Original, classic instrumental surf and roots rock!“Sunset Cliffs” and “Hey, Hot Dog!” are originals in the true California instrumental surf style. “Arima J’ouvert” and “Ukrainian Bell Carol” are instrumentals that blend Trinidad steel drums with surf guitar. This blending of California beach music and the sounds of the Caribbean is unique to The Swamp Coolers. “Escape From El Diablo”, “110 On The 101” and “Sonora Sunrise” are re-mastered from The Swamp Coolers’ first CD, Dry Heat. Don't know who these guys are or where they come from; but from the desert-baked sound of 2005's Dry Heat, one suspects they might have tried to surf a sand dune or two in their day. That in itself might not be the brightest move, but you can't fault their tasty playing, nor the sense of whimsy and creativity they bring to arrangements of "Hawaii 5-0," "Ms. Moto" (yes, you read that right) and even "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music as well as whammy-licious originals like "Escape From El Diablo" and "101 on the 101."

CALVIN BOZE & HIS ALL-STARS Feat. Maxwell Davis "Havin’ A Ball" (Moonshine 113 LP)

Trumpeter and vocalist Calvin Boze cut over 30 sides for Aladdin between 1949 and 1952. His singing voice bore a remarkable similarity to that of Louis Jordan and much of the material he recorded was also very similar to that recorded by Jordan in the mid to late 1940s. So the sides presented in this late 1980s album on the Moonshine label are lively and raucous jump blues steeped in a party atmosphere usually very similar to Jordan’s major hit “Saturday Night Fish Fry”. There’s plenty of booting tenor sax solos courtesy of Maxwell Davis.

There will never be too much reggae for me. The joy of a completed torrent. Eternal gratitude to the unknown original ripper and uploader, who did a magnificent job, including full scans. A must have for Lee Perry collectors!Before Bunny Ruggs became the lead vocalist for Third World, he cut an albums worth of material for Lee Perry. Issued in 1974 in minute quantities under the name Bunny Scott, French label Tabou 1 oversaw this excellent reissue a few years ago. The CD includes his 1969 hit version of Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline as well as covers of Diamond’s I Am I Said, Bobby Womack’s Harry Hippy – as Hip Harry – and William Devaughan’s Be Thankful (For What You Got) here in extended discomix style, as well as Big May; Ruggs’ vocal piece to The Upsetter’s classic skinhead reggae Return Of Django. Scott / Ruggs is a superb vocalist, he still makes regular appearances on 45 up to now.

Da Surfones "The Girl Who Couldn't Hula" 2004

Just the sound I was looking for… surf that stays true to the surf philosophy with a great sound... love the Mermen and this reminds me of the direction they move in...Wow! Again, I went by a few 30 second clips to decide whether or not to buy this album, and Boy, am I glad I got it! It's Modern Surf melded with Trad Surf in such a perfect way that I can't even decide which song is my favorite! It starts out a little strangely with a (purposely) analog, scratchy, LP sounding Hawaiian song called ... well ... "Intro!" But from there it goes into pure surf rock. I'll let you decide, but I think #5, Platja Nudista, is my current favorite (RYP's current fave is #9 Superspeia Juan which has a cool played alto saxophone). It had me dancing in my chair, which is something I rarely do these days! But they are all excellent, both new and nostalgic at the same time. Great guitar harmonies, occassional wah wah, the whole shebang. I don't yet know who Da Surftones are, but I guarantee that I'm going to be finding out as much as I can about these guys!

Ha! And just wait till you hear the chicken pickin' on "Fried Chicken Can't Run!" What a hoot!

Music was paramount in New Orleans, a town where they liked jazz with their blues. Regular blues musicians like Richard ‘Rabbit’ Brown got on disc when the record companies came to town. In general bluesmen and women came from out of town for their sessions, Texans like Lillian Glinn, Will Day, Oscar Woods and Blind Willie Johnson or Mississippians Bo Carter, the Mississippi Sheiks and Walter Jacobs, or out-of-towners like Little Brother Montgomery. New Orleans also saw the first recordings by fascinating Cajun musicians like Amédé Ardoin, Dewey Segura, Lawrence Walker and Cléoma Falcon, who put down their version of 12-bar blues.

