Dex Romweber Duo "Ruins Of Berlin" 2009

Dexter Romweber has been making music since Flat Duo Jets called it a day in 1998, but not much of it has been making it onto record, and Ruins of Berlin, credited to the Dex Romweber Duo (with his sister Sara Romweber, formerly of Let's Active, on drums) is only his third album to appear in the ten-plus years since his old band rode off into the sunset…
...Anyone who wonders if Romweber has lost his touch during his layoff (or in the five years since his last album, 2004's Blues That Defy My Soul) will be happy to know that Ruins of Berlin confirms he's still a guitarist, songwriter, and singer to reckon with. However, this isn't the Flat Duo Jets, even if the simple instrumentation and frequent nods to the musical past are familiar stuff; while the FDJ's at their best were a ball of frantic energy, Ruins of Berlin is the sound of a more measured and contemplative Dexter Romweber. There's little in the way of amped-up rockabilly here (though the opener, "Lookout," finds Romweber trading some speedy licks with Rick Miller of Southern Culture on the Skids), and atmospheric midtempo numbers like "Lover's Gold," "Camilla's Gone (Let It Snow)," and "People" (no, not the Barbra Streisand oldie) are more consistent with the album's mood. But anyone who ever spent much time listening to the Flat Duo Jets knows Romweber's taste for classic jazz and pop tunes has always informed his music, and on Ruins of Berlin, he's just allowed them to take a larger place in the picture, alongside the faux-Eastern European folk of "Polish Work Song," the fractured guitar workout of "Grey Skies," and the jaunty travelogue of the title tune. Romweber also gets some well-deserved payback from longtime fans Neko Case, Chan Marshall, and Exene Cervenka, all of whom contribute lovely guest vocals to this set, and if you're afraid this might be a rock & roll-free set, "Picture" and "Cigarette Party" both generate enough heat to make fans happy. If this is a somewhat more sedate effort than the hot-wired Flat Duo Jets of yore, Ruins of Berlin shows Dexter Romweber's passion and gifts are as strong as ever, and the result is a compelling album from a one of a kind talent with plenty to offer. - AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

Bo Diddley "20th Anniversary Of Rock 'n' Roll" 1976

Before taking up blues and R&B, Diddley had studied classical violin, but shifted gears after hearing John Lee Hooker...
...In the early '50s, he began playing with his longtime partner, maraca player Jerome Green, to get what Bo's called "that freight train sound." Billy Boy Arnold, a fine blues harmonica player and singer in his own right, was also playing with Diddley when the guitarist got a deal with Chess in the mid-'50s (after being turned down by rival Chicago label Vee-Jay). His very first single, "Bo Diddley"/"I'm a Man" (1955), was a double-sided monster. The A-side was soaked with futuristic waves of tremolo guitar, set to an ageless nursery rhyme; the flip was a bump-and-grind, harmonica-driven shuffle, based around a devastating blues riff. Laika & The Cosmonauts "Local Warming" 2004

Laika & The Cosmonauts are not only Finland's #1 Surf band, they are considered by many to be the greatest rock'n'roll band in all of Scandinavia. That said, describing the Cosmonauts as simply a "surf" band falls short of telling the whole story of these masterful instrumentalists. While the Cosmonauts were initially inspired by such American instro-kings as Dick Dale and The Ventures, Local Warning finds the band digging deeper into the genre and referencing UK greats The Shadows and legendary producer Joe Meek ("Telstar"). The band's increasing use of layered and overlapping guitar and organ melodies and pounding rhythmic grooves - even dance beats - gives these songs a soundtrack-like, cinematic feel.
The Finland-based surf rockers' first studio album in almost seven years finds them on terra firma. Not straight surf, this is rather surf-influenced instrumental guitar rock with touches of prog and the occasional Zappa-esque flourish. The band has shelved some of the experiments in rap, reggae, and electronica they toyed with on Absurdistan, but still playfully push the boundaries of their genre with twisty tempos and textured, nuanced arrangements. They remain generally bouncy, but these songs are extremely well conceived and often surprisingly complex as they avoid exclusively riding Ventures-styled waves. Matti Pitsinki's keyboards along with the occasional sample add to the multi-layered methodology and Mikko Lankinen's inventive guitar tones keep the tunes, most of which stay well under four minutes, consistently engaging. Deep Purple-ish harder-edged rock ("Mr. Melée") and even lounge ("Meneito Paraiso") are parts of the Laika equation, but the band is at their best when they mix and match styles in the same track, as on the shape-shifting "Disco Plank." While little here is revolutionary, the members of Laika show themselves to be one of the world's foremost surf-based practitioners who are smart and talented enough not to remake the same album. The Grip Weeds "How I Won The War" 2015

Die-hard Beatles fans may recognize where New Jersey outfit, them Grip Weeds, get their name from and the title for their sixth studio release, How I Won the War…
...Both are John Lennon references. Lennon portrayed Musketeer Gripweed in the darkly-comic 1967 film set during World War II. But there’s more than Beatles-inspired music on the Grip Weeds’ new record, which has 13 full-length tunes plus four instrumental, or nearly-so, interludes. The Grip Weeds pen music which ranges from British Invasion power pop (think the Kinks, the early Who and obvious nods to mid-‘60s Beatles) to Southern California pop and rock (such as the Buffalo Springfield and the Byrds) to ‘70s power pop (early Cheap Trick, Dwight Twilley and the Shoes). Although How I Won the War isn’t a concept album (the record has nothing to do with the movie, other than having the same title), the foursome explores themes of conflict and resolve. The thematic material came about partially because of the band’s near-breakup, when longtime bassist Michael Kelly left (he was replaced by Dave DeSantis). Furthering the drama were family ties which intensified some of the pressures—vocalist Kurt Reil is married to lead guitarist Kristen Pinell.The stress functioned as armor which helped the band ascend above difficulties. Several songs surge with energy, including the title track opener, with allusions to war imagery masquerading as relationship disillusion (“hearts and minds,” “on the run under the gun” and “blown apart shot through the heart”). The stomping rocker, “Follow Me Blind,” (the closest the Grip Weeds get to imitating the Smithereens) has a comparable configuration with lines about how “it’s the same every day, I’m at war with you” and “it’s the love I capture all of the time.” The power-pop piece, “Rise Up,” has a similar structure but is a shout against complacency, with words like “you plant your stick in the mud and look no further.” Power pop is a frequent focus with upfront and loud guitars and a forceful rhythm section. Sibling harmonies and ringing guitars permeate “Life Saver,” about how a romantic partner can also be the one who drags someone down. There’s a slice of the Beatles' pop-psychedelic perspective during “Force of Nature,” but the ‘60s nostalgia is tempered by heavier guitars which evoke the Grip Weeds’ late-‘80s birth. The Grip Weeds tone the proceedings down a bit on the tersely pessimistic “Other Side of Your Heart,” which mixes in acoustic guitar and reflective lyrics, concerning how love can sometimes turn fallow. The Grip Weeds’ steady and sure grasp of ‘60s and ‘70s pop tactics comes out during “Rainbow Quartz,” which deftly blends acoustic and electric guitars, analog keyboards and percussive elements. The Grip Weeds aptly end with “The Inner Light,” an obscure Beatles B-side composed by George Harrison. - Doug Simpson

Shark Quest "Gods and Devils" 2004

After a lengthy hiatus, Shark Quest returns with Gods and Devils, a collection of pieces featuring works used as the soundtrack to a work by self-taught counterculture animator Bruce Bickford and also in Monster Road, a documentary on the animator's life and rarely seen work…
...Much of the album is quite animated-sounding, particularly the opening track, "The Rosetta Barrage," which, with its intricate mandolins and twangy guitars, sounds a little like an Appalachian take on a spaghetti Western theme by Ennio Morricone. Morricone's name is often bandied about, along with those of Friends of Dean Martinez and Calexico, when discussing Shark Quest, and for good reason: all of these artists share an exquisite sense of mood and atmosphere. Hints of surf bands like the Ventures pop up on the darkly lovely "Sin the Moon," and while tracks such as "Three Ivy Leaves" still feel like part of a soundtrack rather than a stand-alone work, an air of restrained mystery runs through Gods and Devils. However, the album's best moments, such as the spooky epic "Katherine of Krakow," have more than enough presence in their own right. The wide array of instruments used in Gods and Devils' arrangements -- which include steel guitar, marimbas, all kinds of percussion, and a water bottle -- give the album more color and texture than the group's previous work. A dreamy but involving listening experience, Gods and Devils marks an important step forward for Shark Quest. - AllMusic Review by Heather Phares

Having tried everything else in his search for a new sound, Bo moved into a jazz vein on this record, and the results are not bad, but not they're not really Bo, either...
...His cover of Van Morrison's "I've Been Workin'," and his rendition of "Hit Or Miss" aren't half-bad, but they're just classic Bo-- just Bo fronting some really good jazzmen in New York. For the first time, the Bo Diddley beat appears nowhere on one of his albums. There is one good blues tune here, however, in "Evelee," the only Bo original on Big Bad Bo. It features a powerful performance by the Originator, who working for most of its length with a relatively stripped down band; this one number should've been the model for the whole album. - Review by Bruce Eder

The On and Ons "It's the On and Ons Calling" 2015

After a successful stint touring Australia and the US in 2012 as members of The Paul Collins Beat, local vocalist and guitarist Glenn Morris and his drummer brother Brian were encouraged to record their own album of Glenn's original songs...
...Both members of local Sydney outfit The Zeros, Glenn is perhaps better known as a member of Kings of the Sun and later The Screaming Tribesmen. Produced and engineered by legendary Australian guitarist Dennis Wilson of Khavas Jute fame, It's The On And Ons Calling consists of 11 songs that are pure rock/power pop in essence. Just what you might hope for; great tunes based on exceptional harmonies and classic instrumentation. The On and On's have been rounded out with the addition of bassist Clyde Bramley (ex Hoodoo Gurus), guitarist/keyboardist Richard Lane (ex Stems) and guitarist Jon Roberts (ex Barbarellas).

Calexico "Alone Again Or" EP 2003

Alone Again Or was originally performed by Love on the album Forever Changes.
Also in 1995, Burns and Convertino started recording as Spoke and issued a self-titled album for the German label Hausmusik; by the time Spoke was released by Touch & Go imprint Quarterstick in 1997, the project's name was Calexico. That year, Convertino and Burns teamed up with Gelb and Germano as OP8 for the album Slush. To make the next Calexico album, the duo recorded at Tucson's Wavelab Studios as well as their homes with musicians including Gelb. A concept album about the desert of Arizona and northern Mexico, May 1998's The Black Light expanded on the cinematic feel and dry, evocative sound of the debut. The album earned critical acclaim, while the band's reputation as a live act grew after opening for Lambchop, Pavement, and the Dirty Three. During their 1999 tour, the band sold the limited-edition release The Road Map, the first in what would become a long series of albums they made available to fans through their website or at the merchandise table at their shows. - by Mark Deming

Laika & The Cosmonauts "Laika Sex Machine" 2001

If you have not seen Laika and the Cosmonauts live you may not believe your ears when listening to this album. These guys are masters of their instruments. They play the familiar tunes from their albums with double speed and energy but with precision. It is flawless. I have seen this band like dozen times live and it never fails to deliver an excellent show. L&C is a great live band and although they tour occasionally in USA, many fans will never see them play live. This album is a treat for them. Put this album to your player, turn the volume to southeast (10 that is) and enjoy. Finland's favorite retro-rockers rev up with a generous 26-song, 75-minute set of music recorded live, predominantly in 1998 and on their home turf. Except for some brief introductions in both English and the band's native tongue, this is a non-stop roller coaster ride through instrumental rock & roll. The quartet plays with fire and fury whether covering genre classics like "Telstar" or obscurities such as Roy Budd's theme to "Get Carter." Not surprisingly, a Ventures tune gets worked in, but the group digs deep into the California band's catalog to unearth "Fugitive." The foursome charges through a unique combination of Bernard Herrmann's themes from Psycho and Vertigo in a composite renamed "Psyko." "Mission Impossible" also gets the Laika treatment as they speed and trash it up in a breathless version that doesn't break the two-minute mark. While not as recognizable, the group churns out originals with as much flair touching on hard rock with a slight Spanish matador approach on "Look! No Head!" and the "Walk Don't Run"-styled "Floating" which stands as a contemporary surf classic. Many of these tracks appear in less frantic fashion on the band's studio albums, but the live approach electrifies these versions. Certainly you'll never hear "Ode to Billy Joe" the same way after experiencing Laika's take on the song (which they rename "Sauna-Soul" for no apparent reason). With its extended playing time, there is plenty of room for experimentation on a low-down run-through of Henry Mancini's "Experiment in Terror," a showcase for Matti Pitsinki's distorted organ sounds. The rhythm section is spry but stays out of the way of the lead guitar and keyboards that drive this music. Crowd noise is minimal to non-existent, smartly keeping the focus on the tight musicianship and superbly well-recorded tunes. Better and more lively than the group's slightly less compelling studio albums, this is a rousing live performance from one of contemporary music's most talented and creative instrumental combos. The Grip Weeds "Inner Grooves" 2013

The Grip Weeds' name tells you a lot about the New Jersey band, which got that name from John Lennon's Private Gripweed character in the 1967 comedy How I Won the War…
...Consistently mindful of 1960s rock, the Grip Weeds are a retro-psychedelic outfit whose influences range from the British Invasion power pop of the Who, the Kinks, and Revolver-era Beatles to the Southern California jangle pop of the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. The rockin' yet highly melodic quartet has often been compared to another New Jersey band, the Smithereens, and in fact, Grip Weeds singer/drummer Kurt Reil played alongside Smithereens members Dennis Diken (drums) and Jim Babjak (guitar) in the 1990s side band Jim Babjak's Buzzed Meg. But while the Grip Weeds and the Smithereens have a mutual appreciation of British Invasion rock, no one would have a problem telling them apart -- the Grip Weeds are too psychedelic to be mistaken for the tougher, grittier, more forceful Smithereens.
The Grip Weeds were formed in New Brunswick, NJ, in the late '80s, when Reil and his brother, singer/guitarist Rick Reil, joined forces with guitarist/singer Kristin Pinell and bassist Michael Nattboy. After playing the East Coast club scene for a few years, the Grip Weeds recorded an EP titled See You Through for Ground Up in 1992. Their first full-length album, House of Vibes, came out on Ground Up in 1994 and was followed by 1998's The Sound Is in You on the Buy or Die label. Summer of a Thousand Years was released on the Rainbow Quartz label in 2001, followed by the reissue of The Sound Is in You with bonus tracks in 2003. In 2004, the band released its fourth full-length, Giant on the Beach, again with Rainbow Quartz. Mesmerizingly intriguing. Speaks to you like a romantic ghost story...
...What a superb album. Everything is as it should be. Atardecer continually sounds fresh listen after listen. There is no fluff here, and the album is short and sweet... a very cohesive and concise offering. The mood of the album is perhaps summed up best as that of twilight longing. One of the best things is the lack of a singer... the music is gloriously free of any whining or personal introspection... rather it opens itself up to the listener as a personal soundtrack... or soundscape. It's a shame that fine intrumental music does not command the audience that it did in the days of jazz. I especially recommend this to those of you who drive long distances alone in the dark. Calexico "Great American Music Hall, San Francisco CA 12.01.2002" - CD 2

...Valenzuela proves inestimable, particularly on "Fade" (a 12-minute Miles Davis-meets-Morricone rave-up) and "Sonic Wind," his muted and clarion-like horn blowing powering some memorably climatic crescendos...
...The infectious single "Crystal Frontier" (from the EP Even My Sure Things Fall Through) was a regular show-closer at the time, its mariachi horn blasts, flamenco-like strumming, and extended bridge revving up crowds to a fever pitch before sending them on their way. That song was eventually supplanted by the equally rambunctious "Guero Canelo" to close the Feast of Wire tours that followed -- that this band has become even tighter on subsequent tours almost stretches credulity. One does wish there was at least one more cut on the 69-minute Scraping -- since they were cherry-picking, a version of another popular show opener and quintessential Calexico song, "Glowing Heart of the World" (from the Road Map EP), would have been a good candidate. There may be even better versions of some of these songs on the many live bootlegs generated by Calexico, but it's unlikely they'll sound this crisp. Scraping offers irrefutable evidence that Calexico is one of the most entertaining live bands -- and, sadly, still somewhat neglected -- America has to offer. - by John Schacht

Chapel Hill, NC, quintet Shark Quest plays eclectic instrumental rock geared toward the alternative market…
...Their music draws from atmospheric soundtrack music (Ennio Morricone being one likely overused reference point), folk music, desert twang, and bits of other genres. Although pretty guitar-oriented, they also employ banjo and mandolin (played by Sara Bell), as well as occasional cello, keyboards, and vibes. Their debut Battle of the Loons was released in 1998. Calexico has come a long way from those tentative but promising early duo dates that Joey Burns and John Convertino cobbled together during the Spoke years, when the Tucson-based band was still more of a quiet side project from the pair's regular gig as Giant Sand's rhythm section...
...But beginning with the full-band shows for The Black Light tours, Calexico's eclectic mix of minor-key, mariachi-surf-spaghetti-twang-rock was custom-honed to replicate, and expand upon, the band's one-of-a-kind studio sound. The trumpet blasts, eerie vibraphone, plains-sweeping pedal steel, reverb-happy riffs, and thunderous press-rolls offered something for a broad range of music lovers -- particularly in Europe, where fans caught on earlier and in greater numbers. An Internet/tour-only CD www.casadecalexico.com, Scraping features the same band Calexico has fielded for several years now -- Burns (guitar, vocals), Convertino (drums), Martin Wenk (vibes, trumpet), Volker Zander (bass), Jacob Valenzuela (trumpet, vibes), and Lambchop member Paul Niehaus (pedal steel, guitar) -- and documents them at a time when they've obviously gelled. Ten of the 13 pristine-sounding cuts are from a January 2002 show at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. Bo Diddley "The London Bo Diddley Sessions" 1973

After Howlin' Wolf made the Billboard album charts in 1970 with his London Howlin' Wolf Sessions release, Chess duly began preparing similarly titled albums by its remaining roster of stars -- Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry followed the Wolf -- and in 1973 this Bo Diddley release came along...
...Actually, a lot of it was done in Chicago, with the London portion of the sessions added, seemingly to justify the title. And it did sell better than Bo's other original albums of this era. It remains in print on compact disc, one of a only handful of his albums so released. As with Muddy Waters' London Muddy Waters Sessions album, Bo's presence was somewhat overwhelmed by the massive number of session musicians involved (well-meaning though they may have been) and more so, because Bo was still looking for a new sound, whereas Muddy knew what he was about. The songs are pretty fair -- a mix of soul and funk -- with elements of his old sound, and this is probably the best compromise he achieved during this phase of his career, between the old and the new. - Review by Bruce Eder
