Starday Records had seen 4star custom pressing service work, after Slim willet “Don’t Let The Stars” had become a hit. Realising the vast potential for new publishing material, new stars, royal-ties from airplay, and more income for the business.
From the Starday Story by Nathan D. Gibson with Don Pierce
“According to the original promotional letter from 1954, Pierce wrote, “When we receive your material it will be carefully reviewed, and if it is suitable for making records, we will agree to make 300 flex records on your own label . . . provided,
1. You give us the option to use the recordings on STARDAY LABEL on a royalty basis.
2. You give STARDAY RECORDS AN OPTION for your services as a recording artist.
3. We be given publishing rights on the songs recorded.”
“Several songs appeared on both the custom and main label series, though only a handful of artists eventually made the crossover including Jerry Hopkins,
Lucky Chapman, King Sterling, Hoyt Scoggins, Jimmy and Dorothy Blakley, Andy Doll, and Jimmy Simpson. Fees for the service were initially set at $115,
but by the mid’-sixties had risen to $150 per 300 records.”

Victoria was also a member of the ORIGINAL HARMONY RIDGE CREEKDIPPERS with her then husband Mark Olson (from the Jayhawks). The group was mainly a vehicle for him and his songs and Victoria mostly sang harmony and background vocals. She did have the occasional lead vocal. She also sometimes went under the pseudonym of MABEL ALLBRIGHT. The group and marriage broke up when Victoria divorced Olson for sleeping with one of his ex-girlfriends.

Today’s NDW upload was requested by Richie Nixan – it’s the 3 x 12’ Compilation “Massa” – the only ever vinyl release by the legendary german “Klar! 80” cassette label. Technically this compilation is ONE album but it consists of three Mini-LPs (with each about 20 minutes playtime) - so before I cause any trouble concerning the twilight zone rules this is my only upload for today!
By the way and in case you didn’t know (and why should you unless you’re old enough and from Deutschland): The title of this compilation, “Massa”, alludes to the german supermarket chain from the 60s until the 90s with the same name! Here it is:

Did he make any? What a performer! Saw Freddie lots of times mid 70s early 80s. Used drop his glass eye in his pint whilst playing, neck the pint, wipe his eye then pop it back in. Absolute legend!
