If you’re to believe what you read, today's San Francisco is under siege by predatory tech nerds and drones, plutocrats, wiz kids and opportunistic real estate developers. People have reacted in different ways to this onslaught. The Occupy Movement for one. You may have heard of people laying down in front of google buses in protest or smashing google glasses on the sidewalk...
...There’s also the path of art... In 2012, I released Temple Beautiful - an open love letter to San Francisco and its history and characters. After two years of performing the songs across the U.S and the globe, in late 2013, my band and I delivered the 12 song cycle Temple Beautiful with a string octet (scored and conducted by Brad Jones) in our hometown of San Francisco.
We had one chance to get it right. And this film is a document of the twists and turns in the road that brought us to that one-night-only sold-out performance at the Great American Music Hall (Itself a former bordello and a deco SF institution).
The songs performed that night include characters like Willie Mays, martyred supervisor Harvey Milk, Cain & Abel porn kings Jim & Artie Mitchell, mythic oddball "Red Man," preacher/Svengali Jim Jones, politician-turned assassin Dan White, and Emperor Norton, with cameos by Laffing Sal, Carol Doda, Bill Graham, and Fatty Arbuckle. Locations also play a key role, including the Castro and Mission Districts. One song is devoted to the White Night Riots, sparked by the light sentence received by the assassination of Milk and Mayor Moscone.
Some will have you believe that technology is the new culture. Then again, how can technology equate culture? Can Rock and Roll build community? Can songs connect people to the world? These are the questions explored in Strings In The Temple. - Chuck Prophet

Flat Duo Jets "In Stereo" EP 1992

The Big Bang that came before the world of White Stripes and Black Keys!
Calling this album In Stereo might seem to imply that it has there is some other Flat Duo Jets album that is recorded in lower fidelity -- in mono, perhaps. Maybe even a 78 or an Edison cylinder. I don't know of any album by this band in any of those media, but it would certainly be appropriate. This is rock & roll at a level so primitive and honest that it sounds like an early '20s field recording. The Flat Duo Jets -- in this case Romweber and Crow -- thrash their way through five rock & roll standards and one original tune, and they do it in fine and fascinating style. These two obviously have the talent to play with more finesse, and they just as obviously don't care to. The liner notes say that this album was recorded in one day, and one suspects it didn't take much longer to record than it takes to play. Celebrating a full decade as one of the best-kept secrets on the garage rock revival scene, the satelliters capped their first ten years with a casually brilliant ep that could be their best record yet...
...kicking off with the exhilarating "it's not true," the disc moves into high gear with the utterly fantastic pure pop of "where do we go?" featuring one of the catchiest hooks of their career (the heavily processed morse code guitar riff that powers the verses) and a killer chorus, "where do we go?" is the equal of a classic flamin' groovies or barracudas side as three minutes of '60s pastiche that's vibrant and exciting enough to get across on its own merits. a pair of covers of unknown gassers from back in the day (the knaves' lascivious "your stuff" and the bad rhoads' awesomely snotty "psychotic reaction" ripoff "blue girl") and two other solid originals cap the disc, providing a succinct quarter-hour's worth of prime garage punk. - Rough Trade, GB 06/06

Danny & Dusty "Here's to You Max Morlock" 2007 - Live in Nürnberg

Danny & Dusty are Steve Wynn and Dan Stuart, together with musicians from their musical environment. The story goes back to 1985, when the then very popular bands from the Paisley Underground "The Dream Syndicate", "Green on Red" and "The Long Ryders" came up with the idea of forming a kind of pub band on a whim, which looks very rural. Shortly afterwards the project “Danny & Dusty” was created, also featuring Chris Cacavas, Dennis Duck and Sid Griffin. The record was titled "Lost Weekend" and was completely relaxed country rock of the absolutely laid-back kind. Steve Wynn and Dan Stuart wrote the songs together and both sang. "Lost Weekend" is still considered the initial spark of the Americana and No Depression movements, which even influenced bands like "Uncle Tupelo". After that, everyone involved went their separate ways and their bands all gradually broke up. Steve Wynn, Sid Griffin and Chris Cacavas started their own solo careers, and Dan Stuart tried out a solo record and a project with Al Perry & The Cattle...
...On April 19th of this year the men performed in Nuremberg (at the K4) and a “package” with two CDs and a DVD is now available (Blue Rose / Hoanzl). It's more than easy to succumb to the truly timeless charms of songs like "Miracle mile", "The king of the losers" and especially "Bend in the road" in such a good-humoured concert situation. Groovy, stomping rock numbers like "Raise the roof" (Chris Cacavas switched to the electric guitar at short notice), "Cast iron soul", "Hold your mud" and "JD's Blues" created a sizzling atmosphere in the audience.
Stuart, who is always in the mood for jokes and always walks the fine line between flippantness, mannerisms and mocking behavior, plays the extroverted showman alongside the more reserved Wynn, while Stephen McCarthy impresses with his profound musicality on lap steel and electric guitar, whereby he... his tasteful solos are sometimes reminiscent of his colleague Gary Louris, Chris Cacavas acts as usual in a band-serving and sophisticated manner, Bob Rupe impresses with the role that is almost predestined for a bass player as a cool and accomplished rock in the surf and Johnny Hott also as a physical worker with steam-hammer ambitions. - Paul Jezek - Google translation

Debut of Big Beat's Nuggets From The Golden State series bringing the first rays of California sunshine via this 26-track compilation of rare and unissued Autumn era material by the masters of baroque folk pop, The Beau Brummels, an influential but under-rated band that mixed folk, R&B and pop...
...This CD collection of 26 rarities that the band recorded for the Autumn label contains 10 tracks that were released long after the band's demise and 16 that were never released before at all. The producer of the sessions was none other than Sylvester Stewart (Sly Stone). Of all the Bay Area rock groups to come out of California, The Beau Brummels was among the best. Signed by local DJs Tom Donahue and Bob Mitchell to their Autumn label, the band had 2 chart hits with Laugh Laugh (Top 10) and Just A Little (Top 5). Between 1964 and the demise of Autumn in 1966, the group toured extensively and appeared on TV and film. The music they cut for Autumn fused British beat sensibilities with the brilliant songwriting of guitarist Ron Elliott and the originality of the material is one of the great strengths of The Beau Brummels recordings. Many of the songs on this CD are demos (but of a superior kind). Some had already been mixed down for single release - Fine With Me is one such song (it was eventually re-recorded for Warner Brothers after the band had left Autumn). The rocker Woman is here with the original Declan Mulligan vocal (as in the teen flick Village Of The Giants) but there are many more rare delights to savor. The Satelliters "Hashish" 2004

The fifth album by the Satelliters evinces little in the way of creative growth, and in this brand of retro garage rock, that's a good thing...
...The Satelliters are far more than Germany's answer to the Hives, because this five-piece cares less about the pose than the sound: perfect doses of fuzztone guitar, just-so stabs of piercing Farfisa organ, and snaky hand percussion fill all of the songs. Interestingly, however, the covers aren't perfect replications of the originals (including the Association's "Five Man Band" and We the People's "You Byrn Me Up and Down"), but rather, smoking rave-ups on comparatively effete originals that these days somehow sound more "authentic" than the originals...The band's own songs fare much better, particularly the yowling "Go Away," which matches the aggression of the early Pretty Things, and the organ-driven hard psychedelia of the closing "1969: The End of Time." - Stewart Mason, All Music Guide, USA

Giant Sand "Ballad Of A Thin Line Man" 1986

Howe Gelb was still sorting out what he was doing with Giant Sand when the band recorded its second album, 1986's Ballad of a Thin Line Man, but while it's still rooted in the same sort of rough-and-tumble neo-paisley underground rock as the group's debut, Valley of Rain (released earlier the same year), it sounds a bit more like what Giant Sand would become than its predecessor...
...The opening cuts ("Thin Line Man" and a hot-wired cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower") set the mood with their frantic guitar bashing, their dramatic dynamics ("Thin Line Man" features a dramatic dubwise passage at the midpoint and "Watchtower" opens with a little more than a minute of fiddle scrapings and guitar atmospherics), and Gelb's tough but quizzical songwriting and vocals. But the ambling acoustic tone of "Graveyard" and "Who Am I?," the loopy piano plunking on "Last Legs," and the folk-rock undercurrents of "The Chill Outside" offer clues that Gelb had musical ambitions that flowed in several different directions at once. The addition of Paul Jean Brown gave Giant Sand a two-guitar lineup on these sessions (though Rainer Ptacek, Gelb's finest guitar foil, had yet to go into the studio with the band), and the raucous tone of Gelb and Brown's guitar duels makes the band's rock gestures significantly more exciting. And bassist Scott Garber and drummer Tom Larkins are a more solid and muscular rhythm section their second time out, even if these sessions still sound a touch chaotic. And while two high-profile covers are featured here -- "All Along the Watchtower" and Johnny Thunders' "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory" -- this album is still a very clear reflection of Gelb's musical mind and personality, and he fills both songs with his own spirit. The Ramblin' Ambassadors "Vista Cruiser Country Squire" 2008

...The Ramblin' Ambassadors -- not "Bastards" (why? Being a fan of CBC morning radio, Cooper couldn't imagine CBC hostess Shelagh Rodgers saying "and that was the Ramblin' BASTARDS") -- are soon sharing stages with the Calgary punk-rockers The Von Zippers, Supersuckers, and Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys. Still without a permanent drummer, the band relies on help from Chixdiggit's David Alcock. A chance meeting occurs with pizza deliverist/drummer Tyler Pickering and the lineup is complete...
...Within a couple of months, the band starts recording in their secret-location rehearsal complex. Unhappy pushing "record" with his toe while playing guitar and giving orders, Cooper enlists the recording expertise of David Alcock. Opting for a stripped down sound, Dave's studio is reduced from twenty-four tracks to twelve, ensuring a minimum of studio trickery and a maximum of budgetary compliance.
Although comparisons to Huevos Rancheros are inevitable, the Ambassadors draw on more than just Cooper's rock and roll instrumental primitivisms. Mariachi trumpet, sleigh bell percussion, and loopy, Theremin-sounding toy keyboards pop up on the recording... - to be continued... - from Mint Records

Chris Cacavas "Love's Been Discontinued" 2009

I’d been sailing under the radar all day, my 370Z punching through the setting sun of the late afternoon on my left, and the rising of the moon on my right, when that tight feeling slipped into my shoulders, right there below my neck ... I exhaled, leaned forward, and then rocked back finally feeling the long drive across Route 40, and the curves of the mountain by-pass. I slipped into a small diner, downed a burger and a coke while watching the full moon take up two thirds of a crisp cool October sky; we all did, all four of us, the waitress, the cook, a fellow traveler and myself. As I went to pay my bill I passed a Lost and Found Box full of single gloves, sunglasses, and toys ... mixed in was a brand new copy of Chris Cacavas’ “Love’s Been Discontinued.” I asked if I could buy it, the waitress waved her hand and said, “Just take it babe, I like your eyes ...” It’d been a long time since another woman had flirted so openly with me, I tipped my hat, took the disc, and told her to keep the change.
She was looking out the window leaning on the palms of her hands as I climbed into my car, slid the disc into the changer, and smiled with instant pleasure as the first note hooked me. I pulled back onto the road bobbing my head with what I hoped was going to be the first of a dozen great tracks ... and a half hour later as I danced back onto Route 40 I hadn’t been disappointed even once. The songs bounced, they jumped, they rolled, and at times magically hung in a effortless hypnotic state of heavy fabric ... meticulously mapping a musical adventure that left nothing forgotten or wished for. I'd like to say that the songs are full of hooks, but that would be to cheapen them, when what I will tell you is that the songs are infectious and compelling, more than slightly familiar, and that each gimmick feels absolutely necessary, with notes and conceptions that have been well considered, sitting perfectly, dancing just in front of my eyes, creating one of the brightest spots I’ve visited in quite awhile.
Of course riding shotgun with Steve Wynn of Dream Syndicate, and coming out of Green On Red with Chuck Prophet didn’t hurt Chris at all. Yet up here on this lofty plateau, with the full moon glowing like some surreal beacon in the night, this music feels just perfect ... a wondrous, thick, and layered mix of electronics and guitars that balance each track, carrying one song into the next. And that tight feeling I had between my shoulder blades [?], well that was all so long ago that I can’t even remember it ... though I do remember the face of the waitress in the moonlight, and I bite my lip turing up the volume as I wonder what might have been. - streetmouse

Bo Diddley "Bo Diddley" 1958

For anyone who wants to play rock & roll, real rock & roll, this is one of the few records that you really need...
...Along with Chuck Berry, Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and a few select others, Bo Diddley was one of the founders of the form -- and he did it like no other. Diddley had only one real style, that being the Bo Diddley beat: a syncopated, rhythmic drive, loaded with tremolo. There are 12 examples of it on this record, and that is about all you need. It's one of those records that, after listening to just a few cuts, will find you tapping the beats on every available surface. Diddley's guitar and vocals have a gruff feeling that recalls bluesmen such as Waters, yet he has his own style. Buttressed by drums, funky piano, and usually maracas, it's absolutely infectious. This is one of the greatest rock sounds that you're likely to hear, and it's all on this one record, too. - Review by Matthew Greenwald

