The Phoenix Foundation "Fandango" 2013

...Sideways manoeuvres…Following the band’s success with Pegasus, in 2006 solo albums were released by Scott and Buda: The Hunt Brings Us Life and Special Surprise respectively. The recordings showcase the different styles of their writers: Sam Scott, with a loose, folky, country-acoustic vibe; Luke Buda’s album features trippy electronica and 80s pop and was inspired by the birth of his son. Both albums were critically lauded. Another string to The Phoenix Foundation’s bow was their first foray into soundtrack work, recording the soundtrack to the Taika Waititi film Eagle Vs. Shark. This went well, and they recorded the soundtrack for Waititi’s follow-up film, 2010’s phenomenally successful Boy, placing their own instrumental pieces beside a faithful but quirky cover of Princess Te Rangi Pai’s ‘Hine e Hine’. The Boy soundtrack won best original music in a feature film at the Qantas Film and Television Awards in 2010. But, we’re jumping ahead here, as that was three years after their next album: Happy Ending…

…Success… Happy Ending signalled international success for the band. Now signed to Flying Nun after Warners purchased FMR, they also signed to US label Young American Recordings. The band’s time at Warners isn’t fondly remembered, says Scott. “We weren’t very happy … that was a pretty stink time in the band’s history. Not because they did anything shitty, just because our album came out the same month as the new Feelers record, who were like our nemesis band! They just got so much more attention than us.” The group toured the US successfully in the first half of 2007, playing 12 shows over three weeks – including three shows with The Veils. Happy Ending was released in October 2007, comprising material created while touring and built up in live performances. Again recorded at The Surgery with Prebble, the album was musically more upbeat, especially on ‘Bleaching Sun’, ‘40 Years’, and ‘Bright Grey’, a song detailing what Scott called “future angst”. ‘Bright Grey’ was a bNet Top 10 track, and had an impressive video directed by Taika Waititi, as did follow-up single ‘40 Years’. The band shared songwriting credits on Happy Ending, and had guest appearances by local musicians Age Pryor, Tom Callwood, and Craig Terris, among others.
Happy Ending was a finalist in five NZ Music Awards categories in 2008, winning two technical awards. To cap it off, 2007 was also the year Horsepower was finally released in the US. The Phoenix Foundation also strengthened their ties with the Finn brothers in 2008, supporting Split Enz on their reunion tour.The reaction from the UK gatekeeper press was impressive, with four and five star reviews in Mojo, Uncut, and The Independent – The Independent’s Andy Gill calling them “surely the most potent band to come out of New Zealand since the far-off days of The Chills.”...to be continued… - AUDIOCULTURE Amanda Mills

Ray Charles "Singular Genius" The Complete ABC Singles CD 1-2

It’s easy, in retrospect, to map out Ray Charles' journey to musical icon status -- his one-of-a-kind talent became more evident each step of the way as he moved from Swing Time Records to Atlantic Records, and then on to ABC Records…

...Charles' first recording sessions from the late '40s and very early '50s featured an artist heavily influenced by Nat King Cole and Charles Brown and working in a pronounced pop direction. Charles recorded for several small West Coast labels during this time, but most notably for Jack Lauderdale's Swing Time Records. It wasn't until Lauderdale sold Charles' contract to Atlantic Records (for a mere $2,000) in 1952 that Charles began the legendary fusion of R&B and gospel that led to hits like "What'd I Say" and "I Got a Woman" that single-handedly created what became known as soul. Charles hit his stride at Atlantic, creating the signature synthesis of R&B, gospel, blues, country, and jazz that made him one of the most important and influential figures in pop music history. When ABC-Paramount offered him more creative freedom, ownership of his master recordings after five years, and his own label imprint, Tangerine Records (which Charles used to record some of his personal R&B favorites, including Percy Mayfield, Louis Jordan, and Little Jimmy Scott), Charles left Atlantic and signed with ABC in 1960, remaining with the label through 1972, by which time he was firmly established as an American treasure and icon, thanks to his enduring versions of songs like “Georgia on My Mind,” “Hit the Road Jack,” and “I Can’t Stop Loving You.” This expansive five-disc set collects the A- and B-sides of the 53 singles Charles released for ABC-Paramount between 1960 and 1972, along with select album tracks that were formatted for radio play at the time and a handful of live tracks from the period, to make a full survey of Ray Charles at his creative and commercial peak. "Let Me Turn You On!" 2013

