The Moon-Rays "The Best of the Moon-Rays" 2012

Zombies, Ghouls and Spies... all the Moon-Rays best songs totally remastered and some you've never heard before! - cdbaby
Artists are never satisfied with their work and with good reason. In the hustle and bustle of the studio, getting things done on budget and time sometimes means the artist doesn't have the time to sit back and think how he or she would REALLY like their song to sound.
Here we have the bands picks of their favorites off each of the four albums that the Moon-Rays did during their time at SVI studios. All have been totally remastered to more of the bands vision of how they heard these songs when they were first recorded. Some are more dramatically changed like at a slower tempo and some have only small changes that maybe only the band themselves will notice. But they are all fresh versions of some of the Moon-Rays best songs.
In addition a number of tracks that are brand new to the fans are here such as the title track to the new Paul Bunnell film the" Ghastly Love of Johnny X" , Footsteps in the Dark used as the theme music for the popular web series "Tales From the Pub" by director Larry Blamire of "Lost Skeleton" fame and Zombie Drums a Go Go used for our friends at Cult Radio a Go Go! We've also included some tracks of the Moon-Rays alter ego the Blue Zombies, a radio spot we did for Chicago's WXRT at Christmas and as a bonus track a 100 year old recording by Bert Williams as he tell about the perils of staying in a haunted house one stormy night.
We hope you enjoy these different takes on some classics and the nuggets we dug up for you...
Have a perfectly horrifying year. - Prof. Spooky

John Mayall "Looking Back" 1969

Reasonably interesting collection of non-LP singles from 1964 to 1968, featuring almost all of the notable musicians that passed through the Bluesbreakers throughout the decade...
..."Sitting in the Rain" (with Peter Green) showcases fine fingerpicking, the haunting "Jenny" is one of Mayall's best originals, and "Stormy Monday" is one of the few cuts from 1966 that briefly featured both Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce. The rest is largely passably pleasant and doesn't rank among Mayall's finest work. - Review by Richie Unterberger

"Do The 45!" Vol. 839 (202

Super fun collection of soul, blues, R&B, instro, and rock 'n' roll from the original 45's. (From my record collection.)
It's just me having fun with my 45's and whatever random record I pull out of the boxes. I will try to give both sides of the 45 unless one side is dull, unbearable or unplayable. I hope you enjoy. (Gyro1966)

The Kliek "Feel Good" 1993

There are at least two Kliek LP's. The first, I think is called "Behind Bars" or something like that. Very Kinks influenced (even has liner notes with a Ray Davies endorsement) and a brilliant cover of "Leave My House". Second one, "Feel Good" was a bit heavier (slightly different line-up), but was still great with wonderful covers of "Save My Soul", "Her Big Man", "Clock On The Wall" and You Ain't Gonna See Me Downw On My Knees" (or something like that - Texas 60's Punk mayhem!). And I just remembered that their farewell LP/CD is a live one "At Caafe Mono". Very consistently good band! review: Rocky

The Manatees "Snackin' With The Manatees" 2001

Snackin' With the Manatees is the perfect title for this wild romp, part tribute to the surfing' sounds popularized by the Ventures and Dick Dale and part gonzo paean to the spirit of garage bands everywhere.
Instrumental surf music gone astray, The Manatees deliver sunny, tropical rock with plenty of surf. Though, this punch is spiked, whipping up some drunken, chaotic surf beats along the way, making sure you don't get tired or bored with the same old surf song time and time again. No one song sounds alike. By: Alex Steininger
"Personally, I find them to be a very high energy, instro rock band with heavy roots in surf. A lot of slide guitar work along with the occassional theremin and tasty use of a wah wah makes them a unique experience. I hope you enjoy this one and "Swamp Thang!" as much as I have." - Eek! Devo "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!" 1978

