditional music that had a left-wing slant. The tracks on this two CD set cover the years 1954 to 1962 and demonstrate the breath of McColl and Lloyd's vision. Split between early British recordings and important American music, this collection shows diversity of sound and cohesion of message. Representing the British side are tracks from McColl, Lloyd, Ray & Archie Fisher, Jeannie Robertson, The Liverpool Spinners, and Johnny Handle. The legendary Paul Robeson was the first American artist McColl and Lloyd took on board in 1957, and from there fellow Americans Peggy Seeger (both solo and with her sisters, Penny and Barbara), Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger followed. As a leading British folk music label, Topic Record's importance and influence and not be underestimated and this collection serves as a primer on what the label is and was about. Greatest Hits contains the bulk of Tom T. Hall's biggest hits from the late '60s and early '70s, including all his Top 10 hits from that era — "Ballad of Forty Dollars," "Homecoming," "A Week In A Country Jail," "Shoeshine Man," "Salute to a Switchblade," "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died," and "Me and Jesus" — but the record only hints at the his talent as a songwriter. Many of his best songs are on Greatest Hits and the collection does avoid his tendency for cuteness (with only a couple of exceptions), making Greatest Hits a good introduction, even though it does bypass plenty of fine songs. "Lonesome Road" Gems From The Vanguard Vaults 1958-1962

The recordings on this compilation are culled mainly from 1958-1962, a golden period for the label formed in NYC in 1947. Certainly the biggest act they snagged during this period was Joan Baez, and as the Sixties wore on it maintained its repuation as a cutting edge label. Along with the likes of The Weavers, Peggy Seeger and Tommy Makem this double CD provides a fabulous taste of a time when Vanguard was a guarantee of quality, innovation and excitement. (Not Now)Vanguard records were a gutsy label with good taste. They signed up The Weavers and Paul Robeson when Joe McCarthy and his comrades got them blacklisted; put out releases featuring Blues greats like Junior Wells, Otis Rush, Otis Spann and James Cotton; and were hip enough in the late 1960s to sign up radical hippie acts like Country Joe and the Fish. This collection covers the heyday of the Folk boom in the late 1950s to early '60s, so you get lots of great tracks by Joan Baez (probably the labels biggest act in the early years,) Pete Seeger with and without The Weavers, Cisco Houston with a couple gems like I Ain't Got No Home, and Talking Dust Bowl Blues,, The Rooftop singers with their giant hit version of Gus Cannon's Walk Right In, epic performances from Paul Robeson - - John Brown's Body, and Odetta - Motherless Children, Hedy West, Ed McCurdy, Peggy Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert and so on. The Standells "The Best of the Standells" 1989

The Standells are truly one of rock-n-roll's forgotten treasures. From the classic opening riff of "Dirty Water" through the moody sway of "Rari" then all the way to the heartfelt plea of "Don't Say Goodbye" this collection will leave you wondering why this group isn't as renown as The Animals or other such contemporaries. The Standells were masters of that quintessential 60's sound and are the Godfathers of garage rock. - By C. Smith1984's The Best of the Standells remains one of the best compilations of the proto-punk group's output, collecting their classic "Dirty Water" as well as "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," "Barracuda," and "Why Pick on Me." It's true that nothing else matches "Dirty Water"'s impact, but the rest of the Standells' songs reaffirm what a solid and occasionally inspired band they were. "Try It," their theme song for Riot on Sunset Strip, and "Mainline" riff on the raunchy, sullen image that their hit created, while "Have You Ever Spent the Night in Jail" is still subversively funny. "Medication"'s droning, druggy love song could very well have been an influence on Jason Pierce's work with Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized, and "Black Hearted Woman" also sounds both of and ahead of its time. The group's psychedelic forays, such as "All Fall Down," now sound more dated than their surly, straight-ahead rock, but are still enjoyable. 1998's The Very Best of the Standells is also a good collection, but The Best of the Standells is worth seeking out. - Review by Heather Pharestrax:

Although Rockabilly's heyday was only a matter of a few late-Fifties years, the tracks on this excellent double-disc collection date from 1955 to 1962 and show that Chess Records was a label that had its finger in several pies.
Many of these tracks and artists may be footnotes in music history, but they're supremely enjoyable ones that deserve a wider hearing. (Raucous)Everyone thinks of Chicago's Chess Records as being the home to Blues and R&B, but the Chess Brothers never missing an opportunity to make a dollar ended up trying to cash in on the rockabilly craze by purchasing most of these recordings from outside labels and producers. Names like Dale Hawkins, Eddie Fontaine, Rusty York, Dick Glasser, and Gene Simmons loom large in rockabilly lore and some of their best work is here. But there's some great one-shot performers here as well: Billy Barrix (Cool Off Baby), Jackie Cannon (Proof of Your Love), Bobby Sisco (Go Go Go), and Billy Miranda (Run Rose) are just a few of the goodies herein. Lovers of rockabilly will get a big kick out of these samples of the Chess Brothers' business acumen. (GMC) (Roots & Rhythm)
