Shock! The greatest movie for your mind on record! I was lucky enough to find this bootleg compilation to replace the LP stolen from me in 1976. That was a real keepsake - I'd sent for it from Captain Company, the mail-order house that had all the ads in the back pages of Famous Monsters.Shock - Terror In HiFi is the best of these three albums. A few tracks were left off the triple compilation, but no great loss. Shock is there in its entire glory. Panic and Nightmare are nice to hear, but don't really bear repeat listening, alas.
The engineering, the playing, the sense of airiness is supreme; the old-time radio effects work spectacularly. I love this disc. I think the mastering was done right off the vinyl - you can hear scratches and pops in Haunted House, for instance - but it's still sounding great to my ears.
Sax, piano and vibraharps never sounded more real to me till this album came into my life. Not to mention the phone ringing, the gasps and screams. Genius lever, Sincerely!

From the first wave of surf, this 1964 oddball remains one of the best examples of how surf music can work as Halloween party music. It needs help, of course, and that help came in the form of howls, screams, and evil voices saying any number of strange things. Originally released on Vee Jay Records (you remember, the little indie that was the only label in America with the intelligence to put out the first Beatles record) it has been dusted off and released on CD by Collectables, and it sounds maaaahvelous. The voices are infinitely clearer as they moan such things as "there's a creature in the surfer's lagoon," "hey, got a match?," "Igor, quit tormenting the sharks and get back on your surfboard!" or "oh please!!! Make it stop!!" Hey, guy, I feel your pain, but the CD keeps playing. It may be the simplest of 60s surf, but it's decorated for Halloween and I'm in the mood. - Reviewed by DJ Johnson

I was lucky enough to find a used copy of this CD; it would have been a bargain at three times the price! From beginning to end it combines influences of rock, R&B and straight blues, and never ever disappoints. To this day I am very disappointed that the band broke up. Thanks to a great idea by Dell Richardson of Fury Records, The Rapiers' early recordings are now available on CD. The first LP 'Straight To The Point' (Off Beat Records, 1985) has long been deleated and the master tapes lost, but thanks to dilligent storage by Mike Westergaard, who engineered the album, the original multitracks have come to light and have been remixed. Whilst sorting through the tapes in the studio, I was delighted to come across some early unreleased recordings. Three of these, "Make It up", "So What" and "It's Gonna Take Magic" are included on this CD. Also included is the original frantic version of "It's Been Nice" thought at the time to be far too fast for the LP - listen out for Roger's comment at the end! Another voice that can be heard on the count into "So What" is that of drummer Keith Newton, whom I was very proud to have as a member of The Rapiers for a short time. Very sadly, Keith died suddenly in December 1989. and we lost a very good friend and a great musician. As well as the first LP and the three unreleased numbers we have also added seven tracks from our EP collection which are now featured in Record Collector's Rare Records Price Guide. Over the years there have been several changes On a personal note I would sincerely like to thank Roger Cover, Bob Burgos, Dave Lawes, Terry Earl, Keith Newton, John Tuck, Brad Dallaston and Neil Ainsby for their loyalty, commitment and dedication to the music we all love. "The current line-up of The Rapiers is Colin Pryce-Jones, lead guitarist, vocalist and founder member of the group, Dave Lawes, rhythm guitarist and vocalist who has been with Colin from the outset, Bradley Dallaston, bass guitarist and John Tuck, drummer. As for their music, The Rapiers champion Beat, Rock and Instrumentals from the pre-Merseybeat era, when those particular genres had reached their collective zenith. As Colin says, "Over the years we've tried to put together an act which is based on memories of the Fentones, the Shadows and early sixties bands like the Gladiators and Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, rather than stylising purely on the Shadows. Led by singer Colin Pryce-Jones, the group performed in numerous venues in England before recording its 1983 debut EP effort, Vol. I, on Red Door Records. Three more EPs followed from 1984 to 1986, with its first vinyl full-length being Straight to the Point in 1985 on Ace Records. Known for being a great live act, magazines such as The Face and New Musical Express reported on the group. In 1987, the Rapiers released its second album 1961 on Ace Records. Throughout this time though, the group became a supporting group for several British musicians, including Cliff Richard, Billy J. Kramer, and Freddie Garrity. In 1991, the quartet released The Return of the Rapiers on Fury Records. In 1994, Back to the Point was released to much praise. Guitarist Neil Ansby and bass player Brad Dallaston left the Rapiers, replaced by guitarist Wayne Nicholls and bass player Nathan John Hulse. The band released You'll Never Walk Alone With in 2000 and more touring ensured, including supporting Mike Berry. A greatest-hits compilation was released in 2002. Spotlight on the Rapiers was released on Fury Records. The group plans to star as the Shadows in a touring British production titled Cliff the Musical.