Produced by Brian Eno, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! was a seminal touchstone in the development of American new wave. It was one of the first pop albums to use synthesizers as an important textural element, and although they mostly play a supporting role in this guitar-driven set, the innovation began to lay the groundwork for the synth-pop explosion that would follow very shortly...
...Q: Are We Not Men also revived the absurdist social satire of the Mothers of Invention, claiming punk rock's outsider alienation as a home for freaks and geeks. While Devo's appeal was certainly broader, their sound was tailored well enough to that sensibility that it still resonates with a rabid cult following. It isn't just the dadaist pseudo-intellectual theories, or the critique of the American mindset as unthinkingly, submissively conformist. It was the way their music reflected that view, crafted to be as mechanical and robotic as their targets. Yet Devo hardly sounded like a machine that ran smoothly. There was an almost unbearable tension in the speed of their jerky, jumpy rhythms, outstripping Talking Heads, XTC, and other similarly nervy new wavers. And thanks to all the dissonant, angular melodies, odd-numbered time signatures, and yelping, sing-song vocals, the tension never finds release, which is key to the album's impact. It also doesn't hurt that this is arguably Devo's strongest set of material, though several brilliant peaks can overshadow the remainder. Of those peaks, the most definitive are the de-evolution manifesto "Jocko Homo" (one of the extremely few rock anthems written in 7/8 time) and a wicked deconstruction of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," which reworks the original's alienation into a spastic freak-out that's nearly unrecognizable. But Q: Are We Not Men? also had a conceptual unity that bolstered the consistent songwriting, making it an essential document of one of new wave's most influential bands. - Review by Steve Huey

Miles Davis "Sketches Of Spain" 1960

Along with Kind of Blue, In a Silent Way, and Round About Midnight, Sketches of Spain is one of Miles Davis' most enduring and innovative achievements...
...Recorded between November 1959 and March 1960 -- after Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley had left the band -- Davis teamed with Canadian arranger Gil Evans for the third time. Davis brought Evans the album's signature piece, "Concierto de Aranjuez," after hearing a classical version of it at bassist Joe Mondragon's house. Evans was as taken with it as Davis was, and set about to create an entire album of material around it. The result is a masterpiece of modern art. On the "Concierto," Evans' arrangement provided an orchestra and jazz band -- Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, and Elvin Jones -- the opportunity to record a classical work as it was. The piece, with its stunning colors and intricate yet transcendent adagio, played by Davis on a flügelhorn with a Harmon mute, is one of the most memorable works to come from popular culture in the 20th century. Davis' control over his instrument is singular, and Evans' conducting is flawless. Also notable are "Saeta," with one of the most amazing technical solos of Davis' career, and the album's closer, "Solea," which is conceptually a narrative piece, based on an Andalusian folk song, about a woman who encounters the procession taking Christ to Calvary. She sings the narrative of his passion and the procession -- or parade -- with full brass accompaniment moving along. Cobb and Jones, with flamenco-flavored percussion, are particularly wonderful here, as they allow the orchestra to indulge in the lushly passionate arrangement Evans provided to accompany Davis, who was clearly at his most challenged here, though he delivers with grace and verve. Sketches of Spain is the most luxuriant and stridently romantic recording Davis ever made. To listen to it in the 21st century is still a spine-tingling experience, as one encounters a multitude of timbres, tonalities, and harmonic structures seldom found in the music called jazz. - Review by Thom Jurek

The Vietnam Veterans "On The Right Track Now!" 1983

Here is the first LP by the Vietnam Veterans. The 6 V.V.'s come from Nuptopia. The country you should live in! They don't give a fuck about the name you'll fuckin' give to their music.
That's just rock'n'roll for anybody, anywhere, at at anytime. This is what rock'n'roll is when it's played by the right people. Not "musicians" but human beeings. The V.V.s are bored by most of the neo garage bands.
"Psychedelia ain't a fuckin' dance craze, FOLKS! It's a fuckin' way of life! Did you ever take a real trip in your fuckin' life? What do you believe in? You're just fuckin' squares, KIDS, just fuckin' TWISTERS!"
The Vietnam Veterans just don't care about styles. They'd be psychedelic even if they'd play tango. So now open your ears and minds! Here is the fuckin' ultimate lysergetic rock'n'roll band! Keep flashin' on!!!

