The Grip Weeds "Summer Of A Thousand Years" 2001

No one will ever accuse the Grip Weeds of being the most innovative or forward-thinking band of the 1990s and 2000s. Their music is unapologetically retro-1960s and, even though Summer of a Thousand Years was recorded in 2001, it sounds like it could have been recorded in 1967…
...This CD sounds dated, but dated isn't necessarily a bad thing -- at least not if you hold the music of a particular era in high regard. And if you worship all things 1960s, Summer of a Thousand Years is dated in the best, most positive sense of the word. The Grip Weeds offer no acknowledgment of 2001's alternative rock scene; their turf is the psychedelic pop/rock and jangly guitar pop of the 1960s, and they excel by sticking with the type of music that they obviously cherish the most. Retro gems like "Moving Circle," "She Surrounds Me," and "Love That Never Ends" aren't the least bit groundbreaking, but they're certainly rewarding and heartfelt -- if you've spent hours and hours savoring the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Yardbirds, and Revolver-era Beatles, it is impossible not to fall in love with Summer of a Thousand Years. The melodies are enriching, and lead singer Kurt Reil knows how to make the lyrics come alive. Although original material dominates the CD, Summer of a Thousand Years also contains an inspired remake of the Who's "Melancholia" (which finds lead guitarist Kristin Pinell singing lead, although Reil handles 90 percent of the album's lead vocals). Summer of a Thousand Years isn't for those who think that all rock releases have to be innovative (an unrealistic and foolish expectation), but it offers considerable rewards to lovers of 1960s rock. - AllMusic Review by Alex Henderson

Melodic instrumental rockular music with furious and atmospheric visual vibes. Handcrafted locally in Finland for universal audiences! Constantly influencing the instrumental evolution.
Laika & The Cosmonauts was founded in 1987 by Mikko Lankinen (guitar), Janne Haavisto (drums), Matti Pitsinki (organ and guitar) and Tom Nyman (bass). The Finnish instrumentalists' first album, C'mon Do The Laika, was released in 1988. Since then, the band has released five more studio albums, all with the same line-up.
But the band's popularity really took off after their music was introduced into the US, where they became legendary among the surf / garage / punk / alternative set for their otherworldly instrumental albums and mesmerizing live shows. In the states, Laika & The Cosmonauts have released three original CDs - Instruments of Terror, The Amazing Colossal Band and Absurdistan - as well as a compilation of their early material from C'mon do the Laika and Surfs You Right!
These critically acclaimed releases brought Laika a good amount of radio airplay and won the admiration of music fans and musicians alike, including none other than "king of surf guitar" Dick Dale. "Laika & The Cosmonauts Play Varttina" 1990 - 7"/45rpm
Laika & the Cosmonauts were a Finnish rock band. They had the same lineup from the time they formed in 1987 until they stopped recording in 2008. Their sound is usually described as surf rock, but a Boston Globe review noted that the band's sound is "far beyond the limitations of any specific genre." They have toured the United States and Europe several times. They rely heavily on the Finnish rautalanka tradition. Although relatively unknown in the United States, their music is admired by many musicians, including Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Mike Palm of Agent Orange (band), and Surf Rock legend Dick Dale. The Shivas "Turn Me On" 2017

...In the early 2010s, K Records founder Calvin Johnson caught on to the Shivas' sound and released their third album, Whiteout!, on the label in 2013...
...Burger Records offered up a cassette version of the album. Johnson worked with the Shivas again for their 2014 release You Know What to Do, recording the record direct to tape in his Dub Narcotic recording studio. Johnson returned to the studio with the Shivas to produce Better Off Dead, released in February 2016; by this time, the group was a trio after Rob Mannering left the lineup, and Ian Hartley contributed guest vocals and percussion during the sessions. Burger issued a cassette-only album for the band in 2017 called Turn Me On, and in late 2019 the Shivas released the more fully realized and introspective Dark Thoughts on the Tender Loving Empire label. When tour plans around the album were upended by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Shivas found themselves spending more uninterrupted time in their hometown of Portland, and became more involved with their local communities than had been possible during years of touring. Three of the four Shivas began working with a Portland non-profit organization that worked with unhoused residents of the city, and their involvement in issues of social justice grew. Huevos Rancheros "Dig In!" 1994

