American musician, music producer and a longtime Rambler (automobile) enthusiast, born in Collingswood, New Jersey…
The "Ben Vaughn Combo" released two albums and toured the US from 1983 to 1988. Vaughn then had a solo career, 1988-1994, recording four albums and touring Europe and the United States. As a musician, he is perhaps best known for his "Rambler '65" album that was recorded entirely in his car. As a producer, Vaughn made albums for artists such as Charlie Feathers and Los Straitjackets. He also collaborated with Alan Vega and Alex Chilton.
Now living in California, Vaughn works in film and television. Notable for his work on That '70s Show, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Black Mask and Psycho Beach Party.

Deadbolt's third CD emphasizes the scary over humor. It tells a more complete story than their previous records and the songs are probably their most memorable. Still, I miss the laughs on "Shrunken Head" and "Tiki Man." - Billy K

The short-lived Viva Records label was one wildly eclectic outfit. Helmed by hitmaker Snuff Garrett, this Los Angeles-based imprint targeted the teen marketplace with a series of extraordinary garage / psych / pop singles...
...The label’s command of popular styles prevailed across these Top 40 hopefuls, ranging from the stomping beat of the Shindogs to the psych-fuzz nirvana of the Sound Sandwich. Kimberley Rew "Great Central Revisited" 2002

Kimberley Rew is one of those performers who seems to have little interest in being a frontman, but he's a great guy to have on your team, as anyone who's heard his sterling guitar work and superb pop songwriting with the Soft Boys and Katrina & the Waves can attest…
...Great Central Revisited is only Rew's third solo album since 1982, but what he lacks in quantity he more than compensates for with quality on this set. The album features a baker's dozen of tunes that for the most part concern life in England in a manner that sounds like two parts Ray Davies, one part Nick Lowe, and a dash of Spike Milligan for flavor as he recalls opening for Screaming Lord Sutch, the quality of British roadways, Eddie Cochran's final tour, dating a beautiful female bass player, and poet and jazz critic Philip Larkin. If Rew's sense of humor lacks the lysergic surrealism of his frequent collaborator Robyn Hitchcock (who plays guitar on one track), he's better at conveying a narrative, and "Philip Larkin," "Sick of Hearing About Your Drugs," and "Purple and Orange Stripes" make it clear that not all of the Soft Boys' quirks were Hitchcock's doing. And Rew's sparkling melodies, rich with hooks, are the perfect vehicle for his deft guitar work, which manages to sound both playful and technically precise at the same time. Great Central Revisited is a top-shelf set of mature but bright-eyed British pop that proves Rew ought to step up to center stage -- he's got the talent and the charm to carry the show quite well by his lonesome. - AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

Named for Duane Eddy's 1959 hit "Forty Miles of Bad Road", this six-piece combo from Lake Charles, LA, deep in the heart of Cajun country featured Buz Clark on vocals, lead guitarist Terry Green, rhythm guitarist Briant Smith, Mike Hicks on bass, Kenny Cooley on tambourine and drummer Danny Kimball...
...The Bad Roads' first single "Blue Girl," a razor sharp one-up of the Rolling Stones, along with its eerie flipside "Too Bad" are so authentically 1966 you can almost smell the soggy coats being checked by kids at the cloakroom of the National Guard Armory, where a hand-lettered "Teen Dance Tonight: $1.00" sign appears above the front door.

