Great spacey apocalyptic psychedelic surf - strange and weird - surf the way you never heard before! I freakin' adore the Coffin Daggers...
...It's a sick, unrequited, maybe-gonna-stalk-'em adoration, and it's in no danger of letting up. Calling theirs surf music seems to be a diagnosis of elimination, but they don't shy from the label, so I won't. But still. Surf music? Surfing on the River Styx, maybe ... Launched three and a half years ago by Tom Jones, Jr.-looking guitarist Viktor Dominicis (formerly of Reagan Youth and Nausea), Coffin Daggers are an amalgam of Dick Dale, Nosferatu, and Jack Marshall (in fact, they did a smokin' rendition of The Munsters theme when I saw them last Saturday night at Desmond's). Instrumental Horror Rock, all Sex Waxed up.
Tsunami-terror tunes aside, this is no novelty band. "Amazing" is the best way to describe their live show (sorry to fawn). One can easily imagine the bar filled with sunburned noses and beehives in clam-diggers, a time trip made even more convincing by their affection for vintage equipment. So deep is this affection, that they traveled to Atlanta last year, to make their first album. Their aim was to record live on analog, without overdubs, and when they saw the equipment displayed on the website of the studio owned by Man or Astro-man? (like online porn for audiophiles), it was enough to lure them south.

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers "John Mayall Plays John Mayall" (Recorded live at Klooks Kleek, Hampstead, London on Monday 7th December 1964) - mono

John Mayall's debut album, recorded live in December 1964, is a little unjustly overlooked, as it was recorded shortly before the first of the famous guitarists schooled in the Bluesbreakers (Eric Clapton) joined the band...
...With Roger Dean on guitar (and the rhythm section who'd play on the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton album, bassist John McVie and drummer Hughie Flint), it has more of a rock/R&B feel, rather like the early Rolling Stones, than the purer bluesier material Mayall would usually stick to in his subsequent recordings. The record doesn't suffer for this, however, moving along quite powerfully, and -- unusually for a British R&B/blues band of the time -- featuring almost nothing but original material, all penned by Mayall. Nigel Stanger's saxophone adds interesting touches to a few tracks, the songs are quite good, and while Dean's guitar and Mayall's vocals aren't on the same level as the best instrumentalists and singers in the British blues-rock movement, they're satisfactory. [The 2006 U.K. expanded CD edition added five enjoyable cuts that round up everything else recorded by the pre-Eric Clapton version of the Bluesbreakers, including the 1964 single "Crawling Up a Hill"/"Mr. James"; the early 1965 single "Crocodile Walk"/"Blues City Shakedown"; and the February 1965 outtake "My Baby Is Sweeter," which first showed up on the early-'70s British compilation Thru the Years. Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons "Dexterity" 1981

In September 1981, a revised version of Hats Off Step Lively was issued in North America, titled simply Step Lively. The album featured a selection of tracks from the Hats Off Step Lively and Dexterity albums, augmented by two newly recorded cover tunes ("Gimme Little Sign" and "But It's Alright") produced by H.W. Casey and Rick Finch of K.C. and the Sunshine Band...
...However, the group had fractured by this point (Young, Power and Wilde all dropped out) and was not available to promote the North American LP release. Step Lively ultimately flopped commercially despite some good reviews. Young and Power joined Rock Doctors, and Wilde formed his own band, Big Kombi. Camilleri, Burstin and Faehse then gathered a new rhythm section featuring bassist Simon Gyllies (Mondo Rock), and drummer Freddie Strauks (Skyhooks) and started exploring Latin American rhythms, particularly salsa. Canadian-American roots rock group. Gradually came together from 1960 to 1964 as Ronnie Hawkins' backing band The Hawks...
...Upon leaving Hawkins in 1964, they were briefly known as Levon And The Hawks. In 1965, they released a single under the name Canadian Squires. In late summer 1965, Bob Dylan was looking for a backup band for his first U.S. "electric" tour, and Levon And The Hawks were recommended by blues singer John Paul Hammond. Sessions with Dylan ended in October 1967. Stories vary as to the manner in which they ultimately adopted the name "The Band", but by 1968, with the release of their first album Music From Big Pink, they were performing officially as The Band. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994 (performer).

