Well, close enuff as this here wax izza compilation of trax spanning five decades and all concern chicken. Chicken! A concept album about chicken! Take THAT 2112! The liner notes and pix are great because the good folks at Norton care about the Haze and the 21st century and the Haze's contribution to it. Yep. This is the perfect ceedee for any barbeque, oil change or bris. Its even got the demo version of Chicken Walk; served RAW! Mmmm. This would be a good place to start or to add to your Haze collection, sure 'nuff. Git it! - By zack zagatoEvery great songwriter has their great subject, and Hasil Adkins -- rock legend, one-man band, and creator of America's slowest-rising new dance craze, "the Hunch" -- is no exception. A perusal of Adkins' back catalog reveals that "the Haze" is a man who loves his chicken, and for this set the like-minded lunatics at Norton Records have combined six new recordings with highlights from Adkins' previous albums (and a few vintage unreleased cuts) to create Poultry in Motion, a collection of 15 songs about chicken (discussed both as barnyard friends and as part of a well-balanced diet). You get "Chicken Walk," its cousin "Chicken Twist," the manic "Chicken Hunch," no fewer than three takes of "Chicken Hop" (one with previously undocumented West Virginia R&B act the Dynamiters), the warped but soulful "Chicken Blues," and "Chicken on the Bone" in which Adkins repeatedly mentions McDonalds. As a concept album, this approaches a level of genius rarely witnessed since either Tommy by the Who or We're in a Band by the New Duncan Imperials, and it's encouraging to report that the new tunes are just as wild and wondrously incoherent as the stuff the Haze bashed out in the 1950s. The Buff Medways "1914" 2003

I'd never bothered with Billy Childish until now, for three reasons: I won't listen to bands that put an extra 'e' on 'The' (his early outfit, Thee Headcoats); his punk name reminded me of Eater's Dee Generate, and they were crap; and you can count the number of people who successfully mix art and music on one Beefheart. You can call it prejudice, I call it quality control. But I could have been wrong.While I wasn't listening to the resolute painter who used to be very thick with Tracey Emin, The White Stripes, Beck and The Hives were. Childish's lo-fi, staunchly independent approach over 80-odd albums - with this one on Graham Coxon's label - has almost arrived in the mainstream; or rather, the mainstream has moved towards him. His insistence that amateurism is better than professionalism, that rough edges should never be smoothed, no longer puts him in a cult of one. In this, in his prolific output and in his 'singing' voice, Childish is a southern Mark E. Smith. But not so grumpy.
He's proud that 1914 (he thinks our world never recovered from the Great War) shows no progression from recent albums. That it sounds so much like The Who in 1966 is down to the wonderfully erratic high harmonies and Wolf Howard's impersonations of Keith Moon's mayhem on drums. Johnny Barker plays bass, although you don't notice it much - everything is recorded at maximum treble with Childish's vocals rarely venturing below red on the distortion level. His guitar, meanwhile, is all Dave Davies attack and heavy R'n'B riffs.
What's strange, given Childish's choice of painting over conceptual art, is that the concept of the Medways is often better than the reality. An album of lost Kinks out-takes sounds a great idea - but often out-takes don't make the final cut because the chorus isn't up too much, as can be the case here. Still, you can't help but like 'Saucy Jack' - the Ripper song Spinal Tap never wrote, so Billy has done it for them, with a nod to Screaming Lord Sutch and an obvious lift from The Who's 'Happy Jack'; the various tales of old girlfriends (so much more fun than sewing the names in a tent); and 'You Are All Phonies' in which Childish, in a Dalek-like scream, rails at art, TV, shopping and small dogs (quite right, too).
Childish has never courted stardom. Much like Mars and Earth earlier this year, this album is probably the closest he will come to Planet Pop; not because he's trying to, just because of the way they happen to be aligned. Peter Jefferies "Elevator Madness" 1996

