1313 Mockingbird Lane "Triskaidekaphobia" 1993

The music of 1313 Mockingbird Lane was said to keep to the basics of fuzz guitar, Farfisa organ, and screaming. The original line-up featured Haunted Hausmann (guitar, vocals), Kim13 (organ), Jay "Robin Graves" Howlett (bass, vocals), and Steve E. Luv (drums). The first of several "must have 45s" was a debut single produced on Scarab Records in 1989, titled Hornets Nest b/w My Hearse Is Double Parked. With later songs like "Dig Her Up" and an anti-Beatles tune called "I Don't Wanna Hold Your Hand", the prominent lyrical themes of gloom and doom presented by the band were combined with a healthy dose of tongue-in-cheek garage humor.

Drummer Steve E. Luv quickly departed and was replaced by former Link Wray Live In '85 drummer Marty Feier. The band's second release, the four-song EP The Second Coming Of 1313 Mockingbird Lane (Scarab Records 1989) was voted by both Schenectady Gazette and Albany's Metroland as one of the "top local recordings of 1989" and was distributed internationally. Shortly after the release of that EP, the band signed with Sundazed Records. Sundazed Records releases rare and previously unreleased tracks by different garage rock and surf music bands including The Knickerbockers and The Five Americans. The band's first full-length LP Have Hearse Will Travel was released by Sundazed in 1990. The vinyl was pressed in a distinct slime green color. The liner notes for the 13-song album were written by Blotto lead singer, Sergeant Blotto.
From this point, the band line-up changed again with the eventual departure of both bassist Robin Graves and drummer Marty Feier, who was replaced by Rusty "Krusty" Nales, then by drummer OP, and replaced again by Dave Pollack. As organist Kim commented, "We go through more drummers than Spinal Tap. Feier departed the band for a full time touring gig in The Cast of Beatlemania, which starred members of the Broadway show Beatlemania. 1313 Mockingbird Lane would perform multiple double bills with Boston-based garage rock legends, Lyres. In early 1994, the band caught some media attention by issuing a simultaneous triple release of their new recordings. In September 1994, Brian Goodman of Rochester, New York band The Projectiles replaced drummer Dave Pollack for the final two singles, released in 1996. The band split up in 1996, playing the last show at Pauly's Hotel in their hometown of Albany. That night, Susan Yasinski from Susan and the Surftones was in the crowd and recruited Brian Goodman to join her band, with Kim13 soon to follow. The band recently successfully completed a PledgeMusic campaign which resulted in the April 2015 Cacaphone Records re-release of the debut LP on vinyl, CD, and cassette, remastered with bonus tracks. - wiki

Laughing Clowns "Cruel, But Fair" The Complete Clowns Recordings 2005 - disc 1

When Ed Kuepper decided to leave his legendary band The Saints in 1979, fans and critics alike might have been forgiven for expecting his next musical venture to be in a similar vein - anarchic garage rock, oozing with punk attitude and snarling riffs…

...What they got instead was a gloriously unique and inventive band called the Laughing Clowns.The signs were certainly there on The Saints' 1978 album Prehistoric Sounds - a telling bunch of slower songs and arrangements, a greater use of (gasp!) acoustic guitars, as well as horns and piano. Unwilling to tread the same sonic paths,Kuepper was determined to forge a new sound based on an unlikely pair of musical inspirations: jazz tenorist Archie Shepp, and crooner Tony Bennett's late '50s album The Beat Of My Heart. "I wanted to put the emphasis on the drums and instruments other than guitar to make the musical points," Kuepper explains in his liner notes - and from that singular brief the Clowns were born. Too often neglected, both during their career and since, Cruel, But Fair presents the Clowns' entire studio output on vinyl - 48 tracks across three CDs, in all their remastered glory. Their first single, Holy Joe, set the signature sound for much of the band's work over the next 6 years: Ed's echo-drenched vocals married to Jeff Wegener's energetic, jazz flavoured drumming, with healthy dollops of strident piano and wailing horn melodies thrown into the mix. But Kuepper put few reins on his song-writing muse, channelling all the musical possibilities of the post-punk period he himself helped usher in. From Flypaper, which roars out of the speakers like one of Morricone's great lost spaghetti-western themes, all clattering drums and frenetic guitars, to the slow, sparse percussion and weary horns of Collapse Board, and the edgy but elegant rock of Eternally Yours (the closest the band ever got to a hit single), it's obvious just how keen Kuepper was to explore a larger musical palette. Crystal Clear is a galloping, ska-inspired number complete with blaring, honking saxes, while Ghost Of An Ideal Wife's hypnotic banjo & sax groove and Sometimes' skeletal funk are works few would have expected from the man who co-wrote (I'm) Stranded. Even now, it's virtually impossible to categorize the incredible mix of rock, soul, punk, new wave and jazz elements that Laughing Clowns fused together - not always perfectly, but with a forcefulness and ambition that remains simply undeniable. - MOJO

Thee Mighty Caesars "English Punk Rock Explosion!!" 1988

Thee Mighty Caesars were a Medway scene garage / punk group, formed by Billy Childish (vocals / guitar) in 1985 after the demise of The Milkshakes, alongside John Agnew (bass) and Graham Day (drums), who initially was still also in fellow Medway band The Prisoners. Bruce Brand (ex-Pop Rivets / Milkshakes) later replaced Day, who formed his own band The Prime Movers with fellow Prisoner Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard (ex-Daggermen). Childish / Brand then formed new band Thee Headcoats.

Thee Mighty Caesars -- punk raconteur Billy Childish's interim band between the retro-revivalism of the Milkshakes and his ultimate rock & roll expression in Thee Headcoats -- were the ideal bridge between the Shakes' stylish, loyal Merseybeat revivalism and the fully-functioning threadbare punk-rock cathartic songwriting Childish began wielding like a rusty knife once Thee Headcoats had formed. Even though the aesthetic trappings were the most ridiculous of any of Childish's outfits (the band was pictured and, presumably, performed in togas with leaf wreathes donning their noggins) Thee Caesars allowed him a forum for making a transition between rocker and artist. English Punk Rock Explosion!, a greatest hits compilation, was the only Mighty Caesars album to capture the full scope of this rock & roll culture collision. From brutal guitar instrumentals such as "Death of a Mighty Caesar," with it's tribal beat and percussive guitar, to the first recording of the nihilist, venom-spewing anthem "You Make Me Die," English Punk Rock Explosion! is an unrelenting parade of melodic-yet-raw diamonds in the rough. While this may have been Childish's least prolific and shortest-lived band, this is a crucial document of DIY punk's (ancient?) history. Thee Mighty Caesars "Punk Rock Showcase" 1987

The band founded Billy Childish, Graham Day and John Agnew in 1985 after the end of the MILKSHAKES…

...Sixties garage punk in its Northwest American variety had not yet experienced the "rebirth" on which a label like Crypt could build in the nineties, Childish and Co. laid the foundation for the revival at that time, played with quotes from in the artwork Records from the sixties, the cover “Beware ...”, for example, shows the band in a pose that was typical for one of the countless combos of the genre in the sixties, as well as the note “Rhythm And Blues Series” in the top right corner of the back cover - which, by the way, is identical on three albums with the exception of “Wiseblood” - details of the line-up and songs are framed by a woodcut-like motif of a Roman temple.
The musical variety was already quite limited back then, but greater than later with the HEADCOATS. In general, it is noticeable that Childish later became more radical, simpler and more "punk", here, however, the effort to do justice to the role models from the sixties, somewhere between R&B, surf, beat and garage.

Farmyard were a Wellington group who were around only for a short time from 1970 to 1971. Rick White, previously of the Relics and Tom Thumb, started with the group but was later replaced by Bernard Lee.
Their first single for Polydor in 1970 was "Learnin' 'bout Living"/"Da Woirks". It was successful enough to gain entry in to the 1971 Loxene Gold Disk Awards. A self-titled album was also released and came in a plastic bag with a poster. - https://www.sergent.com.au/music/farmyard.html

The Barracudas "The Barracudas" 2005 + "God Bless The 45" 2013 - 7"/45rpm

THE BARRACUDAS ARE BACK!!! Autumn 2003 and in a moment of patent absurdity the unthinkable happens. Again. A telephone rings and a venerable cult lead singer answers to hear the voice of his fellow founder member and foil outlining an unlikely live show in Madrid. Considering the fact that their last rehearsal is now over ten years in the past, the singer is for a moment unnerved. Then instinct kicks in and, a few days later when the guitarist has had a chance to perform an unreality check, the plotting begins…

...The band is The Barracudas and the story very much in step with a career wayward at best. But this time it is different. A reformation a decade before had come and gone accomplishing little more than bilious nostalgia; this time, with egos subdued and music to the fore, a momentum establishes itself and in little time produces a new single, THE glam turn “Don't Ever Say It Can't Be So”, a showcase in Madrid, a documentary and, finally, a new, eponymous album.
Their first in over ten years, The Barracudas is no nostalgia trip. Recorded largely at north London's renowned Cowshed Studio and a veritable living museum of prize gear, Berry Street Studios, and produced by Wills, this is the Barracudas album that not only fans but also the band themselves have been waiting for since "Drop Out", their legendary EMI debut launched them on a journey of sound that would take them from snotty surf punks to the new Groovies in a few years, then deposit them in no band's land until the CD surge and sundry attentions revived their fortunes.
As a cursory look at radio playlists and cult whisperings will attest, The Barracudas reappearance after so long could not be better timed. Garage music is in fashion (again) and so is surf (well, Brian Wilson, and let's face it they might as well be synonymous). Power pop, likewise, from a 45 grave, has risen to reassert its importance. Indeed, all the styles the band have mastered and made their own are now current and selling. And another thing: The Barracudas sounds younger than yesterday but with experience supplying an edge that cuts across time to the heart of the band.
The Barracudas is simply the sound of survivors with nothing to prove and their enjoyment audible in your ears and guts. In twenty-five years they have changed only to go back to where they started, with an irrepressible enthusiasm and unbending intent to make their own kind of music. The Rebels "Madrigal" 1969

Originally as Larry's Rebels, Larry Morris (frontman) left the band and the band became The Rebels, without Larry. The band moved to Australia in 1969 where they split in 1970.

The story goes like this: Larry's Rebels were one of the most successful 1960s bands in NZ, mixing up garage, psych and pop. They remained a major New Zealand act until the end of 1968, although personal relationships were beginning to deteriorate. By Christmas it was agreed to split up into two entities, Larry Morris as a solo act and the Rebels as a quartet. A farewell single was released at the beginning of 1969, with "Mo'reen" on the A-Side and a Larry-less quartet number "By The Time" on the reverse (also for sale this week). The single reached number 11 on the National Charts in February and that was it for Larry's Rebels.
For a time it appeared that the split was healthy for both camps. The Rebels enlisted Glyn Mason, formerly with the Bitter End and Jigsaw, as their new leader and recorded a song called "My Son John" (also for sale this week). The single raced all the way to number one on the National Charts. The flip-side was a good thumping psych rocker called "Passing You By". Both tracks appeared on Madrigal, the Rebels album which came out instead of the long promised second Larry's Rebels album.
By the time the album was released, the Rebels were resident in Melbourne and had been signed to do a one-off single over there. The single was "Can You Make It On Your Own"/"I Can See The World". When it sunk without a trace in New Zealand as well as Australia there didn't seem much point carrying on. Bookings became sparse, and the old spark had basically gone. In January 1970, they were no longer. Viv got married and went on a honeymoon, John and Nooky returned to New Zealand for a long rest. Mal and Glyn remained in the music field in Australia. Mason went on to join Chain, Home, Copperwine, Ariel and Stockley, See and Mason, while Logan moved through Healing Force, Carson, Renee Geyer Band and the Little River Band.
This original pressing on Impact (IMPS 107) has some wear on the bottom lefta nd right corners and a little creasing; there is a spot of ringwear on the back. Cover is VG+ then. The vinyl also has light marks but plays very nicely and cleanly. Copies tend to sell for around the US$160-$185 (see www.gemm.com) mark, so the starting price here is very modest. Thee Mighty Caesars "Don't Give Any Dinner To Henry Chinaski" 1987

Early Demonstration Recordings. Track A3 is listed as "Dead American Castro-Funk Mix" and Track B4 is listed as "U.S. Funk-Master Megga Maggot Mix" on the sleeve but not the vinyl. Thee Mighty Caesars were a Medway scene garage/punk group, formed by Billy Childish (vocals/guitar) in 1985 after the demise of The Milkshakes, alongside John Agnew (bass) and Graham Day (drums), who initially was still also in fellow Medway band The Prisoners. Bruce Brand (ex-Pop Rivets/Milkshakes) later replaced Day, who formed his own band The Prime Movers with fellow Prisoner Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard (ex-Daggermen). Childish / Brand then formed new band Thee Headcoats.

"Don't Give Any Dinner To Henry Chinaski" is hands down the best record of BILLY CHILDISH's most prolific career. I went hog wild scarfing up MIGHTY CAESARS vinyl in the late 80s/early 90s when the first Crypt best-of compilation turned me onto these guys, and at one point I think I had the entire discography before Thee Headcoats went off the deep end and tossed off onto the public every fart & titter committed to tape . This one from 1987, all 19 minutes of it, was by far the boldest and most raw thing this very bold & raw trio put to vinyl, featuring early wide-groove, near-45rpm versions of hits like "She's Just 15", "Devious Means" and "I Can Tell". This is when Childish & co. were deepest into their LINK WRAY fixation(s), so among the 10 tracks are incredible, hotwired versions of "Comanche" and "Run Chicken Run" -- the former is so booming & loud I'd venture to say I'd even take it over Link's version. Also features a thumper of a run-through of THE TROGGS' "I Want You" and several other fantastic originals that never made it to later best-of comps (to my knowledge), like "The Bay of Pigs" and my fave, "La-La, La-La, La-La-La" (easily one of the Top 3-4 Caesars tracks ever). This is a band it's not difficult to forget about sometimes, given their daunting discography and near vanishment from the historical record, but man, if someone was wise & precient enough to re-press this thing, I can think of a lot of ears that'd wanna hear it. - Jay H. Larry's Rebels "I Feel Good" - The Essential Purple Flushes Of Larry's Rebels 1965-1969 ed. 2015

This is a nice collection of good beat songs by this long forgotten beat band from new zealand that where around from late 1964 to early 1970, a lot of the tracks on this cd are covers of big uk mod acts like the who, the creation, the action and so on from that mid 60s uk mod boom, also there are some really nice originals on here as well, who larry was or who the rebels where???…

…He booklet rpm issued with this great release explains all of that, these guys sure had a following opening gigs in australia and new zealand back in the 60s for bigger aussie bands of the time like billy thorpe and the aztecs, the easybeats, also from the uk the yardbirds and a host of others, if you liked the british or aussie 60s beat/pop scene THIS IS A GREAT COLLECTION TO OWN, i cant say this is the most or i should say was the most mind blowing band of these days but they are a very great nz band of note from the 60s, rpm did a great job remastering all these songs pushing 50 some odd years old now and i am loving this cd and if you are into the whole 60s thing i am sure you will to, the last track on this disc is a jingle for an nz radio station for coca cola, that seemed to be a big thing for beat , mod and pop bands from the 60s to do at that time, still my favorite jingle was THE WHOS coke after coke jingle from 1967. - Edward J. mccarthy Jr.

Thee Mighty Caesars "Acropolis Now" 1986 + "Little By Little" 1986 - 12'EP

Thee Mighty Caesars were a primitive garage punk group, formed by Billy Childish in 1985 after the demise of The Milkshakes. They influenced many American bands, especially The Mummies and Sub Pop groups. They were arguably the group that brought about the resurgence of garage rock.

Just one of garage punk poet Billy Childish's many bands, Thee Mighty Caesars differ little from Childish's standard output -- energetic, inspired, raw, amateurish garage punk rock & roll with a reluctance to sacrifice spontaneous expression for self-editing.
After stints in The Pop Rivits and The(e) Milkshakes, Childish briefly worked with the Delmonas in 1984, but then formed Thee Mighty Caesars with Milkshakes' John Agnew (bass) and Bruce Brand (drums).
Between 1985 and 1990, Thee Mighty Caesars released nine albums (many of which are now out of print), one EP, and two compilations. After their self-titled debut, drummer Brand left and was replaced by ex-Prisoners Graham Day; in 1986, the Caesars added Sarah (Delmonas) and Fay (Makin' Time; organ, vocals) for Acropolis Now. This lineup held until 1990, when Agnew chose to spend his time as a soundman for the James Taylor Quartet. Graham Day resumed work with the Prime Movers, while Childish concentrated on side projects and a new band, Thee Headcoats.

Eric Dolphy "Outward Bound" 1960

Outward Bound, recorded on 1 April 1960, is Eric Dolphy's first date as a leader, containing six titles.

The late multi-reed player / composer Eric Dolphy, one of the most pivotal figures in jazz, was a fiercely lyrical, imaginative musician at the forefront of the changes the music underwent in the 1960s. Dolphy, unlike some of his contemporaries, never totally abandoned the bebop approach of soloing over chord changes, but instead took his solos to fresh, expressive heights. Outward Bound, a quintet session from 1960, shows Dolphy in a somewhat transitional phase, his music closer to the hard bop of the late '50s than the free jazz of the '60s. "245" is a late-night blues on which Dolphy, on alto, testifies his feeling and loyalty to the form. The standard "Glad to Be Unhappy" is given a lovely, lively reading on flute, with the band providing appropriately spare, sympathetic accompaniment. "Miss Ann" features Dolphy swinging the bass clarinet with joyous abandon, as well as some crackling Freddie Hubbard trumpet. A highlight of this session is the imaginative, tasteful drumming of Roy Haynes, who has played with everyone from Charlie Parker to Pat Metheny. - AllMusic Review by Rovi Staff

Thee Mighty Caesars "Thee Caesars Of Trash" 1986

After leaving the beat group-inspired Milkshakes, Billy Childish moved forward in time and backward in fidelity with Thee Mighty Caesars. Formed with Graham Day of the Prisoners on drums, the band looked to primitive garage rock Bo Diddley and raging surf music for inspiration…

…Childish dialed up the intensity of the guitar and his lyrics took a decidedly bitter "girl done me wrong" turn as he howled and barked through the songs. It made for a thrillingly reductive sound that inspired many, many bands. The Caesars of Trash has a primitive, primal energy that comes flying out of the speakers and hits hard like a baseball bat applied directly to the skull. This album has been out of print for ages and is vital document both for Childish lovers and fans of take-no-prisoners rock & roll!

The La De Da's "Legend" - Compilation ed. 1975

Later sessions were recorded with different equipment at the Green Elephant Hotel and were more successful. The resulting LP, Rock'n'Roll Sandwich, was lauded by Glenn A. Baker as "one of Australia's finest rock albums, a fiery, cohesive work dominated by the superbly talented Kevin Borich and carried off by the reliable gutsiness of Peel and Barber." Touring behind the new LP, released in November 1973, the La De Da's enjoyed their most successful period to date, including supports for Elton John and Suzi Quatro on their Australian tours...

The solid gigging continued through 1974 and into 1975, including a well-received appearance at the final Sunbury Festival in January 1975. During 1975 problems for the band increased—Australian commercial radio was ignoring their records, and internal tensions were building. The situation was described by Glenn A. Baker in 1981: The disintegration that took hold ... was an easily diagnosed malady which has afflicted every Australian rock and roll band that has ever achieved a degree of popular success. Essentially it comes down to: the bigger you become, the more meaningless your future. Overseas bands can make an album, do a tour and then hide away for a year or two to prepare the next LP with no concern for loss of position. In Australia, just three months off the road to prepare new material and a band's gig price drops to half, the media erects new superstars in their place, and the public acts as if they never were ... That is what killed the La De Da's: the bludgeoning effect of realising that, after 10 hard years, nothing tangible had really been achieved and the only thing that lay ahead was more of the same.
By early 1975, the band's spirits were flagging. In March EMI issued Legend, a valedictory sampler of single A-sides, recent recordings and leftovers put together by Michael Chugg, which also included a much-requested studio rendition of "All Along The Watchtower", Kevin's Hendrix-inspired live showpiece.