Huevos Rancheros' sophomore release doesn't really add too many ingredients to the Calgarian combo's instrumental cauldron, but what did you expect?..
...Bryan Adams on lead vocals? It's another tightly-wound, slightly smart-alecky set of surf-inspired twang, topped with a heavy dollop of Pixies-worthy indie rock power (check the bassline to "64 Slices of American Cheeze"). HR doesn't really need a vocalist, anyway. There's plenty of storyline in the lead guitar of "Where's the Bathroom? [In Spanish]," "Gump Worsley's Lament," and "Girl from N.A.N.A.I.M.O.," and the rhythm section fills in the margins with glee. Fans of derivations on a theme won't necessarily dig on Dig In. But who needs them anyway? It's a fun, freewheeling, instrumental rock record, that sizzles like it did in the genre's heyday, while winking with knowing indie rock charm. Calexico "Live at White Stage, Roskilde Festival" 2000

Fittingly named after a town on the border of California and Mexico, Calexico fuse the dusty sounds of the American Southwest with spaghetti western soundtracks, cool jazz, and a broad spectrum of Latin influences...
...Early on, the group delivered this mix of musical approaches and cultural perspectives with theatrical flair, as on 1998's The Black Light. Gradually, their style became more nuanced, with 2003's Feast of Wire and 2006's Garden Ruin venturing into more straightforward songwriting and 2010's Algiers folding New Orleans traditions into their music seamlessly. Calexico's knack for capturing the sound and feel of a place continued to shine on albums as distinct as 2015's Mexico City dispatch The Edge of the Sun and 2022's El Mirador, a heartfelt tribute to the sounds and people that make up the band's roots. - by Mark Deming

Giant Sand "Blurry Blue Mountain" 2010

Howe Gelb has a remarkable ability to sound like a master of his craft at the same time that he resembles a backporch picker who is paying as much attention to his iced tea as his music; Gelb can seem focused and casual at once, and he shows off this talent to its best advantage of Giant Sand's 2010 album Blurry Blue Mountain...
...Twenty-five years after releasing Giant Sand's first album, Gelb doesn't pull any new tricks out of his sleeves here, but given the many stylistic detours of Giant Sand's history, he can cover plenty of ground while still investigating his established sound, and Gelb and his latest band of collaborators are in truly fine fettle. Blurry Blue Mountain sounds both loose and tight; while nothing seems overworked, Gelb and his musicians (particularly Peter Dombernowsky on drums and Thoget T. Lund on bass) mesh precisely and put these songs on their feet with confidence and casual grace, from the loping seven-minute meditation of "Monk's Mountain" and the late-night barroom lament of "Chunk of Coal" to the chaotic, guitar-shot rock of "Thin Line Man," the stark, late-night philosophizing of "No Tellin'" and the punchy but high-strutting blues of "Brand New Swamp Thing." Blurry Blue Mountain is an album full of heart, soul, and wit, and this music confirms that no one does quite what Howe Gelb can do with such remarkably innate grace and feel; Gelb's songs find pretty remarkable things in the odd details of simple lives, and there some very real magic to be found in the elegant force of Blurry Blue Mountain. - Review by Mark Deming

Bo Diddley "Surfin' With Bo Diddley" 1963

This is where Bo -- or, more properly, Chess Records -- really took a wrong step, starting with the fact that The Originator himself is actually on only about half of the cuts here, the balance having been recorded by guitarist Billy Lee Riley...
...The idea wasn't as bad as it sounded, at least on paper -- Bo had been an indirect influence on tons of surf bands, with his signature grunge guitar-sound, but the surf music world wasn't ready for a Bo-style instrumental rendition of the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II Showboat standard "Ol' Man River," and Bo's own inspiration behind songs like "Surfer's Love Call" was muted, to say the least. Almost as bad -- although more entertaining -- is "Low Tide," Bo's rewrite of Bill Justis' "Raunchy." The best tracks are "Cookie Headed Diddley" and "Surf, Sink or Swim," which come close to matching some of Bo's solid material from earlier albums and singles. - Review by Bruce Eder

Howe Gelb "Sno Angel Like You + Sno Angel Winging It" 2016

Starting with Guy Garvey’s Meltdown at Southbank Center London, Howe Gelb presents and further explores his piano efforts, hitting Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester with special guest Erika Wennerstrom of Heartless Bastards, Larmer Tree Festival and Bristol’s Americana Festival, SummerTyne Festival Sage Gateshead and A Coruna (Spain)...
...The piano songs, also anticipated within the latest Giant Sand farewell tour and their selected shows during the upcoming festival season, are finding an always clearer shape as “future standards” but actually have always been a central element in Howe Gelb’s creativity, whose entire, massive, catalogue is available via Fire Records, including the Little Sand Boxset and the Giant Sand “Sun Set” Box Sets.
Howe Gelb’s solo touring also points towards Fire Records 10th Anniversary deluxe reissue of the highly acclaimed “Sno Angel like You”, due in September, as 3CD ‘Bookback’/ Double Gatefold LP, featuring ‘Sno Angel Winging It’ live at Reading Town Hall from 2006.
Clocking up a decade since its initial release ‘Sno Angel Like You’ will be reissued this September celebrating its ten year anniversary.
Collaborating with Canadian Gospel Choir, Voice Of Praises following a performance at 2003’s Ottawa Bluesfest where Howe was billed alongside gospel choirs. Howe experienced his own awakening of sorts and found himself discussing with the church director the possibility of recording together.
A similar run of events ensued at the same festival and Howe would go on to meet folk singer Susan Odle. Recruiting along the way, Jim Bryson’s keyboard player and recording engineer Dave Draves was soon on board and would go on to record the album. Once in the studio, Howe met drummer Jeremy Gara (pre-Arcade Fire) and together they laid down the initial recordings of the album on guitar and drums using similar recording techniques to older Giant Sand.
Recording seven new songs with the choir arranging vocals, they also covered three Giant Sand songs and three Rainer Ptacek tracks. The uplifting and soulful popular tenth solo record sees “the occasionally unassuming, semi-mumble of Gelb’s voice contrast marvellously with the trained, primed-for-transcendence-quality singing of Voices of Praise.” (Tiny Mix Tapes)

Malphino "Visit Malphino" 2018

Malphino are an outer-national, mystical band from an imaginary tropical island that has dreamt up a cinematic score and audio backdrop to their idyll. A promised land of hypnotic cumbia rhythms, subtle digital warbling, accordion textures, voodoo vapours and woodblock charm awaits the off piste explorer willing to step through the arch and Visit Malphino, the debut album from this London based collective of musicians and visual artists.
The joyous, often frenetic, style of cumbia that Malphino have landed on, tips its hat to the various denominations of modern cumbia movements worldwide yet carves its own unique, transcendental spin on the genre. Reinterpreting the traditional Colombian banda, playing organ, accordion and tuba, their sound integrates an array of percussion and rhythms from either side of the Pacific ocean with a strong emphasis on East-Asian folkloric traditions alongside the distinctive origins of Brazilian forró, 1930’s Cuban rumba, Peruvian chicha and cumbia in a myriad of styles.This heady mix of volcanic sounds is given extra potency by a fluid use of electronic sequencing, with reverb and echo effects laced into the melodic lines and vocals to recreate the dreamlike rapture of their magical island.

The Grip Weeds "The Sound Is In You" 1998

On their debut album, the Grip Weeds proved to be a powerhouse pop-psyche band extraordinaire who write insanely gripping melodic nuggets, and they multiply that gift on their follow-up…
...Making musical analogies is an overused descriptive technique, but it also happens to be the only way to initially approach The Sound Is in You. You can hear many of the band's influences in the music: glorious, beautifully, ominous Byrds harmonies here, the aggressive crunch of early Who there (the ultra-melodic "Every Minute"). In addition to those timeless and true echoes, the album contains a much-publicized similarity to the Smithereens -- which is only logical considering Kurt Reil also fronts the Buzzed Megs, the side band of Smithereens guitarist Jim Babjak and drummer Dennis Diken -- although the Grip Weeds replace angst with a swirl of psychedelia. Bits of peer bands such as Olivia Tremor Control and Sloan also pop up on occasion, but those are all superficial comparisons because, ultimately, there is a certain depth and something uniquely yearning inherent in the Grip Weeds' music that sets it apart from any power pop that has come before or after. With a relentless instrumental attack propelled by Kurt Reil's explosive drumming and Kristin Pinell's psyche guitar stylings, the album is a thrilling listen from beginning to end. Written entirely be the Reil brothers -- with the exception of a cover of the Neil Young song "Down to the Wire," from his Buffalo Springfield days, sung by Pinell -- both individually and together, each song on the album is a certified winner. Only occasionally can the band be slightly overpowered by their influences. It is impossible to listen to "Strange Bird" without thinking it would have nestled perfectly somewhere on Mr. Tambourine Man. Still, it is a fabulous song, a spot-on-tribute, and is further evidence of the band's abundant musical and songwriting abilities. The flat duo jets were the best live band of the 90's maybe of all times. these two guys fit like a puzzle. they have paved the way for the white stripes, the black keys, the kills the soledad brothers, etc. but listening to them on record doesnt do them justice. even though they had amazing class, grace, and knowledge when it came to recording. everyone has forgeton there genius. i feel it is a dirty shame when bands like the white stripes (who has discretly mention them even though all his old friends say he was obsessed) and the black keys can be that successful but the flat duo jets were pushed aside. The Shivas "Better Off Dead" 2016 + "I've Had Enough" 2016 - 7"/45rpm