Kicking off with the brisk organ / guitar / bass / drums surge-drone of the title track, and with Jefferies yelping through layers of distortion in a more rock & roll way than he has in years, Elevator Madness carefully balances the artist's desire to try something different with further exploration of the styles through which he has made his name…...Recorded in Canada with production from Jefferies' Two Foot Flame bandmate Jean Smith, Elevator offers its share of surprises. Consider "The Strange Case of Stuart Townsend": what initially sounds like Jefferies singing in a very strange register is merely the result of him singing without any extra tape manipulation and/or with much higher-end equipment than he normally uses. It's still very much a Jefferies song, with nice piano work providing the bulk of the music and lyrics detailing the unexpected odyssey of a lost soul in America. The relative crispness of the recording can sometimes work against it -- "World in a Blanket" is, for Jefferies, a straightforward number; it's almost the closest thing he's ever done to the blues, but it doesn't really stand out on any level. There's no lack of the crumbling strangeness or cryptic aggressiveness which Jefferies has made his own, happily -- "Shut Out" is a very good example of this, as he rages over a thrashing, aggro-arrangement bolstered by Smith on guitar. At the same time, misfires crop up; "Loop" doesn't offer much other than a two-minute series of noisy scrapes. In the end, Elevator just doesn't quite have the consistent strength of his earlier works, though there are enough moments to make investigation worthwhile. The stand-out track "Satellites and Sparks" starts with a fine semi-waltz of piano and drums that, after an a cappella break, turns ever more driving and frenetic. - AllMusic Review by Ned Raggetttrax:

GO CAT GO "Let's Hear It Once Again For…" (1990-1992)

Classic modern day rockabilly - a classic of the genre. Their amazing lead singer, Darren Spears, was senselessly murdered in 1993, just as Go Cat Go was ready to break out. (This CD is now out of print and hard to find.)
This is a difficult review to write... I knew the band members years ago when the band still existed. I met them through the wife of their drummer Lance, who was a college friend of mine. I went to the first show because I wanted to help my friend support her honey's band. At the time, I thought I hated rockabilly, so I was set for a night of misery (albeit in good company). By the end of that night, I was a convert and went to shows whenever I could, trying to get others to go hear the best live band in the world.
It was several years later, after graduation and losing touch with old friends, that I found this cd at the store where I worked. I was so excited to see that they had a second album out! I bought the CD immediately and found in the liner notes that their singer Darren had been murdered. I can't put into words how odd it seems to me that he is dead -- he was one of the most alive people I ever met. That kind of "aliveness" infuses Go Cat Go's music from beginning to end. They were the best live band I've ever heard -- and that translates to this album perfectly. It throbs with intensity and yet remains upbeat even through the heavy driving rhythms.
"Let's hear it for Go Cat Go" is an album for any fan of rock music, regardless of whether or not you like rockabilly. I can't give a high enough recommendation for this band and their music -- and that is totally apart from the fact that I knew them when... If you like rockabilly, oldies, or just plain high energy rock'n'roll, buy this album. You'll find a great bunch of musicians who are very talented and love their work. At the very least, you owe it to yourself to hear the incredible guitar and bass work displayed to advantage here. The drums are good too; very solid and punching just right where they should. Try sitting still while this one's on! Wild Billy Childish's ace 100th album has more raw rock-n-roll energy, passionate vocals, and catchy songs than you can shake a chicken at. - amazonI purchased Steady the Buffs by Billy Childish and the Friends of the Buff Medway Fanciers Association (wheee...) after reading an interview with Billy in MOJO.
The shock accompanying my first listen was akin to what happened when I first heard 'Tutti Frutti' by Little Richard: a hiss of static followed by transcendant rock 'n' roll.
You see, the "rock 'n' roll" part of the equation is misisng from a lot, maybe most, of rock music today. The 'too tough to live, too tough to die' ethos has been replaced by hiding the singer behind dancers...until, of course, you want to show her breast. But...I digress.
Billy Childish and his bands are likely the greatest cover band of all time. And, I mean this in the most complementary way.
Evoking pieces of Link Wray, the Kinks, early Who, countless also rans and merging it with a more contemporary Johnny Rotten attitude, Mr. Childish puts the paddles on the heart of rock 'n' roll and brings it back to life. - By Jersey Kidtrax:

Peter Jefferies "Electricity" 1994

Musician from New Zealand. He is known for his involvement with Nocturnal Projections and This Kind Of Punishment as well as his extensive solo and collaborative work. Brother of Graeme Jefferies. - discogsIn 1981 Peter and his brother Graeme Jefferies formed the post-punk band Nocturnal Projections. The band released a few records, and performed around their hometown of New Plymouth, as well as Auckland. After Nocturnal Projections disbanded in 1983, the brothers formed This Kind Of Punishment, and released three full-length albums and an EP. In 1985 Jefferies released the Randolph's Going Home 7" and the "fish out of water" 12" with Shayne Carter. This was followed in 1986 with the At Swim 2 Birds LP, recorded with Jono Lonie, on the Flying Nun label. This was reissued on Xpressway and later on Drunken Fish. The Catapult 7", a collaboration with Robbie Muir, was released on Xpressway in 1989, reissued by the Chicago-based Ajax label in 1991. Further recordings by Jefferies and Muir were released by Ajax in 1992 as the double 7" Swerve. The Last Great Challenge in a Dull World album was released on cassette by the Xpressway label in 1990. Another collaboration with Shayne Carter, the Knocked Out or Thereabout 7", was released on Flying Nun in 1992. The Electricity LP was released on Ajax in 1994, followed by Elevator Madness on Emperor Jones in 1996, then Substatic on Trance Syndicate in 1998, and Closed Circuit in 2001 (also on Trance Syndicate). Jefferies formed 2 Foot Flame with Jean Smith of Mecca Normal. The band released two LPs on Matador Records, 1995's self titled LP, and 1997's Ultra Drowning. The Last Great Challenge in a Dull World was re-issued in 2013 on vinyl by de Stijl records. At Swim 2 Birds was reissued by Flying Nun records in 2017. Jefferies lives in New Plymouth, New Zealand and is employed three days per week at Spotswood College. He is a key member of the Music Department overseeing drum tuition, songwriting, mentoring students and he manages the recording studio every Friday with students enrolled in the school's Gateway Programme. He also runs a weekly session of music at the school's Special Needs Unit. In addition, Jefferies is employed by two other high schools in Taranaki where he teaches drums and songwriting and records students' compositions: Stratford High School and Coastal Taranaki School. Jimmy Smith "Cool Blues" 1958

Cool Blues is a live album by American jazz organist Jimmy Smith featuring performances recorded at Small's Paradise in New York City in 1958 but not released on the Blue Note label until 1980. The album was rereleased on CD with three bonus tracks recorded at the same performance. - wikiAlthough not released until 1980, this 1958 all-star gathering at Small's Paradise in Harlem, New York has become one of Jimmy Smith's most highly regarded Blue Note albums. Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks and Art Blakey join Smith's trio for four extended jams. The first CD issue of this album was withdrawn for pitch problems. Peter Jefferies "The last great Challenge in a dull World" 1990

Jefferies' full solo debut features his return to vocals. It also presents one of the most amazing collections of New Zealand musicians around to assist him; the guest list practically reads like a combination of the Flying Nun and Xpressway rosters, with Bruce Russell, Alastair Galbraith, Kathy Bull, Robbie Yeats, and Michael Morley being just some of the participants……This is still Jefferies' album all the way, though. The fantastic job he does with it is a wonder, working his unique blend of indirect fierceness and restrained passion, lyrically and musically, to newer heights. His piano playing and drumming understandably take pride of place here, as does his unusual speak-singing baritone (though sometimes this crops up in different contexts than before). "Domesticia," for instance, features him singing an a cappella rumination as various kitchen and household noises rattle and clash around him. Perhaps his most moving composition ever (and one of the few on the album he does entirely by himself), "On an Unknown Beach," features just him and his piano, revisiting the darker impulses of his This Kind of Punishment days, but here with a strong, new emotionalism and a finely honed sense of moody beauty. His penchant for tape manipulation and inventive production remains strong throughout; "The House of Weariness" is particularly striking on this point, as heavily flanged vocals from Jefferies play over a calm piano line while other odd noises and vocals appear and disappear almost randomly. The Ajax reissue adds the contemporaneous "Fate of the Human Carbine" single that Jefferies recorded with Robbie Muir as a bonus; its gentle, brooding tension and the almost-rollicking guitar crunch "Catapult" on the flipside further add to the appeal of this excellent album. - AllMusic Review by Ned Raggetttrax:

Following the furious punk explosion of Saturday Night Fever could not have been an easy task for The Devil Dogs. ...stereodrive! is much leaner as a record…...Four of the eight songs are taken from an earlier 45, "L.A.M.F." As it is, ...stereodrive is a low-key release on Japanese indie 1+2 Records, and while the older material, particularly "Coolsville" and "Jump On You," is as fast and focused as anything on Saturday Night Fever, the new tracks are noticeably less spectacular, with only a cover of Eric Carmen's "I Don't Know What I Want" packing any punch. - AllMusic Review by Matt Carlsontrax:

Billy Childish's side project du jour is amazingly good. I picked up this disc recently as one of those Never Heard 'Em, What The Hey purchases…...Threw it in the player last night and was extremely happy with the purchase. If I had to classify this in a genre, I would put it into the junk rock / garage rock arena. Lots of crunchy, jangly guitars, hard hitting drums, and no frills vocals. This is a refreshing shout out to pre - overproduced music a la The Kinks and old Stones. In fact,... I kept thinking that this disc was a re-release of a 60's junk rock band. His latest joint, the Buff Medways, is a little more lighthearted than some of his other bands such as Thee Headcoats. The two albums I've heard by the Buffs seem to pay tribute to rockers of yesteryear. This Is This uses Hendrix as it's inspiration. Several of the tracks are virtual rewrites of Hendrix tunes. Peter Jeffries & Jono Lonie "At Swim 2 Birds" 1987

Jefferies' first solo effort is actually a full collaboration with fellow New Zealand musician Jono Lonie, titled after the cult surrealist novel by Irish author Flann O'Brien…...The album itself is entirely instrumental, and described by Jefferies in the liner notes for the 1997 reissue as being "an antidote of sorts to a previous sound and method of writing," further referring to the recording location at Lonie's house as providing the "ocean, air, light" counterpoint to the often dark and brooding This Kind of Punishment releases. For all this, many hints of Jefferies' TKP work inevitably crop up (as does its overall sonic quality, due in part to also using a TEAC four-track). The most unmistakable connection is his distinct, evocative piano sound, highlighted prominently on songs like (unsurprisingly) "Piano (One)." However, the collaborative nature of the work with Lonie, in the end, does result in distinctly different music all around; when "Piano (One)" really takes off with a restrained but forward-moving keyboard line as Lonie's echoing guitar weaves around the music, it's just one of many moments where things indeed feel much livelier and more brightly beautiful than in the past. Jefferies adds drums at points much as he did in TKP, giving the sprightly drone "Interalia" a rollicking little push where needed and providing the powerful "The Standing Stone" with a pulsing beat under a strong guitar/violin combination. He also plays with tape effects to provide fine twists and turns to the music throughout. Lonie's own work is impeccable; besides providing almost all the guitar, his violin work is equally striking. The title track is one of his finest moments, as his violin melody rises throughout an overlay of reverbed strings that have turned into a weirdly lovely background shading. - AllMusic Review by Ned Raggetttrax:

Looks like the clock stopped sometime in early 1957 for the dreadfully named Jack Rabbit Slim, which I assume is the kind of thing you get in Private Shops the length and breadth of the country. For Jack Rabbit Slim are a rockabilly band. - By Mr. HBeing somewhat of a newcomer to the rockabilly scene, I found my eyes pricking up when I came across Jack Rabbit Slim. I am still trying to get my head around the quiffs, cars and guitars that go with the rockabilly lifestyle. I am eager to hear more and to really get a feel for this whole scene which up until recently was something which I knew very little about...trax:

"Rock'n' Roll Heavyweights" 2014 - EP…Jack Rabbit Slim are one of the UK’s pioneers of this scene and are much loved up and down the country, which is one thing that really draws me to this scene, its sense of community and belonging to something different. Jack Rabbit Slim have a real 1950’s rock and roll sound to them and have much more of an old style sound than some of the more punk orientated bands that are also sometimes linked in with the rockabilly genre. That is the ‘pyscho-billy’ side of things for those not in the know. Constantly nodding to country music - think up beat Johnny Cash, alongside the likes of Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley - Jack Rabbit manage to blend all these things together and yet to sound like something completely new. They sound far more self aware and less ‘rockstar’ brat than Presley, but more worldly wise and tough than the youthfulness you get with Buddy Holly’s musictrax:

"Next Time" 2016 - 7"/45rpmSinger / songwriter / guitarist Bob Butfoy’s personality really shines through in his lyrics. They are heartfelt, honest and straight to the point as is also his delivery. Not trying to imitate anyone or more to the point to take on some sort of Americanised accent, he has his own style, as do his band. It is this quality to the band’s music and their whole feel that leads them to be so well thought of on the thriving UK Rockabilly scene. Billy Childish (born Steven John Hamper, 1 December 1959) is an English painter, author, poet, photographer, film maker, singer and guitarist. Since the late 1970s, Childish has been prolific in creating music, writing and visual art. He has led and played in bands including the Pop Rivets, Thee Milkshakes, Thee Headcoats, and the Musicians of the British Empire, primarily working in the genres of garage rock, punk and surf and releasing more than 100 albums......He is a consistent advocate for amateurism and free emotional expression. Childish co-founded the Stuckism art movement with Charles Thomson in 1999, which he left in 2001. Since then a new evaluation of Childish's standing in the art world has been under way, culminating with the publication of a critical study of Childish's working practice by the artist and writer Neal Brown, with an introduction by Peter Doig, which describes Childish as "one of the most outstanding, and often misunderstood, figures on the British art scene". He is a visiting lecturer at Rochester Independent College. In July 2014 Childish was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts Degree from the University of Kent.
He is known for his explicit and prolific work – he has detailed his love life and childhood sexual abuse, notably in his early poetry and the novels My Fault (1996), Notebooks of a Naked Youth (1997), Sex Crimes of the Futcher (2004) – The Idiocy of Idears (2007), and in several of his songs, notably in the instrumental "Paedophile" (1992) (featuring a photograph of the man who sexually abused him on the front cover) and "Every Bit of Me" (1993). From 1981 until 1985 Childish had a relationship with artist Tracey Emin.

Graeme Jefferies "Message to the Cakekitchen" 1988

Today I have the Jefferies Brothers, both of which are quite important for the alternative scene of the 80s in New Zealand. One more (Graeme), the other maybe a little less (Peter). Both worked together and separately in different bands, which in turn had a certain place in the kiwi scene. We'll get to that next week. Today only the albums that were released under the brothers own name. The only solo album under his own name, with reference to The Cakekitchen in the title, his future band, which then produced a series of albums. - GaiusGraeme Jefferies is a musician from New Zealand. In 1981 Graeme and his brother Peter Jefferies formed the post-punk band Nocturnal Projections. The band released a few records and cassettes, and played regularly around their hometown of New Plymouth, as well as Auckland. After Nocturnal Projections disbanded in 1983, the brothers formed This Kind Of Punishment, and released three full-length albums, and an EP. Following This Kind Of Punishment, Peter pursued a solo career, whilst Graeme formed new band The Cakekitchen. - wikitrax:

The Renderers "In the Sodium Light" 2016

The Renderers' eighth album finds the New Zealand indie rock veterans (led by married couple Maryrose and Brian Crook) at their most brooding and abstract, refraining from the calm yet propulsive rhythms of their previous albums and exploring murkier waters…...The album comes after a series of earthquakes ravaged the duo's hometown of Christchurch, causing them to relocate to California around the time of the release of 2011's A Rocket into Nothing. As such, this album feels even more broken-down and mournful than usual for the group; even if it's not as overtly bluesy or country-influenced as their earlier work, the downtrodden feeling still permeates their songs. "Seaworthy" contains one of the album's most up-front rhythms, with accordion and salty strings mixed in with the swarming guitars, and lyrics that continue the nautical theme present in much of the group's work (most notably 1998 career highlight A Dream of the Sea). "Mr Pulse" gets bleaker, with slowly trudging drums and guitars, bits of vibraphone and piano, insectoid electronic buzzes, and even more sorrowful strings. Brian Crook takes over the microphone on the dirgelike "Strange Love" as well as the slowly seething "Black Saturn." As soon as the album seems like it's going to collapse under the weight of hopelessness, it ends on a surprisingly uplifting note with "You Raise Me," where Maryrose reaches up through the melancholy and regret, addressing someone for saving her and exclaiming "Can't you feel it?" The song is a much-needed respite from the doom and gloom that accumulate throughout the album's preceding songs, and leaves the listener coming away with a hopeful feeling. The Renderers have never been the band to turn to for instant gratification, so it seems redundant to state that this isn't the most immediately satisfying album you're likely to hear, but it's as ultimately rewarding as most of the band's catalog. - AllMusic Review by Paul Simpsontrax:
