The Aqua Velvets "Nomad" 1996

While the Aqua Velvets have been at the forefront of the surf revival, their music is no slavish rehash of the genre's past glories. Instead the group offers an intriguing mix of surf stylings alongside a more complex menu of echo-laden Ennio Morricone-style spaghetti-Western soundtrack music, Latin rhythms, shimmering psychedelia, and ultrahip lounge lizardry. Nomad is their third and most accomplished effort, thanks to the sensual sway of the title track opener, the gradually building intensity of "Surf Nouveau," the evocative (and wonderfully titled) "Smoking Panatelas on the Blue Mediterranean Sea," and the roiling "Holly Tiki." And that's just the first four tracks. Overall, Nomad offers the perfect accompaniment for your next surfin' safari or even a quiet evening on the couch. - Daniel Durchholz
Despite their watery name, the Aqua Velvets don't spend the bulk of this album riding the waves. In fact, the title and desert cover art seem to point in the opposite direction. And although they still obviously love reverb and twang, the band, led by guitarist Miles Corbin, proves it is more diverse than previous albums might indicate. Sure, there's plenty of Duane Eddy / Ventures licks, but the Aqua Velvets introduce them to a world music palette. This is surf-influenced music that transcends its previous limitations. To emphasize that, the disc kicks off with the spaghetti Western atmospherics of the title track before the group gets its collective feet wet in "Surf Nouveau"'s more straightforward, Shadows-style approach. But they really wander off the beach on the bongo-infused slow burn of "Snorkle Mask Replica," where backwards tapes provide an eerie backing for the multiple, overdubbed guitar solos. Ennio Morricone is referenced often here, especially in the dusty "Return to Paia," a high, lonesome mood piece. "In a Spanish Mood" is just that, with a vague flamenco groove that snakes through drum-less percussion with Corbin's echo-heavy solo. With one foot on an American surfboard and the other on foreign soil, the Aqua Velvets show they are ready to push the envelope of their often constricting field without abandoning it. The closing tracks tread water, swimming in calm seas, yet not really going anywhere, although the reggae rhythm of "Shrunken Head" is a calm coda. But Nomad is an eye-opening, if not quite groundbreaking album in a genre that has far too few of them. - AllMusic Review by Hal Horowitz

The Soft Boys "Underwater Moonlight" 1979 - Disc 1

After recording the material that would later comprise the bulk of Invisible Hits, the Soft Boys recorded their masterpiece, the shimmering neo-psychedelic Underwater Moonlight…
...Essentially, the band didn't change their style for the record -- they merely perfected it. The Soft Boys don't hide their influences -- whether its the ringing guitars of the Beatles and Byrds or the surreal humor of John Lennon and Syd Barrett -- but they assimilate them, resulting in a fresh, edgy take on '60s guitar pop. Robyn Hitchcock's subject matter tends to be more explicitly weird and absurdist than his influences, as titles like "I Wanna Destroy You," "Old Pervert," and "Queen of Eyes" indicate -- even "Kingdom of Love" equates romance to bugs crawling under your skin. But the lyrics aren't the only thing that are edgy -- the music is too. The Soft Boys play pop hooks as if they were punk rock. "I Wanna Destroy You" isn't overtly threatening like their post-punk contemporaries, but with its layered guitar hooks and dissonant harmonies, it is equally menacing. Furthermore, the group can twist its songs inside out and then revert them to their original form, as evidenced by "Insanely Jealous." Although the neo-psychedelic flourishes are fascinating, the key to record's success is how each song is constructed around rock-solid hooks and melodies that instantly work their way into the subconscious. In fact, that's the most notable thing about Underwater Moonlight -- it updates jangling, melodic guitar pop for the post-punk world, which made it a touchstone for much of the underground pop of the mid-'80s, particularly R.E.M. - AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Libertines "The Libertines" 2004