Howe Gelb "The Listener" 2003

The Listener marks 20 idiosyncratic years of Howe Gelb on his own. His first solo effort, the cassette-only Incidental Music, hit the streets in 1983 and although he's issued other solo works since, he remains best known as the man behind Arizona's equally idiosyncratic Giant Sand and OP8 with Lisa Germano...
...Recorded primarily in Denmark (from where his second wife, Sophie Albertsen, hails), Gelb sounds as Southwestern as ever (even if he actually grew up in Pennsylvania). His distinctive voice has always come across like a dust-blown cross between Lou Reed, Neil Young, and Lee Hazlewood, but there's more jazzy piano and understated brass and strings here than rock & roll or country guitar. On "Felonious," Mr. "Home" as he's billed himself, even acknowledges the debt to Reed, while wishing he could play the keys more like Duke Ellington or Thelonious Monk -- even if the melancholy number sounds more like Young's "After the Gold Rush." The overall mood is casual, laid-back, and relaxed. Just as Lee Hazlewood once titled an album, Cowboy in Sweden, The Listener could as easily have been titled "A (Space) Cowboy in Denmark." - Review by Kathleen C. Fennessy

Bo Diddley "Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger" 1960

Not only does it sport one of the most striking album covers of its era (Diddley decked out in cowboy finery, about to get the drop on some unfortunate varmint with one of his fieriest guitars lying at his feet), this 1961 album contains some fine music...
...The title track continues the legend of you-know-who, while "Ride on Josephine" and "Cadillac" rock like hell (and Ed Sullivan must have been glad to see that Diddley finally learned "Sixteen Tons"). Two bonus cuts, "Working Man" and "Do What I Say," make this one a must. - Review by Bill Dahl

Retro-rockabilly maniacs the Flat Duo Jets paired singer/guitarist Dexter Romweber and drummer Crow; though based throughout much of their career in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the duo first gained widespread exposure appearing live in the 1986 music documentary Athens, Georgia: Inside/Out. Bo Diddley "Bo Diddley's Beach Party" 1963

A blistering live album, especially in genuine mono (the re-channeled stereo is barely passable) -- and quite simply the finest live rock & roll album of its era, cut live by Diddley and band at Myrtle Beach, SC, on July 5 and 6, 1963.
From the opening track (erroneously listed as "Memphis" and credited to Chuck Berry as composer) to the final note, this is some of the loudest, raunchiest guitar-based rock & roll ever preserved. It also bears an uncanny resemblance to the sound that the Rolling Stones achieved on their own Got Live If You Want It, which only shows how much the Stones learned from Diddley. Highlights include "Gunslinger," "Hey Bo Diddley," "Road Runner," and "I'm All Right." Currently out of print but well worth the search. ~ Bruce Eder & Cub Koda, All Music Guide

Chuck Prophet "The Land That Time Forgot" 2020

Considerably quieter than Prophet's previous records, "Land That Time Forgot" is soaked in nostalgic references. On the back cover of the record is a photo of his parents all dressed up in typically 1950s festive fashion and the record references the mid-twentieth century at several instances, for instance, "Marathon" is about dance marathons during the Great Depression...
...However, these looks back into the past are not marked by romance but by reflection. While Prophet has written several politically charged songs ("Alex Nieto") and records (2009's "Let Freedom Ring") before, this record features his politically most explicit songs. "Paying My Respect To The Train" is a wistful and affectionate story about the voyage of the dead President Lincoln. "Nixonland" deals with Prophet being born in Nixon's home county in southern California and features great lyrics ("He cut a trail through the DMZ/All the way up to Nixonland"). Ultimately, "Get Off The Stage" is directed at the current commander-in-chief, a polite but explicit request to leave office ("We'll put some John Prine on repeat/All we're asking is get off the stage"). However, as good as these three songs are, they are not the best on the record. This title belongs to such songs as the fantastic "High As Johnny Thunders", a what-if song that may also deal with Prophet's own drug abuse in his younger years, the excellent "Willie and Nilli" about a couple of metal-listening outsiders, and "Waving Goodbye" about a childhood of abuse. As a whole, the record features great slide playing by James DePrato, great background vocals by Prophet's wife Stephanie Finch, and a thought-out and canny production style. Some may miss more of Prophet's excellent electric guitar playing, which he has shown on his previous records. But this is not what "Land That Time Forgot" is about. It is about storytelling conducted by one of music's most reliable Singer/Songwriters of the present time. - Markus Bierkoch

The Satelliters "Sexplosive!" 2001

...Although The Satelliters are a contemporary band, you would swear they were born andbred in 1966. Sticking to the basics, this live wire German combo doles out mean andlean garage rock--the sort of fare "Teenage Shutdown" characters like The Syndicate, The Burgundy Runn, The Preachers, The Human Beings, The Jackson Investment Company, and Ognir and The Nite People which never fail to tickle our fancies. The most recent album from The Satelliters, "Sexplosive!" stands to be a real joyride and a half, with its incredibly snappy songs that make you want to dance, sing and shout with excitement. Original tunes such as "When I Arrive," "Your Lies," "Now You Want Me Girl," and "Sorrow Minus One" prove the band knows their stuff from front to back, back to front. They've been tutored by the best of the bunch, yet they don't sound as if they're just pale imitations of their idols because they manage to translate their own colorful personality into the performance.
Routed by sneering vocals that decidedly cop an attitude from Sky Saxon of The Seeds, "Sexplosive!" offers everything great there is about pure as snow garage rock, from the screaming harmonies to the bouncy organ washes. Lots of heated guitar work also fuels the disc, be it buzzing fuzztone licks or the twelve-string jangle of a Rickenbacker. As well, the hooks are nailed in all the right places. Dan Stuart "Can O' Worms" 1995

Now, here comes Dan Stuart, once-and-future-king of the flophouse known as Green On Red, with an album that draws upon songs from his recent extended stay in Spain...
...Considering that Dan Stuart's well-respected, if under the radar, Americana band Green on Red was relatively prolific in their '80s heyday, his subsequent solo career has oddly been nearly nonexistent. Besides a few Danny & Dusty releases (separated by a gap of 22 years) and this album that closely followed GOR's dissolution, there hasn't been anything else. That's too bad because based on this performance, Stuart could have rivaled Chuck Prophet, his far more successful songwriting comrade in Green on Red. These songs aren't that far removed from what he was up to in that band, although he is more relaxed, wiry, and low-key here. Occasionally he sounds a bit mopey and distanced, but that's not a bad thing since the lyrics express similar sentiments of disillusionment. His characters have generally been "stranded for too long, washed up on the shore" as he relates in "Expat. Blues," one of the disc's most powerful performances due in large part to J.D. Foster's nearly avant-garde guitar solos that knife their way through the track along with his overdubbed, sparse sax. Stuart visits Tom Waits territory for the grungy, greasy "Filipina Stripper," filled with poetic, other-side-of-the-track images and driven by Jon Dee Graham's mucky, snarky guitar. Everything seems a little dirty and ruffled up like a bed that hasn't been made in a month. Even ballads such as "Waterfall" and "What a Day" feel stranded and dislocated, similar to the struggling people that populate Stuart's songs. We go south of the border for a rather ragged acoustic Mexacali approach on "La Pasionaria," a tale of revenge apparently sung by a dying man. While the sound is dark throughout, it's not depressing, and the album resonates in a grimy groove that gets under your skin in a good way. Why there was never a follow-up is a mystery, but Can O' Worms is well worth searching out, especially for fans of Green on Red. - by Hal Horowitz

Giant Sand "Valley Of Rain" 1985

The dry, dusty, and rambling sound that became Howe Gelb's trademark isn't much in evidence on Giant Sand's debut album, 1985's Valley of Rain. Instead, this early edition of the band recalls the distaff branch of the Paisley Underground scene that was still a big part of the Los Angeles scene when Gelb arrived there from Tuscon, as if Giant Sand were the oddball high desert cousins of Green on Red...
...Valley of Rain is tougher and scrappier than much of what Giant Sand would release later on, and it rocks noticeably harder, though Gelb's sense of lyrical wanderlust is very much evident here, and even when the guitars wind up and the drums crack, the melodies drift on and off path with an expressive glee. The band's slightly warped country influences are all but invisible here (perhaps because Gelb and his pals were cutting a Blacky Ranchette album around the same time), and Valley of Rain sounds more sharply focused than the typical Giant Sand album. Gelb and his partners -- bassist Scott Garber and drummers Tom Larkins and Winston A. Watson, Jr. -- sound admirably tight and together, considering this lineup fell together at the last minute before these sessions began, and the album was recorded on the fly for a mere four hundred bucks. Valley of Rain isn't classic Giant Sand, but it's a strong and confident starting point and it has weathered the test of time rather well: "Tumble and Tear," "Down on Town," and "Death, Dying and Channel 5" are forceful and idiosyncratic rockers, while "Artists" and "October, Anywhere" give a clue to where Giant Sand would go in the future. In a long journey full of fascinating detours along the way, Giant Sand's first album was a rocking pit stop that's lively, smart, and full of nerve. - Review by Mark Deming

