"TEENAGE HEAVEN" The Fifties Girl Group Phenomenon

Teenage Heaven is a unique large-scale musical survey of the girl group explosion of 1958, comprising the best, most historically significant and rarest selections from the vanguard of the genre.This compilation focuses on the early days of the girl group explosion, confining its track list to a short period in which the Bobbettes reigned supreme and the Ronettes had yet to form. Unlike similar collections, Teenage Heaven draws its track list from a limited number of artists, taking multiple songs from each group as opposed to cherry-picking hits from a wide range of musicians. Several of the inclusions are rare, most notably the Deltairs' "A Schoolgirl in Love" and the Threeteens' ode to an Army-bound Elvis, "Dear 522-10761." The accompanying liner notes strive to draw a link between girl groups and early punk bands -- not an impossible task, although certainly a difficult one given the space limitations -- but there is something raw about this music, which appeared at the dawn of rock & roll and played an integral role in the shaping of that genre. Kicking off with two or three unusual tracks from each of the better known girls such as The Shirelles, Chantels, Blossoms and Bobbettes, this intelligently-compiled collection of some of the early girl groups drops us into a delightful netherworld of real rarities. Though the Poni-Tails represent the safe, white end of the market, the rarer tracks are drawn from the small label R&B market and, as such, are often rawer and more passionate in delivery. The Three Teens’ Doo Waddie, Down The Aisle Of Love from The Quin-Tones, The Sharmeers’ A Schoolgirl In Love and The Antwinettes’ Johnny O are all strong recordings, while The Baby Dolls’ handclappy includes a really strong young lead who bursts in with a real passion.

Some inclusions are very poppy, others femme doo woppers, but all are of great interest – if not always of the best sound quality. That said, this set can be thoroughly recommended to girl group collectors, though original release details of the tracks would have been a welcome addition. (Record Collector)

Captain Beyond "Sufficiently Breathless" 1973

Hi Everyone, ok it's not exactly pure rock 'n' roll, but the diversity of this disc makes it interesting. I discovered Captain Beyond recently, via the Soul Jazz Records compilation "Delta Swamp Rock"(highly recommended!) , and had the chance to find this vinyl at reasonable price. Enjoy That vinyl rip!!! - MKMCaptain Beyond's second album must have confused the diehards. Where their self-titled debut had upheld the basic progressive heavy rock blueprint of lengthy instrumental explorations, constant tempo changes, and opaque, yet cinematic lyrics, Sufficiently Breathless downplays them for a subtler, song-oriented production. The predominant mood is snappy and businesslike; no track runs over five and a half minutes. This newfound conciseness certainly benefited such heavy-rocking efforts as "Distant Sun," even as the band stuck to their diverse guns on the moody, acoustic title track and the sleek Latin funk rock of "Bright Blue Eyes" and "Everything's a Circle." The results were intelligent and self-assured, yet the band's never-ending bad luck again intervened when vocalist Rod Evans quit in late 1973, leaving the album adrift. The band would proffer a markedly different style on their return four years later, but anyone dismissing progressive heavy rock as an oxymoron should definitely check out this album first Review by Ralph Heibutzki(allmusic.com)

PROFESSOR LONGHAIR "Fess" The Professor Longhair Anthology

The rhumba-rocking rhythms of Roy "Professor Longhair" Byrd live on throughout Rhino's 40-track retrospective of the New Orleans icon's amazing legacy. Most of the seminal stuff arrives early on: "Bald Head," the rollicking ode cut for Mercury in 1950, is followed by a raft of classics from his 1949 and 1953 Atlantic dates ("Tipitina," "Ball the Wall," "Who's Been Fooling You"), the storming 1957 "No Buts, No Maybes," and "Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand" for Ebb, and his beloved "Go to the Mardi Gras" as waxed for Ron in 1959. The second disc is material from the Professor's '70s comeback, all of it wonderful in its own way. (Bill Dahl, Allmusic)Crescent City singer Ernie K-Doe — Number One in 1961 with "Mother-in-Law" — once said, "I'm not sure, but I'm almost positive, that all music came from New Orleans." He's probably right. And all of that music — blues, traditional jazz, R&B and early rock & roll — came together best in the robust hands of Henry Roeland Byrd, a.k.a. Professor Longhair (1918-1980). The nickname was a club owner's idea — Byrd had unusually long hair for 1949 — and a perfect fit. Even in a city so rich in piano magicians, Longhair had few peers (Archibald, Tuts Washington) but many students, including Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint and Dr. John. And while Longhair had only one national hit ("Bald Head," a Top Five R&B single in 1950), he recorded prolifically to the end of his life. 'Fess is a perfect two-CD introduction to his genius, featuring defining performances of his trademark songs. Longhair's rare fusion of boogie-woogie, calypso and the rhythms of second-line parades and Mardi Gras Indian chants was already in place when he made the seminal 1949 and 1953 Atlantic recordings here (anthologized in full on 1972's New Orleans Piano). His signature blues "Tipitina" captured the lazy tempo of life in New Orleans' steaming humidity, while the volcanic tangle of funeral-march drums and Longhair's piano became the blueprint for later classics such as "Go to the Mardi Gras" and "Big Chief — Part 2." By the time of the galloping Seventies sessions on Disc Two, with bands of both old friends (Snooks Eaglin, Dr. John) and young bucks, Longhair's explosive originality was a tradition in itself, a fundamental strain of local R&B joy. "TWANG!" UK Guitar Instrumentals '58-'62

In rock 'n' roll's 'space age' period, the guitar instrumental was king. Inspired by legends like The Shadows, Hank Marvin and Duane Eddy. TWANG! celebrates this golden era with 60 remastered tracks by UK combos from 1958-1962 taken from the archive of the mighty PYE Records. Many appearing on CD for the first time.The Sequel label has long gone so this 60 tracker plus the followup Strung Out may be difficult to find. Whats here is the British take on American instrumental music which shows that the British could copy as well as the Americans. Taken from the Pye and Picadilly catalogues these are names which probably mean nothing in the States apart from Kenny Ball-who seems out of place on a collection called Twang-and the Dave Clark 5 who began around 1960 as an instrumental act. Here can be found 4 recordings by the Pete Chester Group who began as the Chesternuts which is where the pre Shadows Hank Marvin began, Rockin'Red Pice who started with the Ted Heath Band before winding up with Lord Rockingham's X1, a group from Bristol called the Eagles-who had the name before the more famous ones-, the Original Checkmates without Emile Ford who actually cut an album in their own right full of covers of American instrumentals and Cherry Wainer who was from South Africa and also from Lord Rockingham's X1 and the Flee Rekkers who were discovered by Joe Meek and charted with their version of Greensleeves for Meek's short lived Triumph label. If you are a fan of this type of music, this is a must-have item.

ALBERT KING "The Ultimate Collection"

Rhino's 1993 double-disc set The Ultimate Collection remains the greatest-of-all Albert King collection, gathering the best of his recordings. True, the collection is tilted toward his Stax recordings, somewhat shortchanging his '50s and early-'60s recordings, but it is also true that the late-'60s/early-'70s recordings are the cornerstone of King's legacy, the ones that showcase his stinging guitar at its blistering best. By acknowledging as much the set gains credibility, it doesn't lose it, and while an artist with a career as long as King's will certainly have some great cuts left off of a two-disc, 38-song collection, this truly does contain his very best work, particularly in regards to showcasing his influence as a guitarist. If you're looking for a succinct introduction, turn to Born Under a Bad Sign, one of the greatest blues albums and one that captures the full scope of his skills as well as this double-disc set, but if you want something a little more comprehensive, containing the great moments that aren't on that album, this is what to get. Hi Everyone, I definitely remember having been disappointed by this disc when I bought it, the blues band I use to like was gone.... however, it is their disc the most successful, so it's probably a good one ? The single, "Tuff Enuff" was featured in the films Gung Ho, Tough Guys, as was the follow-up single "Wrap It Up". It has also been played a number of times on the sitcom Married... with Children. THE STOMPIN' RIFF RAFFS "Horror Show" 2011

In the early sixties leather jacket rock 'n' roll was experiencing a hangover, a new species of primitives had yet to break their garage punk sounds to wider audiences... and yet there were still a number of guys clinging onto their trade and pushing rockabilly, albeit with a bit of 60's bomp. The STOMPIN' RIFF RAFFS, or simply "Stompin" as they are known in their native Japan, are an explosive homage to this frat party sound and their first outing Horror Show is case in point! It's a ripping mix of originals coupled with covers of early sixties rockers by the likes of THE JAGUARS, THE MONTEREYS, THE INSTRUMENTALS, THE STRINGBUSTERS and the legendary RON HAYDOCK. Buddy Miles "Them Changes" 1970

Hi Everyone, it is not me who says it but Steve Kurutz (allmusic.com), this is a great album. That being said, I would like to underline that the sound of the CD (063 693-2) is much more bright than that the one of my vinyl (SR 61280),and have some breath. It is why I propose you this, and hope you'll enjoy that vinyl rip!!! - Magic Kaic's MusicThis 1970 release by former Band of Gypsy's drummer Buddy Miles is, quite simply, one of the great lost treasures of soul inspired rock music. From the funky drive of the title track to Miles' plaintive singing on "I Still Love You, Anyway" and Greg Allman's "Dreams," the album is filled with the best qualities of both genres. Not only does Miles prove himself to be a great interpretor of songs, but with the title track and "Heart's Delight," he demonstrates his ability to write solid material on his own. Complimented by the Memphis Horns, Miles' songs soar and swing as hard as any Stax release, and his voice, underutilized when he played with the Electric Flag and Hendrix, combines the nuance of soul singing with the grit of rock. Paul Personne "Exclusif" (1983)

Enjoy that vinyl rip!!! - Magic Kaic's MusicDespite his anonymous pseudonym, French rock veteran Paul Personne is inarguably one of the most well-known and best-loved blues-rock musicians of his generation. Born Rene-Paul Roux in Argenteuil in 1949, he first fell in love with the music of Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour before his discovery of Johnny Hallyday and Eddy Mitchell inspired him to abandon the accordion for the guitar and drums. At age 17, he formed the short-lived L'Origine, one of several bands he would front over the subsequent decade, including the 15-piece La Folle Entreprise, Bracos Band, and Backstage, the latter of whom he recorded two albums with in the late '70s before the group disbanded. Adopting the name of Paul Personne, he released his self-titled debut solo album in 1982, which was followed by 1983's commercial peak, Exclusif, home to the hit singles "Comme un Etranger" and "Ça Va Rouler." Struggling to repeat its success, he took a back-seat role for the latter half of the decade until a well-received performance at the Quebec Festival reignited his creative streak. From then on, he remained a mainstay on the French blues-rock scene, receiving the Bus d'Acier in 1991, working with childhood heroes Mitchell on 1993's Rio Grande and Hallyday at a concert at the Parc des Princes, and releasing a string of critically acclaimed albums including Rêve Sidéral d'un Naïf Idéal, which saw him team up with an outside producer (Ian Taylor) for the first time in his career. Personne continued to be a prominent live presence throughout the 2000s, and in 2007 he garnered a hit album with singer/songwriter Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine on the collaborative effort Amicalement Blues. by Jon O'Brien (allmusic.com)

THE COBRA RECORDS STORY: Chicago Rock & Blues 1956-1958

If the 50 tracks on this double-CD box sound an awful lot like they could have come off of any of MCA's various Chess boxes -- but especially the Willie Dixon volume -- it's no accident. Cobra Records was an upstart Chicago-based label that existed for a little over three years at the end of the 1950s, founded by Eli Toscano and Willie Dixon as competition for Phil and Leonard Chess's Chess Records, where Dixon had worked -- and been regularly cheated of fees and royalties -- since the end of the 1940s. His answer was to leave the employ of the Chess brothers and go to work with Toscano, and the result was an almost "shadow" Chess label, jump-started by the likes of Otis Rush ("I Can't Quit You Baby"), Buddy Guy, and Magic Sam, and filled out with Sunnyland Slim, Shakey Horton, Betty Everett, and Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm. They're all here, along with lesser known performers such as Louis Myers & the Aces, the Clouds, and Little Willie Foster, and there's not one cut on this set that's less than a first-rate, pounding, driving piece of electric Chicago blues. The sound ranges from very good to excellent, the guitars and vocals right in your face and the annotation in the accompanying booklet extremely thorough, so you know exactly which bandmember is impressing you at any given moment -- and Dixon played in and led most of the bands represented, so most of what's here is, in effect, expressions of the Chess Records sound in everything but name. And amid the contemporary Chicago blues, the producers have even managed to find room for one smooth, stomping piece of rock & roll, the Clouds' "Rock and Roll Boogie," which almost sounds like a throwback to '40s-style jump blues. THE DAVE CLARK FIVE "The History Of The Dave Clark Five"

