Dragstrip "Reaction Time" 1996

Dragstip are an updated dick dale surf-rock band for the nineties -not to be missed! Frankie Camero is an outstanding guitar player on fire throughout. Their cover of B.O.C.'s "Don't Fear the Reaper" was a smash hit on college radio. - By llyfreI'd never heard of Dragstrip when I found it in Borders years ago, but the obvious car theme piqued my interest, so I bought it. Turned out that I had just purchased some rocking surf music, good instrumental stuff along the lines of early Dick Dale. When the CD was broken in a move, I set out to replace it, and so now I'm on my second disc. It cost a bit more this time, as I had to buy from a second-hand vendor as it has been out of print for some time now. But it was worth it, as it rocks just as hard the second time around. My favorite track is their remake of "Don't Fear The Reaper", as the original Blue Oyster Cult song has long been a favorite and this version with no vocals is done very well. In fact, every song is good, and they run together well for a nice listen when I'm not into some screechy singer. It's harder to find, and it costs a bit, but it has been worth it. - By Max Persiantrax:

The Clean "Odditties" 1982

The Clean are an indie rock band that formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1978, and have been described as the most influential band to come from the Flying Nun label, whose repertoire included many major components of the "Dunedin sound"…...Led through a number of early rotating line-ups by brothers Hamish and David Kilgour, the band settled on their well-known and current line-up with bassist Robert Scott. Steeleye Span "Hark! - The Village wait" 1970

I started off liking All Around My Hat and Commoner's Crown more than this album, but the more I listen to this album the more it becomes my favorite Steeleye Span album. As the reviewer noted above, the dual vocals of Gay Woods and Maddy Prior are amazing. The songs themselves are wonderfully arranged traditional songs. I don't easily tire of this album, whereas AAMH and CC are perhaps a little played-out for me now. - Jon LOriginally released by British RCA, this debut album by Steeleye Span's original lineup -- Ashley Hutchings (bass), Tim Hart (electric guitar, electric dulcimer, banjo, harmonium, vocals), Maddy Prior (vocals, banjo), Terry Woods (mandola, mandolin, electric guitar, vocals), and Gay Woods (vocals, concertina, bodhran) -- barely made it out the door before Gay and Terry Woods exited. This was probably the best singing edition of Steeleye Span, with Gay Woods and Maddy Prior melding beautifully on tracks like "Dark-Eyed Sailor" and "My Johnnie Was a Shoemaker," and Terry Woods adding some realistic coarseness on "The Hills of Greenmore." The sound is fully electric here (with superb playing on the epic "Lowlands of Holland"), if not as aggressive or well crafted as later albums -- Hart, Hutchings, and Woods comprise a good core band, and Gerry Conway and Fairport Convention's Dave Mattacks sit in on drums. - AllMusic Review by Bruce Edertrax:

"Ugly Things" Australian Rock Archives Vol 4 / 1989

U.S. and U.K. audiences were totally unaware at the time, but Australia was home to a thriving garage-punk scene in the mid-'60s……The scope and output of these groups were limited by the country's population, which was only about 15 million or somewhat less, after all. But there was a surprisingly large number of fine singles, some of which measured up to the manic, over-the-top R&B-derived energy of anything coming from Texas, California, or London. Volume 1 is by far the best of the series and, indeed, one of the best '60s garage compilations ever, filled with good hooks, screams, and crunching riffs. The second and third volumes aren't nearly as good, peppered with undistinguished covers and unmemorable tracks, although some excellent ones do surface, including some from neighboring New Zealand; the best of these two LPs should have been combined into one. Raven has put out a best-of compilation CD from the Ugly Things series that draws from all of the volumes and adds some other cuts.trax:

Dr. Frankenstein's Laboratory "Crime Scenes and Murder Songs" 2005

Frantic, crazy, melodic surf / instrumental rock n' roll.In the summer of 94, André Joaquim and Filipa Galhardo start jamming, after some weeks Miguel Almeida joins on the drums. In the beginning the band used to play 60's Garage, Cramps and Stones covers, but soon they went InstruMental and name themselves Dr. Frankenstein because of their love for B-movies and american trash culture.
In '95 the band enter the comp. Portugal Rockers released by Metralha Records. Without even giving a gig the Dr. Frankenstein record, Brain Wash and A Mulher Raio-X. In the same year while recording the first demo-tape Miguel Almeida leave the band.
During '96 BeeKeeper / Milkshake Records invites Dr. Frankenstein to enter the acclaimed Portuguese comp. SuperMarket Music. The band rehearse 2000 Lb. Bee a cover from the Ventures and record it with André playing the drums.
The band continued without a drummer, but in '98 after a The Cramps gig in Lisbon Luis Futre (from Milkshake) presents Sérgio Lemos to André and Filipa, after some rehearsals they went to S.T.S. and record Ghost City E.P.
On September '98 Filipa leave the band, and on December 5th 98 Dr. Frankenstein make their first gig has a Guitar/Drums Duo.
The year of '99 was just filled with concerts, and in January 2000 Luis Manso joins Dr. Frankenstein. Meanwhile Filipa Galhardo joined again and after some gigs the band finally get a new record contract with Low Fly Records.
The first C.D. was called The Lost Tapes from Dr. Frankenstein's Lab. and was released on October 1st 2000 at Low Fly's Dance Party on Palco 6 - Sound System.
In 2001 the band is promoting the record, now with a horn section (Alexandre Catalino - Trumpet, Pedro Rolão - Saxophone & Pedro Cabanelas - Trombone), presenting the record on the most important festivals in Portugal, making the opening act for bands like Man Or Astroman?, and Speedball Baby. During the same year they recorded the 2nd C.D. titled The Psychotic Sounds of Dr. Frankenstein.
In February 8th 2002 Porno Star E.P. is released, and in May the second C.D. is released. In December Dr. Frankenstein plays in the place where they've played live for the first time ending the Psychotic Sounds chapter.
2003 starts with the making and recording of 7 tracks for a new E.P., but the departure of Sérgio Lemos and Luis Manso makes that work left behind.
Soon after Dr. Frankenstein gets new members besides André and Filipa, the usual partners in crime Pedro Rolão (ex. sax) now on Upright Bass, Alexandre Catalino on Trumpet, the new members André Marques on Drums and a long time band friend Frederico Baltazar on Guitar.
After some warm up gigs that reveals Dr. Frankenstein more in shape than ever, the band plays at Wild Weekend 4 in Benidorm (Spain) playing outside Portugal for the first time.

Why doesn't someone put a good amp on the market? I would never buy another box after the trouble I've had with them. Following the warm reception given to Kent's Finders Keepers: Motown Girls 1961-1967 collection, and in the spirit of equal opportunity, they felt it only right to ask Motown for permission to raid their master tape vault for tracks for a companion all-male set…...The resulting Satisfaction Guaranteed! Motown Guys 1961-1969 includes some of the company's biggest stars the Miracles, Four Tops, Temptations and Marvin Gaye alongside talent such as Jr Walker, the Spinners, Edwin Starr, Jimmy Ruffin, Marv Johnson, Shorty Long and Bobby Taylor; and a couple of acts who have never had any of their Motown recordings issued before Johnny Bristol and the Quails. In all, 24 tracks by 24 artists. The Marvin Gaye, Temptations, Four Tops and Freddie Gorman titles were first released as downloads in 2013 but have never appeared on CD before (or on vinyl, for that matter). Miriam "Nobody's Baby" 2014

What a wonderful album. Miriam Linna, a longtime hero of rock n roll, with both her defunct magazine Kicks, one of the greatest magazines, done by her and her husband Billy Miller, who were also together in the A-Bones and before that The Zantees, and who also run the fantastic label Norton Records, she has put out a record so great it surpassed my expectations……Opening with a song by the great Del Shannon (Del lives forever!), a song off his Home and Away masterpiece, she does a superb cover of it. The Everly Brothers' So Lonely follows and again she is covering songs that many huge artists would fall flat on, and triumphs. This whole album is terrific; take There Goes My Babe. This is AMAZING. Miriam took a great demo by Neil Young, and transformed it into a classic '60s Girl Group sound. FANTASTIC!!! I'm Nobody's Baby Now was a song by Reparata and the Delrons. That I didn't hear theirs until I first heard this is one of many reasons I thank her. Great cover. Her cover of Bobby Darin's Not For Me; we're talking one of the greatest songs ever written! What a superb choice of material on this album! Nothing less should be expected of Miriam. I mean, the Ramones' Questioningly - of course. This whole album is totally great, Miriam's voice is wonderful to me, and this has great production ranging from the '60s girl group sound to a nice '60s garage sound. Johnny Adams "I Won't Cry" The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959-1964