They've never seen Vietnam! The name for this band is an insult to every Vietnam Veteran!"
So a little tutoring history lesson for those: "Ho Chi Minh's second declaration of independence on September 2, 1945 was followed by massive repression that led to the Indochina War and cost the lives of 92,000 French military personnel. The Indochina Conference in 1954 finally ended French colonial rule in Vietnam." - wiki

The Moon-Rays "Swingin' At The Seance" 2008

It\'s always been a little hard to describe the music of The Moon-Rays to the uninitiated. It\'s a blend of so many things that it can\'t really be categorized unless \"cool\" is a musical category of its own. Their past releases have been mainly rooted in the sounds of the \'60s lounge and surf music, but always with a slant toward the unusual and spooky. Songs with titles like Blues for Vampira, The Grim Creeper, Thrillville, Drag Fink, Mysterion, Sophomore Werewolf in Love and The Devil in Nylons gives you some insight into the thematic direction of the group...
...In The Moon-Rays\' newest collection of spooky selections titled Swingin\' at the Séance, the band trades in their bongos for brass and they explore some of the more macabre pop songs from the \'30s and \'40s. If you\'re a fan of Big Band music you might recognize the title song as a piece originally recorded by Glenn Miller and his orchestra in 1941. Other selections were recorded by well-known swing-era artists like Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Louie Armstrong and Bing Crosby.
The complete track list includes You\'ve Got Me Voodoo\'d, Mr. Ghost Goes to town, The Headless Horseman, Nightmare, Jack You\'re Dead, Swingin\' at the Séance, Mysterioso, Skeletons in the Closet, The Spooks Jump In, Shuffle of the Damned, Creepy Charlie and Haunted House Blues (the oldest number on the CD with was recorded by Bessie Smith in 1923). Unless you\'re a devoted fan of old jazz and swing music, you\'re probably not familiar with these songs. The most well-known of the bunch is probably The Headless Horseman which is featured in Walt Disney\'s 1947 animated classic ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD and sung by the aforementioned Mr. Crosby.
Thanks to The Moon-Rays, new listeners can now enjoy these forgotten spook songs for the first time. Band member Scott Mersching explains in the liner notes that he became familiar with most of these songs through his father who played in bands during the \'40s and recalls them as \"Halloween songs\" performed by many bands of that era.
Scott says, \"This CD is for my dad, his generation of musicians, people that have never heard these songs and the people who both know and embrace the music of their fathers and grandfathers.\"
Although a stylistic departure from their previous CDs (Thrills and Chills , The Ghouls Go West and Sinister Surf) with more musicians and more vocals than before, Swingin\' at the Séance hits the target it strives for dead on and conjures up a crystal ball full of swingin\' and spooky listening fun. And special kudos for the CD\'s packaging. It\'s beautifully designed and provides some appropriate tricks and treats with its period-style graphics and Halloween images.
You can sample the music at the Moon-Ray\'s Myspace page and order the disc from the Moon-Rays website. Then grab your ghoul and get ready to hit the dance floor. - Kerry Gammill

John Mayall "Blues From Laurel Canyon" 1968

Mayall's first post-Bluesbreakers album saw the man returning to his roots after the jazz / blues fusion that was Bare Wires. Blues from Laurel Canyon is a blues album, through and through…
...Testimony to this is the fact that there's a guitar solo only 50 seconds into the opening track. Indeed, Mayall dispersed the entire brass section for Blues from Laurel Canyon, and instead chose the solid but relatively limited backing of Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums), and Stephen Thompson (bass). Instantly, it is apparent that John Mayall hasn't lost his touch with the blues. "Vacation," the album's opener, reminds one exactly why this artist is so celebrated for his songwriting ability. The staggering Mick Taylor (here still in his teens) truly proves his worth as a blues guitarist, while Steve Thompson (also in his late teens) works superbly with one of the genre's most interesting drummers, Colin Allen. Blues from Laurel Canyon is as unerring as Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, and equally as musically interesting. Not only is this one of the finest John Mayall albums, it is also a highlight in the blues genus. - AllMusic Review by Ben Davies

