Like Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James at his best was a perfect synthesis of early rock and roll and blues. James and his exceptionally tight band rocked, swung, and maintained a hard blues edge through the whole thing. Where some of James contemporaries became redundant and didn't always complete an album without a certain amount of filler, James leads his band through 12 tracks of all out rockers, blues shuffles, and ripping instrumentals that never seem to grow tiresome. The strength in James' work on "Sho' Nuff I Do," "Early in the Morning," "Hawaiin Boogie: Part 1 & 2" and "Make a Little Love" is that he can play that great slide riff over and over, and it never grows stale. Still, the collection is a bit brief but serves as a nice sampler of the many sides of James' music. Collector Records is run by obsessive Dutch collector Cees Klop who started issuing LPs of rare 50s rockabilly and rock 'n' roll in the 70s on his White Label. After nearly two hundred LP releases (!) he switched to compact disc in 1991 reissuing some of the previously reissued material as well as a whole heap of newly unearthed material. In addition to reissuing rare 45s he has tracked down artists, record labels and recording studios resulting in releases which include alternate takes, unissued songs, demos and home recordings. Some of the releases have a regional or thematic slant but most are just miscellaneous collections. Sound quality is good considering the origin of some of the material and the packaging is pleasing in a down home way with slim booklets with photos and label shots and occasional notes. Almost every release has some really excellent material and the real enthusiast will want 'em all.(Roots & Rhythm)

...Now, as a one-man band, Al has been able to focus more on whittling his distinctive songwriting and inimitable style into a sharp point that pokes through the trends and fashions to get at something timeless. All the cuts on this album were recorded live with Al simultaneously singing, playing guitar, and drumming in the basement of producer Naim Amor (www.amormusic.com). No overdubs or fixes will be heard on here - just the real deal, what you might hear if Al were playing at a party in your living room. The only things added in post-production were the occasional handclaps and a violin in the background of Frankie Lane's "Wanted Man". Al's unmistakable vocals never waver throughout the disc, brilliantly capturing the character of each song with a broad, smooth voice coming from deep inside his beer-soaked guts. Whether it is a desperate love song or the ballad of a troubled troubadour. Al Foul can sing it with a degree of sincerity that cuts to the bone.

...They are, probably along with the fabulous Thanes from Scotland, one of the very few bands of the genre that keep the faith! "On The Move" is the follow-up album after last year's live CD "A Go-Go At A Cave Near You" on INKA Records! Great compositions, well-structured instrumentation and awesome production in combination with a "lost-in-tyme" artwork make this effort by far their best! Their now-sound can be described as "retro neo-garage", based on the legacy of the best groups of the 60's punk Era and the most important revivalists of the 80's and 90's, since the majority of the groups of the genre today sound with an obvious distorted orientation. Thus, it is not only their Farfisa dominated sound that rules inhere but overall, an appreciation attitude towards the originators. "The Brood" is the album's opening track, a great instrumental tune with references to the B-movies atmosphere of the mid-60's! Way-cool fuzz-punkers will follow such as "Why She'd Ever Leave", "I Live In Hell", "You Made Me Cry" and the self-titled "On The Move". A New England mood you can feel by listening to "How Can We Go On" whilst "Treat Me Kind" is truly a melodic number and "So Sad" reflects the band's folk punk influences. "Away From Your Lies" brings to mind the Wilson Pickett's classic "In The Midnight Hour" and "I Can't Wait Till Friday Comes" recalls The Pretty Things and The Tell-Tale Hearts! "I Got A Girl" is the swinging moment of the album which closes with an excellent cover of Kit & The Outlaws' "Don't Tread On Me". I have literally been playing guitar since I was old enough to hold one. I have always loved guitar instrumentals, I grew up on the Ventures, Duane Eddy, Chet Atkins, Lonnie Mack, Arthur Guitar Smith, BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins, and every other great blues, country or surf guitarist I could find. This CD represents a lot to me and I put a lot of time into writing the songs because I want them to stand the test of time like my mentors. Each song was played and refined for several months before recording them in one take with no overdubs. I hope everyone enjoys this CD as much as I did making it. I'm very proud of this CD. I have played in bands all my life. When I moved to Austin I played in several bands including Rocky Erickson, Leroi Brothers, Tailgators, Big Guitars from Texas (grammy nominated). I have played all over the world (at least the top part) never got to Africa or south of Texas but I've played all the european countries, Scandanavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and every little town in the USA that has a club - Don Leady

...Conrad Uno's production unsurprisingly isn't too fussy at all, while the harmonica and mid-speed (as opposed to lazy) tempo of nearly everything adds to the charm of it all. Mark Arm's wounded garage howl isn't trying to really be anything but itself (as opposed to, say, Muddy Waters), and for every straight-up bluesy wail and stomp ("Angelhead," "Doubled Over Again," "Bottle Up & Go"), there's something else again. "Cold Cold World," with a droning organ part from Arm offsetting the quick, crisp clip of the rest of the band, and the stop-start Mudhoney-in-all-but-name "Great Down Here" are among the exceptions to the seeming rule. Three covers crop up, with a tip of the hat to Buffy Sainte-Marie via the Sonics thanks to a slightly shambolic rumble through "Codine." A fairly calm version of Mose Allison's "Stop This World" and, amusingly enough, a frenetic screw-you take on Redd Kross' "Notes and Chords Mean Nothing to Me" also crop up among all the originals. The inevitable Blues Brothers comparisons (the mock Blue Note cover photo has the band in suits and shades; no porkpie hats, though) don't stick too much, thanks in part because it's a case of sharp performers keeping things loose and not making a big deal of things. Indeed, it looks like more work went into the layout of the album rather than into any deep theorizing of what's going on, which is to the band's credit and the cover artwork's benefit. - AllMusic Review by Ned Raggett

...There are recognizable names here -- more so than on the original Nuggets -- but no charting hits, and it's easy to listen to "Talking to the Flowers" without realizing that it's the Everly Brothers (although Davy Jones' voice on the Paul Williams-composed "Someday Man" is a giveaway that it's the Monkees). There's a certain uniformity of sound here -- lots of luxurious strings, multi-part harmonies, horns, and keyboards, very little in the way of trippy studio effects -- but each group has a different spin on this signature sound, which keeps things interesting over the course of 24 tracks. If there are no outright classics here, as there was on the very first Nuggets (which is truly the comparison point, since that was the first serious multi-artist retrospective of psychedelic garage rock, and this is the first serious multi-artist retrospective of soft psychedelic pop), that's almost beside the point, since unlike garage rock, the song takes a back seat to the production and the overall feel. On that level, Come to the Sunshine is not just successful, but it's a definitive portrait and introduction to appeals of soft AM pop.(Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Almusic)

An important side to Elmore's character which may have hastened his demise was his lifelong taste for, and manufacture of, moonshine whiskey, to which he was introduced at an early age. Alcohol definitely killed his band mates/friends Willie Love & Johnny Jones at a relatively early age, and probably others too. His regular rhythm guitarist Homesick James maintained his longevity was due to his not partaking of the heavy drinking sessions after - and often during - gigs, a refusal that was unpopular with the rest of the band. The collection really trawls around the bottom side of the indie rocking spectrum of the late 50s and early 60s – digging through the dirt to come up with some incredibly raunchy tunes that run the gamut from rockabilly to novelty rock to instrumental R&B – and lots of other styles in between!
