This one is a surprise packet. On hearing it in the mid-eighties I thought their previous album, 'Gravity Talks' was a much better effort. Yet after a decade of it sitting in my record collection, I played it again and was knocked over by the honesty, consistency and strength of the music contained within.
This album is a road album and its a drinking album. Reflections of a band whose existence is filled with playing rock in loser bars in a seemy mid-western USA. Stories from a band walking the knife's edge, good guys with the potential to snap apart at anytime. Searchers for the eternal whatsit, lost souls drifting through life desperately trying to cling onto some kind of truth and never finding it.
From Green on Red's early rantings which seemed drugged and mysterious, this album attempts to focus on the more essential questions that face thirty something year olds. I love the photo on the back cover showing Dan Stuart staring into the flames of a fire (fires being a direct link to the unconscious). That's the type of emotion he conveyed in his songs. Souls struggling against all the bullshit that life deals them yet never giving up hope and never stopping to dream about other possibilities. Much of side two is filled with images of death, loveless souls and lonesome drifters so it's obvious that Stuart was barely hanging in there, but the man is a survivor or so he'd like us to believe! The band never sounded better and the thinness of production on their earlier album has been sorted out. That countrified guitar twang and desert like drawl of Stuarts' vocals add up to a very convincing album that deserves alot more credit than it received at the time of its' release. This was the high point of their career and its' a real shame that Green on Reds' recorded output went into a terminal spiral after the release of this great record. Stiv Bators "Disconnected" 1980

Originally released in 1980, Stiv Bators' first solo album was re-released in 1993 by Bomp, which added eight extra tracks not available on the original version (all recorded live at the Berkeley Square in May of 1980). Like his other Bomp solo release, the L.A., L.A. compilation, the music is more similar to '60s power pop than the vicious punk rock that Bators was originally known for as a member of the Dead Boys. - Review by Greg Prat
Bators' garage-inspired power-pop is clearly the music nearest and dearest to his heart. On preceding singles and demos Bators had covered obscure '60s classics such as The Choir's "It's Cold Outside" and The Glories' "I Stand Accused," and that sensibility melds perfectly with the band's originals, combining a dash of the Dead Boys' snotty punk energy with the power-pop sounds of late '70s bands like The Plimsouls. There are hints of New Wave, but the back-to-basics production (thanks to then-rookie Thom Wilson) and arrangements keep this from sounding dated; there's also some foreshadowing of the Lords sound (who themselves would look back with a cover of "Question of Temperature"), but, again, the roots are firmly in the '60s. In addition to songs from Bators and band members Frank Secich, George Cabaniss and David Quinton, the album includes a rousing cover of The Electric Prunes' "Too Much To Dream Last Night" and a leering live take of The Syndicate of Sounds' "Little Girl." The Lords' fame and Dead Boys' infamy may have obscured the brilliance of Bators' middle-period garage pop, but thanks to Bomp! it's here for you to hear. - amazon