The Ghastly Ones "Gears n' Ghoul Finks" 2009 EP

The Ghastly Ones were formed by two Special FX make up/movie monster makers, Garrett Immel aka Dr. Lehos and Norman Cabrera aka Baron Shivers. They infused their love of Halloween records, late night monster movies and Screaming Lord Sutch with inspiration from early sixties surf and hot rod acts like The Lively Ones, Avengers VI, and The Del-Aires to create the first "spooky surf" band...
...The band's first show was at Al's Bar on Halloween 1996, infamous in the punk world for several rowdy Misfits shows. During their early shows, the stage was often decorated with tombstones and cobwebs to give their performances the proper atmosphere.
Their unique sound and look caught the attention of Rob Zombie, who released their first album, A-Haunting We Will Go-Go in 1998 on his label Zombie-A-Go-Go Records, a subsidiary of Geffen Records. Subsequent albums were released on their independent label, Ghastly Plastics Co.
In 2007, The Ghastly Ones toured the East Coast and Japan for the first time and in 2009 they played in Nottingham, England. Their music has been featured in the SpongeBob SquarePants Halloween episode titled “Scaredy Pants” and the 2009 remake of Night of the Demons.
Drummer and co-founder Norman "Baron Shivers" is currently focusing on his career as a movie monster maker. Keyboardist Dave Klein "Captain Clegg" is currently focusing on recording and production at his own studio Dave Klein Recording. Guitarist Garrett "Dr. Lehos" is currently playing in Satan's Pilgrims and Venturesmania. - wiki

Willy DeVille "Live From The Pier 2 in Bremen Germany" 2008 - disc 2

But Willy's records always sold better in Europe than in his native America. There was a time when Willy DeVille didn't even have a record deal in the USA, while at the same time his mariachi version of "Hey! Joe" was conquering the singles charts in Europe....
...Irony of fate, especially with him, who embodied almost all American musical traditions in one person. His music was a mixture of rock, blues, doo-wop, Latin, Cajun, Creole, Tex-Mex and country. In 2007/2008 Willy DeVille recorded his last studio album, “Pistola”. Willy went on tour again with the Mink DeVille Band to promote the album live. On February 27, 2008, the tour group stopped at Pier 2 in Bremen. Radio Bremen was there and recorded the concert. It would be Willy's last tour, as just over a year later he went to the hospital in New York to be treated for hepatitis C. During an examination, doctors discovered a tumor in his pancreas. Willy DeVille died on August 6, 2009, a few days before his 59th birthday. In one of his last interviews he said: "I have a theory. I know that I'll sell a lot more records when I'm dead. It isn't very pleasant, but I have to get used to this idea death's there. I can feel it at the door. I'm not saying I'm going anywhere right away but I know it's coming." With this concert recording, Willy DeVille's music lives on, his magic, his unique aura and his charisma can be felt again. - amazon

The Ghastly Ones "Unearthed" 2007

This disc features new versions of classic ghastly tunes such as GHASTLY STOMP, HAULIN' HEARSE, WEREWOLVES ON WHEELS and more, previously out of print and available on this disc for the first time featuring organ by Dave aka "Captain Clegg"! These tracks have never sounded better. Dig it!
As a general rule, I don't get behind bands re-recording their past songs/albums, but this is one of those rare exceptions. I was lucky enough to take a chance and snag The Ghastly Ones' first album when it came out, but it has since gone out of print. It was on Rob Zombie's very short lived Zombie A Go-Go Records.
The Ghastly Ones kinda disappeared and went into a kind of hiatus, but resurfaced years later with a new E.P., then a new album called Target: Draculon (great album by the way). Unearthed came out about two years after, and on the album they have re-recorded most of the songs from the first album, and a few from the E.P. I'm guessing a big reason for this is because their first album has been unattainable for quite some time.
The new recordings are great though, and sound just as punchy as the originals. They are actually one-upped because of the addition of organ player, Captain Clegg. Clegg's contributions make a big difference and add to the kitschy, Munsters-esque, horror surf vibe these guys have finely crafted. Definitely more atmosphere with the organ added. No dialogue skits on this one either, though I didn't mind those.
But all in all, if you dig surf, if you dig horror surf, and if you want something to set the mood for Halloween(or just any damn month!), this is an excellent pick. - By Stanley Runk

