ROY HEAD & THE TRAITS "Treat Me Right" 1965

Actually a country and rock vocalist rather than an R&B star, Roy Head nevertheless cut one of the great pieces of up-tempo soul in the mid-'60s……"Treat Her Right" on Back Beat made it to number two on the R&B charts and number two pop, and the fact that Head was white was soft-pedaled in R&B circles while the song made its way up the charts. That performance alone was enough to qualify Head as one of the finest blue-eyed soul singers of the 1960s. But in fact, Roy was one of the most versatile stylists of the era, capable of hard R&B/rock tunes (even cutting material with a pre-fame Johnny Winter on backup guitar); mournful, soul-tinged country; and straight R&B and blues covers. King Uszniewicz & His Uszniewicztones "Teenage Dance Party With..." 1989

I first saw 'em in 1973 playing on a Thrusday night to nobody at this grimy little bowling alley in a nasty section of Detroit. Growing up in the Motor City, I had heard a ton of weekend warrior-type garage bands, but NEVER had I been exposed to a combo that sounded quite like KING USZNIEWICZ (pronounced 'You-Sneb-Bitch') & THE USZNIEWICZTONES: lame, out-of-tune vocals (delivered with 3rd-rate Elvis imitator enthusiasm by tenor saxophonist / band-leader Ernie "King" Uszniewicz, occasionally "helped" by lead guitarist "Logjam Lurch" Patterson, who was only worse), horrid two and three note sax & guitar solos, flagrant disregard for tempo or even remotely keeping their instruments in tune, with every song in their repertoire being playined in the same monotonous key of E natural…...Either these guys were drunk, stoned, both & just didn't care or they were just "having a bad night" or - could it be? - THEY REALLY SOUNDED LIKE THIS!! After three and a half sets' exposure to them, I came to the opinion that yes, they really DID sound like that and now I was bound and determined to record them, for reasons that still remain unclear to me at this time.
The sessions, such as they were, cut in a garage off & on between 1973 & 1976, were recorded on crude equipment as quickly as possible. One 45, "Surfin' School"/"Cry On My Shoulder" was issued on my 1-shot label with two other 45 releases scheduled before the label folded in 1979. Meanwhile, the U-TONES (as their bass drum front read; The "Uszniewicztones" appellation came from King U's insistence when the first single was about to be issued in 1974) still played their 5-night-a-week stand at the bowling alley, happy to have a record on the jukebox with yours truly just as ahappy to have captured some of their drunken ineptitude on vinyl for posterity.
As the various sessions were held usually once a year, members started floating through the ranks, bringing a new batch of U-Tones to almost every session to stumble through their parts with Kung U's vocals & tenor sax and his guitarman Lurch still giving their tunes that patented "You-Sneb-Bitch" sound. At one point or another the Uszniewicztones featured a guy named Slimy Fred Frye on guitar, Roberto Naileye on drums, Jazzbo Ackley on bass, Billy Lee Small on piano, a couple of guitar manglers named P.Dog & "14", and some other losers whose names are probably best lost to the mists of time.
I lost track of them somewhere around '79. They had lost their regular gig at the bowling alley when it burned down and no one seemed to know where or if they were wtill playing. All efforts to track down Ernie Uszniewicz at his day job (wrapping prodce at the IGA) were in vain as King U had quit his job and moved out of the sate with no forwarding address. It's an old story...
So who says the 70s were a musical wasteland? As I pull out these old, grimy tapes & give them a listen putting this LP together, a flood of memories bit me as the sound pours out of the speakers, with one thought fixed dead-center in my mind... KING USZNIEWICZ & HIS USZNIEWICZTONES were, undoubtedly, THE WORST BAND I EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE. See if you don't agree. Rock 'n' Roll may never sound like this again.. Lucky You. ~ CUB KODALine Up:

Jay Clarkson & Breathing Cage "Misericord" 1991

Breathing Cage was Clarkson's fourth project and brought together acclaimed drummer Gary Sullivan (Jean Paul Sartre Experience, Stereo Bus, Solid Gold Hell, Dimmer), guitarist Greg Malcolm and Michael Kime from her previous band The Expendables. In 1989, the group famously won the much coveted Rheineck Rock Award, a significant financial prize first won by Headless Chickens in 1987. With the proceeds of the award, the band recorded Misericord which was released in 1991 by Tall Poppy Records…...In anticipation of the show on Friday, we jumped at the chance to showcase some material from the album as well as get some insight from Clarkson on the songs. 1. 'Fly On The Wall'
The Misericord album was recorded 89/90, most the songs having been written two or three years prior. The lyrics for 'Fly On The Wall' were actually a modified version of a poem I had written round '85. When writing a song if the words come first for me they virtually provide the structure - and of course the mood. Greg Malcolm's various guitar tracks - from the saw-like sound of the slide to the fingernails on the blackboard scraping are brilliant - the guy's a genius!
2. 'Memory Lane'
At gigs people inevitably would come up afterwards to say how much they loved this. It 's quite a sentimental song, I guess, but I reckon it avoids being cheesy. There's a simplicity about it that continues to ring true.
3. 'Man With No Desire'
This song has been on many Flying Nun compilations including the more recent box-set. On the Misericord album Breathing Cage does a different take to the They Were Expendable 1984 recording. I love both versions. It's a tale about a man who's basically dysfunctional and it's broody as hell. It was recently performed by the Dunedin Symphonia with Anna Leese singing it operastyle! It was fantastic.
4. 'Lucille'
I often perform this solo but have to miss out the middle instrumental section so it's going to be great to play it again with the band. On this Misericord track Graeme Humphries (Abel Tasmans) provides superb piano, giving it one of my favourite recorded endings. The lyrics speak for themselves.
5. 'You and Me and the Old Hill'
This is not on the Misericord album but was a Flying Nun single recorded by the same line-up of Breathing Cage, this time at the Incubator studio not Airforce. Michael Kime's bass and Gary Sullivan's drumming work so beautifully together. I love this song. Greg's guitar adds the finishing wind-swept touch. It's a windswept song!

One of the finest and most influential rhythm & blues acts of the '50s, the "5" Royales began their career as a gospel group called the Royal Sons Quintet before crossing over to secular music in 1952…...The "5" Royales initially recorded for Apollo Records, where they scored hits like "Baby Don't Do It" and "Laundromat Blues," but they enjoyed greater success when they signed with King Records in 1954 and stormed the R&B charts with tunes like "Monkey Hips and Rice," "Think" (later covered by James Brown and Aretha Franklin), and "Dedicated to the One I Love" (which both the Shirelles and the Mamas & the Papas took to the upper reaches of the pop charts). Louis Tillett's first band, the Wet Taxis, commenced life as an experimental outfit in the manner of fellow Sydneysiders Severed Heads and Scattered Order before taking on a tougher 1960s-influenced direction…..Their classic debut single on the Hot label, ‘C’mon’ (1984), boasted an authentic garage / R&B sound heavily influenced by such American garage / punk bands as the
Moving Sidewalks, We the People and the Chocolate Watchband plus legendary Australian group the Atlantics (who originally issued the song as ‘Come On’ in 1967). Alongside the likes of Died Pretty, the Celibate Rifles, the Lime Spiders, the New Christs, the Hoodoo Gurus and the Eastern Dark, the Wet Taxis came to epitomise the Australian garage rock sound and aesthetic of the 1980s. The Greenberry Woods "Big Money Item" 1995

The Greenberry Woods' instrumentation and yearning vocal style tend to the emotionally manipulative, heart-on-sleeve side, but lyrics often rise above the vacuous boy-girl stuff that defines the genre…..."Love Songs" surveys the cliched landscape with a sly, knowing eye while working completely within the musical formula. At 18 tracks, most hovering under the three-minute mark, Big Money Item serves up a dizzying over-abundance of sugary riches. While some selections remain lightweight trifles, enough substantial moments overflow the cone to coat the listener in captivating sticky goo. "Invisible Threads" combines sudden gear shifts with a phased, baroque pop underpinning. There's the stately soft-psych of "Parachute," and a dew-eyed tip of the hat to Crowded House balladry in "For You." "Nervous" pumps up the fuzz for some garage-y power-pop while "Go Without You" breaks into Bay City Roller handclaps. "Oh Janine"'s soaring chorus recalls both The Beach Boys and Eric Carmen's Raspberries. Even at its most superficial and derivative and unapologetically nerdy, Big Money Item is just so chock full of fatal hooks that...well...life almost starts to feel that fresh and innocent again. With an updating of the pop sounds championed by the Beatles and the Byrds, Greenberry Woods add their own personality to the mix and come up with Rapple Dapple…...All fans of pop music will find something to fall in love with here. "Trampoline" and "Sentimental Role" are very Beatleish, while "#37 (Feels So Strange)" is right out the glory days of the Byrds, but by all means, check out the rest of the tracks, because each one has a charm all its own. The Sneetches "The Sneetches 1985-1991" 1992

The Sneetches were an indie pop/power pop band formed in San Francisco, California in 1985, who released several albums before splitting up in the mid-1990s. The band was described by Trouser Press as "one of the most tasteful, consistently tuneful pop bands on the American scene". In 2017 All Music described the Sneetches as "one of the best classic guitar pop bands in the late '80s/early '90s."The initial line-up was Mike Levy (vocals, bass) and Matt Carges (guitar) adding English drummer Daniel Swan, formerly of The Cortinas by 1986. The band showed influences from the likes of The Zombies, The Left Banke and The Easybeats, all of whom had tracks covered by The Sneetches. They signed to the London-based Kaleidoscope Sound label, and debuted in 1987 with "Only For a Moment", followed by the mini-album Lights Out! With The Sneetches. They were then signed by Creation Records in the UK and Alias Records in the United States, who issued the band's debut full-length album, Sometimes That's All We Have, in 1989, described by Allmusic as "a masterful album highly recommended to all fans of the style". Levy switched to guitar with the recruitment of former Sting-Ray Alejandro "Alec" Palao in 1988. Slow followed on Alias in 1990, the band then moving on to the Bus Stop label for three singles between 1991 and 1993, later compiled on the Think Again compilation.
In 1993, the band recorded a mini-album with Chris Wilson of The Flamin' Groovies, and recorded a final album, Blow Out the Sun, in 1994, before splitting up. A posthumous mini-set, Starfucker, comprising demo recordings of tracks that were not included on Blow Out the Sun, was released by Bus Stop in 1995. Music die-hards Graeme Regan and Martin Jennings met each other while working in the King's Cross (Sydney) store Didgeridoo Records in 1982. The pair started Hot Distributions that year and in 1983, their new label Hot Records released The Celibate Rifles' first album on April Fool's Day…...Wanting to display an eclectic taste in music, the label released The Benders' album the following week and went on to be home to artists such as The Triffids. The Barbwires are the ultimate surf band, performing multi-layered guitar driven rock n roll.Swedish surf trio the Barbwires’ new album Searider is one of the most significant albums in the history of surf music. It is certainly the most ambitious work in surf music in decades. In Love With These Times is a compilation of previously released songs by artists on New Zealand based Flying Nun Records.SOME CURIOUS FACTS:

Shayne Carter was often used by Flying Nun for his secretarial abilities because he could type.

The police once ransacked the Flying Nun’s Christchurch office looking for hashish.

Flying Nun released a live album from The Fall only to have it withdrawn because it was done on a very loose verbal agreement between Mark E Smith and Chris Knox.

1988 WEA paid a $50,000 advance for a pressing and distribution deal. Flying Nun accepted. Unheard of!

In 1989 Melody Maker reviewed the Flying Nun compilation ‘In Love With These Times’ with the line, ‘Fall for it, rise with it. And kiss a cloud along the way.’

Roger has been diagnosed as manic depressive – something that in retrospect he accepts, ‘…probably contributed to the development of the label’.

In 2009 Roger and some other supporters, notably including Neil and Sharon Finn, re-acquired the label from Warner Music. ‘It seemed like the right thing to do’. He presently owns 7.9%

The Barbwires "Sounds Like Trouble!" 2001

Superb Surf instrumentals infused with rockabilly rhythms. The Barbwires are one of the best Surf instrumental bands of recent years. Lots of variety and plenty of power and energy - Sounds Like Trouble is highly recommended. - raucousrecordsIn the Summer of 1997 the Barbwires released their first 7" on their own label KOOK RECORDS. Before that, the band had recorded a demo (Produced by Lars Kjellén, The Daytonas ) and made a couple of local shows. After the release of their debut EP and a lot of interest in Swedish media. The EP was distributed by the bandmembers only in Sweden and in the US. After an excellent review in Surf Music Usa (Robert Dalley) the knowledge of the band resulted in many overseas orders. "Swingin' From The Trees" - A Sydney Compilation 1987

