The Vice Barons "Steel Blue Moods" 1997

This full length album is out by the best European non-surf instrumental band of the 90s. The title of this very strong and appealing album is Steel blue moods…
…It all starts with Surfsploitation, one of the very best Vice Barons compositions ever. Tommy Falcon's Like weird has been covered superbly and played in a very moody way, a perfect track for a sleazy special-agent-getting-seduced sequence in a red lit Tiki-bar. The next three tracks are known to me for years already, but finally they have been released officially. Shaft in Matongue has been funked up, but still sounds terrific, just like Time bomb, the famous Avengers VI tune and Big head which hasn't been altered that much. Only one stupid track on this album and accidentally it's the very first vocal track by this Brussels band. No way to behave (featuring Burt Vegas) sounds a lot like Forest fire by that jerk Lloyd Cole with his Commotions. Side B takes off with another splendid instro basher called 9.10. Fuel injection is the next one, and I think I heard this song years ago in their live set already, bu then again I can be wrong as many instrumental tracks are alike. Next comes Werwolf (Zentropa '45), a song written by Gary Usher and Roger Christian, the KFWB radio dj from L.A. who wrote a lot of great surf inspired tunes in the 60s. Hangover special is again an old Vice Barons tune, I guess, that has been put on this album. It's a typical organ driven Vice Barons track. Another fairly good instro is Unabomber but the very last track is a great rendition of John Barry's theme from The Persuaders. Barrence Whitfield & The Savages "Dig Thy Savage Soul!" 2013 + Barrence Whitfield & The Monkey Hips "Built Like A Rock" 2010 - 7"/45rpm

Those outside who've lost track of the rowdy rock and R&B outfit Barrence Whitfield & the Savages can be easily forgiven for not knowing they re-formed in 2010 and cut the greasy, grooving Savage Kings for Spain's Munster Records...
...Now that the band has signed to Chicago's scrappy roots music label Bloodshot, Dig Thy Savage Soul is solid proof that not all musicians mellow with age. If anything, this is the wildest, rawest, most frenetic record in their catalog. Original guitarist Peter Greenberg and bassist Phil Lenker obviously went back and listened to early Link Wray, Johnny Burnett & the Rock 'n' Roll Trio, Big Joe Turner, Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, and vintage punk rock. Whitfield's iconic voice is in excellent shape, preferring the more unhinged character in his instrument to fine effect. New Savages -- drummer Andy Jody and saxophonist Tom Quartulli -- add brazen energy and rugged, wily chops. Recorded in one day in October of 2012, these 12 cuts -- a fine balance of extremely well-chosen covers and originals -- cruise somewhere between 85 and 120 mph. Go no further than opener "The Corner Man," an in-the-red rocker, with unruly tenor sax and guest B-3 from James Cole with Greenberg's blasting guitar on top. Whitfield rasps and howls like a man possessed by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. "Oscar Levant," with its two-piece horn section (thanks to the addition of guest trumpeter Hitomi Taguchi), is careening R&B with killer double-time drums and Whitfield alternating between growl, scream, and soulful shouts. Their reading of Bobby Hebb's street-smart "Bread," had it appeared on an earlier Savages album, would have been less incendiary for the sake of "authenticity." The band doesn't stand on ceremony anymore -- and that's a great thing. Here, with the horns blaring and Beth Harris' wailing backing vocals, Whitfield and the band swagger, lurch, and strut chaotically, but never lose the groove. Their reading of "Hey Little Girl" is more Frankie Lee Sims than Professor Longhair (but there are hints in guest pianist Ricky Nye's rumbling left hand) channeled through punk and late rockabilly; it's one of Whitfield's finest performances on the date. The set closes with a completely off-the-rails reading of Jerry McCain's "Turn Your Damper Down," with the singer, Quartulli, and Greenberg all vying for control...