The Treble Spankers "Hasheeda" 1995

- Jan Auke Brink
The Treble Spankers were a Dutch band in the mid 90's that came out of long list of cult/underground garage bands from Amsterdam. Their first album 'Araban' featured some original songs in a surf / treble sound. Their second, called 'Hasheeda' is a masterpiece.
It's so much more than just surf. There are greek, blues, dutch influences and also arabic, as in the great song 'Samira' which features a koran singer. The musicians are all good but it's lead guitarist Phantom Frankie who steals the show with his amazing play, some bits on 'Vahim' are just amazing. One of my favorite Dutch albums of all time. - M. Buisman "Martijn Buisman" (Amsterdam, NL)

Willy DeVille "Live From The Pier 2 in Bremen Germany" 2008 - disc

Willy DeVille, actually William Paul Borsey Jr., was born on August 25, 1950 in Stamford, Connecticut. He married for the first time at the age of 17 and went to London at the age of 21 to find suitable musicians for a band...
...The search was unsuccessful and he returned to the USA completely broke. In 1974 he founded Mink DeVille in San Francisco. The band moved to New York and became the house band of the legendary CBGB. Through the performances at CBGB, Mink DeVille began working with Jack Nitzsche in 1975, a producer who had already worked with Phil Spector, Neil Young and the Rolling Stones. The band achieved their international breakthrough in 1977 with the hit “Spanish Stroll”. Several albums followed, the critics applauded, but unfortunately there was no widespread success. The band Mink DeVille broke up, Willy DeVille moved to New Orleans and started his solo career. In 1987 his song "Storybook Love", produced by Mark Knopfler, was nominated for an Oscar for best film score...to be continued...

Johnny Cash "At San Quentin" 1969

To put the performance on Johnny Cash at San Quentin in a bit of perspective: Johnny Cash's key partner in the Tennessee Two, guitarist Luther Perkins, died in August 1968, just seven months before this set was recorded in February 1969...
...In addition to that, Cash was nearing the peak of his popularity -- his 1968 live album, At Folsom Prison, was a smash success -- but he was nearly at his wildest in his personal life, which surely spilled over into his performance. All of this sets the stage for Johnny Cash at San Quentin, a nominal sequel to At Folsom Prison that surpasses its predecessor and captures Cash at his rawest and wildest. Part of this is due to how he feeds off of his captive audience, playing to the prisoners and seeming like one of them, but it's also due to the shifting dynamic within the band. Without Perkins, Cash isn't tied to the percolating two-step that defined his music to that point. Sure, it's still there, but it has a different feel coming from a different guitarist, and Cash sounds unhinged as he careens through his jailhouse ballads, old hits, and rockabilly-styled ravers, and even covers the Lovin' Spoonful ("Darlin' Companion"). No other Johnny Cash record sounds as wild as this. He sounds like an outlaw and renegade here, which is what gives it power -- listen to "A Boy Named Sue," a Shel Silverstein composition that could have been too cute by half, but is rescued by the wild-eyed, committed performance by Cash, where it sounds like he really was set on murdering that son of a bitch who named him Sue. He sounds that way throughout the record, and while most of the best moments did make it to the original 1969 album, the 2000 Columbia/Legacy release eclipses it by presenting nine previously unreleased bonus tracks, doubling the album's length, and presenting such insanely wild numbers as "Big River" as well as sweeter selections like "Daddy Sang Bass." Now, that's the only way to get the record, and that's how it should be, because this extra material makes a legendary album all the greater -- in fact, it helps make a case that this is the best Johnny Cash album ever cut. - Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Paul Haig "Rhythm Of Life" 1983

Together with Orange Juice, Aztec Camera and The Go-Betweens, Josef K were one of several million dollar quartets on Postcard Records, recording five smart singles and an album, The Only Fun In Town...
...Touring the album during July and August of 1981, however, the band split after a final show in Glasgow. A combination of too-great expectations, too-small financial returns, Haig's dislike of touring, and unspecified disagreements over future direction seem to have killed off the band named after the existential anti-hero of Franz Kafka's The Trial. Fancifully, Postcard boss Alan Horne pointed the finger of blame at the NME... Whatever the truth, one of the Great White Hopes of the post-punk had self-destructed after just one long player, in doing so fulfilling their own brash prophecy... - LTM Recordings