The Doors "Other Voices" 1971

To many enthusiasts, the loss of Jim Morrison (vocals/lyrics) likewise meant the passing of the Doors. Certainly the band's focal point changed on the two long-players that the trio of John Densmore (drums/vocals), Ray Manzarek (keyboards/bass pedals/vocals), and Robbie Krieger (guitar/vocals) issued in the immediate post-Morrison era...
...As the "surviving" Doors had been working on ideas to present to Morrison -- if and when he returned from a sabbatical in Paris, France -- there is an organic flow that had spilled over from the L.A. Woman (1970) album. Another undeniable plus to Other Voices (1971) is that after being relegated as sidemen, each of the players is given an outlet for their songs and underutilized talents. Manzarek's bluesy opener "In the Eye of the Sun" has hints of "Down So Long" and "The Changeling." However, its true earmarks are the greasy slide guitar licks proffered by Krieger during the solo, and in response to Manzarek's lead vocal. Speaking of the guitarist, he is credited with the bulk of the material, beginning with the whimsical ode to monogamy "Variety Is the Spice of Life." Particularly suitable here is Krieger's nod to the Lovin' Spoonful's "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind." The ethereal Densmore/Krieger composition "Ships w/ Sails" adopts the languid vibe of "Riders on the Storm," especially throughout the instrumental jam. Reaching back to the raw and ready sound of "Roadhouse Blues" is the semi-biographical and definitely metaphoric "Tightrope Ride" with direct references to the recently deceased Rolling Stones co-founder Brian Jones and seemingly implied about Morrison. The band charge forward in pure power trio mode with plenty of interaction between the primary participants -- most notably Krieger's fiery fretwork and Manzarek's authoritative vocals. "Down on the Farm" is one of the less stylistically cohesive numbers, vacillating from the serene and slightly Polynesian section that breaks out into a rural hoedown before reverting back again. Yet the gorgeous melody and arrangement defy any of the other (slightly dated) incongruities. The upbeat "I'm Horny, I'm Stoned" is undoubtedly a reflection of both where Krieger -- the song's author -- as well as the survivors of the emotionally frazzled '60s collective heads were at. The mixing of ennui with an underlying paranoia provides a fascinating contrast. There is a soulful everyman quality to Manzarek's embodiment of the "Wandering Musician" that reiterates his considerable range as a performer. While not an overt homage or tribute to Morrison, there are a few obvious parallels within "Hang on to Your Life." The tune progresses through several distinct musical sections as the tempo incrementally accelerates to double time before concluding in an ultimate cacophony. No subtlety needed here. Although they'd never regain their former acclaim, the Doors would take this platter into the Top 40 and pull off a successful tour behind the project. The three-person lineup wasn't done yet as Full Circle (1972) followed the next year, after which Densmore, Krieger, and Manzarek laid the Doors to rest. - Review by Lindsay Planer