The Mojo Men "Not Too Old To Start Cryin'" - The Lost 1966 Masters" 2008

For a minor mid-'60s San Francisco garage/folk-rock/psych group with very limited national success, the Mojo Men certainly recorded a hell of a lot of material...
...This compilation contains no less than two dozen previously unreleased 1966 recordings, cut in the uneasy period between when their original label, Autumn, had bit the dust, and they had yet to release tracks with their next company, Reprise. It's no less than the fourth CD of material from the group that's been issued, with no duplication between the discs. For that reason, even some enthusiastic '60s/San Francisco collectors might wonder whether it's only of peripheral, completist-only interest. It's definitely not, however; a little surprisingly, it has much of the best stuff they ever did, with only a few of the songs that would be re-recorded at Reprise. Far more than their earlier, more garage/British Invasion-inclined recordings prior to the entrance of drummer/singer Jan Errico into the lineup, it has a folk-rock/slightly psychedelic feel somewhat akin to the pre-Grace Slick work of Jefferson Airplane. Too, it's nonetheless less precious and slick than their more polished (if occasionally fine), baroque rock-influenced Reprise material. Bittersweet, wistful folk-rock with mild garage and psychedelic tinges (and more than a touch of the Beau Brummels) is the main vibe on this strong set of mostly original material, highlighted by the ones on which Errico's stirring, yearning vocals -- the best qualities she brought into the band from her former outfit, the Vejtables -- are prominent. While some of the tunes are rather run of the mill, the best of them are really good, including the Beau Brummels-style "Is Our Love Gone"; "Not Too Old to Start Cryin'," represented by two versions (and later redone for Reprise); and, above all, "You Didn't Even Say Goodbye," where Errico's singing is a match for Signe Anderson at her best. Even the oddball cover arrangements of "She Cried" (formerly a hit for Jay & the Americans) and the late-'50s Bell Notes rocker "I've Had It" are cool. You could even make an argument for this as the best Mojo Men CD, despite the absence of their only two songs to make appreciable national noise, "Dance with Me" and "Sit Down, I Think I Love You." - Review by Richie Unterberger

Kimberley Rew "Tunnel Into Summer" 2000

Hit songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire KIMBERLEY REW, a major force in pop/rock music for over 20 years, makes his solo recording debut with "Tunnel Into Summer" -- a CD that delivers more than its share of the catchy hooks and guitar wizardry that have become his trademarks...
...In addition to being a showcase for Rew, "Tunnel Into Summer" features guest appearances throughout most of the CD from ROBYN HITCHCOCK, GLENN TILBROOK, JULIAN DAWSON, DAVE MATTACKS, and ANDY METCALFE, who also produced half of the album's cuts.
Rew began establishing a reputation playing with various groups in England in the early '70s. He first came to prominence, however, in The Soft Boys, which also featured Hitchcock. The critically-acclaimed group released a number of LPs and singles, most for the Armageddon label, before the members went their separate ways in the early '80s.
Without missing a beat Rew became the guitarist/songwriter for the new group Katrina and the Waves. The group's high point came in 1985 when Rew's song "Walking On Sunshine" became a smash hit in the U.S. and around the world. As the group's popularity waned in the early '90s, Rew found himself contributing more to projects as a sideman, adding his master guitarwork to solo projects by Robyn Hitchcock, Julian Dawson, and others.
Along the way, he also penned the hit "Going Down To Liverpool," for the Bangles, which appeared on their "All Over The Place" (1984) album, as well as their "Greatest Hits" CD (1990). - from: http://www.gadflyrecords.com/

...Mundell Lowe’s compositions aptly complement and enhance the story’s mood and atmosphere while often juxtaposing humor with strains of profound symbolism. The score, a stellar example of “jazz noir” however, is never decaffeinated. It’s relentlessly vibrant and engaging. Deadbolt "Tiki Man" 1994

Here's Deadbolt's second CD, Tiki Man, which I believe is their best (Tijuana Hit Squad is a very close second). - Billy K
"I don't know if you can get the full effect of Deadbolt without seeing them live. I've seen them many times (My home town at the time was usually their first tour stop from San Diego) and I've hung out with them a few times (more on that later). Their live show consists of more fog than you can possibly imagine.
Harley Davidson (his real birth name, by the way) has an ongoing schtick where he sprays his pompadour about a hundred times throughout the show. His guitar is set up somehow with an iron bar on it, so that at the highlight of the show he brings out a power saw and "plays" guitar with it, spraying a torrent of sparks into the crowd.
At one point (I think right after Tiki Man came out) they toured with two bass players - "The Wall of Thunder," they called it. Les Vegas (the drummer) later started a ritual where he would leave his drum kit, the band would leave the stage and he played some gypsy music (I think it was) on a handheld tape recorder and danced practically naked with rubber snakes and dolls. Some nights he would do this many, many times. Les left the band after Tijuana Hit Squad. I heard he moved to Las Vegas (of course) and became seriously mentally ill and the band couldn't even locate him.
My band opened for Deadbolt once. We were at the gig early and there was plenty of time with no audience. If these guys are just "playing parts," I can guarantee you they never stepped out of character. I tend to believe their stage personalities are who they really are. I dated a girl once who had visited them at their home, and she reported their house was full of bullet holes.
My favorite Harley story was after a show I was hanging out at a fellow musician's house and the band showed up. Harley had an oxygen mask, which was not hooked up to anything, but the tube led to his back pocket. He would reach for the mask and breathe deeply every now and then, recreating Dennis Hopper's character from Blue Velvet. Early in the evening, Harley decided he didn't much like me, and spent most of the night trying to scare the hell out of me. I don't know if he was just having fun or for real, but I did worry a bit that if I hadn't been amongst friends, Deadbolt might've tied me up and thrown me in the back of their van....