The Moon-Rays "Sinister Surf" 2006

Halloween tinged surf, with a jazzy Beatnik bongo beat. spooksville man...
The Moon-Rays are unique, As MonsterKid Magazine said, "There is nothing quite like them out there today". They have taken Instrumental Surf and blended it with Beatnik jazz, 1950's Exotica, 60's Spy sounds and dressed it all up in a retro Halloween package.
In 2001 the Moon-Rays recorded the theme from WGN's "CREATURE FEATURES" television show, which got them immediate attention across the country with people who grew up in the 60's and 70's in Chicago and remembered fondly sitting in front of the TV on Saturday nights watching the show
This recording gave them the opportunity to record their first CD for Sound Imp Records. "THRILLS AND CHILLS" came out in 2002 and was comprised of mainly cover songs of groups like the John Barry 7, Henry Mancini, some music from the television show the "MAN FROM UNCLE", as well as two original songs.
One of these songs "1313 MOCKINGBIRD LANE" (named after the address of the Munsters home) found it's way onto numerous Halloween broadcasts that year and was picked up for two movies, "DR HORRORS EROTIC HOUSE OF IDIOTS" and the upcomming documentary on the Horror Host history "AMERICAN SCARY".
93 WXRT radio in Chicago picked "THRILLS AND CHILLS" as best instrumental release for 2002, quite an accomplishment for a "spook" band.
In 2004 they released their second CD for SVI titled the "GHOULS GO WEST". Unlike the previous CD this one was all original songs except for one and had much more of a "spooky" feel to it. The one thing it had in common with the previous CD is that several songs off of "GHOULS" also were picked up to be featured in films. Their unique blend of beatnik surf and jazz has set them apart from other so called "spook-surf" or Halloween bands, most of which rely on a darker heavy metal sound. We like to refer to our music as "Halloween Lounge" with a lot of humor.
"GHOULS" got widespread airplay on many college radio stations across the country as well as radio stations in Europe, Japan, and Australia.
The newest release by the Moon-rays "Sinister Surf" gets to the roots of 1960's west coast surf and drag music and is dedicated to the late Ed "Big Daddy" Roth whos legacy of Weird-oh's, monsters and finks nitro fueled our imaginations for decades. - cdbaby