The Supertones "Going To A Rock & Roll Dance Party" 2014

Anytime The Supertones release a new album is primetime for surf-rock guitar fans. On the band’s 2015 CD Going To A Rock & Roll Dance Party, guitarist Tim Sullivan and company summon up 17 vintage instrumental rock classics played Supertones style...
...The Supertones have always featured top musicians and the current band seems to have hit a groove with Tim getting solid support from band mates, Simon Chardiet (bass, guitar, production), Seth Lipscher (guitars) and on drums Sammy Baker and Tommy Mattioli. Although clearly a great composer of the instrumental rock genre, on Going To A Rock & Roll Dance Party Tim Sullivan and company have chosen to cover 17 songs everyone seems to know and love including “Tequila”, “La Bamba”, “Yellow Jacket” and “Tel-Star” while including lesser known songs that work well played Supertones style. From the following March 2015 interview with mwe3.com Tim explains, “These are tunes we play at gigs that get people movin’ and groovin’. So far this has been a very popular record and people dig it." The CD artwork is colorful, featuring pics of the band in action. Although Going To A Rock & Roll Dance Party is a veritable party album filled with golden chestnuts from the heyday of surf-rock, there’s also another Supertones album worth hearing called All For A Few Perfect Waves that features 19 Supertones originals. As noted earlier, The Supertones are also planning another CD of all original music to be released in later in 2015 called The Sweet Ride. The Soft Boys "The Soft Boys 1976 - 1981" 1993 - disc 2

Just great, unusual, occasionally psychedelic pop songs. This is a fantastic collection of rare stuff from their early days (mostly).
Although their five-year career reaped little in terms of commercial reward, the Soft Boys ultimately emerged among the most influential and best-loved of all the early "alternative" acts, as that genre thrust its way out of the twin wombs of punk and new wave. A convoluted back catalog -- as tricky and twisted in its own way as the very best of the band's songs -- has long been one of the Soft Boys' attractions for collectors, and 1976-1981 must first be lauded for so effortlessly making sense of its labyrinthine convolutions. Two CDs, arranged in strict chronological order, not only resurrect a pair of early singles that defy the most energetic collector searches (1977's Give It to the Soft Boys EP debut and the following year's [I Want to Be An] Anglepoise Lamp 45), but also haul out a wealth of previously unreleased live and studio cuts, contextual buffers around the often vast steps the band was taking in between its regular releases. Thus, three demos recorded in Robyn Hitchcock's living room in early 1977 pave the way not only for the EP, but also for two further songs from the same session; both sides of the Anglepoise Lamp single are accompanied by two further songs intended for an accompanying, but ultimately abandoned, album; and a clutch of eight live tracks, also from 1978, depict the band marching through both its own idiosyncratic compositions ("We Like Bananas," "Return of the Sacred Crab") and some positively iconic covers -- Lou Reed's "Caroline Says" and the Monotones' "Book of Love" among them. And that's just the first disc -- move on, and the Can of Bees and Underwater Moonlight albums, the discs for which the Soft Boys are today most widely acclaimed, are explored in lavish detail, again with material drawn from both sides of the cutting room floor. There is, of course, considerable duplication between this and the sundry other Soft Boys archive projects out there (Invisible Hits is especially well represented), but the anthology's role is not to replace, but to highlight the absolute wealth of genius contained within those five years of striving. The Aqua Velvets "Reaching Shangri-La" 2008

What's most remarkable about "Reaching Shangri-La" is how mature Miles Corbin's vision as a professional musician has become. From concept to execution, the subtlety with which these songs are conducted will not fail to catch your attention. Aqua Velvets fans will be in Paradise with this new release. It Includes new, original songs by guitarist Miles Corbin and instrumental renditions of some classic songs by one of Corbin's favorite 60's groups, The Shangri-Las. Miles' sound is a return to the very first Aqua Velvets release, featuring melodic echoey guitars, drums, bass and an occasional Ennio Moricone keyboard. Beautiful and mysterious.
Aqua Velvets fans will be in Paradise with this new release Reaching Shangri-la. Including new original songs by guitarist Miles Corbin and instrumental renditions of some classic songs by one of Corbin's fave 60's groups the Shangri-Las. "Leader of the Pack" is astounding and cool, "Out in the Streets" is romantic and riveting.The title track "Reaching Shangrila" is pure magic. Corbin says this is the best AVs cd in a decade. Recorded in Corbins' mountain getaway Tiki Hut Studio in Paradise, Ca. The sound is a return to the very first Av release featuring melodic echoey guitars, drums, bass and an occasional Ennio Moricone keyboard. Beautiful and mysterious. The version of "Remember Walkin in the Sand" is absolutely gorgeous and in keeping with Aqua Velvet signature 'Guitar Noir' stylings. Five Stars!

Dirty Pretty Things "Waterloo to Anywhere" 2006

Carl Barat's reputation as the (slightly more) responsible Libertine continues with Waterloo to Anywhere, his first album with Dirty Pretty Things, which also features former Libs drummer Gary Powell and guitarist Anthony Rossamundo, who filled in for Pete Doherty on the Libertines' last few tours...
...The album plays like a cleaner, slightly more straightforward version of the mod-punk Barat contributed to his former band: tightly engineered blasts of sound like "Deadwood" and the limber, bouncy "Doctors & Dealers" get the album off to an impressive start, which should please Libertines fans burned out on Doherty's seemingly endless vicious cycle of arrests and addiction -- and, more importantly, on Babyshambles' erratic performances on stage and in the studio. The snarling wit that Barat brought to the Libertines is also in full force on Waterloo to Anywhere, particularly on the songs Barat claims aren't about his ex-bandmate, but "Evil Carl," aka his own negative traits and demons from when the Libertines were still around. They're definitely songs about leaving someone or something behind: Barat insists that "the enemy is right inside my head" over a beat that snaps and bounces, and wants to "put all the rumors to bed" on Waterloo to Anywhere's standout track, "Bang Bang You're Dead." But, though the album is almost nothing but stomping rockers and Dirty Pretty Things' energy never flags, it feels a little too predictable. The second half of the album particularly suffers from samey songwriting (although the final track, "Last of the Small Town Playboys," is a notable exception), and it's all too tempting to replace Waterloo to Anywhere's less-impressive tracks with the handful of coherent songs from Babyshambles' Down in Albion for a would-be Libertines reunion. Barat's music doesn't have the baggage associated with Doherty's brooding, poetic aspirations, but it doesn't quite have the same impact, either. As their respective post-Libertines albums show, Barat is capable of being very good with Dirty Pretty Things, and Doherty is capable of occasional brilliance with Babyshambles. But, for greatness (or at least the potential for it), they need each other. - Review by Heather Phares

Barrence Whitfield & The Savages "Savage Kings" 2011 + "Willie Meehan" 2011 - 7"/45rpm

...Barrence Whitfield was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on June 13, 1955. His real name was Barry White, and he relocated to East Orange, New Jersey with his family when he was young...
...He first took up singing while attending church, and in high school he learned to play the drums, and he handled vocals and percussion in local rock and soul bands. In 1977, Whitfield moved to Boston and enrolled at Boston University, where he majored in journalism. He landed a part-time job at a record store in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he was able to indulge his tastes for wild early rock & roll and rhythm & blues material. Peter Greenberg, a guitarist with the garage revival band the Lyres, was a regular customer at the shop, and he soon discovered that they shared similar tastes, and White could sing with the same passion and power as his heroes. At Greenberg's urging, they formed a band, and to avoid confusion with the noted soul singer and loverman Barry White, he adopted the stage name Barrence Whitfield (taking the last name from the great Motown songwriter and producer Norman Whitfield). With Greenberg leading the backing band they dubbed the Savages, Whitfield's high velocity vocals and the band's frantic attack made them a hit on the East Coast club scene, and in 1983 they released their debut album, Barrence Whitfield & the Savages, on their own Mamou Records. Reviews were enthusiastic, and Massachusetts indie label Rounder Records signed the band, releasing their similarly lively second album, Dig Yourself, in 1984...