Ben Vaughn "Designs in Music" 2006

While rock fans know Ben Vaughn from the handful of witty but rockin' albums he cut in the '80s and '90s with his band the Ben Vaughn Combo, since the mid-'90s Vaughn has been making his bread and butter working as a composer for film and television, hitting pay dirt with his music for the shows Third Rock from the Sun, Grounded for Life and That 70s Show…
...For his first album since 1997, Vaughn has taken his inspiration from his current day job by composing and conducting 12 pieces for movies that exist only in his head. Recorded with a 16-piece studio band (complete with horns, strings, and a whistler), Designs in Music is a collection of instrumentals that harkens back to the era when film scores had personality and added atmosphere to a film rather than simply adding more rumble to the Dolby Surround mix. Vaughn appears to be having some fun with this stuff, and the shadows of such sonic eccentrics as Esquivel and Joe Meek can be heard throughout the album, but Designs in Music doesn't sound at all like a goof; there's far too much skill on display for this to be a joke, and Vaughn and his collaborators certainly do right by their influences; the spy flick ambiance of "The Stalker Pt. II," the western pastiche on "Smoketree Serenade," the European intrigue of "The Big Parade," and the uber-cheery "Avanti" wouldn't sound out of place in any number of late-show epics from the '60s, while the arrangements (by Vaughn and Ryan "Shmedly" Maynes) are superbly inventive (facing the rattley twang of the bass end of a clavinet against a banjo shouldn't work, but somehow they make it happen). Designs in Music is smart and engaging fun that honors pop music history while making just a little of its own. - AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

The Mojo Men "There Goes My Mind" 2003

Way out sounds from San Francisco’s Mojo Men!..
...There Goes My Mind finds the Mojo Men in full control of their high-wire blend of boy-girl vocals. Abetted principally by sparkling keyboard wizardry, winsome vocals, and lavish guitars, this is your ticket to one of West Coast’s best psychedelic garage bands.
Considering all the wonderfully buoyant material they tracked for Warner Brothers in the ‘60s, it’s puzzling the label never pulled the trigger on an album by San Francisco’s Mojo Men. They’d had regional, British Invasion-style hits for Tom Donahue’s visionary Autumn Records in 1965-66, and even cracked the national top 40 for Warner/Reprise in 1967 with “Sit Down, I Think I Love You,” a lavish, Van Dyke Parks-embellished production that the song’s composer, Buffalo Springfield’s Steve Stills, apparently preferred to his own band’s version.
The Mojo Men featured the robust vocals of Jim Alaimo, Paul Curcio’s solid guitar work and the sparkling keyboard wizardry of Don Metchick, trained at Rochester, NY’s Eastman School Of Music. And, best of all, they had the beautiful Jan Errico who could play drums as well as any guy in town and possessed a singing voice that would stop people dead in their tracks. Yet, no LP sprang from these San Fran stalwarts!
The most ironic card in this rainbow-hued deck, however, is the album’s title song, “When You’re Down.” Had they sloshed on some psychedelic guitar–a la John Cipollina or Jorma Kaukonen–this opus alone might have gained them entry to any West Coast hippie love palace. But that really wasn’t what the band was after. To paraphrase the most sagacious Roger McGuinn, things turned out just fine for the Mojo Men. - Jud Cost