Les Sauterelles "Columbia 65-67 Recordings" 2002

Les Sauterelles were from Zurich (Switzerland). This CD from 2002 contains their first album from 1966 as well as some unreleased material and their two italian 45's on Columbia.
Toni Vescoli planned with the band to earn his income, what for François is too risky, and Toni Quero brings Otto Bumbacher in the band, with the "two Ottos" and "two Tonis", it's now complete again. Toni Vescoli's sister Vera joined as a singer, as well as her agent to mediate gigs. On 26 December 1963, the Sauterelles have their first professional engagement, a week in Laax, which must however be terminated due to lack of snow and therefore guests on 1 January 1964. On 1 June 1965 Les Sauterelles had three consecutive months of various gigs in the club "Bagatelle" in Zürich as "Beat Band". In August, Peter Steffen played drums, and the recording session for the single "Hong Kong / Forget it all" began. In the interlude of Cliff Richard & The Shadows at the Hallenstadion, Jürg has medically holidays again, as a drummer acted Mandi Trappletti, and it goes on tour with the British band "Casey Jones and The Governors". The manager, Hans-Ruedi Jäggi was replaced on the best terms by Freddy Burger, and on 15 September 1965, the first record of Sauterelles was published, and sold out in half an hour – the song "Hong Kong" is the first Beat-single at the top of the Swiss Hitparade. Along with "The Counts" from Zürich and "The Dynamites" from Basel the album "SWISS BEAT - live" is recorded and mixed, again by Hans Wettler. Jürg Stocker, meanwhile his lung shadows is healed, and sound engineer Paul Delisle realize the single "I'm A Prisoner / Pretty Baby Tonight" in November 1965. In the sample number of the POP magazine, Toni Vescoli is on the front cover, and an article on the "Counts" about Düde Dürst, which then became the new drummer. The Sauterelles played thereafter for the "pot collection" of the Salvation Army, and the band got international attention by the photographs published.
Willy was replaced by Peter Rietmann, Toni started to compose on the harmonium after an accident, and together with Rolf Antener new songs were created. The daily newspaper Blick covers the costs for a production at the studio Bauer in Ludwigsburg, Ernst Kunz writes string arrangements and conducted in the studio a 16-piece string orchestra; a Dixie-band and a children's choir are other guests in the studio. For live concerts, Fritz Trippel joined the Sauterelles as a keyboardist, and with "Little Fritz" more recordings were done in a multi-week tour through Switzerland, with the singer Arlette Zola from Fribourg. The single "Heavenly Club" appears on 9 July 1968, as the first Swiss production in the Media Control Charts, it dominated the official singles chart for 13 weeks, of which 6 at the 1st place, and in the handset hit parade of radio stations, as Radio Luxembourg and Südwest Radio Baden-Baden, Les Sauterelles are played again and again, and the single played in the most European countries, in the US and even in Japan. Meanwhile, the Sauterelles performed in the Swiss television's "Hits à Gogo" as permanent guests, and Gianni Paggi realizes a short film, which is regarded as the first video clip of the pop era. In August 1968, the album "View To Heaven", and the band is produced by Decca Germany. After more than 300 performances a year, drummer Düde Dürst and Rolf Antener are burnt out, and Les Sauterelles initially resolved. - wiki

The B-52's "Cosmic Thing" 1989

Many observers were prepared to write off the B-52's after the release of Bouncing Off the Satellites. Granted, the album was completed in the wake of Ricky Wilson's death, but the group appeared bereft of new musical ideas and were sounding rather stale...
...In other words, the last thing anyone expected was a first-class return to form, which is what they got with Cosmic Thing. Working with producers Don Was and Nile Rodgers, the B-52's updated their sound with shiny new surfaces and deep, funky grooves -- it was the same basic pattern as before, only refurbished and contemporized. Just as importantly, they had their best set of songs since at least Wild Planet, possibly since their debut. "Cosmic Thing" and "Channel Z" were great up-tempo rockers; "Roam" had a groovy beat blessed with a great Cindy Wilson vocal; and "Deadbeat Club" was one of their rare successful reflective numbers. Then there was "Love Shack," an irresistible dance number with delightfully silly lyrics and hooks as big as a whale that unbelievably gave the group a long-awaited Top Ten hit. The thing is, Cosmic Thing would already have been considered a triumphant return without its commercial success. The big sales were just the icing on the cake. - Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

John Mayall "Bare Wires" 1968

Rock was changing fast in 1968. The concept album was in the air, a development encouraged by Sgt Pepper’s the previous year (though nobody seemed certain what its concept was, or even if it had one). Groups as diverse as The Hollies, The Moody Blues and The Temptations were casting off jolly ditties, confronting issues and ‘going heavy’. It was get hip or be buried for many bands, and even as rootsy a figure as John Mayall was not immune to this shift, as Bare Wires, which was released on 21 July 1968 and opens with a 22-minute suite, makes clear...
...However, before you regard the bluesman’s break in the road as a fashionable aberration, bear in mind that Mayall had doubtless heard concept albums before rock thought of them; Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads (1940) had probably crossed his path; likewise Max Roach’s We Insist! Freedom Now Suite (1960), perhaps even Clyde McPhatter’s Songs Of The Big City (1964). Mayall was in good company, and if his audience would have been baffled by ‘Bare Wires Suite’ a year earlier, tastes had changed and Mayall was now in a position to broaden his horizons. Mixing blues, folk, jazz, R&B, the nascent progressive rock and even a touch of psychedelia, the seven songs that make up the ‘Suite’ work well.
Mayall’s voice sounds perfectly at home throughout, he gets the opportunity to bring out all his ‘har’ instruments, harmonium, harmonica and harpsichord, without harming anyone, and the atmosphere is calm throughout the record, curious considering the ambitious music contained herein. Just play the opening tracks of what was Side Two on the original vinyl: ‘I’m A Stranger’ is straight from the Bobby Bland book of elegant blues, and by contrast ‘No Reply’ is a funky bongo workout that sounds like the result of a stoned afternoon.
There’s the expected driving blues guitar workout in ‘Hartley Quits’, (literally) a record of the moment drummer Keef Hartley left the band, which finds Mick Taylor in skin-peeling form. And ‘Sandy’ is an evocative acoustic slide song, closing the original LP in fine style. Mayall is in strong vocal form, and The Bluesbreakers, augmented with two saxes and Henry Lowther on cornet and violin, and now driven by the tempestuous Jon Hiseman on drums and Tony Reeves’ bass, are more flexible than ever.
What did Mayall’s following of hardcore blues aficionados make of his fresh approach? They made it his highest-charting album in the UK (No 3), and it represented his US breakthrough with a Top 60 placing on Billboard. Those fans were right: Bare Wires is one of the most satisfying albums in Mayall’s catalogue; ‘Suite’ inspiration indeed. - from: https://www.udiscovermusic.com/

The Treble Spankers "Araban" 1994

Wild surf with this fabulous Amsterdam surf instrumental 4 piece! A wave of own compositions and some great covers including Kraftwerk's The Model!
For all those people who have difficulties with the Hollands language:
The Treble Spankers aren't just another band. They're completely dedicated to that almost forgotten, vintage genre of guitar-instrumentals. Played by million selling acts like The Shadows and The Ventures, it was also spreading like a disease among zillions of teenage surfpunk combos throughout the States. They took the smooth edge off the tunefull melodies and compensated their lack of musical talent with a bad attitude and buckets full of sweat. They produced hundreds of obscure 45s that are still an inspiration to The Treble Spankers today.
Another big influence on the musical universe of The Treble Spankers came from the Netherlands: Indo-Rock. Bands of Indonesians living in Holland, playing their instrumentals so touching and obstinate at the same time, it would have given Mr. Marvin instant arthritis if he tried. On top of that good ol' Hank would have collapsed from a combined heartattack and haemerrhoid explosion if he'd bothered to see their stage shows, which are still considered the wildest of this century.
Most of the Spankers met in the legendary combo Ouke Baas. With an outrageous act, the Oukes were The Kings of Sleaze, both on and off stage. Wild rock 'n' roll, porn-movies, abuse of women and animals, it was all part of the true Ouke-lifestyle. On stage, instrumentals were getting more and more important throughout the years. When Ouke decided to split up, it was only natural that The Treble Spankers, were formed.
Today, they are the foremost in instrumental bands. Their music happens to appeal to a huge audience. From middle aged housewives that are slightly disappointed in life, to those snotty, headstrong adolescents. Push any of their silver platters gently in your CD player and let The Treble Spankers capture a warm place in your heart! - By The Black Albino, June 1994

Willy DeVille "Miracle" 1987

Willy DeVille moved from the group Mink DeVille to a solo recording career with very little stylistic change, which is no surprise given that the band was really a front for DeVille's songs and vocals anyway...
...The big change on Miracle is that DeVille collaborates with Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler, whose distinctive fretwork is prominently displayed, and who brings along bandmates like keyboard player Guy Fletcher, and buddies like guitarist Chet Atkins. Nevertheless, the sound is still early- to mid-'60s pop/soul. The album contains DeVille's "Storybook Love," which was used by Knopfler in his score for the film The Princess Bride, and is DeVille's best-known recording. [Miracle was reissued in 1997 on the Raven label with four bonus tracks, including "Heat Of The Moment", "Pullin' My String," "It's So Easy" and an interview with DeVille.] - Review by William Ruhlmann

Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound...
...Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world-weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock & roll, and his rebellious attitude and simple, direct musical attack shared a lot of similarities with rock. However, there was a deep sense of history -- as he would later illustrate with his series of historical albums -- that kept him forever tied with country. And he was one of country music's biggest stars of the '50s and '60s, scoring well over 100 hit singles.