"The Rubble Collection" Vol. 20 [10 CD Box Set No. 2] 2007

This is: Psychedelic Rock, Acid Rock, Freakbeat, Garage Rock, Mod, Pop.
The second box in as many years of a truckload of obscure British psychedelia. Here are ten more CDs' worth of serious rarities by some bands that barely scratched the surface of the British freakbeat scene during rock's golden era, and a few who went on to other things. In all, there are 128 cuts here, all compiled and annotated by Phil Smee -- of Perfumed Garden fame (also issued by Past And Present). While some of these acts, such as the Poets, the Human Instinct, Outer Limits, and Denny Laine left marks on the scene, as did mod bands such as les Fleur De Lys and the Buzz; many others came from the swamp and returned with only these few minutes of glory for all of their efforts. As one would imagine, this is a mixed bag, with some of this material being absolutely sublime, while some never should have been recorded at all, with the vast majority falling in between the two poles somewhere. Nonetheless, for those who have been bitten by the Nuggets bug, and procured the highly sought after Perfumed Garden volumes, this second set of Rubble will no doubt feed the jones in you like nothing else. I'm sure there are musicians who forgot they recorded these tracks :-) Unlike some other series where after about 4 discs, the quality heads seriously south, these are very consistent up to the very end.
And yes, there is actually a difference between the first 10 and this set. The first ten do contain more heavy green dripping fuzztone psychedelic and these tend to veer towards more pop psychedelic though we're not exactly talking about Ron Dante ... perhaps it's just the sound quality is a bit better, they simply might be more seasoned musicians or perhaps they were taking the lead of where their more success brethern were taking, I'm not sure. I was not alive then and I'm no music historian. All I judge on is quality and the genre - these sets are obviously a big commitment financially and not for everyone but if you're a serious or avid collector of music, this is a great set with tracks you will have to search years to find again. If you love psych of any kind, you absolutely need this set. [Amazon customer review]

Elvis Costello & The Attractions "Punch The Clock" 1983

Perhaps frustrated by the lack of commercial success Imperial Bedroom encountered, Elvis Costello enlisted British hitmakers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley to produce its follow-up, Punch the Clock. The difference between the two records is immediately noticeable...
...Punch the Clock has a slick, glossy surface, complete with layered synthesizers, horns, studio effects, and the backup vocals of Afrodiziak. The approach isn't necessarily a misguided one, since Costello is as much a pop musician as he is a singer/songwriter and many of the best moments on the record -- "Everyday I Write the Book," "Let Them All Talk" -- work well as shiny pop singles. However, the problem with Punch the Clock is that Costello is entering a fallow songwriting period; it is his least consistent set of original songs to date. The best moments, the antiwar ballad "Shipbuilding" and the eerie pseudo-rap "Pills and Soap," are as articulate and effective as any of his past work, but frequently Costello falls short of meeting his standards, particularly when he's trying to write a song in the style of his older songs. Nevertheless, the sheen of the Langer and Winstanley production makes Punch the Clock a pleasurable listen. The Church "Seance" 1983

Electric Lash was a minor hit for the band, chiming guitars and sing-songy anthem hurt by Ploog's 21 gun salute drums...
...Seance, from the album cover, a newcomer to The Church's music could be forgiven that this was the prime Goth album out there. While the music could be described as such, and adherents of the Gothic movement have turned up to The Church's gigs, this album defies any such label. Gone is the clarity of Bob Clearmountain and in comes the bullet-blasting remixing of Nick Launay.
The album was originally produced by the band with John Bee. Launay allegedly came in and remixed it according to his own dictates. Launay, all the rage with Australian bands during the early 80's, has given Ploog's drums such a blam blam ricochet style, you'd think there was a robot on the skins sometimes in here.
Seance is a far more subtle album than The Blurred Crusade, softer, more bass-heavy, and much darker lyrically. It starts of with the orchestral and stringy Fly which segues into the thumping One Day, both songs are better described as one monolithic statement to Kilbey's recondite thought processes. - from: http://www.ulujain.org/music/church3.shtml

John Hiatt "Warming Up To The Ice Age" 1985

Hiatt turned to veteran country producer Norbert Putnam here, but the result still rocked hard, with the occasional soul touch (notably those obnoxious thumb-struck basslines that are so prevalent in '80s music)...
...Highlights here are "The Usual," later covered by Bob Dylan, and "She Said the Same Things to Me." There is also an odd duet with Elvis Costello on the old Spinners hit "Living a Little, Laughing a Little" (try and tell them apart). Critics' darling or not, when this album went into the tank, Geffen became the third label to drop Hiatt.