Wild Sammy & The Royaltones "Speed Crazy" 2000

Yes, it is Japanese surf music - not quite the Beach Boys or Jan and Dean but definitely refreshing and original. Wild Sammy and the Royaltones rock out to the Wild Datsun (take that "Little GTO") and the "Running Donkey". And of course, there's "Pipeline" - not quite the "Pipeline" you expect, but exciting and fresh. So grab your best surf buddy and catch on a tsunami and splash about in the waves caused by Wild Sammy and The Royaltones. - By Patricia R. Andersen
This is the same band as the Royal Fingers, about whom there was some discussion here recently. So, a Japanese trio with a girl bass player. I first heard their song Echo Rocket 66 on the Continental zine compilation and thought it was really great, so I bought their Del Fi album 'Wild Eleki Deluxe' – and hated it. I put the CD away and forgot about it, until people started talking about it on SG101, at which point I pulled it out again and gave it another spin. Strangely enough, I got really into it at that point, and now love the CD. 'Speed Crazy' is pretty much as good 'Wild Eleki Deluxe', though it is more lo-fi in production. Most of it is lo-fi in a way that makes it sound kinda vintage (with a lot of distortion of the rhythm section), though there are two songs (Jet GT and Pipeline, both maybe live?) that sound really bad, like they were recorded on a seventies boom box. There is slight overlap between the two CDs, with four songs being on both CDs: Wild Datsun, The L.A., Running Donkey, Echo Rocket 66. But as far as I can tell they're different performances and recordings, so it's not that big of a deal.
The sound is very much Eleki – the Japanese instrumental surf sound of the mid-sixties. Eleki is more melodic and complex than the typical surf song, and requires more guitar technique. The eleki guitar style sounds like DD meets Nokie – heavily reverbed, somewhat overdriven and aggressive, with lots of pull-offs and hammer-ons and wild, extreme bends. And Sammy has totally mastered it. The guy is a monster guitarist. I bet you he could go head-to-head with Shigeo of the Surf Coasters and completely hold his own. Truly awesome chops, best demonstrated in the closing song Tsugaru Jyongarabushi, which is (after the short main theme) mostly a one-chord vamp with Sammy just going OFF. Most of the songs also have either an additional rhythm guitar or organ (or both), which definitely fills out the sound very nicely. As far as the other two members, the drumming is serviceable if not outstanding, and the bass playing is pretty good, sometimes adding some very cool parts. But what really matters is the songs, songs, songs, and this is where Wild Sammy & the Royaltones excel. There are no songwriting credits, but I think only a couple of the songs are covers of classic eleki (The L.A. and maybe Wild Jet Beach – both really awesome, very tough-sounding), with the rest being originals. Among those, Echo Rocket 66, Wild Datsun, Royal Tones No. 1, Aoi Hoshikuzu and Eleki Heiankyou really stand out, incredible stuff. But hell, every song on the CD offers something really cool. I highly recommend you all pick up this release. All the tradheads will LOVE it, and even the more prog-types may be able to get into more than a few of the songs. - IvanP

Miles Davis "You're Under Arrest" 1985

Miles Davis's final Columbia recording (other than Aura which was released several years later) includes his straightforward ballad interpretations of Cyndy Lauper's "Time After Time" and the Michael Jackson-associated "Human Nature," two songs he would play in most of his concerts for the remainder of his life...
...Other tunes (including "You're Under Arrest," "One Phone Call" and "Ms. Morrisine") were quickly discarded. In addition to Davis (who had regained his earlier chops) tenor-saxophonist Bob Berg, guitarist John Scofield and guest John McLaughlin get in a few decent solos on this competent but not overly memorable effort. - Review by Scott Yanow