The Clique "Vanbrugh Park" 2003

For 80s mod revivalists who previously released a handful of singles (including the hit, 'Reggie') & the album, 'Self Preservation Society'. Recorded with the help of Acid Jazz Records & James Taylor Quartet's frontman, they laid down these stunning British mod/R&B/beat tracks in 1986-87.
Somewhere between the demise of The Prisoners and the heyday of Acid Jazz emerged The Clique, a band who managed to both breathe life into the international Mod scene just as they were setting the stage to make it difficult again by influencing a number of 3rd rate imitators. Of course, it would then take at least another 5 years following The Cliques own split to rid ourselves of the majority of these bands. But at long last, Detour have finally released the fabled “Acid Jazz Years” session, now with the improved name of “Vanbrugh Park”.
During a couple of fateful days in “late 86 or early 87” according to the liner notes, Eddie Piller took a young band playing a new breed of big beat British R&B channeling The Shadows of Knight as much as The Birds. Many of you will recognize at least four of these songs from the infamous “Early Days” EP. And from that EP we know that The Clique were always quite good as a straight r&b/mod group with a bluesy edge. Added to the mix was the already over-achieving James Taylor – who was feeling the success of his own post-Prisoners band and a Herbie Hancock cover called “Blow Up”. Maybe a couple of you know that one?
The songs themselves are quite strong, with well chosen covers and promising originals. It’s somewhat of a shame that this incarnation of The Clique never properly gelled, as they played in quite a different manor than we know from the “Self Preservation Society” album. Of course as The Clique evolved, so did their sound and the strength of their original material. For sheer authenticity, the material recorded for “Vanbrugh Park” would never had stood up to the quality of similar music being put out by The Mystreated around the same time but it’s difficult to deny the infectiousness of tracks like “Ground Ginger”, the cover of “Sookie Sookie” (and it’s instrumental counterpart, “Wormin”), “Gonna Get Me Somebody” and “Crying Days”, which could have been an unforgettable classic with a singer who wasn’t trying to impersonate Jim Sohns.
That reminds me. There are unmistakable weaknesses found within some of this material. In addition to the Jimmy Sohns bit mentioned above, “You’d Better Stop” isn’t a particularly strong track, and it must be said that for all that James Taylor adds to this recording, he really does overplay the band on “Sookie Sookie” and also a bit on “Crying Days”. However, it’s not worth nitpicking when “Vanbrugh Park” is a great look into the early days of The Clique and isn’t lacking in good music by any stretch. A direct comparison to “Self-Preservation Society” would be inappropriate, as the style of “Vanbrugh Park” really is more of a rhythm & blues affair than the freakbeat onslaught we have become accustomed to through The Clique’s later records. One might even go so far as to suggest that there are a few of you out there who didn’t like The Clique’s “Detour Years”, who might find quit a bit more enjoyment from “The Acid Jazz Years”. © Brian Poust 2003 - 2009 [Published 29 May 2003]

"The Mood Mosaic" Vol 11 Feelin' Funky

Mood Mosaic, Volume 11: Feelin' Funky! is one hour, two minutes and forty-nine seconds long and was released on June 12, 2007...
...The album is a mixture of funk, jazz, soul, disco, African and Caribbean music. I went into allmusic.com and the bulk of the artists are like one hit wonders or less. For the novice like me, only Bill Cosby and Ike Turner are the only two artists that I have heard of on this album. For the die hard music fan of this type of music, then you may know more of the artists on the CD. I bought it just to try something new to listen to. Mood Mosaic, Volume 11: Feelin' Funky! gets a B+ for the music on it.

Green On Red "Gravity Talks" 1983

This is considered to be in the same musical movement as The Bangles? I'm confused. Anyway, by the second listen, I was sold. This album is NYC-style punk meets southern jangle rock. The raw vocals and organ patterns are occasionally grating but more often emotionally intense. - phillybrarian
Green on Red's tinge of psychedelia was provided by Chris Cacavas' organ. But already, the band had traded in most psychedelic references for an Americana influence, along the lines of John Fogerty spiked with Roky Erickson. Completists might find they need Gravity Talks, but better work comes on the band's next record, Gas Food Lodging. - Review by Denise Sullivan

The Lords at their zenith. The last IRS record by the band, it moves more into heavy metal figures sonically and psuedo satanist imagery lyrically. This one is most like the new 2003 incarnation of the band fronted by StevenMarque; and you can really see Stiv's influence on him on tracks like KISS OF DEATH, DO WHAT THOU WILT and SEDUCER. Like any other LORDS album, a meaningful masterpiece and certainly significant theosophically, against the backdrop of most 80's vibrant/vapid offerings. - from amazon

Hoodoo Gurus "Chevron Hotel" Sydney, Australia, July 18, 1984 - Radio Broadcast

James Baker's last show with the band. Recorded in the Silver Spade Room at the Chevron Hotel, Sydney. Broadcast as part of the "Impossible Music Festival" May 27, 2007 on Triple J FM. Soundboard Recording Concert CD.
In the early 1980s college radio dominated the rock industry. A loose network of campus stations across the US was breaking guitar rock from the likes of R.E.M. and The Replacements into the charts. This style of aggressive post-punk rock suited many Australian bands of the time. The Hoodoo Gurus, Died Pretty, The Church and The Celibate Rifles all found welcome on the college circuit. The Hoodoo Gurus in particular spent some years playing US campuses.
By the time they recorded the first album, Stoneage Romeos, Dave Faulkner had restructured the Gurus from a party band to a tight, powerful rock machine with the addition of guitarist Brad Shepherd and bassist Clyde Bramley whilst drummer James Baker was soon replaced by Mark Kingsmill. With their roots still firmly in the style of garage punk rock, Faulkner expanded his palette as a songwriter to pen a number of hit songs. Unlike so many of his contemporaries, Faulkner had no interest 4 in an inner-city elitism and he led the Gurus out to the suburbs on punishing tours. DOGS "Short, Fast & Tight" 2001 - disc 2

Enregistré à Rouen, Cherbourg, Grenoble et Guingamp entre 1997 et 2000, « Short, fast & tight » est le premier véritable album live des Dogs. Il regroupe 29 titres, pour plus de 90 minutes de live endiablé. Emmenés par la guitare et la voix de Dominique Laboubée, leader charismatique, chaque chanson est un concentré d'énergie à l'état pur. Cet album constitue un véritable hymne au rock: authentique, sans fioritures inutiles, allant droit au but. A écouter sans modération...
...J'ai du assister à l'hiver 2002 à l'un des derniers concerts des Dogs en France, quelques mois avant que Dominique Laboubée ne passe l'arme à gauche lors de la tournée US entamée par le groupe, un décès aussi soudain que malheureux et auquel le combo ne survivra pas. On les aimait bien pourtant ces toutous là, malgré le drôle d'accent anglais de leur patron. Ils avaient plus de classe que mes voisins et assuraient contre vents et marées depuis plus de 20 ans avec la foi du charbonnier des prestations exemplaires, pleines d'intensité.
Ils ne sont pas non plus nombreux les groupes français à avoir enregistré des disques Live capables de soutenir sans rougir la comparaison avec leurs homologues anglo-saxons. Ces gars là aimaient jouer du rock, adoraient partager leur passion avec leur public et ça s'entendait . Ce Live possède un son excellent et commence sur les chapeaux de roue avec le survolté "Death Lane". Au programme, on trouve les classiques du groupe " Professionnal Liar" , "Little Johnny Jet" , "the Most Forgotten French Boy", "too much class for the neighbourhood"....et quelques reprises "one way ticket" des Nerves-Plimsouls, "Fortune Teller" des Stones dans une version proche de celle de 999, "she's got everything" des Kinks, "she's a wind up" de Dr Feelgood ou "96 Tears" de ? & the Mystérians....
Peut-être mon disque préféré du groupe....Paru en 2001, soit peu de temps avant le drame, on mesure à son écoute combien il aurait été dommage qu'un tel groupe de scène ne laisse pas de témoignage enregistré de ses prestations, car on rappellera ici que "shout", sorti en 1985 était un faux Live, le public ayant été rajouté en studio, dans la grande tradition des disques Live des sixties.

Green On Red "Down There" 1982

I have probably listened to the opening track “Death and Angels” a hundred times this past week. My last.fm indicates it’s only been 35 times, but the hyperbole feels fitting, because the song has all but pervaded my thoughts. I’m enamored with it, musically but also lyrically, which rarely is the case with me personally...
...I found Green on Red through a whole bunch of similar / adjacent bands I’ve been really into lately as part of my continued interest in scratching the R.E.M. surface of 80’s college rock and digging deeper - The Dream Syndicate, Game Theory, Let’s Active. The first track of theirs that really grabbed me was “Gas Food Lodging” - there’s another enthusiastic rave for another time - but “Death and Angels” stopped me dead in my tracks upon first listen.