"The Rubble Collection" Vol. 17 [10 CD Box Set No. 2] 2007

This is: Psychedelic Rock, Acid Rock, Freakbeat, Garage Rock, Mod, Pop.
The second box in as many years of a truckload of obscure British psychedelia. Here are ten more CDs' worth of serious rarities by some bands that barely scratched the surface of the British freakbeat scene during rock's golden era, and a few who went on to other things. In all, there are 128 cuts here, all compiled and annotated by Phil Smee -- of Perfumed Garden fame (also issued by Past And Present). While some of these acts, such as the Poets, the Human Instinct, Outer Limits, and Denny Laine left marks on the scene, as did mod bands such as les Fleur De Lys and the Buzz; many others came from the swamp and returned with only these few minutes of glory for all of their efforts. As one would imagine, this is a mixed bag, with some of this material being absolutely sublime, while some never should have been recorded at all, with the vast majority falling in between the two poles somewhere. Nonetheless, for those who have been bitten by the Nuggets bug, and procured the highly sought after Perfumed Garden volumes, this second set of Rubble will no doubt feed the jones in you like nothing else. And yes, there is actually a difference between the first 10 and this set. The first ten do contain more heavy green dripping fuzztone psychedelic and these tend to veer towards more pop psychedelic though we're not exactly talking about Ron Dante ... perhaps it's just the sound quality is a bit better, they simply might be more seasoned musicians or perhaps they were taking the lead of where their more success brethern were taking, I'm not sure. I was not alive then and I'm no music historian. All I judge on is quality and the genre - these sets are obviously a big commitment financially and not for everyone but if you're a serious or avid collector of music, this is a great set with tracks you will have to search years to find again. King's debut album, Steps In Time, is an entertaining collection of new wave dance-pop, highlighted by the single "Love & Pride."..
...Nothing else on the record quite matches "Love & Pride" in terms of energy or hooks, but the album still makes for entertaining listening, provided you are a new wave aficionado. This is: Psychedelic Rock, Acid Rock, Freakbeat, Garage Rock, Mod, Pop.
The second box in as many years of a truckload of obscure British psychedelia. Here are ten more CDs' worth of serious rarities by some bands that barely scratched the surface of the British freakbeat scene during rock's golden era, and a few who went on to other things. In all, there are 128 cuts here, all compiled and annotated by Phil Smee -- of Perfumed Garden fame (also issued by Past And Present). While some of these acts, such as the Poets, the Human Instinct, Outer Limits, and Denny Laine left marks on the scene, as did mod bands such as les Fleur De Lys and the Buzz; many others came from the swamp and returned with only these few minutes of glory for all of their efforts. As one would imagine, this is a mixed bag, with some of this material being absolutely sublime, while some never should have been recorded at all, with the vast majority falling in between the two poles somewhere. Nonetheless, for those who have been bitten by the Nuggets bug, and procured the highly sought after Perfumed Garden volumes, this second set of Rubble will no doubt feed the jones in you like nothing else. I was not alive then and I'm no music historian. All I judge on is quality and the genre - these sets are obviously a big commitment financially and not for everyone but if you're a serious or avid collector of music, this is a great set with tracks you will have to search years to find again. The Doors "L.A. Woman" 1971

The final album with Jim Morrison in the lineup is by far their most blues-oriented, and the singer's poetic ardor is undiminished, though his voice sounds increasingly worn and craggy on some numbers...
...Actually, some of the straight blues items sound kind of turgid, but that's more than made up for by several cuts that rate among their finest and most disturbing work. The seven-minute title track was a car-cruising classic that celebrated both the glamour and seediness of Los Angeles; the other long cut, the brooding, jazzy "Riders on the Storm," was the group at its most melodic and ominous. It and the far bouncier "Love Her Madly" were hit singles, and "The Changeling" and "L'America" count as some of their better little-heeded album tracks. An uneven but worthy finale from the original quartet. - Review by Richie Unterberger