The Soft Boys "Raw Cuts" 1984

The Soft Boys have turned out to be one of the most influential bands in shaping contemporary alternative music, though few are completely familiar with the quirky band's legacy. Formed in Cambridge, England in 1976 on the heels of the punk revolution, the Soft Boys eschewed the three-chord nihilism of punk and opted for a crude version of psychedelic/folk-rock that was well on its way out of fashion, but oddly, just on the cusp of a resurgence…
...Robyn Hitchcock recruited Cambridge musicians Morris Windsor on drums, Andy Metcalfe on bass, and guitarist Alan Davies, and recorded Give It to the Soft Boys in Hitchcock's living room in 1976. Davies was soon replaced by guitarist Kimberley Rew. The band released a single, "(I Want to Be An) Anglepoise Lamp," followed by the Can of Bees album in 1979.
While recording the follow-up, Metcalfe left the band and was replaced by Matthew Seligman. The new lineup started fresh and recorded Underwater Moonlight, the album that found the band trading psychedelic jams for a more straight-ahead jangle pop-guitar rock sound. The LP has become extremely influential in the guitar rock canon -- the Replacements, R.E.M., and the L.A. Paisley Underground scene all claimed it as a prime influence. The album launched a thousand bands, but it turned out to be the Soft Boys' swan song. Two more recordings were released posthumously: the 2 Halfs for the Price of One EP in 1981, and some early sessions compiled on Invisible Hits in 1983. The first EP was re-released in 1984 as Wading Through a Ventilator.
Windsor and Metcalfe began to collaborate with Hitchcock again in 1984 as the Egyptians, while Seligman became an in-demand session musician and Rew went on to form Katrina & the Waves. Hitchcock has had a prolific post-Soft Boys recording career, sticking to the unusual style he's forged and finessed since 1976, with 15 albums to his credit. - Artist Biography by Denise Sullivan

...There's not even a list of Production credits (transfers, sources of recordings; not even on the sleeves or the info sheet...
...Austin's name (listed as "Rock & Roll Scavenger" ) is it.
The sound is decent but not "hi fi" and the CDs are fun to listen to. For creativity in the idea and sele4ction this set gets five stars but no more than three for the packaging and lack of any notes. I'll stretch up and give it four stars but I sure wish Austin and Rock Beat would go back to the graphically gorgeous and well-annotated sets like their Los Nuggetz box.

The Aqua Velvets "Backflip Louie And The Pool Party Pagans" 2005

This is the 6th release by the Aqua Velvets, and is the most rootsy party album the band has ever done. while earlier cds have been more moody and movie soundtrackish, this one they did in the studio for pure FUN!! Perfect music for your next Pool Party! The band features the original songs of guitarist Miles Corbin, who also has 2 solo cds. The SF Chronicle described the group as " ..neo surf, spagetti western, secret agent, b-movie mambo music..".
Fun, upbeat tunes perfect for your next tiki pool party. The Aqua Velvets are known for their lounge/jazz surf style and this album adds a pool party feel to it. As always, the songs are of high quality and very original. This is probably the Aqua Velvets' most fun and upbeat album to date. While every song is enjoyable, the few that stand out the most include the playful Hey You With the Sneakers On...Out of the Pool, the hauntingly cool Bamboo Torches, and extremely loungy Out of the Sand and into the Swing. Since the 1st album, The Aqua Velvets have defined their own unique niche in the genre and this album does not disappoint. Reviewer: Alex Hoffman