For a very brief time in 1964, it seemed that the biggest challenger to the Beatles' phenomenon was the Dave Clark Five. From the Tottenham area of London, the quintet had the fortune to knock "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the British charts with "Glad All Over," and were championed (for about 15 minutes) by the British press as the Beatles' most serious threat. They were the first British Invasion band to break in a big way in the States after the Beatles, though the Rolling Stones and others quickly supplanted the DC5 as the Fab Four's most serious rivals. the Dave Clark Five reached the Top 40 17 times between 1964 and 1967 with memorable hits like "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces," "Because," and a remake of Bobby Day's "Over and Over," as well as making more appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show than any other English act. the DC5 were distinguished from their British contemporaries by their larger-than-life production, Clark's loud stomping drum sound, and Mike Smith's leathery vocals. THE RECORDS "The Records / Shades In Bed" 1978 / 1979

The Records first U.K. LP Shades in Bed is a pure pop masterpiece featuring the near-perfect singles "Starry Eyes" and "Teenarama." The album was retitled The Records and released in a modified form in America. The first pressings came with a bonus 12" entitled High Heels, which featured a collection of four covers. [Originally released in 1979, Shades in Bed was issued on CD in 2002 with bonus tracks.] (Allmusic)OK where to start? This is the finest album to come out of the New Wave era. It is my favorite album of the 80's even though it was released in 1979 (I bought in the Autumn of '79 but associate The Records with New Wave of the 80's).
The lead guitarist is immaculate, his name was Huw Gower, he is left handed and could write guitar hooks in his sleep. His playing was pristine, unmatched by anyone of the era. The Songwriters John Wicks and Will Burch, 2 talented tunesmiths deserve kudos for assembling an incredibly consistant batch of songs for their first release.
The songs on this album (for me the US name "The Records") stick in my head to this day, most of you probably know "Starry Eyes", a great lyric, especially the part about the lawyers upstairs and the writ has hit the fan, great Byrds like guitars and acerbic John Lennon wit in the lyric. The other songs on the LP were more about teenage romance and such, but the music was and still is top drawer all the way, songs like "All Messed Up" "Up All Night", "Girl", "Affection Rejected", "Another Star" were all Killer material. I'm especially thrilled to see that this CD has the old 45 Covers that were included as an EP with the original album, the Kinks' "See My Friends", The Rolling Stones "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadows", Spirit's "1984" and Blue Ash's "Abracadabra". In addition the B Sides "Paint Her Face" (This tune is equal to ANYTHING on the album), "Held Up High" (which I think was an early version of "Another Star"). Plus the 12 inch singles: "Rock `N Roll Love Letter" (I believe was covered by the Rollers) and "Wives And Mothers Of Tomorrow". I was lucky enough to catch this band twice, the first time was the original Band with Huw Gower at the Bottom Line in NYC, they closed with "Paint Her Face" - I still have a recording of this show that my sister taped for me off the radio. This is a 5 Star Classic, a no-brainer purchase at twice the price!
March 13, 2008. A Post script: Just got the CD yesterday, for the Audiofiles among us the sound is terrific, it is detailed with clarity, power and sonic resonance not heard before with these songs. Excellent job on the mastering. Two songs worth mentioning that I didn't know about, 1) Starry Eyes is represented here in 2 versions, the 45 "Hot Version" that I'm familiar with on the US release and the British LP version which is a bit different, there is an "extra" guitar sound on it and it also has "stops" inserted into the song for emphasis. I like it, it's not better, not worse, but different. Also Rock n Roll Love letter is a different version and I believe the Mutt Lange version included here is the definitive version.
