Joe Satriani "Surfing With the Alien" 1987

Surfing with the Alien belongs to its era like Are You Experienced? belongs to its own -- perhaps it doesn't transcend its time the way the Jimi Hendrix Experience's 1967 debut does, but Joe Satriani's 1987 breakthrough can be seen as the gold standard for guitar playing of the mid- to late '80s, an album that captures everything that was good about the glory days of shred…...Certainly, Satriani was unique among his peers in that his playing was so fluid that his technical skills never seemed like showboating -- something that was somewhat true of his 1986 debut, Not of This Earth, but on Surfing with the Alien he married this dexterity to a true sense of melodic songcraft, a gift that helped him be that rare thing: a guitar virtuoso who ordinary listeners enjoyed. Nowhere is this more true than on "Always with Me, Always with You," a genuine ballad -- not beefed up with muscular power chords but rather sighing gently with its melody -- but this knack was also evident on the ZZ Top homage "Satch Boogie" and the title track itself, both of which turned into rock radio hits. This melodic facility, plus his fondness for a good old-fashioned three-chord rock, separated Satriani from his shredding peers in 1987, many of whom were quite literally his students. But he was no throwback: he equaled his former students Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett in sweep picking and fretboard acrobatics and he had a sparkling, spacy quality to some of his songs -- particularly the closing stretch of the Middle Eastern-flavored "Lords of Karma," the twinkling "Midnight," and "Echo" -- that was thoroughly modern for 1987. The production of Surfing with the Alien is also thoroughly of its year -- stiff drumbeats, sparkling productions -- so much so that it can seem a bit like a relic from another era, but it's fine that it doesn't transcend its time: it captures the best of its era and is still impressive in that regard.

Chris Knox & The Nothing "A warm Gun" 2008

At the 2001 New Zealand Music Awards Knox's ballad "Not Given Lightly" (1990) was announced as New Zealand's thirteenth best song of all time, as voted by APRA members. A love song written for "John and Liesha's mother"—his then-partner Barbara—this track never scaled commercial heights though it has belatedly generated some income for the songwriter through its use in TV advertising (notably for Vogel's bread)……Knox has played live in front of audiences all around New Zealand, winning a reputation for his sometimes confrontational style, and performed annually at Wellington's Bar Bodega. He has also extensively toured internationally. His swing through the US in 1995 included, among others, stops in Seattle to play the Crocodile Cafe. His minimalist, DIY sound played well to ears then-focused on grunge, with its retro-punk stylings. A long-time resident of Auckland, Knox spent time as a newspaper columnist and film reviewer for Real Groove. In 1986-1987, he edited and published three issues of a New Zealand comics anthology Jesus on a Stick. Starting in 1987, his satirical comic strip Max Media appeared in The New Zealand Herald every week until 2009. He has also been an occasional television film reviewer, hosted a Television New Zealand season of classic movies, and presented two seasons of arts series New Artland. Knox launched his own label 'A Major Records' in 2006 to release the album Chris Knox and the Nothing. This was the first album Knox recorded in a professional studio, rather than in his trademark DIY style, since his time with Toy Love. Knox's "It's Love", from the 2000 album Beat, has been used in "Share the Good", a Heineken Premium Light commercial directed by Todd Haynes and cinematographed by Edward Lachman. In 2009 Knox was awarded a New Zealand Arts Foundation Arts Laureate Award. On 11 June 2009 Knox was admitted to Auckland hospital suffering from a stroke. The album Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox was released in New Zealand on 16 November 2009. It features 33 artists performing Knox's songs. The album is a way for Knox's fans to contribute to the costs of his rehabilitation. All artists contributed their time and talent without charge. Artists include Jay Reatard, David Kilgour, The Mint Chicks, Shayne Carter, Yo La Tengo, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Bill Callahan, The Mountain Goats, The Bats, The Chills, The Verlaines, Jeff Mangum, The Nothing (including Chris), Tall Dwarfs and Lou Barlow. The Greenwich Village arts venue Le Poisson Rouge hosted a benefit concert for Knox on 6 May 2010. Artists included Jeff Mangum and Yo La Tengo, who both participated in the 2009 benefit album for Knox.
Since his stroke, Knox has done a very small number of live appearances, for instance at the presentation of Stroke – Songs For Chris Knox in November 2009, on 22 April 2012, on 29 September 2012 in Auckland, with Rackets, as Knoxious and in support of Neutral Milk Hotel on 23 and 24 of November, 2013. - wikitrax:

Jetpack "Surfin' to No Doubt" 2005

This cd may be a No Doubt cover project, but man-it is some of the hardest hitting, wall of reverb surf I have heard from a modern band in quite a while…...I had Jetpack's "Planet Reverb" and expected the same more or less. Much heavier than Jetpack's other cd, this one has fast picking like Dick Dale at his best and drum breaks all in just the opening track. There are some slow numbers too, like the ND hit, "Just a Girl" done as a slow dance piece like Johnny and Santo's, "Sleepwalk". There's a Byrds inspired piece rocked out on what must be a Rickenbacker 12 string and fuzz bass here and there. I have not heard fuzz bass on a recording for a long time. If you think real surf rock is Jan & Dean or the Beach Boys you have it confused with surf ballads. This is the real stuff: hard hitting, reverb drenched, and ruled by the guitar. This is so good, Jetpack makes the fact that these are ND songs almost incidental! I only know half of these songs from the radio, but love this album for what it is by itself. - By Lance (Southern California)trax:

Chris Knox (born 2 September 1952) is a New Zealand rock and roll musician, cartoonist and movie reviewer who emerged during the punk rock era with his bands The Enemy and Toy Love…...After Toy Love disbanded in the early 1980s, he formed the group Tall Dwarfs with guitarist Alec Bathgate. The Tall Dwarfs were noted for their unpolished sound and intense live shows. His 4-track machine was used to record most of the early Flying Nun singles. Roy Loney & The Phantom Movers "Phantom Tracks" 1980

Acclaimed second album of gutsy, rockabilly-fueled, no-frills rock & roll from 1980. Contains six bonus tracks of previously unreleased, live, and out-take recordings.Founding member, original lead singer, and heart and soul of the legendary Flamin' Groovies, Roy Loney quit the Groovies after the Bay Area group waxed their greatest song, 'Teenage Head,' in 1971. He emerged again in 1979 with Roy Loney & the Phantom Movers, a new lineup that included ex-Groovies Danny Mihm on drums and James Ferrell on guitar. Beginning with their auspicious debut, 'Out After Dark,' Loney and the Movers picked up right where the hard-driving 'Teenage Head' left off -- with gutsy, rockabilly-fueled, no-frills rock & roll. 'Out After Dark' became highly acclaimed, the first of five albums Loney released over the next five years for San Francisco-based Solid Smoke Records and its two subsidiaries, War Bride and Double Dare. Loney's output in this era arguably represents the finest performances of a long, productive career, which continues to this day. - cdbabytrax:

Jetpack "Planet Reverb" 2000

This is a great instrumental album. Surf music is quickly gaining a rabid following and Jetpack's debut CD is a great example why. Perfect for road trips with the windows down and the volume cranked. Each track is worthy of multiple listenings, although my favorites are Pedro and Lunik2. There's also a great rendition of Sound of Silence. If you liked the soundtrack to Pulp Fiction, or just surf music in general, you'll love Planet Reverb. The L.A. guitarist known as Jetpack has put out a debut CD that can truely be called EPIC. PLANET REVERB ranges from So.Cal. surf to a Texas barn-burner to an ode to the Soviet space program and beyond. The range of styles, (classical guitar, screaming solos, fretless bass a la Jaco) is extrordinary. Sound messy? No way! What makes this so enjoyable for a surf album is the apparent braininess behind it. The songs have varing time signatures and tempos without falling into the "look-how-clever-this-is" catagory. A favorite example: The Russian LUNIK 2 has the Volga River folk tune incorperated into it with what sounds like an army chorus (or exploited workers) singing and marching. The same song has theremin and Dr. Zivagoesque balalakas and mission control speech-and it really rocks, too! Just when it looks like the CD may go too far out there, Jetpack gives us simpler, solid tunes like the lovely MYSTERY PROM. I can swear I see the mirror ball from the live Jetpack show when I listen to it! Wrapping up the whole deal is a wicked version of SOUND OF SILENCE, which starts out like PIPELINE, morphs into DICK DALE style picking, and end with island rhythms. Funny and full of drama...oh yeah, AND IT ROCKS! BUY IT! - amazontrax:

The Iguanas "Reptiles Lust And Dogs" 1987

Garage Rock band from Topeka, Kansas, USA, 1980s.The voice is more bullfrog than lizard, like Iggy or Buster in deep blooze mode only more generic, fraternal twin to the single-minded guitar drones that keep this Topeka trio raving. Both emanate from one Alan Wilson, who succumbs to the style's bad clichés on "Hot Rod" (to h--l) and defeats them only on "Coffee O.D.," recommended to morning jocks everywhere. - Robert Christgautrax:

"That's Swift!" Instrumentals From The Norman Petty Vault

Ace Records is well known as the home of the Fireballs, the rocking instrumental combo that legendary producer Norman Petty shepherded to the top of the charts in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their unprecedented success inspired a generation of instrumental combos, several of whom decided to follow in the Fireballs footsteps and beat a path to Petty's door.Norman Petty is best known for recording Buddy Holly; serious rock fans are also aware that he oversaw the popular instrumental recordings by the Fireballs in the late 1950s and '60s. Even serious fans, however, are largely unaware of just how much material Petty recorded in the '60s, especially as he ran one of the most prominent recording facilities in the southwestern United States. That's Swift: Instrumentals from the Norman Petty Vaults has a couple of dozen tracks cut in 1961-1967, most of them taken from rare singles from groups that never made a significant national commercial impact, and a few of them (including the Fireballs' sole contribution, "Torquette") previously unissued anywhere. Those familiar with the Fireballs' output know, to some degree, what to expect here: brisk, cleanly executed guitar instrumentals, often with a Tex-Mex flavor. That's true to some degree of much of this material, but actually it's more interesting than much of the Fireballs' stuff that has circulated, both because of the variety of groups included and the somewhat more modern styles on display. There's a definite surf-influenced bite'n'twang to some of the better tracks, like the King Pins' "Door Banger," the Chandelles' "El Gato" (whose picking is so agile that it would not be at all out of place on a top-tier general '60s surf instrumental compilation), and the Impact V's "Riptide." Those happen to be the first three tracks on the CD, which can't quite keep the same momentum going through the whole disc. Still, it's a pretty listenable, cool comp, and Petty's willingness to change with the times to some degree is evident in selections like Wes Dakus' Rebels "Sour Biscuits," with its unusual wobbly guitar effects; the Chances' "Black Grass" which, as its title indicates, has a definite rootsy country influence; the almost folky exotica of the Chances' "Camelback," and Wes Dakus' Rebels' almost folk-rock-ish "Bach's Back!," a 1966 release that's one of the latest recordings on this anthology. As Petty-recorded '60s instrumental comps go, this is considerably above the average, and worthy of attention from serious '60s instrumental rock fans in general. - by Richie Unterberger