Languid and lazily blissful, like a lo-fi Brian Wilson on a heavy dose of pain killers, the Shivas sound a little less retro but no less poppy on their third proper album, 2016's Better Off Dead, which is significantly more cheerful (and a bit more lively) than the title might lead you to expect...
...Produced by Calvin Johnson (who also worked with the Shivas on 2014's You Know What to Do), Better Off Dead is a few steps up on the ladder of fidelity from the band's early home-brewed four-track releases, but the aesthetic drift is very much the same. The recording and production approach is aggressively simple, and the unforced, ambling spirit of the instrumental work and the vocals all feel casually rehearsed, making this album play as much like a loose jam session as a proper album. But like the saying goes, not all who wander are lost, and if the Shivas sometimes seem to be sauntering through their own album, their canny pop melodies indicate they have a reliable road map on hand. The reverb-soaked six-string work and frequent peals of slide guitar lend this music a potent psychedelic ambience that meshes beautifully with the simple but evocative tunes (and are a suitable match for the just-woke-up vocal stylings). Some bands put a lot of effort into seeming casual, and that may well be the case with the Shivas, but Better Off Dead sounds more like the work of people who really are willing to follow where the songs take them, and these songs are strong and imaginative enough that the strategy works. If you're looking for accompaniment for an afternoon stroll or an excursion into space, this will suit either trip beautifully. - Dead Review by Mark Deming

...The Shivas were formed in 2006 by a very young Jared Molyneux on guitar and vocals, his brother Colby on drums, and friend Eric Shanafelt on bass. The trio worked on their sound for a while, leaning heavily on the influence of classic Pacific Northwestern garage and surf, and getting a touch of the region's punk aesthetic in their mix as well. Eventually the lineup would shift somewhat to include second guitarist Rob Mannering and new drummer/vocalist Kristin Leonard. The bandmembers, some of them still teenagers, ventured into a prolific touring and recording schedule, playing gigs across the country and working on new songs constantly. Their earliest tunes resulted in the 2008 album Where Have You Gone To?, which was followed two years later by Freezing to Death... - Biography by Fred Thomas

Huevos Rancheros "Endsville" 1993

Endsville introduces Huevos Rancheros' raucous surf/rockabilly/Link Wray-inspired guitar instrumentals with fifteen tracks of good old-fashioned rock & roll.
Huevos Rancheros formed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1990. Original members of the instrumental rock & roll-type group were bassist Graham Evans, guitarist Brent J. Cooper, and a drummer by the name of Rich E. Evans later deserted the lineup and bassist Tommy Kennedy stepped in to replace him. Over the next decade, Huevos Rancheros would record a long list of singles, music videos, and several albums. The band's music earned it not only a large and loyal fan following, but acknowledgments from both MuchMusic and the Juno Awards.
During the first struggling years of its existence, Huevos Rancheros recorded a six-song offering, Rocket to Nowhere, released on both cassette and vinyl. A heavy performing schedule in and around Calgary promoted the EP and began to build the group a sizeable fan base. In 1993, the debut full-length album, Endsville, was recorded under the C/Z label. Huevos Rancheros stepped up their presence in the music world at the same time, with both singles and videos, and exposure throughout Canada and into Europe, Asia, the United States, and other countries.
In 1995, an impressive sophomore album, Dig in Mint, was released on Mint Records. The group's singles received heavy airplay on radio stations, while their music videos earned as much attention on both MuchMusic in Canada and MTV in the United States. A year later, Evans left and was replaced by Kennedy, just before a third album, Get Outta Dodge, was finished. The group's work on that album won them a Best Independent Video award from MuchMusic, and a Juno nomination for Best Alternative Album. Within a couple more years, the band's popularity spread into new countries, like Switzerland and Italy.