I can’t speak from any sort of generational experience but man - was it not ballsy of them to have put these lyrics out in a time and a place and a scene where most of their peers were seemingly so jaded and detached? They’re delivered sincerely, without a hint of snark, as is the music, lo-fi and slightly shaggy but earnest - they really believe in this. Just listen to Dan Stuart’s emphatic “I swear”s over his bandmates’ “aah-aahs”; listen to the noodly keyboards that, when paired with the punky jangly thing going on, evoke that very specific Southwestern strain of druggy art school psychedelia that’s at the heart of a lot of the best of the era. I just adore this track.
Nothing else on the EP quite reaches the anthemic greatness of “Death and Angels” but that’s not to say the other tracks aren’t wonderful in their own right - “Illustrated Crawling” and “Aspirin” run contrary to the twinkly-eyed optimism of the opener and take you down a vastly different path, one of jerky keyboard hooks and macabre bonfire devil-encounter horror stories and riffs that snarl. “Black Night” makes me anxious in the best way that a song can make a person anxious. It sounds like a drive down a twisty, snaking road through a thick forest at 3AM - the road’s not lit by any streetlights and both of my headlights are broken, leaving me to rely entirely on what blotches of darkness seem less dark than others, and the whole time I’m thinking about being pulled over by a cop or about hitting a telephone pole or about hitting a deer or a raccoon or about running over some nails placed on the road by some forest hermit murderer who wants to hack me up and about how I just want to get home. Plan 9 "Live - I've Just Killed A Man I Don't Want To See Any Meat" 1985

I've Just Killed a Man is a steamy live album recorded as a six-piece in Boston, Washington, DC, New Haven and back home in Providence. A trio of ace covers, including the MC5's "Looking at You," and a guest appearance by head Lyre Jeff Conolly on "I'm Gone" add extra excitement to the spirited fun.
Featuring four guitars and a sound straight from those psychedelic '60s, Rhode Island's Plan 9 dealt with little except period covers on their first album, 1982's Frustration. The group added a batch of originals on Dealing With the Dead, and spent the next two albums compiling early singles (Plan 9) and documenting their live show (I've Just Killed a Man, I Don't Want to See Any Meat). Plan 9 began to add remnants of hard rock with 1985's Keep Your Cool & Read the Rules, but after switching to Enigma, the group stripped its '60s influences and began sounding like a plain old rock band. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

The Mood Mosaic Volume 10 - Retro Active is fifty-eight minutes and thirteen seconds and was released on August 3, 2007. The music is in the style of pop, rock, and jazz. Fourteen of the eighteen songs are instrumental and only Donovan, Classic IV, Letta Mblulu do any singing. George Semper song Shortin Bread you hear a female singing la, la, la and nothing else. Only one song made the US Billboard charts; if the rest of the songs topped in other countries I could not find any information. Unlike the other Mood Mosaic series this one was somewhat of a disappointment; what it is I am unable to put in words but something was missing from this album. It's a one-hour concert from the legendary Marquee Club in merry olde London. It's a great performance from the original Lords lineup and a must have for any fan of the band. Stiv looks utterly wasted but turns in a great performance, the gum was a nice touch. The rest of the band seems focused and into it. The Lords wrote some really good songs and most of them are here. Enregistré à Rouen, Cherbourg, Grenoble et Guingamp entre 1997 et 2000, « Short, fast & tight » est le premier véritable album live des Dogs. Il regroupe 29 titres, pour plus de 90 minutes de live endiablé. Emmenés par la guitare et la voix de Dominique Laboubée, leader charismatique, chaque chanson est un concentré d'énergie à l'état pur. Cet album constitue un véritable hymne au rock: authentique, sans fioritures inutiles, allant droit au but. A écouter sans modération...
J'ai du assister à l'hiver 2002 à l'un des derniers concerts des Dogs en France, quelques mois avant que Dominique Laboubée ne passe l'arme à gauche lors de la tournée US entamée par le groupe, un décès aussi soudain que malheureux et auquel le combo ne survivra pas. On les aimait bien pourtant ces toutous là, malgré le drôle d'accent anglais de leur patron. Ils avaient plus de classe que mes voisins et assuraient contre vents et marées depuis plus de 20 ans avec la foi du charbonnier des prestations exemplaires, pleines d'intensité.
Ils ne sont pas non plus nombreux les groupes français à avoir enregistré des disques Live capables de soutenir sans rougir la comparaison avec leurs homologues anglo-saxons. Plan 9 was cool in 1979, enough to attract the attention of guitar punks Tom Champlin, & Eric Vandelin. The deal then was that if they helped us move out to the RED HOUSE they could join the jam. And while getting stupid was the No.1 priority, ultimately they began our wall-of-guitar sound, which had expanded to 3 guitars, all in tune on occasion. - from their website
Deb found a VOX Super Continental organ at a yard sale. Evan Williams, currently Medicine Ball co-creator and guitar generator, needed a place to live, had a car and a Gibson SG, left handed that he covered with illustrations that were really good, came in one night. We jammed on Dirty Water by the Standells for an hour. He realized the common denominator in our demos, silly love songs as they were, Gotta Move, Frustration, I Can Only Give You Everything, cool music so…we became the "4 guitar 9 member psychedelic experience" started to practice more…oh and I almost forgot about Mikey RIPAMAN who got a Burns guitar for the occasion, had played with us in Newport early on and looked like Eddie of Flo &, and was simply a funny funny man. The idea became apparent to us that we should be Plan 9, to honor the absurdity of the then little known sci-fi debacle, to which we felt akin, P-9 from Outer Space, the one they will certainly remember Ed Wood for.
Enter the texas punk 45 auctions and monumental trades for really great records. We were finding a lot of local stuff too, like the OTHERS Can't stand This Love Goodbye, Buzzards, NightRockers, and East Coast Surf stuff, along with the Trod Nossel records from Connecticut…and Greg Shaw wanted to get some of them, and oh btw Greg, are you looking for bands.