The Coffin Daggers "The Coffin Daggers" 2002

The Coffin Daggers' self-titled debut begins with an explosion of in-your-face surf guitar rock dubbed "Psychonaut" and doesn't let up one ounce over the next 14 tracks.
As a bona fide twang-instrumental junkie, I can say that i have never heard a band in the genre exhibit the pure heaviness of The Coffin Daggers. Most groups of this ilk, from Los Straitjackets to Jon and the Nightriders, always opt for a clean sound that is played quickly but without menace. Others, like The Mono Men, go for the cheapo lo-fi approach. Back in 1991, 16 Tons made the most metal-sounding, '50s-style instros around. But no one comes close to The Coffin Daggers when it comes to all-out intensity. Tracks like Psychonaut and Dr. Guillotine will stomp a mudhole into your fragile minds. Despite the fact that it's become quite cute to cover old rock chestnuts with twang, how many bands could take on the task of covering the enitre eight-minutes plus of Pink Floyd's Interstellar Overdrive, crush your mind and still come out on top? not too shabby, eh? Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons "Screaming Targets" 1979

In 1979, Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons signed with Mushroom Records after Oz Records had folded. By now, the songwriting was being looked after by Burstin, Camilleri, and Faehse working together as a trio, and Camilleri was the group's lone front man. As well, the group had included another musical direction: reggae...
...Meanwhile, Mushroom was eager to connect with the 'new wave' in England and brought over Peter Solley, an English producer and latter-day Procol Harum member, to produce another Mushroom artist, The Sports. One night Solley saw Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons perform, and on the strength of their new song, "Shape I'm In", asked to produce the group. The first single, "Hit and Run", from the album, Screaming Targets, was pop reggae and reached No. 12 on the charts in August 1979. Camilleri said he "never thought 'Hit and Run' would do anything but maybe the lick was infectious enough – though as a song it was a bit stupid – but it got us a deal all over the world. The Doors "Morrison Hotel" 1970

In late 1969, the Doors were reeling. That March, singer Jim Morrison was charged, tried, and convicted of obscenity for allegedly exposing himself at a concert in Miami. It resulted in promoters canceling future gigs. The July release of The Soft Parade provided more angst. Tired of the sound that governed their previous outings, the band incorporated horn and string arrangements with a new melodic accessibility...
...It signaled an unwelcome change for critics (though it did reach number six and was radically reappraised posthumously). In November they entered the studio with producer Paul Rothchild exhausted, stressed, and angry. Going back to blues and R&B basics seemed like the only direction to pursue.
Morrison Hotel is often dubbed the Doors' blues album, due to raucous opener "Roadhouse Blues," one of the band's most enduring tunes. (Interestingly, it was issued as the B-side of first single "You Make Me Real.") Ray Manzarek leaves behind his organ to pound an upright piano, while guitarist Robby Krieger adds a filthy Chicago-styled riff, prodded by a rock shuffle from drummer John Densmore. The Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian (using the pseudonym "G. Puglese") provides its iconic harmonica wail. "Waiting for the Sun" is one of four tunes Morrison composed himself, and a psychedelic holdover from the 1968 album bearing the same title. Manzarek plays a spacy harpsichord as Krieger offers trippy slide guitar. "You Make Me Real" underscores the blues-rock motif, with roiling electric piano, stinging guitar vamps, and Densmore's swaggering shuffle. Morrison lords over all with his boozy, baritone roar. The organ returns on the downright funky boogie of "Peace Frog," as Morrison sings of "blood in the streets" addressing the civic unrest then gripping the nation. He counters near the end with a spoken stanza from his optimistic poem Newborn Awakening. "Ship of Fools" contains shifting time signatures that cross jazz, R&B, and pop, while the buoyant "Land Ho," offers an adventure-laden lyric in a sprawling rock & roll sea chanty, where Manzarek wields his organ like a mad calliope. Krieger's deep, bluesy, minor-key intro to "The Spy" is framed by jazzy electric piano and Morrison's sultry delivery, which approximates a lounge singer. "Queen of the Highway" is fueled by Densmore's powerful drumming and Manzarek's creative use of the Rhodes piano. One of the Doors' most progressive cuts, it seamlessly integrates blues, jazz, and spacy psychedelia. "Maggie McGill" closes the circle on the blues tip. Krieger's unruly, double-tracked slide riffs duel with a pulsing, distorted organ; Densmore bridges them under Morrison's slithering growl -- it foreshadows the singing style he displayed so abundantly on L.A. Woman in 1971. Blues and R&B were foundational to the Doors' musical vocabulary. They employed them to some degree on all of their albums, but never as consistently, adeptly, or provocatively as they did on Morrison Hotel, with absolutely stunning results. - Review by Thom Jurek