Babyshambles "Sequel To The Prequel" 2013

Formed in spring 2004, just as the Libertines were beginning to fall apart, Babyshambles became the main vessel for Pete Doherty's poetic, chaotic rock when he was ousted from the Libertines for his increasing drug use and erratic behavior...
...Babyshambles released their self-titled debut 7" in April 2004, and settled on the lineup of Doherty, guitarist Patrick Walden, bassist Drew McConnell, and drummer Gemma Clarke by that summer. That fall, things went relatively smoothly for the band, with a sold-out U.K. tour and the release of a second single, Killamangiro, on the Libertines' former label, Rough Trade. But by December, the band had to cancel or halt shows because Doherty was unable to perform; one of these sudden cancellations sparked a riot at the London Astoria. Clarke left the band early in 2005 and was replaced with new drummer Adam Ficek.
Despite the band's ongoing tumult -- which included Doherty's arrest for allegedly assaulting and blackmailing documentarian Max Carlish (these charges were dropped that spring) -- Babyshambles began work on their first album. Teaming up with former Libertines producer Mick Jones, the band worked on the album through the spring and summer of 2005 and released the single Fuck Forever that August as a teaser for the full-length. Down in Albion was released in the U.K. that fall and Babyshambles toured in support of it, although the band canceled almost as many gigs as it actually performed. Doherty's wild behavior continued and his numerous run-ins with the law, which included being held on suspicion of stealing a car and possession of Class A drugs in early 2006, and being arrested three times in one day, made Babyshambles' existence as perilous as ever. Down in Albion was released in the U.S. that spring. The Blinding EP arrived in fall 2006. Shotter's Nation, Babyshambles' first full-length for EMI/Parlophone, arrived the following fall, boasting more polished production and focused songwriting.
After a slightly shambolic European tour -- with canceled dates due to Doherty's imprisonment -- in support of Shotter's Nation, Doherty went on to release a solo album -- 2009's Grace/Wastelands -- and kick-start an acting career. The following year, the Libertines reunited for a series of well-received shows, including gigs at that year's Reading and Leeds festivals. With Babyshambles in limbo, drummer Adam Ficek departed to focus on his own project, Roses Kings Castles, with former Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey stepping in to fill his space. In early 2013, Babyshambles returned to the studio with Stephen Street to record their third album. Recruiting Stereophonics drummer Jamie Morrison to fill the empty drum stool, the band released its third studio album, Sequel to the Prequel, in September 2013. Meanwhile, the Libertines reunited again in 2014, playing sold-out shows at London's Hyde Park and Alexandra Palace, leading the band to work on another album that was due in 2015. - Biography by Heather Phares

The Whys "Sanjyo" 2006

Where to begin... last year when Pollo was in Japan, we saw a band called The WHYs. We were immediately impressed. Briefly put, and with no offense to the Pamita and Leslita, The Whys are like the Neptunas, but they can play their asses off. There ya go...
...Ruiko (guitar) and Naomi (bass) dress in hula skirts and play garage surf inspired by the Trashmen and Dick Dale. Ruiko has also become a big fan of Shigeo Naka and apes alot of his moves. I guess to complete the Neptunas comparison, Yuta would be the Jeff Utterback skin pounder of the band...
The manager of The Surf Coasters signed them to his label, and produced their new CD. I thought it would be fun to bring them to the US, so I set up a tour for them in NorCal, SoCal and Las Vegas. The tour takes them very much on the same path as The Kilaueas and The Madeira, so I am hoping that anybody close by will come to the shows. I don't expect any one to fly in, but I know you won't be dissappointed if you come to the shows.
I'll be honest, their recorded material does not reflect the band very well. The first CDR "Surf Opera" is poorly recorded, not really warm enough to be called lo-fi, but it does show off The Whys great energy and creative arrangements. The new CD San Jyo, is too slick for a garage band, though the songs are better shown off. Shigeo Naka plays rhythm guitar on a lot of the tracks. Phil Dirt told me he had questions about some of the song writing credits, so check his review whenever Reverb Central comes back online.
Setting up a tour for a completely unkown band has been much more work than putting together the Surf Coasters tour. The Surf Coasters were actually pretty well known and having 15+ CDs released helped their notoriety. The Whys really have nothing except one song on a Sazanami comp, a CDR and a new CD. But, I think they are a great band, and I look forward to seeing every one of their 11 shows. I hope you will be intersted as well! - PolloGuitar / ferenc

The Vice Barons was one of the greatest ever instrumental bands that appeared in Europe since the birth of rock’n’roll and I easily compare them to The Bomboras from the US! Members of them are now in The Mighty Gordinis, another instro band from Belgium but driving into harder roots and style. They have released at least 6 45, one split 45 with Huevos Rancheros, two albums and one 10” MLP from 1993 to 1997. Most of their 45s are hard to find today but really worth to search for as they deliver great instro sounds deeply infected by Dave Allan, Dick Dale, biker movies and go-go girls!
