Roger Corman finished a cheapie horror-flick once and still had a week’s rent left on the castle, so he turned it over to a kid assistant named Francis Ford Coppola and young Frank made his first feature, a nifty little fright flick called DIMENTIA 13. So much for the history lesson. The band of that name emerges from their low-budget lair (do castles have garages?) with 10 psycho-delic toons that aren’t nearly as stupid or cliched as their titles (“Roolz is a Rule”, “Psychedelic Mushroom Cloud Explosion”). Upon relocating to LA in the mid-'80s, Tolman's first solo recording, Totem Poles and Glory Holes(1986, Restless) had him dabbling in similar western motif terrain as his old band (not to be confused with country-or with the twang of No Depression). He followed with two more "California" albums in the confessional singer-songwriter vein, Down in Earthquake Town(Restless, 1987) and Goodbye Joe (Skyclad, 1988), before he retreated for a spell overseas. While living and touring throughout Europe, Tolman released Road Movie (1992, New Rose) and Sweet Spot(Brilliant 1994) and found an enthusiastic audience for his All-American sound among the Europeans long enamored of the romantic imagery of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Ultimately, Tolman returned to the San Francisco Bay Area for the recording and release of City Lights in 1997 (Blue Rose); New Quahdrophonic Highway followed three years later.

The latest slab from MESSER CHUPS... previously released on CD in 2015 now on vinyl, finally. 'Spooky Hook' contains 16 tracks that were remixed and remastered for this vinyl release. Combining elements from surf, '50s and '60s B-movie themes and reverb-drenched rockabilly, it's the group's finest delivery to date. Recorded at a sleazy biker bar in extremely high low fidelity just a couple months after they formed and a year before their first record was released, "Live At Spring Valley Inn, 1983" presents the original line-up of the Beat Farmers undergoing alcohol-marinated natal screams. The mastermind is guitar man Gitaracula. The others are Betty Page look a like bassist/singer Zombierella, drummer Eugene and a roaring saxophone player named Ir. Vendermulen. "The Incredible Crocotiger" is Electronica, Surf, Rockabilly, Retro 1950-60s Horror, Beach Party, Hawaii and little bit of Cramps meets the Ventures. Messer Chups emphasize lively instrumentals. These unknowns can play. Newcomers might want to seek out their risqué videos to grasp more of what they are all about. A DVD would sell like hotcakes. A fun pairing would be "The Incredible Crocotiger" followed by a Elvira movie. - Avalon Don

…Really, I much prefer the older stuff that was more experimental and full of weird samples, because all of that has pretty much disappeared with the last few albums, but since I love twangy surf music too, I have more-or-less come to accept that they aren't going back to the plunderphonics stuff. The bonus tracks on this are culled from the 3 albums prior to this one, and they are probably some of the better tracks from those, but I already have those CD's so they are not that big of a deal to me. The 14 tracks that comprise the actual "Church of Reverb" album seem much better to me than the last couple of albums, which are OK but you could tell the band was running out of directions to move in. There is actually a sax player on some of the tracks, which sounds good... there are keyboards too but those are uncredited. From just a couple listenings though, I'd say this one was a winner.

...Their first album started off extremely well pushing the limits for robots and humans alike but their second release "Spare Parts" took a step in a more electronic direction redoing many of the songs on "No Room For Humans" in a way perhaps more appealing to their own kind, but "Entertainment Program For Humans" is incredible. They combined the standard robot domination themes with amazingly catchy rhythms. Messer Chups are remarkably true to their surf and rockabilly roots. They've captured the sound of The Ventures, Dick Dale and the Deltones, The Challengers, The Pyramids, etc. with obvious care and affection. I very much enjoy some of the genre-benders! On this album, that would include the Twin Peaks Twist.

My review is about all the following sixties Prestige albums from Chet Baker: Boppin', Groovin', Comin' on, Smokin' and Cool Burnin'. The reason why I review them alltogether is because they form an unicum. The line up is the same in all the recordings, the period is the same (between 65 and 67) and the project by the way is the same. The idea to mimicking the titles of the Miles Davis albums from the same period (such as Relaxin', Workin', Steamin' etc) is clearly evident. But the music contained in these five albums is really great, certainly not a bad copy of Miles's music. Chet in this period played to me some of his best Jazz for sure. He was already a mature soloist, not the young talent which came out of nowhere that ruined himself in the fifties. I mean that these discs are very consistent and his playing more deep than how it was in the fifties Pacific recordings (even if they're great in their own right too). Here (luckily for me!!) you don't find the Chet Baker softer singer that so many girls like! Here you'll find Chet the musician, the Jazzcat, the cool white bopper and it's a delight! By the way here he was not too much ethereal like in some of his later recordings when he was too much destroyed by the heroin. Here he really is the best musician he has ever been. He choose here to play the fluegelhorn not the trumpet and in my opinion this has been a very good choice. His sound is simply phenomenal!! He plays here fluenty and boppish with a majestic sound, elegant and sweet. These albums are some of the best music from Chet absolutly. Chet is accompanied here by a very talented team, the Kirk Lightsey trio plus George Coleman as the second horn. And the overall sound the combo produce is splendid. The program is very interesting too, a lot of originals and standards, with ballads and swingers. I have bought these albums in one single shot and I'm really glad I did. The only complaint is the package. I don't like the paper covers. I prefer the magic boxes but unfortunatly they have been rereleased only in this shape. =(( Anyway, the music is splendid, splendid Jazz that I'd suggest to everyone, the Jazz connossoir and the newcomer. Believe me. Man, Chet's sound on fluegelhorn is fantastic... Buy them, you will be VERY happy. - Jazzcat
French... English... Esperanto... the world's true lingua franca is apparently surf music, as shown by this Russian Federation group's impressive instrumental chops. Hailing from St. Petersburg, their music is inspired by some tasty Baltic Sea waves. The brainchild of artist/musician Oleg Gitarkin, the band has previously collaged a variety of musical and spoken sources, including surf rock, soundtracks and film dialog. A few fragments of the latter remain, but this is primarily an instrumental surf music album stoked by spring reverb, tremolo and vibrato bends. There are a few vocals, sung and recited, dialog clips and sound effects, but its twangy guitars and pounding drums that keep things rolling. Gitarkin's fascination with horror films is evoked in the titles "Vincent Price Bible," "Bruce Lee vs. Christopher Lee," and, invoking both Herbie Hancock and 1950's 3-D, "Rock It, Creature from the Black Lagoon." The original "Twin Peaks Twist" brings the atmospheric creepshow to the dance floor where you'll already be working on your surfer's stomp. 3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. “Syd Barrett acolytes from Ohio! This tasty goblet of swirling, bubbling psych slips down a treat. The heavily acid etched instrumental ‘Lysergic Mental Vibrations’ is an excellent contrast to the more whimsical joys of the opening ‘We Are’ and the aquatic lunacy of ‘I Am A Whale.’ Over on side two, ‘Last In Line’ is a pretty flawless Chocolate Watchband respray job while ‘Colors’ employs backwards tape jiggery-pokery as an eerie voice creeps in and out of the mix having escaped from somewhere you probably don’t want to know about. ‘Psilocybin Spot’ fulfills the same role as side one’s ‘Lysergic…’ and is as effective. Finally, ‘The Lizard’ is an acoustic based trip into the mynd of the vocalist who is driven to bizarre flights of fantasy by a brief, and unexpected, FX bombardment. Sensibly, and probably to avoid the unwanted attentions of like minded space cadets, the band members remain anonymous and the murky photo on the sleeve adds to the mystery of this wickedly warped caboodle of crazed vignettes.” –Jon Storey