...just a bunch of monkeys swingin up in trees shittin in the woods...Kind of funny a Melbourne label doing a Sydney compilation, but they've done a solid job of it, so there's no point complaining! In fact, this is only one of two excellent Augogo samplers out recently. The fact that this record really doesn't have a lot of first string bands on it doesn't make it a poor compilation; it just shows off how good things are down under. Leading off are Naked Lunch, with a track from their new Things Grow mini-lp; it's a slab of tasty Hitmen style rock (as you'd expect given the presence of guiding light and former Hitman/New Christ Tony Robertson). Not the powerhouse of their first 45, but a good one nonetheless. Next up are Mushroom Planet, a sort of poor man's Celibate Rifles, with a live track recorded before they split in 1986 that has their usual driven playing but also as usual isn't such a sharp piece of songwriting. After a generic punk track by the Sweet Ride come 3 straight winners to close side one; a moody track by Spectres Revenge called "I Told No Lies", the always unstable Psychotic Turnbuckles with a nifty rant called "Mr. Zeppelin Man" complete with lots of wah-wah leads layered over distorted power chords, and finally, the massive Mothers with a really great entry, "Intersection" which has a frantic lead that builds and builds through the song and some great yells from Fiona, a women who is destined to become one of the alltime great female rock singers (screechers?) in my book if she sticks with it.
Side two starts with the moderately paced "Don't Leave Me" by the Conspirators, a Detroit rock styled outfit. This leads into the Eastern Dark's "Stay Alone", a song that was previously only available (in a different version) on a Waterfront night giveaway that's now rare as hell. Despite the undeniable greatness of the Eastern Dark's other stuff, this one doesn't really hold up too well...it doesn't have the guitar-pop mania atmosphere of their other (essential) records.
The next cut quickly clears away the disappointment; it's a great blast called "Mental Blank" by Rocks, a band that has been around Sydney since 1978 yet up to this point have only had one 6 track ep and a couple other compilation tracks. Having seen them live opening for the Hard-ons I can vouch for the fact that they are serious contenders in the field of two-chords-and-a-pile-of-dust punk, and this song backs me up 100%. An mini-lp by these guys is due soon...might even end up reviewed this issue, so look for it!
Closing are Hoi Polloi, No Man's Land and the Space Juniors, none of which do anything terribly inspiring, although the latter's "Skating Down the Boulevard" has a good punk feel that shows some promise. All told, the lp is better than 50% good stuff, which is an impressive feat for any sampler. Handshakes all around!traxfromwax:

"Shock Theatre" EP 2008Shock Theatre is a re-mastered version of the band’s first EP, originally posted for download in October, 2007. It was later discontinued but, after the release of Hideous Sexy, the band was hit with requests to make their freshman effort again available to the public.

“Shock Theatre was recorded when we were still trying to find our sound,” said guitarist Simon McCorkindale. “We had some problems with it and wanted to tinker a little with the sound before making it available again.” 

Most of those changes were minor adjustments to the mix. During the re-mixing process, though, the band decided to record new vocals for the cover of Rob Zombie’s “House of a Thousand Corpses,” turning it into a duet between singer Mark Wood and bassist Miss Wyckedevil Jones. 

When the band finished its self-titled LP, they returned to the studio and recorded seven new songs in a week. Titled “Bride of Shock Theatre,” it’s a collection original compositions peppered with covers of tunes by Blue Oyster Cult, New Math and Bauhaus. 

“It’s got a rushed, impromptu sound that I like,” said singer Mark Wood. “It sounds very ‘live.’ We didn’t do many takes or spend much time obsessing over details.” 

Hideous Sexy, Shock Theatre and Bride of Shock Theatre are available as free downloads at maryshelleyoverdrive.blogspot.com. These albums are available to bloggers, podcasters and radio stations to post and share however they wish.

Swedish surf band from Stockholm. Released their first vinyl 7" in 1997.Mike Barbwire has been one of the most relevant and talented figures in the European surf scene for years. This Swedish musician has been part of bands such as The Dragtones, The Hi-Winders, The Intruders and leads the Blue Ocean Orchestra, with whom he recorded the tuning that opens every day The Basement of Radio 3. But his first major project and the band with which he began to ride the waves of the reverb were The Barbwires.