The Raunch Hands "¡¡Fiesta!!" Live At The K.G.B." 1990

Like with the Gories, Crypt didn’t put out the first two Raunch Hands 12-inches. (As a weird side note, those Raunch Hands records came out on Relativity, making them the only Crypt band to be labelmates with the likes of Tangerine Dream, Megadeth, Steve Vai, and Eazy E.)  Despite that, the Raunch Hands would come to embody the spirit of the label...…It is hard to describe the Raunch Hands to somebody who has only heard “garage rock” like Ty Seagall or releases on Burger Records. Kind of like trying to explain to somebody what pre-Giuliani Times Square was like. The Raunch Hands were Noo Yawk and punk when that meant Johnny Thunders and decaying porno theaters, not Green Day Broadway musicals. Raunch Hands records don’t sound particularly “garagey”, their records were actually well-produced, and there is actual musicianship involved. With a drummer that played with G.G. Allin, the Raunch Hands had all the punk cred you could ask for.  They also had a sax player… - Rocket 808trax:

- http://loscoronas.com/elextranoviaje/trax:

K 4 "Immunity" 1985

The garage band 'K 4' only made it to one cassette, the quality is correspondingly poor this time too, despite revision...Musically K4 started to evolve quite quickly from the early sound of post punk to experimenting in electronic atmospheric darkness. Formed during 1983 the band originally consisted of Hugh Thomson (Drums) and Peter Denniston (Bass). Stephen Bolton (Guitar) and Ray Albon (vocals) and Helen Goudge. K4 played right through the end of 1983 to their last gig around 1985. - Gaiustrax:

George Barnes Octet "The Complete Standard Transcriptions 1946-1951" 2006 - CD 2

George Barnes may not be as well-remembered as Les Paul or Chet Atkins, but he was an influence on both and a master on par with the best jazz and country guitarists…...The Complete Standard Transcriptions is a two-disc set that resurrects nearly 50 1946-1951 recordings of Barnes and his octet performing unique jazz-pop guitar instrumentals that bear little similarity to anyone else. The tight and inventive arrangements revolve around the interplay between Barnes' jazz/pop guitar leads and the octet's woodwinds, resulting in a delightfully different and surprising instrumental blend that sounds like the swingingest chamber music ever made. It's a minor miracle that such an extensive showcase of Barnes' talents exists and, as such, The Complete Standard Transcriptions is recommended not only for those who appreciate guitar wizardry and the Country All Stars scene of which Barnes was a part, but for all lovers of good music.

_ http://loscoronas.com/adios-sancho-el-nuevo-album/trax:

"Hidden Gems" Vol. 6 Aladdin (1950-1956)

Great collection of hard to find ALADDIN sides from 1950-1956Aladdin Records is a legendary record label. For the five years 1948-1952, it was the most successful R&B label in the United States. Its catalog includes numerous classics from Charles Brown, Floyd Dixon, The Five Keys, Thurston Harris, Wynonie Harris, Billie Holiday, Lightnin' Hopkins, Lonnie Johnson, Louis Jordan, Amos Milburn, Johnny Moore's Three Blazers, Shirley & Lee, Lester Young, and many others. The label was founded in summer 1945 under the name Philo Recordings by the Mesner brothers, but in early 1946, the owners were forced to change the name because of the similarity to radio manufacturer Philco. The previous singles (Philo 101-128) were reissued on Aladdin with the same catalog numbers.

The Amazing One Man Band & His Little Trashy Orchestra "Hell Blues" 2008 - EP

As dirty as the greasy gunk that accumulates between the coils of steel on a guitar player's stings,.....as fiery and sulfurous as demon's breath, as jacked up as a backwoods meth fiend, and as bizarre as an old-time carnival freak show, the music of Amazing One Man Band comes to us from a remote section of South America's Uruguay. - James G. Los Coronas "El Baile Final de los Locos y los Cuerdos" 2009 + Los Coronas & The Hi-Risers "Hartzatu Koktela Hanekin... / Have a Cocktail with…" 2009

Los Coronas & The Hi-Risers "Hartzatu Koktela Hanekin... / Have a Cocktail with…" 2009La fiesta continúa y a ella se suman los neoyorkinos The Hi-Risers.

Surfin' Tenochtitlan is a best of release with many gems to get you into this fine band.