...The Russian duo of Oleg Gitarkin and err, Zombie Girl, return with another slab of twisted, sound-effect driven surf and garage rock guaranteed to turn heads as the soundtrack to your next retro Halloween party. There are scant credits so it's impossible to say if the many samples of what seem to be classic schlock horror movies are composed by the band or actually grabbed from old flicks. Regardless, the result will keep you entertained through all 18 cuts and 50 minutes. Five appropriately cheesy videos are also included, to be played on your computer. With the heavy Cramps meets the Ventures schtick, it would be easy for this to devolve into a repetitious cliché, and in fact tracks such as "Coffin Dolls" with its mournful cello behind fun house noises could have been left on the cutting room floor. But the band typically reigns in those tendencies. The tunes are short, tight and generally don't overstay their welcome, even if the album does start to lose steam in the homestretch. But before that it's a roller coaster ride of sonic lunacy featuring reverbed guitar careening around stripped down trashy surf rockers that only need Screamin' Jay Hawkins' voodoo vocals as icing. Covers of Henry Mancini's "Charade," "Music to Watch Girls By" (turned into "Music to Watch Zombie Girl By") and "Popcorn"(here titled "Popcorno"), none credited to their original writers, effectively bring Messer Chups' warped spin on these oldies. Occasional whistling also adds to the weirdness. Turn down the lights, lock the doors, push play and wander through the band's campy B-movie world. - AllMusic Review by Hal Horowitz

...Lawyer Dave plays a prominent role on Coulda Shoulda Woulda. His hopped-up preacher affectations on “Heaven Buy And Buy” are at the forefront, and he sells his role. A cynical tale of cynical religious charlatans, the pointed lyrics cut to the bone and pull not a punch. It’s a hard driving, guitar-driven track that is both prescient and terrifying. He also takes the lead on “Jump In The River,” a mournful tale sung sorrowfully (in his most delightful, gritty sort of voice) that is augmented by a churchly organ. The should-be dance craze “Karate” is another Lawyer Dave vocal, complete with instructions and a jittery guitar line. It’s utterly fun (“and resume your natural speed” scans better than you’d expect when it’s sung). The chorus, in particular, is a giddy delight.
...The core of the group seems to be multi-instrumentalist Oleg Gitarkin and harpist Maria Kapelova, but several guest musicians are credited as well. And whenever one member of a band plays the harp and more than one guest is listed as a Theremin player, you know you're in for some weird stuff. Messer Chups' music is a creepy, bubbling stew of surf guitar, sadomasochistic sexual imagery, 1950s sci-fi movie soundtracks, and goofy Satanism. Half of what makes this album fun is the gloriously awful Pidgin English of the song titles: "Gangster They Called Horizon-Man," "A Plateful Brain," "In 3 Minutes Till Massacre," "Sex Euro and Evils Pop" -- you get the idea. The campy, trashy guitar and Theremin are punctuated by vintage spoken word samples and lots of female screaming and groaning -- sometimes sexual, sometimes painful, sometimes disturbingly (if predictably) both. And the disc includes several music videos, all of which are direct visual corollaries to the music: go-go-girl footage old and new, skeletons, hilariously campy space aliens and flying saucers, and so on. Irony is alive and well behind the former Iron Curtain. Or alive and sick, anyway. Which may be even better. - AllMusic Review by Rick Anderson

...The previous release, Vamp Babes, had a slightly lighter approach than this one. Black Black Magic is darker in tone bordering on sinister. The sampled vocals are back along with the superb twangy guitar. The cheesy moog sounds are limited and a Hammond organ has been brought forward in the mix. The drumming is, as usual, busy but not overbearing. Did I mention that there are no vocals? 13 retro surf soundtracks to some forgotten Ed Wood movie. “Auf Wiedersehen Show”, “Sentimental Doublebass” and the pretty much straightforward “Agent Tremolo” are the best tracks.