Some guys just know quality rock & roll, and Geoff Ginsberg is one of them. Ginsberg is a music writer who also runs a cool independent label called Real-O-Mind, but at heart the man is a superfan who loves few things more than hipping people to great music, and the folks at the exemplary U.K. label Easy Action have given Ginsberg the chance to do just that with Let Me Turn You On!, a 20-song collection of rare tracks of all shapes and sizes, united in the fact they all deliver the rock…

...For Ginsberg, the Holy Trinity is a great tune, great lyrics, and great guitar riffs, and just about everything on Let Me Turn You On! fills that bill, except for the leadoff number, "Big Cat Stomp" by Cheetah Chrome with Sweet Justice, which happens to be an instrumental, but the dueling guitars are eloquent enough to make up for it. The sizable majority of the tracks here are either previously unreleased or new to CD, and if you dig real-deal, full-bodied rock & roll, there's something here you're going to like -- outstanding revved-up country-rock from the Blue Chieftains and Go to Blazes, fine obscurities from Aussie trailblazers the 31st, the Scientists, and Leadfinger, inspired collaborations from Steve Wynn & Eric "Roscoe" Ambel and Mike Wilhelm with Johnny Casino's Easy Action, choice stuff from hard rock legends the Rockets and the Dictators, guitar manna from power pop giants the Windbreakers, and even a dash of prime live Iggy Pop. While Ginsberg put together an excellent Scott Morgan box set for Easy Action, he managed to uncover two more obscurities from the Michigan blue-eyed soul legend for this comp, and hearing Deniz Tek of Radio Birdman rip through "Smith & Wesson Blues" with Morgan's band Powertrane or Morgan belting out "Original Sin" with Chris Masuak & the North 40 is practically worth the purchase price right there. And if Pink Slip Daddy, Grand Theft Auto, or the Friggs are band names that don't mean much to you, once you hear them here you'll want to know more. In his liner notes, Ginsberg said his concept with Let Me Turn You On! was to make an album that flowed like a good mixtape, and that's just what he accomplished -- this is the soundtrack to a great rock & roll party or an outstanding road trip, full of killer tracks and pleasant surprises, and if you still believe in great tunes and great guitars, this disc will turn you on big time. - AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

The Phoenix Foundation "Horse Power" 2007

Horsing Around… 2002 was a turning point. The band met Lee Prebble, who became instrumental in the development of the Phoenix Foundation sound. They went into his studio The Surgery (then used by TrinityRoots and Shihad), emerging with debut album Horsepower...

...Experimental in technique, alt-folky, psychedelic, and with hints of electronica and country, Horsepower was impressive. ‘This Charming Van’ and ‘Let Me Die a Woman’ (originally recorded in Buda’s bedroom) struck a chord with listeners and critics, gaining significant airplay on RDU and 95bFM. Strong videos for ‘Gone Fishing’ and ‘Let Me Die a Woman’ (the Knack Award winner for outstanding results on a small budget), added to the band’s ever-increasing profile. Album track ‘Bruiser’ took advantage of their metal and funk backgrounds, with a metal-esque guitar solo and hypnotic rhythm section. Horsepower included instrumental tracks, something the band would do frequently on their albums.
Again self-funded, Horsepower was released in 2003, and the band signed with local independent music label Capital Records, who paid for mastering and distribution. As a parallel move, Luke Buda released his first solo album, The C-Sides, which built on live favourites from the early days of the band.
Taking flight… In between the release and support of Horsepower, and the recording of follow-up album Pegasus, the band changed bass players, with Warner Emery replacing Tom Hansen. They also moved from Capital Records to the Australasian indie label FMR, a time and place Scott speaks fondly of, especially one particular Christmas party … “Me and Warner … almost got into a fight with Kody Nielson from The Mint Chicks cause we were all so completely out of our brains.”...to be continued… - AUDIOCULTURE Amanda Mills

Rick Lawndale Band "Surfabilly Rock" 2002

Like the title says, the twelve tracks here are immersed in surf and rockabilly (and more) as you'd expect from the lineage that precedes this band. Not really like Lawndale, yet clearly of the same cauldron, this is a very good release with four excellent instros. - Phil Dirt

The music of the Rick Lawndale Band is a unique hybrid of surf music, rockabilly and psychedelic rock.
By way of background group founder and composer Rick Lawndale gained some renown in the 80\'s as a member of psychedelic surf unit Lawndale. Lawndale released two lps on the SST label and was also featured on the Lovedolls Superstars soundtrack with other artists such as Redd Kross and Black Flag. Lawndale toured nationally as well as in Mexico and Canada.
The Surfabilly Rock CD features lead guitarist Ricky Sepulveda (Nervous Gender, The Ray Pettibone Experience){who has since been replaced by guitarist Paul Feldman) drummer Dave Rodriguez (The Surf Raiders, The Sultans of Surf ) and bassist Marcel Loera who also currently performs with surf instrumental group The Vindicators.. The Phoenix Foundation "Pegasus" 2005

In the early 2000s, Wellington’s music scene was known for dub-reggae hybrid bands and hard rockers Shihad, rather than a sextet of often hirsute alt-rockers which took its name from a well-known TV action series. The Phoenix Foundation has gone from being a band with a local cult following to winning national awards and playing on international music shows and festivals, while their recordings regularly gain good press…

…The origins of The Phoenix Foundation can be found in two words: heavy metal. Wellington High School friends and multi-instrumentalists Lukasz Buda and Conrad Wedde founded Komos, their heavy metal band, with Samuel Flynn Scott joining on vocals and guitar. With their musical tastes evolving rapidly, Scott, a lover of indie-rock, suggested they form a guitar group. They became Sprink, with Tui Langford and Noel Phear. In the heady world of rock music, change occurs frequently, and the band (now the core trio of Scott, Polish-born Buda, and Wedde) decided to rename themselves the Phoenix Foundation after a fictional organisation in MacGyver, the iconic 1980s television show. Their debut self-funded, self-recorded EP China Cove emerged in 2000 and while it didn’t set the world on fire, it did crystallise the band’s drive.
The following year, the trio expanded to a six-piece, with Tim Hansen (bass), Richie Singleton (drums) and Will Ricketts (percussion) underpinning the already established guitars, keyboards and vocals, creating an atmosphere of alt-rock experimentation. In addition to this, Scott was coming into his own as a songwriter, and his songs were getting attention.
It was this early line-up that recorded ‘The Drinker’ and ‘Blue Summer’ – non-album tracks that gained wider exposure. ‘The Drinker’ won best unreleased song at the bNet awards in 2002, while ‘Blue Summer’ topped the national alternative radio charts for four weeks.
‘The Drinker’, along with ‘Let Me Die A Woman’ and ‘This Charming Van’, are important to the band. “We went from making music that none of us particularly care about now to the next three songs that we made together [being] quite significant. Lawndale "Sasquatch Rock" 1987

At the time that this record was released, the very idea of SST records releasing an album of instrumental surf music was bizarre. Nevertheless, if SST was going to release such an album, this was the right one…

...Lawndale rocks hard throughout this delightful and unpredictable album, uniting styles with effortless glee. Listen to the incredible version of the jazz standard "Take Five," which somehow contains the bridge to Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" -- what kind of twisted individual could imagine that combination? Or having imagined it, made it work in such a seamless and delightful manner? The mix of German oompah band rhythm and Tex-Mex on "Next to the Last Frontier" isn't nearly as odd, since Germans in Texas had a lot to do with the sound of that music, but never have the two influences sounded so distinct and yet so artfully melded before -- at least, when played by a rock band. "March of the Melted Army Men" is more straightforward, a kicking rock song with what is probably the only appearance on a surf album in Greg Ginn's career. The punk rock stalwart turns in a creditable and manic solo that fits in just fine with the orchestrated chaos of the song. Every cut on Sasquatch Rock is a keeper, but there is one standout, the soaring, complex "Instrumental." (Since there are no vocals on the album except for a couple of screams and groans, there is a certain delicate irony here.) "Instrumental" strings together six musical themes ranging from country and soul to jazz and, inevitably, surf music, and tosses in transitions, recaps, and mutations galore to create an amazing medley. Lawndale's output was meager, a mere two albums, but every track they released was splendid and their influence was widely felt. Sasquatch Rock is a must-have for anyone who loves instrumental electric guitar with a surf rock tinge.

"Smash Boom Bang!" The Songs and Productions of Feldman-Goldstein-Gottehrer

A 1960s songwriting, production, and sometimes performing team, Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein, and Richard Gottehrer haven't gotten the attention of similar hit-making songwriting teams of the era like Boyce & Hart, Mann & Weil, or Goffin & King, maybe because Feldman, Goldstein and Gottehrer sounds more like a law firm than anything else…

...But these guys made hits, including "Hang On Sloopy" by the McCoys, "You're So Good to Me" by Debra Swisher, and "My Boyfriend's Back" by the Angels, among others, and even managed a hit performed by themselves, the immortal "I Want Candy," which was attributed to the Strangeloves. Built off a Bo Diddley rhythm, "I Want Candy" follows the team's typical production approach, featuring a huge drum sound (more often than not provided by New York session vet Herb Lavelle), plenty of room sound and reverb, and an offbeat, kinetic, and joyous energy that made the trio's productions sound big, full, and driving coming out of radio car speakers and juke boxes. The three only worked together for around four years, but as this delightful collection shows, they obviously had fun and didn't take all of this too seriously, and since they weren't trying to write a song that might earn them a place in the American Songbook, the records they made had a kind of goofy, bouncing energy that still seems fresh and immediate nearly 50 years later.(Steve Leggett, Allmusic)

Lawndale "Beyond Barbecue" 1986

A short lived psychedelic / surf-revivalist band which released two highly regarded albums for Greg Ginn's seminal SST Records label (also based in Lawndale, CA) in the mid eighties.

The second and final album by Lawndale doesn't make any astonishing advances from their first — but how could you improve on one of the best surf-fusion albums ever made? The band's trademark interlocking guitar melodies are as energetic and precise as ever, and the compositions are as brilliant and quirky as ever. Once again, there is one highly unlikely fusion of two artists' work — the version of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" with Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" — and once again it works like a charm. Lawndale sounds perfect here, and there is no clue that this would be their swan song. After the recording of "Beyond Barbecue," the band drifted apart, and though they sporadically reunited for concerts and even wrote some new material, none of it was ever released. ...Brazier's career began with university band Oktober; in 1975 he joined Dave McArtney and Harry Lyon to form Hello Sailor. Their self-titled debut album spawned classics 'Gutter Black' and Brazier's 'Blue Lady'. Inbetween Hello Sailor and his band The Legionnaires, Brazier recorded solo albums Inside Out (1981) — which included classic track 'Billy Bold' — Brazier (1987) and East of Eden (2004). Roland Kirk "Finest Hour" 2001

He was best known for being a blind jazz saxophonist who could play more than one wind instrument at once…

...Kirk played a number of musical instruments, mainly various saxophones, clarinets and flutes. His main instruments were tenor saxophone and two obscure saxophones: the stritch and the manzello. Kirk modified these instruments himself to accommodate his simultaneous playing technique. The idea of playing more than one saxophone at the same time occurred to him in a dream and he set out to make it a reality. Around 1970 he added "Rahsaan" to his name after hearing it in a dream. He is also noted for his circular breathing technique and was reportedly able to sustain a note for over an hour. - discogs

Chris's canadian-born wife Lynne is also a writer and performer of note. Lynne did quite a bit of performing in the late 70s & early 80s in the Auckland folk scene before she met Chris…

...She and Chris have produced two shared albums, "Together," in 1985, which features some of Lynne's early efforts at song-writing, and in1988, "Live in Concert". Lynne has also taken part in the production of several later Thompson albums. Now working full time as an accountant, she doesn't get much time to practise and perform these days.

"Spirit Of The Cramps" - Selections From The Vinyl Stack Of Lux And Ivy

A follow up to the extremely well-received Bad Music For Bad People. Including a host of wild and sleazy jazz and rock `n' roll, incendiary rockabilly and madcap subject matter from witches to scorpions, tight sweaters and skirts.

Some artists like to keep their inspirations under wraps but not The Cramps who've always been eager to spread the word. From listening to Poison Ivy & the late Lux Interior on various radio shows, I got the feeling that given the opportunity they'd far rather talk about obscure 45s than promoting the band. They were true collectors as this comp ably demonstrates. Stand outs include the slow burn of Kip Tyler's 'She's My Witch' that sounds like the template for much of The Cramps. The Chimes' 'Zindy Lou' is a shuffling doo-wop that sounds plain creepy. Felix & His Fabulous Cats' 'Savage Girl' is an instro that brings to mind Betty Page in her jungle outfit. The Versatones' 'Tight Skirt Tight Sweater' is doo-wop at it's most base. The meaning of 'Poontang' as given by The Treniers is 'huggin' and kissin' but the screeching sax break at the end of the track sounds like 'Poontang' means much more. Tic & Tog's 'Jibba Jab' is a monstrous slice of R&B - one of the scariest voices I've ever heard coming through my headphones. There's a few novelty songs that don't bear repeating but overall this is a top notch collection that fans of both The Cramps and 50s music will love. - Levy

…Chris is an old boy of Southwell School and has spent most of his life in and around Hamilton, where he recorded Hometown Voodoo in 1981; this album contains the song Hamilton, about the city. This song has become widely known due to a version played by Big Muffin Serious Band…

…Other Hamilton and Raglan musicians Chris has played with include Tim Armstrong and The Monday Club, Stan Jagger, The Dirt Band, and The Wild Allegations. After some success as a songwriter in America (where San Franciscan singer Meg Baird recorded 'The River Song', and Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold recorded 'Where is my Wild Rose?'), Chris relocated to Taupo, where he wrote new songs and performed occasionally at Cafe Ninety-Nine in Tongariro St. In December 2016 Chris recorded a new digital album called On High Street (by 'Chris Thompson, the Folksinger from Hell'), which was released on Bandcamp.com. Chris moved to Waihi Beach in December 2017 and has been playing at The Bowentown Cafe and The Porch. He is presently working with Hamilton-based Pinenut Records on the collectors vinyl edition of some long lost rock and experimental recordings made in Dublin in 1974. This album (Drunken Nights in Dublin) was released on L.P., E.P., 45 and CD at a release gig at Nivara Lounge on 24 November 2018, followed by a short concert tour to Auckland, Taupo, Tauranga and Waihi Beach. A new album, Woodsheddin' was released on Pinenut Records in 2019. In 2019, Chris Thompson returned to Hamilton, performing as a trio with Jordan Rex Carpenter (bass) and Alex Deane (congas), playing cafe gigs in and around Hamilton. Chris Spedding "Cafe Days" 1990

One of Britain's most versatile session guitarists, Chris Spedding's long career has seen him tackle nearly every style of rock roll to come down the pike, as well as sporadically attempting a solo career.

This is one of Chris Spedding`s strongest albums. It arrived four years after his equally impressive ENEMY WITHIN and contains 10 originals and a cover of Mose Allison`s "Parchman Farm." CAFE DAYS, like its predecessor, is filled with sly rhythmic tricks. The songs seem rather straightforward, and it`s with repeated listenings that the subtle powers really emerge. This is also perhaps his best-sounding work, with credit going to Steve Berlin (of Los Lobos) and Mark Linnet. Strong selections include the catchy "Put It on Hold" (which sounds like a cross between Mark Knopfler, David Bowie, and Dave Edmunds, and features Southside Johnny on backing vocals) and the characteristically driving title song. The set closes with the gorgeous "Portobello," a song that perfectly captures all of Spedding`s allure, from the guitar tone and ensemble interplay, to his own casually impassioned singing. from: http://www.overstock.com/

Chris Thompson "Echoes from the Pit" 1976

This Chris Thompson should not be confused with Chris Thompson, the vocalist from Manfred Mann's Earth Band, who also spent time in Hamilton, including attending Hamilton Boys High School...

…Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist Chris Thompson started out in the Kon-Tiki Folk Club in Hamilton, and other coffee houses. He found some initial success in Auckland with country and blues bands like The Stillwater String Band, The Medicine Show and The Myers Park Shufflers, and with regular television appearances on AKTV-2's 'On Camera' show in 1969. In the early '70s he moved to England, where he played in the band of Californian folk singer Julie Felix and played with British folk-blues legends Wizz Jones and Davey Graham. Chris moved to Ireland to live and became a 'musician-in-residence' at Trinity College, Dublin, opening shows for bands like Quintessence, Planxty and Horslips, and touring solo in Belgium in 1972. Chris also appeared on television in Dublin and Belfast. In 1973 he made his first album, which is recognised internationally as an underground classic, and is currently in its fifth edition. Back in New Zealand in 1974, Chris toured with bluesmen Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee; he maintained a lifelong friendship with Brownie, for whom he wrote the song "Letter to Brownie". "Letter to Brownie" later had a video directed by Adam Hyde, then a student at Waikato Polytech. It was filmed by Wayne Green, and presented to TVNZ as a demo. It engaged their interest and they re-shot the film in a bar in Auckland, screened it on 'The CV Show', and sent a copy to Brownie McGhee who enjoyed it thoroughly. In the mid-'70s Chris toured with New Zealand singer/songwriter John Hanlon, backing him up on stage and in the studio, and in the '80s Chris toured with Texan blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan. Chris married Canadian musician Lynne Bradstock in 1985; they toured successfully as a duo, and made two albums for Ode Records. Together they have one daughter, Lora, who plays guitar in the Hamilton band Empress. Regular gigs Chris has had in Hamilton include The Hillcrest Tavern Wine Bar (1982), Ruby Blacks Coffee House (2007), The Brothers Seafood Restaurant (1979), Cafe Centrale (1998) and La Commune Cafe (2008)… to be continued

Deniz Tek & Scott Morgan "3 Assassins" 2004 + Deniz Tek & The Golden Breed "Bermuda" 2013 - 7"/45rpm

Was unaware of this Scott Morgan collaboration with Deniz Tek (who's also worked with Radio Birdman, the New Race, Donovan's Brain and the indie rockers Deep Reduction). Tunes here that I liked best were the Rob Tyner (MC5) penned "Future Now", the total ass-kicking "Electrophonic Tonic", "Runaway Slaves", the power-house "Love And Learn", "Dangerous" and the two Stooges cover that Deniz Rek has chosen to close this title with - "I Got A Right" and "TV Eye". Recommended for fans of the MC5, Stooges and Radio Birdman that might be in the mood for something they've never heard. 'Three Assassins' is definitely well put together. More white-hot rock and roll from Scott Morgan and crew. Scott has been especially active in the last few years, having gotten together with Deniz Tek from Radio Birdman for a couple of projects. He's also teamed with The Hellacopters and has formed three bands: Hydromatics, Powertrane and The Solution. The Hydromatics perform High Energy originals and covers of GREAT Sonic's Rendezvous band tunes (many you can hear on this one-off conglomeration "Three Assasins". Scott is the perfect man to cover the SRB material, as he was up front sharing the spotlight with Fred "Sonic" Smith in the SRB! This will be a rare CD and it many not be the BEST of Scotts work in the last few years, it still outshines 99% of all CD's released in the last decade. Good Stuff. Try to find the Hydromatics CD's and you'll have the best Scott Morgan has to offer these days. - ByT. Smith