New Orleans became a blues town in the late 1940s, when the likes of Roy Brown, Smiley Lewis, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Lloyd Price, Guitar Slim, T-Bone Walker, Little Richard and Ray Charles made their way to Cosimo Matassa’s tiny studio to lay down a series of classic songs that defined rhythm & blues. The city had the best backing musicians, too, who took wild, jazz-inflected solos while laying down rhythm tracks that managed to be both loose and tight. Bluesmen like Papa Lightfoot, Boogie Bill Webb, Roosevelt Sykes and Elmore James kept their music righteous, along with Jesse Allen, Earl King, Pee Wee Crayton, Eddie Lang and Sammy Myers.Memorable songs collected here include ‘Good Rockin’ Tonight’, ‘The Fat Man’, ‘Stack-A-Lee’, ‘The Things That I Used To Do’, ‘Let The Good Times Roll’, ‘Directly From My Heart’, ‘Mardi Gras In New Orleans’, ‘Dust My Blues’, ‘I Wonder Who’ and the original ‘See You Later Alligator’. CECIL GANT "Cecil Gant" 1945-1947 (Krazy Kat)

Pianist Cecil Gant seemingly materialized out of the wartime mist to create one of the most enduring blues ballads of the 1940s. Gant was past age 30 when he burst onto the scene in a most unusual way -- he popped up in military uniform at a Los Angeles war-bonds rally sponsored by the Treasury Department. Private Gant proceeded to electrify the assembled multitude with his piano prowess, leading to his imminent 1944 debut on Oakland's Gilt-Edge Records: the mellow pop-slanted ballad "I Wonder," which topped the R&B charts despite a wartime shellac shortage that hit tiny independent companies like Gilt-Edge particularly hard. Its flip, the considerably more animated "Cecil's Boogie," was a hit in its own right.

Pvt. Gant shot to the upper reaches of the R&B charts for Gilt-Edge like a guided missile with his "Grass Is Getting Greener Every Day" and "I'm Tired" in 1945, recording prolifically for the imprint before switching over to the Bullet label for the 1948 smash "Another Day -- Another Dollar" and 1949's "I'm a Good Man but a Poor Man" (in between those two, Gant also hit with "Special Delivery" for Four Star). Urbane after-hours blues, refined ballads, torrid boogies -- Gant ran the gamut during a tumultuous few years in the record business (he also turned up on King, Imperial, Dot, and Swing Time/Down Beat), but it didn't last. His "We're Gonna Rock" for Decca in 1950 (as Gunter Lee Carr) presaged the rise of rock & roll later in the decade, but Gant wouldn't be around to view its ascendancy; the one-time "G.I. Mostly major label stuff, e.g. Decca, Capitol, Brunswick, Imperial, Columbia etc., and I was reminded of many a repro. The majority of the content spans the period 1955 to 1959, a few previous, and some interlopers from 1960. But it's all not less than GOOD, with many a standout cut. If you were a fan and buying in the mid-70s, likely you'll have many of the tracks, but if it's all new to you, you're in for a treat. I wallowed in nostalgia! You can argue the toss if it's rockabilly or rock & roll, with a few country boppers thrown in, but to repeat, it's all GOOD. (Tony Martin, Rockabilly Monthly)

10-CD box set that contains 200 original Rockabilly recordings.I was familiar with the bulk of the content, having sold most of them in period. Mostly major label stuff, e.g. Decca, Capitol, Brunswick, Imperial, Columbia etc., and I was reminded of many a repro. The majority of the content spans the period 1955 to 1959, a few previous, and some interlopers from 1960. But it's all not less than GOOD, with many a standout cut. If you were a fan and buying in the mid-70s, likely you'll have many of the tracks, but if it's all new to you, you're in for a treat. I wallowed in nostalgia! You can argue the toss if it's rockabilly or rock & roll, with a few country boppers thrown in, but to repeat, it's all GOOD. (Tony Martin, Rockabilly Monthly)