Dwight Yoakam "Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars..." 2016

One described as "the man who was too country for Nashville," Dwight Yoakam has always been an artist who is passionate about the themes and variations of classic country, but he's never treated his beloved Bakersfield sound as a museum piece...
...In Yoakam's world, country is not like a vintage auto that's too precious to drive, but a dinged-up but still powerful hot rod that has plenty of miles left in it, and he's happy to prove it by taking it out on the highway and opening the throttle. Judging from his 2016 album, Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars…, Yoakam views bluegrass much the same way; this is his first album in the revved-up down-home style, and while the acoustic backing gives Yoakam's music a different spin, the energy, passion, and unpretentious smarts of these performances are absolutely in his wheelhouse. For Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars…, Yoakam has opted to re-record a handful of tunes from his songbook (with the exception of a re-working of Prince's "Purple Rain"), and while that might seem a bit lazy, by the time he's done, these songs have taken on a different music personality, and if these versions may be quieter than the originals, Yoakam is putting his all into this music, and the band is expert and muscular at the same time. The band Yoakam assembled for Swimmin' Pools is first class, including Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Bryan Sutton on guitar, Adam Steffey on mandolin, and Scott Vestal on banjo. The pickers respect the craft of Yoakam's tunes while giving them a high-lonesome tone that's powerful and satisfying, and the harmonies mesh beautifully with Yoakam's confident lead vocals. And while the notion of Yoakam doing a bluegrass cover of "Purple Rain" might sound like a high concept hipster joke, he wrings loneliness and loss from that tune with a delivery that's moving without becoming histrionic. A belated companion piece to the underrated 2000 effort dwightyoakamacoustic.net, Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars... is a stylistic detour for Dwight Yoakam, but its execution sums up many of his greatest strengths as an artist, and it's a strong, powerful piece of work that's passionate and plenty of fun at the same time. - Review by Mark Deming

"The Rubble Collection" Vol. 13 [10 CD Box Set No. 2] 2007

This is: Psychedelic Rock, Acid Rock, Freakbeat, Garage Rock, Mod, Pop.
The second box in as many years of a truckload of obscure British psychedelia. Here are ten more CDs' worth of serious rarities by some bands that barely scratched the surface of the British freakbeat scene during rock's golden era, and a few who went on to other things. In all, there are 128 cuts here, all compiled and annotated by Phil Smee -- of Perfumed Garden fame (also issued by Past And Present). While some of these acts, such as the Poets, the Human Instinct, Outer Limits, and Denny Laine left marks on the scene, as did mod bands such as les Fleur De Lys and the Buzz; many others came from the swamp and returned with only these few minutes of glory for all of their efforts. As one would imagine, this is a mixed bag, with some of this material being absolutely sublime, while some never should have been recorded at all, with the vast majority falling in between the two poles somewhere. Nonetheless, for those who have been bitten by the Nuggets bug, and procured the highly sought after Perfumed Garden volumes, this second set of Rubble will no doubt feed the jones in you like nothing else. I'm sure there are musicians who forgot they recorded these tracks :-) Unlike some other series where after about 4 discs, the quality heads seriously south, these are very consistent up to the very end.
And yes, there is actually a difference between the first 10 and this set. The first ten do contain more heavy green dripping fuzztone psychedelic and these tend to veer towards more pop psychedelic though we're not exactly talking about Ron Dante ... perhaps it's just the sound quality is a bit better, they simply might be more seasoned musicians or perhaps they were taking the lead of where their more success brethern were taking, I'm not sure. I was not alive then and I'm no music historian. All I judge on is quality and the genre - these sets are obviously a big commitment financially and not for everyone but if you're a serious or avid collector of music, this is a great set with tracks you will have to search years to find again.