Chris Cacavas & The Slivers Of Hope "Live At The Laboratorium" 2005

After the departure from Green On Red Chris Cacavas began the pursuit of his solo career. Almost 18 years later he released his ninth studio recording "Self Taut" on Blue Rose Records. As he had only moved to Germany his plan was to continue to record and tour with the band he'd put together in the States…
…The band consisted of Ed Kampwirth on bass, Brandon Laws on drums, and Jesse Wilder on guitar and keyboards. Jason Victor from Steve Wynn's "Miracle 3" on lead guitar joined the band for the tour. It was the first time he ever played his songs live with a five piece band. The 2 hour set included songs from Cacavas' most recent album "Self Taut" as tunes from his previous albums like "Pale Blonde Hell", "California Into The Ocean", "AWOL", or "Big Joke". The show at a packed "Laboratorium" in Stuttgart, Germany on April 23, 2004 was a typical Chris Cacavas show, captured as it was - ROCKING!

"Rambling Bastards? Great! I'm making a poster -- now!"

Flat Duo Jets "Flat Duo Jets" 1990

Another KICKS @SS, rare one & a favorite band in the same vein as SCOTS! The legendary first foot-wide release by the Duo Jets, recorded in a garage to two tracks. Tone Meyer (bass) was the third wheel on the Jets landing gear during this time. Still considered one of the best garage / rockabilly albums ever recorded!
That's no greasy middle-aged man, that's Dexter Romweber, a greasy younger cat from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, whose hillbilly guitar and soulful pipes recapture the primitive off-the-cuff brilliance of early rockabilly (as in Jerry Lee Lewis, not the Stray Cats). While other fans of the old stuff simply try to replicate the past, Flat Duo Jets — usually just Dex and drummer Crow — somehow become the real thing, displaying nary a hint of nostalgia.
The six appealingly shabby tracks of In Stereo cover the Coasters, Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly et al., but the first full album is unalloyed brilliance. Wailin', hootin' and generally acting like a country boy headed straight for hell, Romweber runs on pure forward momentum through mindless rockers like "Wild Wild Lover" and "Please Please Baby," then becomes a backwoods Romeo for wonderfully oily ballads like "Baby" and "Dreams Don't Cost a Thing." Chuck Prophet "Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins" 2017

Is Chuck Prophet a storyteller who just happens to be a great musician. Or is he a talented songwriter and guitarist who also has a real gift for spinning tales?..
...On 2017's Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins, his 12th studio album, Prophet has managed to strike an ideal balance between the two sides, delivering a tuneful and engaging set that's full of character sketches with a full complement of heart, soul, honesty, wit, and the details of a recognizable adult life. Prophet is capable of playfully imagining what it would be like to be the star of Nashville and Friday Night Lights ("If I Was Connie Britton"), then sharing the true story of a young man gunned down by the San Francisco police for no clear reason just a few tracks later ("Alex Nieto"). Both songs come off as smart, honest, and thoughtful despite their very different tone, and those adjectives apply to nearly every cut on this album. The current state of music is a recurring theme here, as evidenced by the title tune, "Bad Year for Rock and Roll," "We Got Up and Played," and "In the Mausoleum" (the latter an homage to the late Alan Vega of Suicide). But Prophet is just as interested in the lives of people in all sorts of trouble. A single mother and a gunman unexpectedly cross paths in "Killing Machine," the author ponders the objects of his affection in "Your Skin" and "Coming Out in Code," the peaks and valleys of romantic relationships are examined in "Open Up Your Heart," and the Son of God's consumer preferences get a rundown in "Jesus Was a Social Drinker." Prophet and his studio band (including Tubes drummer Prairie Prince and co-producers Brad Jones and Matt Winegar on various instruments) give the melodies a rich, wide-ranging sound, and Prophet has rarely been better as a vocalist, finding the right tone on every track. Along with having one of the best titles of recent memory, Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins confirms that more than 25 years after making his solo debut, Chuck Prophet remains one of America's strongest songwriters and recording artists, and he's in great form here. - Review by Mark Deming