"The Mood Mosaic" Vol 9 The Sound Bullett

After covering a variety of lounge styles over eight previous volumes, the Mood Mosaic compilation series returned to the "cop show music" style explored on Mood Mosaic, Vol. 2: Barnie's Grooves. As a result, Mood Mosaic, Vol. 9: The Sound Bullett dishes out a strong series of tracks with a strong emphasis on soulful grooves and frenetic jazz rhythms...
...Of course, plenty of film and television themes are present: "Ironside" by Quincy Jones mixes the composer's trademark orchestral jazz with some whooping synthesizer sounds and Rudy Ray Moore & Soul Rebellion Orchestra's "Mayor's Get Away" is a gritty slice of ghetto funk driven by cymbal-heavy drum work and percolating clavinet riffs. There are also some covers of film themes by easy listening groups: the London Royal Orchestra turns in an instrumental rendition of "The Man With the Golden Gun" that bolsters its jazzy, brass-heavy attack with some snarling fuzz guitar and John Schroeder turns in a particularly fierce rendition of "Blowin' Your Mind" (originally from Shaft's Big Score) that mixes orchestral funk with explosive brass arrangements and tight wah-wah guitar riffs. There are also some soul tunes that aren't soundtrack cuts but fit in just fine thanks to their funky style: "Broasted or Fried" by Saint Vincent Latinaires is a gritty instrumental that layers swinging horns over a huge, echoed percussive backdrop and General Crook's "What Time It Is" is a snarling funk rock track with social commentary lyrics in the vein of the Temptations' message-oriented hits. The Hoodoo Gurus continued to be a popular live act through the 1980's and '90's. Dave Faulkner became a production partner in Trafalgar Records and made some interesting records with a variety of artists. Faulkner also branched out into film scores.

Lighthouse "Best Of Lighthouse" 1974

Drummer Skip Prokop formed Lighthouse in 1968 and began adding members soon after: guitarist Ralph Cole (whom Prokop had played with in the Paupers), Grant Fullerton, Pinky Dauvin, saxophonist Howard Shore, cellist Dick Armin, violinist Don DiNovo, keyboard player Paul Hoffert, saxophonist Keith Jollimore, vocalist Bob McBride, trumpeter Peter Pantaluk, trombonist Larry Smith, and bassist Louis Yackniw...
...The band released two albums on RCA in 1969 and played at the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals and the Isle of Wight Festival, though they had turned down Woodstock. In late 1970, RCA released Lighthouse's third album, Peacing It All Together, then dropped the band, who then signed to GRT. 1971 brought One Fine Morning and Thoughts of Movin' On, and in 1972, the group released Lighthouse Live! and Sunny Days. The band lost members, beginning in 1973 when Paul Hoffert left, followed by Bob McBride and Skip Prokop in 1974; the group eventually disbanded in 1976. - by John Bush