Ace's 2015 compilation I Won't Cry: The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959-1964 covers familiar territory but in an appealingly thorough fashion. Adams had only one nationally charting hit on Ric or Ron -- "A Losing Battle," which went to 27 in 1962 -- but they were popular in his native New Orleans and over the years remained favorites of fans of Crescent City soul…...Adams tended to be a little smoother than a lot of his Big Easy contemporaries: there's a recognizable NO lilt to some of the songs, but he was more of a crooner, sounding equally comfortable on dramatic ballads and lusher pop crossovers. This characteristic meant that he could slide with the smoother soul styles of the late '60s and '70s, which is when he gained his greatest popularity, but these somewhat grittier productions also suit him well; it's a nice blend of his velvet touch and earthy rhythms. I Won't Cry showcases this appealing combination. At 24 tracks, it's ten songs longer than the 1991 Rounder compilation of the same name and that extra space is warranted because each of the sides here has considerable charm; there's a reason why Adams is a widely acclaimed soul singer, and many of the reasons can be heard on this fine collection.(Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic)

The Three O'Clock "Vermillion" 1988

For Completists… This one has Jason Falkner with a couple of songwriting credits (and on the cover!).It's said that Prince signed the Three O'Clock to his Paisley Park label after they were dropped by IRS having never heard a note of their music but knowing that they were friends of the Bangles, for whom he had previously written "Manic Monday." It seems like the Three O'Clock's paisley underground pop would have been a perfect fit for Prince's suitably-named label, especially since Around the World in a Day had shown that the two camps shared several influences, but for some reason, 1988's Vermillion completely drops the group's previous association with psychedelia, leaving them a mediocre, slightly bubblegummy pop band. There are a couple of good songs here, especially Michael Quercio's gentle ballad "Through the Sleepy Town" and Jason Falkner's "Love Has No Heart," but they're overshadowed by inoffensive at best, painful at worst trifles like "Love Explosion" and "World on Fire." Ian Ritchie's production is horrible, over-synthesized, and sequenced to within an inch of its life, but the nadir is Prince's contribution, the gimmicky "Neon Telephone," which sounds like it took less time to write than it does to listen to. Vermillion was the Three O'Clock's final album, and it's a shame that they had to go out on such a bum note. - AllMusic Review by Stewart Masontrax:

"Speak Easy" The RPM Records Story Volume 2 1954-57 CD2

The second and final volume in Ace UK's overview of the Modern subsidiary label RPM picks up where the first one, No More Doggin', left off in December 1953. It continues through to the label's closure in early 1957 in order to make way for the new Kent subsidiary......As with the first volume, the focus here is on quality blues, R&B and doo wop, with occasional forays into rockabilly and rock'n'roll representing the repertoire from the end of the label's life.

The vast majority of the tracks have been mastered from fresh transfers of the original master tapes. Where dubs have had to be used in absence of tape, those tracks have also been mastered from new sources.

In keeping with both the previous volume and our earlier 2-CD overview of Modern subsidiary Flair, we have tried to use alternate takes wherever possible of tracks already available on an Ace CD. Sixteen of the tracks and takes have not been issued before, while almost three dozen of the 54 tracks have never appeared on an Ace CD. All of the label's major artists of this period are represented. As always a generously annotated and illustrated booklet complements a fine audio experience.(The Guardian)

The companion piece to the third volume of Verve's mix CD series, this disc features the unmixed, untouched original versions of songs found in remix form on Verve Remixed, Vol. 3......Focusing less on groove-oriented songs featured in previous editions, this time around the disc salutes the ladies of jazz. Some of the greatest names in the history of vocal jazz make appearances here. Billie Holiday makes two appearances with "Speak Low" and "Yesterdays," as does Sarah Vaughan with "Peter Gunn" and "Fever." Nina Simone, Anita O'Day, Shirley Horn, and Astrud Gilberto also make appearances, along with jazz legends Hugh Masekela and Jimmy Smith. "Speak Easy" The RPM Records Story Volume 2 1954-57 CD1

The second installment of Ace's new-millennial telling of The RPM Records Story picks up the narrative in 1953, the place where its predecessor No More Doggin' concluded. Like No More Doggin', Speak Easy mixes up original 45s with alternate takes and rarities, many of which were excavated by reissue producer Tony Rounce for this 2014 reissue…...This approach occasionally misses the original versions of some major songs -- there's a newly found alternate of B.B. King's "Sweet Little Angel," for instance (the original "You Upset Me Baby" is here, though) -- which may be a mild frustration for some listeners but this is a boon for archivists and devotees, with 33 of the 54 songs never showing up on a previous Ace collection (a whopping 15 cuts bear 2014 copyrights, marking their first-ever appearances). This reliance on rarities doesn't dilute the overall impact of the collection, which makes a strong case for RPM being one of the liveliest and wildest of the Bihari Brothers' Modern Records subsidiaries during the '50s. Much of the first disc bears the greasy imprint of Ike Turner, who was the Brothers' A&R man and house musician, and once this down-and-dirty R&B starts to lose its hold -- not even the best efforts of Johnny "Guitar" Watson could stem the shifting tides -- up comes B.B. King, who retains that same raw vitality but has a smoother touch. This means the second disc is largely devoted to the fallout, containing some straight-up rock & roll and jumping harmony groups, along with teen-beat groups and a wild rarity by Paul Anka called "Blau-Wile-Deveest-Fontaine." The variety makes this disc a bit of a blast, but for R&B and blues fans the real legacy of RPM lies on that first disc, which feels like it could've been packaged with No More Doggin' with no problem whatsoever.(Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic)

Eddie Angel With The Hi-Risers "Eddie Angel Meets the Beatles" 2005

For those of you who are unfamilair with the great guitarist Mr. Eddie Angel he is a member of both Los Straitjackets and The Neanderthals and for my money he is one of the most accomplished rock axemen of all-time. His interpretation of the music The Beatles might be playing today of their early 1960's signature sound is nothing short of spectacular and this recording is simply a joy to listen to from beginning to end. One of the best recording I have ever owned, just buy it and sit back with your headphones on, close your eyes and you will swear you are in The Cavern Club circa 2008. Eddie Angel Meets the Beatles is a covers album, but it's actually songs from the Beatles' set list in their early club days -- that is, tunes that were actually covered by the young group itself. For fans of Angel, this also marks a significant event in that the renowned instrumentalist actually takes lead vocals throughout the album, conjuring up the raw, rathskeller-throated style of Hamburg-era John Lennon. (With the exception of a vocal turn on the 2002 album Dressed in Black: A Tribute to Johnny Cash, Angel usually lets his guitar do the singing.) This is an album that shimmies, shakes, rocks, rolls, even swoons (into loungy '50s-style balladry). Most significantly, Angel is a ringer on guitar. Back in the day, George Harrison was able to pull off Carl Perkins and Chuck Berry riffs, but Angel, now in his fifties, has evolved to the point where he's practically transcended guitar influences like Link Wray, Chuck Berry, and the Ventures' Nokie Edwards. He's also more than ably backed by Rochester, NY, rock & roll revivalists the Hi-Risers (who offered up a stunning mix of garage, surf, Bobby Fuller Four-isms and Bakersfield twang on their 2003 album Lost Weekend). With relatively lo-fi, analogue-sounding production and dead-perfect feel and musicianship, this album captures the raw, youthful excitement of the early Fab Four. You might even forget you're not listening to the Liverpudlians themselves -- that is, until something like the cover of Chuck Berry's "Almost Grown" rears up, and Angel fires off some trademark guitar bursts in his fiery, nimble style and rich, bubbly tone. Despite his surf, rockabilly, and instro roots, Angel has always owed a debt of influence to the popsmithery of the Beatles, particularly on some of the more lovely instrumentals he's written for los Straitjackets -- consider that debt paid off with Eddie Angel Meets the Beatles. ~ Erik HagePersonnel:

Susan & The SurfTones "Fluid Drive" 2006

Instrumentals, retro yet modern, rooted in surf and 1960's garage.It's been a while (seems like too long), but here it is. The new CD from Susan and the SurfTones continues to display the band's development, and particularly, Susan's every more liquidy guitar. Lot's of very cool whammy here. About half covers, with some tracks recorded live at KFJC. The new CD from Susan and the SurfTones is a digital download only release distributing CD Baby. The CD asks about the link between the Myddle Class and the Velvet Underground. The one I know about is an early live encounter. Late in 1965, the Myddle Class were booked to play at Summit High School. The other band on the bill was an unknown NY outfit called the Velvet Underground. Fresh off being dumped from Cafe What for being undanceable, VU delivered the cacophony they would be later loved for to an unsuspecting audience, half of which left before the Myddle Class came on. - Phil Dirt

The Contours "Just A Little Misunderstanding" Rare & Unissued Motown 1965-1968

The Contours are one of the greatest second-tier Motown acts: a dynamic, versatile soul group characterized as a one- or two-shot wonder, best known for "Do You Love Me" and, in some quarters, the rampaging "First I Look at the Purse.".....Ace Records has done its fair share of restoring and adding luster to the group's reputation, releasing Dance with the Contours, a 2011 collection of unreleased tracks recorded between 1963 and 1964 that was so successful it spawned this 2014 sequel. Rounding up rare and unissued tracks recorded between 1965-1968 -- including no less than 11 solo sides by Dennis Edwards -- Just a Little Misunderstanding trumps its predecessor largely due to its diversity. Where the cuts on Dance with the Contours followed the early-'60s Motown playbook pretty precisely, there's a greater variety of sounds here: hard-driving dance in the vein of "First I Look at the Purse," plenty of richly orchestrated uptown soul, and songs that sound pitched halfway between the Temptations and the Four Tops. Some of these different sounds are due to the group's ever-shifting lineup. The group's first lead singer, Billy Gordon, left in 1965, Jerry Green took the lead on occasion, and toward the end of their run, Motown put in Dennis Edwards -- a signee who had specialized in supper club soul -- at the front of the group. Edwards continued to cut solo sides in 1967, after he added overdubs to "Baby Hit and Run," which became a U.K. hit posthumously in 1974, and those are collected here; they're all enjoyable, particularly the songs that aren't covers. While it's generally true that the music here simply couldn't compete with what was released -- and, apart from four cuts, every one of the 26 tracks was dug out of the vaults in the new millennium, with most of them debuting here -- they're nevertheless all potent and joyous, proof that among the second-tier Motown groups, the Contours were one of the best, no matter who was singing with them.(Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic)

Susan & The SurfTones "The Originals" 2005

This is a compilation of Susan and the Surftones' original tunes, mostly from earlier releases, but several appear here for the first time on CD. Susan Yasinski is among the few female guitarists in the instrumental rock world. Her writing is strong, and her playing is too. Good melodies, excellent arranging, and a tight band. If you aren't familiar with this band, this is a great place to start. Solid surf and rock instrumentals played well with power. This was originally destined for release in Europe, like Susan's earlier work. Label problems brought Susan to issue it domestically, and that's a good thing. - Phil DirtSusan & the Surftones' sixth album, The Originals, serves up more original surf rock. Like Dick Dale, the Surftones flawlessly evoke the Southern California beach and cruising culture of the early '60s. Instrumentals like the sax-centered "Barbados Twist" and the surly, mid-tempo "Tabu" sound right out of the era and would make perfect inclusions on the soundtrack of any surf-craze flick. "Spaghetti Beach" has a beautiful, seedy Los Angeles vibe and "Space Spider" is sci-fi spy music worthy of early Man or Astro-Man?. But, unlike Man or Astro-Man?, the Surftones always feel out of another time; it's nostalgic without being sappy for sure, but lacks the contemporary touches and unique appeal of a band like the Sadies. - Review by Charles Spanotrax:
