The Sonics "Busy Body!!!" Live In Tacoma 1964 (2007)

The Fall of '64 was way furious in the top left corner of the USA! The Sonics howl on unissued live early local blasts that show off their prowess as seething R&B stoked savages covering the tuff stuff... plus a taste of shapes to come with 'The Witch'. These shows were live KTNT Friday night Teen Time radio broadcasts-- deadly for date drivers crankin' up sounds on Dad's dash, no doubt!
The only thing more blistering than Washington State garage legends the Sonics are the Sonics live in concert. This utter gem of a disc finds the young Turks working their collective mojo until they explode. Recording for a pair of radio broadcasts on their home turf in Tacoma, the band blazes through a set of classic R&B numbers, including "Have Love Will Travel" and "Oo Pooh Pa Doo," as well as several original burners, most notably their classic "The Witch." This is an old-school, in-the-red face-melter that's a must-have for garage aficionados.

The Paladins "El Matador" 2003

The Paladins are one of the few bands out there to still continually tour and play roots music. Go to the shows. Support it. There are very few bands like this out there that are this accessible. Do your part.

"Like the Blasters, The Paladins continue to play roots music, from rockabilly, early rock'n'roll, rockin' blues, western swing and jumpin' jive. This cd covers all of these generes. If you like the early 50's Sun Records sessions, you'll love this cd, the music sounds like Sun stuff from the early 50's. Most of this cd is straight up rockabilly and some rockin' blues, and a little honky tonk western swing, in Hank Willaims Sr. tradition. The bands sparse trio sound of Guitar, slap stand up bass and Drums is true to the instrumentation of the 50's rockabilly bands. I saw this band last evening at the Doll Hut in Anahein, and they played many songs from this cd, it is without a doubt thier finest release yet (and that's saying a lot). Cut Off Your Hands "Hollow" 2011

...You & I reached No.21 on the NZ Album Chart and received positive reviews locally and abroad – Spin magazine calling it an “impressive debut, a tsunami of galloping rhythms, lightning-charged guitar lines, and choruses that immediately infect your brain”. Despite the glowing outcome, Sixsevenine pulled out because of the lack of radio singles, leaving the band in a dead end with the UK. “We had a label that wanted us to be the Kaiser Chiefs or something, so they threw this shit on the wall – and then when it doesn’t stick they freak out!”..
...Eventually, they moved to the USA where they continued their streak of live shows, driving the length of the country twice and clocking up over 150 headline and festival shows in a year. By the end of 2008 guitarist Michael Ramirez decided to leave the band, although he returned to fill in for his own replacement, ex-Collapsing Cities guitarist Jonathan Lee, for a number of Australasian gigs. Hearing deterioration led drummer Brent Harris to stop playing and also head home six months later. Elroy Finn, the youngest son of Neil Finn, stepped up to the drum stool so touring could continue. Harris eventually made a return to the stage, with his hearing loss moderately under control. In 2011 the band set out to record their second album. They previously attempted to record it in Sydney at the end of 2009 but decided to put it on the backburner. With the aid of a NZ On Air album grant received in August 2009, Hollow was recorded in the same location as their first EP – the Harris family home. All tracks were recorded live within a week, with Peter Wood engineering and the band producing. “We kind of deliberately did this record here and even our label (Inertia) and management (Speak N Spell), who are based in Australia, we didn’t want them here. ‘This is our thing, let’s do it our way.’” Hollow was released in August 2011 through Frenchkiss and Speak N Spell Records and was supported with a tour of New Zealand and Australia. The band was mostly inactive over the following five years, though it played the odd show (most notably supporting Foals in Auckland in 2013). In the meantime, Phillip Hadfield had been playing bass in She’s So Rad, so it was no surprise that that the band’s singer (and experienced producer) Jeremy Toy was brought on board when COYH came back together in 2016. ‘Hate Somebody’ was released prior to a headline slot at the Other’s Way Festival that year. The song described Johnston’s experience watching new residents in his suburb of Grey Lynn mistreating his neighbours who had been there for decades. The theme must have struck a chord, since the track clocked up nearly half-a-million streams (and was accompanied by a video by internationally successful director, Joel Kefali). In 2017, the band made its fourth appearance at Laneway Festival, which was promoted with the release of another new single - the eminently danceable ‘Higher Lows and Lower Highs.’- audioculture

Former Shane Champagne and Pink Cadillac singer David Champagne led the Massachusetts quartet Treat Her Right, whose style encompassed rock & roll, rockabilly, blues-rock, and swamp-rock, all with post-punk attitude...
...Champagne also sported a taste for avant-garde cover songs, including material by James Blood Ulmer and Captain Beefheart. Treat Her Right released its debut album in 1986; their 1989 Tied to the Tracks featured bassist Mark Sandman singing lead on several songs. Cut Off Your Hands "You and I" 2008

...In March 2007, the newly named Cut Off Your Hands made several trips to the USA, playing at SXSW in Austin, Texas, plus a number of shows in Los Angeles and around the CMJ Music Marathon in New York, resulting in an on-going touring relationship with UK math-rock band Foals and New York indie band Les Savy Fav...
...Shortly afterwards the band made their way across the Atlantic to record their second EP with former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler at Edwyn Collins’ West Heath Studios in London. While in the UK they also played a series of shows. During their final gig of the tour Johnston leapt from a 15-foot balcony, resulting in a broken leg and the cancellation of the band’s third Australian visit. The group’s second EP Blue on Blue comprised four tracks, including radio singles ‘Oh Girl’ and ‘Still Fond’, and was released with financial backing from Levi's Jeans’ label Levity in Australia and New Zealand. Significant radio airplay for ‘Still Fond’ in Australia resulted in the band being offered a slot on the Big Day Out tour.
Their debut Shaky Hands EP was also picked up for release in October of 2007 through LA indie label IAMSOUND Records, kick-starting a roll of success with international labels including representation in the UK through Warner subsidiary Sixsevenine (679) – who flew out to see them in Australia, as well as New York indie label Frenchkiss Records in North America and the aforementioned Speak N Spell Records in Australia and New Zealand.
With a debut album pending the band eventually settled in London, and decided once again to record with Butler, ahead of British producer Flood (who produced the B-side ‘One Last Time’) and Stephen Street (who did produce and mix one album track, ‘Turn Cold’).
In October 2008 the band’s debut album You & I was released in New Zealand with the inclusion of four tracks taken off their earlier EPs – ‘Expectations’, ‘Oh Girl’, ‘Still Fond’ and ‘You & I’. Before the album saw the light of day in the UK and the USA a separate promo EP, Happy As Can Be, which featured five tracks, was released...to be continued - audioculture

The Rendezvous Band "Gettin' There Is Half the Fun" 2000 - Live at the Magic Stick, Detroit

The surviving members of Sonic's Rendezvous Band (Scott Morgan, Gary Rasmussen, Scott "Rock Action" Asheton) paying tribute to Fred Smith's memory with Radio Birdman's Deniz Tek. - discogs
After the collapse of the MC5, Fred "Sonic" Smith formed Sonic's Rendezvous Band in 1975 with a potent lineup of Detroit-area musicians: Scott Morgan (formerly of the Rationals), Scott "Rock Action" Asheton (ex-Stooges), and Gary Rasmussen (of Motor City proto-punks the Up). SRB broke up in the early '80s, and Smith's death in 1994 seemingly scotched any plans of a reunion, but in the fall of 1999, the surviving members of Sonic's Rendezvous joined up with former Radio Birdman guitarist (and Australia's leading proponent of Detroit rock & roll) Deniz Tek for a special one-off show as the Rendezvous Band. Gettin' There Is Half the Fun is a warts-and-all live recording of that gig, and on disc this sounds like one of those great "you shoulda been there" experiences. Scott Morgan rarely gets his due as one of Detroit rock's most potent frontmen, and his fiery vocals and tight rhythm guitar work pull this band into fourth gear. Meanwhile, Rasmussen and Asheton are a solid, blisteringly powerful rhythm section, and Tek does a more than able job filling in for Fred Smith (no small accomplishment) while also serving up a revved-up cover of Radio Birdman's "New Race." Together, the band plays with the sweaty passion that's the equal of their best work, winding up with a furious eight-minute rendition of Sonic's Rendezvous Band's greatest song, "City Slang." Anyone who has never heard the SRB ought to start with their two posthumous albums, Sweet Nothing and City Slang, but if you've heard and enjoyed those sets -- or you're just looking for a solid dose of high-energy Detroit rock -- you ought to give this a listen pronto. - by Mark Deming

Cut Off Your Hands "Demos" 2008 (Mini CD)

Cut Off Your Hands are known for their brand of high-energy post-punk. Relentless touring saw them clock up countless frequent flyer miles and tear up stages alongside a who’s who of indie rock bands worldwide. The departure of vocalist Djeisan Suskov from Auckland band Nova Echo led the remaining members to form The Shaky Hands...
...Moving from his first role as guitarist, Nick Johnston picked up the microphone to front the group, with bassist Phillip Hadfield, drummer Brent Harris and guitarist Michael Ramirez. Suskov moved on to work at his father’s Revolver Studios in Waiuku, establishing himself as a successful producer/engineer and songwriter with bands Trees Climbing Trees and Cool Rainbows. Largely influenced by the sounds of popular late 70s and 80s post-punk bands such as The Smiths, Gang Of Four, Joy Division and The Cure, they debuted in 2006 with the six track, sub-15-minute Cut Off Your Hands EP, recorded in Harris' parents lounge. Lead single You And I received a generous amount of radio play in Australia via Triple J as well as community and independent radio stations around the country. Within six months of their inception the band were picked up by Speak N Spell Records, a label/management agency established by Melbourne-based New Zealander Dave Benge and two Sydney-based partners, David Shrimpton and Jonathan Wilson.
Benge also took the role as their worldwide manager, though the three partners all shared the role at times in different territories. Touring was a major part of the band’s initial burst onto the music scene and saw them constantly playing live venues on home soil and across the ditch, with frenetic live performances. Johnston’s wild man antics often saw him performing within the crowd.
Shortly after their formation the four-piece were forced to change their name due to legal pressures from a Portland, Oregon band with the same title. With an invitation to the South by South West (SXSW) music conference looming, they chose to go with the title from their debut EP. Johnston told NZ Musician magazine, "We knew all along something was going to happen but we didn't expect such drastic measures to be taken. We're disappointed, they weren't open to compromise at all. They wouldn't budge. So we just needed to make a quick decision."...to be continued - audioculture

Nine seconds of "what the hell are they doing with the damn piano" followed by one of the best musical wake up slaps to the face ever...
...That piano lulls a person, it does, sets them up, makes them think about leaving the dance floor, skipping this one, whatever it is, until the DJ comes back to his senses. That's the point where the guitars crash down on you, and beat kickstarts your soul. Date With A Vampyre will always remind me of the smell of promise in the air.

Hayley Westenra & Ennio Morricone "Paradiso" 2011

In early 2008, Westenra provided guest vocals for the Mike Oldfield album Music of the Spheres, performing the vocal on the track "On My Heart" and its reprise. Westenra and Oldfield performed "On My Heart" live on the British ITV daytime TV program The Alan Titchmarsh Show on 18 March 2008...
...On 1 October 2008, Westenra recorded solo vocals on the CD Different Voice, composed and conducted by Debbie Wiseman and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with narration by Stephen Fry and lyrics written by Don Black. On 30 November 2008, Westenra was presented by Elaine Paige with the Variety Club Showbiz Awards 2008 Classical Performer of the Year for raising money to help sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people.
In the spring and summer of 2010, Westenra began working with film composer Ennio Morricone for a collaboration on her album Paradiso. The album featured new songs written by Morricone, as well as some of his best known film compositions of the last 50 years. Westenra recorded the album with Morricone's orchestra in Rome during the summer 2010.
On 30 October 2010, Westenra staged a recital at the Shanghai Grand Theatre with international backing musicians in an East Asian concert tour. - wiki

Hayley Westenra "Celtic Treasures" 2007

Westenra's third international album, Treasure, was released on 26 February 2007 in the UK. All the songs on this CD were chosen by Westenra, who gave her record company "no say in the matter." She said, "I basically didn't let them in on what I was recording until the last minute so they had no choice. I didn't give them much room to disagree."..
...Tracks on this album include "E Pari Ra", "One Fine Day", "Let Me Lie", "Danny Boy", and "Abide with Me". Westenra co-wrote four of the fifteen tracks, and the album also features singer Humphrey Berney. The US/Australia/NZ edition followed in March under the name Celtic Treasure. Westenra dedicated the album to her grandmother, Shirley Ireland. Inside the sleeve of the British edition, she wrote:
"I come from a musical family, and one with a real sense of history. My forefathers were on the maiden voyage from Ireland to Christchurch, New Zealand in 1850 – there's even a commemoration plaque in Cathedral Square, Christchurch, which bears the name Westenra. My grandmother used to sit me on her knee and sing songs like Danny Boy from as early as I can remember. A singer herself in her earlier years, she has always been a never-ending source of songs. It's this legacy of music that she's been passing down to me since my childhood, and it's many of these beautiful old songs that I've explored here on my album."
On the day before St. Patrick's Day 2007, she performed as part of Celtic Woman for President George W. Bush at the White House.[33] She had plans to present the president with a petition to place a mandatory carbon cap on the United States.[34] The goal of the petition was compliance with the commitment made by President Bill Clinton in previous years to follow the Kyoto Protocol.
Also in 2007, Westenra's vocals were featured in the soundtracks of the movie Flood and the television series, Jekyll, composed by Debbie Wiseman, in the UK. In November 2007, Westenra successfully staged a Japan "Treasure" concert tour in Fukuoka, Sapporo, Tokyo, Sendai, Nagoya, Osaka, Yokohama, Hiroshima. - wiki

Swingorillas "Dick Suave" 1999

Swingorillas are a nine-piece swing band from Salt Lake City. The Swingorillas released their cd 'Dick Suave' in 1999. It received excellent reviews throughout the country. The Swingorillas' sound ranges from traditional 30s swing to an interesting blend of mambo, calypso, boogie woogie and a more modern swing sound...
...Tara Duff, the lead vocalist, hails from across the great ocean. She grew up in Peterborough, England and has since made the city of salt her home. Dale Lee, the band leader, composer, arranger and alto & bari saxophonist has also performed with Ike Willis & Chunga's Revenge, the Violent Femmes and Thirsty Alley. Dan Walker, the featured soloist on tenor saxophone, spent most of his playing days in Los Angeles but has also relocated to the angelic environment of Utah. The Swingorillas are a soulful, hard swinging band. All the band members are excellent improvisers and four of the men provide rich harmonies and occasional lead vocals to compliment Mz. Duff. On 5 September 2006, Westenra was named as one of the ten outstanding young people in the world by the Junior Chamber International, becoming the first New Zealander so honoured. On 13 November 2006, she participated in the dedication of the New Zealand War Memorial in London, performing "God Save the Queen" and "God Defend New Zealand", the national anthems of the UK and New Zealand. The Sonics "Fire & Ice II" - The Lost Tapes

This set comprises of the recordings made by "The Sonics" between 1966 and 1968 as they transitioned from a legendary garage punk band to a helmet-hair lounge act led by Jim Brady and not featuring any of the original band members [Save for the touring van]...
...It's really quite sad. This band sounds like they're trying but as long as they try to use the Sonics name, they just can't live up to it. There are a few interesting attempts at psychedelia like version 1 of "Anyway the Wind Blows" and some nice Yardbirds styled R&B ("Lost Love") that harkens back to their first Jerden recordings. Those two tracks are the only two that feature Gerry Roslie and comprised the last single they released with him in the band but his vocal performance on both just ain't right. He's actually crooning. What the hell. Besides that there are some rather crappy late 60s pop moments and a few redeeming rock moments like "Good Hard Rock" which is just what it says on the tin and there's no singing so you can just pretend it's old times. "Wake Me, Shake Me" features Jim Brady on vocals but it's not too bad of a rock song, kinda funky. Those mentioned are the only good songs on the album, the rest is mediocre.

"Frolic Diner" Vol 6

Great idea for a compilation series - sleazy, cheesy, food-based tunes from the golden age of novelty rockin' - the 1950s and 1960s.
Someone had a good record collection to bring all of these fine tunes together in one place. Some of them stretch the theme a little bit (Beavershot?!) but basically this is a glorious series of glutinous goodies with virtually any foodstuff you care to name given righteous attention across several different volumes on vinyl and CD (the vinyl part VI and CD Part 4 are identical - same tracklisting and sleeve art - but numbered differently for no doubt very good reasons, not just ineptitude I'm sure).
Lots of calorie-packed crazy ditties rejoicing in the delights of Garlic Bread, Chop Suey, Mashed Potatoes, Mustard, Fried Eggs, Dog Food (!) and so on... plus a bunch of tracks in the booze dept too like Apple Cider, Mashin' Grapes, Screwdriver, Fire Water etc
Actually - as the series wears on the theme slips a bit here and there with the food/drink connection a bit hard to spot - but it really doesn't matter as all of this stuff is just damn good fun. Great for sophisticated dinner parties, picnics, al fresco feasting, bar-b-qs, banquets, hog roasts, burger runs, home delivery pizza nights in, curry house rockin' ... even opening a humble bag of crisps would benefit from a few tracks from Frolic Diner playing in the background.