The British press seems eager to add the Libertines to the canon of great British bands as soon as possible. Not just because their music carries on the traditions of previous greats from the Beatles to the Clash, or because of their involvement with already-legendary figures like Alan McGee, Mick Jones, and Geoff Travis, or because their peers in the British music scene just weren't as interesting to cover, but because the band's future always teeters between dazzling and dangerously uncertain...
...At the very least, they're guaranteed a spot in the history books as one of the most volatile bands ever to come out of the U.K. McGee, who has dealt with such notoriously difficult personalities as Oasis' pugnacious Gallagher brothers and My Bloody Valentine's hyperperfectionistic genius Kevin Shields, has called the Libertines "the most extreme band I've worked with." Co-frontman Pete Doherty's stints in and out of rehab, jail, and the band itself lend the Libertines an unpredictability that's both brilliant and frustrating. The Libertines' self-titled second album -- which was released when Doherty was out of the band, awaiting trial after pleading guilty to possession of an offensive weapon, a switchblade he picked up after fleeing rehab in a Buddhist monastery in Thailand -- ends up being frustratingly brilliant: it's not a pathetic last gasp from a band crumbling under the weight of its troubles, but it's not entirely a rallying, rousing cry in the face of these problems, either. Yet, considering how shaky Doherty's own existence, much less the Libertines', often seems, it's more than a little remarkable that as much of this album works as it does. Both Doherty and Carl Barat have grown as songwriters since Up the Bracket, and this album's best songs use Doherty's problems and the duo's strained camaraderie as fodder. On "Campaign of Hate," the single "Can't Stand Me Now," and "What Became of the Likely Lads?" they find common ground and sardonic fun in being inelegantly wasted: "Blood runs thick/We're thick as thieves." But most of The Libertines' strongest moments aren't necessarily its catchiest ones; rave-ups like "The Narcissist," a putdown of the "professionally trendy," and "Arbeit Macht Frei" fall flat, and "Don't Be Shy" is a draggy mess made more uncomfortable by Doherty's stumbling, burned-out vocals. However, when the Libertines don't pretend that the party is still going on and give in to their collective hangover, the album really takes shape. Interestingly enough, the band's darkest moments shine the brightest, and The Libertines' most ambitious songs seem to have been the easiest for them to pull off. "Last Post on the Bugle," "The Man Who Would Be King," and "The Saga" have a martial intensity and plenty of angry, self-aware lyrics ("You dig my bed/I dig my grave"), but these songs, "Tomblands," and "Road to Ruin" still feel more effortless than the album's stabs at lightheartedness. Ever since their first single, "What a Waster," the Libertines' experience has been about life imitating art imitating life, and The Libertines is an accurate, sometimes uncomfortable reflection of the band at this point: more scattered and unstable than they were on Up the Bracket, but also more ambitious and more interesting. If they can somehow hold themselves together without losing the tension that gives them their spark, The Libertines might prove that the people who called them "the most important band of their generation" weren't being hasty after all.

The Del-Vipers originally hit the Austin, TX scene during the belly scorching summer of 2010. Guitarist Ross Ott and drummer Sam Rich having left their full time touring schedules in previous musical endeavors were looking for something to push creativity to new levels while, you know, having a few beers. Original bassist Derek (Spooky Vam Peers) Miller completed the bill and together they took their love for a time when rock n' roll was fresh and exciting... to the beach! Influenced heavily by original guitar megaliths like Dick Dale and The Ventures as well as the more obscure underbelly of the genre and a propensity for the WEIRD, The Del-Vipers bathed themselves in reverb and hit the streets of Austin to bring their earth-shattering instrumental holocaust to the world. Playing everywhere from the historical Continental Club to annual bashes at the Texas State Drag Racing Championships, the 3-piece continued their wet & wild journey into the hearts & loins of surf lovers worldwide. With new bass wrangler Dave Cheeseburger Breakfast Hawkins onboard, the band hit the studio for a single day in January 14 to lay to tape what would become their compelling debut record, Terror of the Del-Vipers . The band self-released a Limited Cassette version of the album later that year but have recently joined forces with the almighty Double Crown Records to release it on Compact Disc for this the two-thousand fifteenth year of our lord (Dick Dale). It s safe to say there is no telling what's next in line for the fabulous Del-Vipers!

Bruce Johnston "Surfin' 'Round The World" 1963

Bruce Johnston was a member of the early 1960s pop/rock/surf duo Bruce and Terry (Terry being Doris Day's son Terry Melcher) and an on-and-off member of the Beach Boys. But back in 1963, he decided to strike while the iron was hot and recorded this strange surf-inspired "cash-in" album. (His timing was good--a year or so later, the first British Invasion would, sadly, bury surf music.) SURFIN' is mostly instrumental, featuring some cool surf-y guitar, drenched in reverb, and, unusual for the genre, interesting horn and keyboard parts. - cduniverse
Bruce Johnston had quite a prolific recording career prior to being tabbed as a Beach Boy of the future, and this self-produced effort was one of the more notable installments. From the "Twistin' U.S.A."-styled knockoff title song, this is a really fun album, despite the rigidness of the concept inherent in the title. Noisy tracks like "Hot Pastrami, Mashed Potatoes, Come on to Rincon-Yeah!!!" sit nicely next to the jazzy but rockin' "Surf Nova," the eerie but beautiful instrumental "Maksha at Midnight," the gas'n'go romp of "Capetown," and the experimental fuzz ravers "Jersey Channel Islands, Pt. 7" and "Virginia Beach." Even portents of Johnston's future rear their stylistic heads on "The Hamptons" and "Surfin's Here to Stay." Falling stylistically somewhere between the frat rock party noise of Surfers' Pajama Party and his later, more streamlined hot rod efforts with Terry Melcher, this is one fun, rockin' album indeed. - Review by Cub Koda

Barrence Whitfield & Tom Russell "Hillbilly Voodoo" 1993

It's appropriate that soul singer Barrence Whitfield has his mouth wide open and folkie Tom Russell has his closed in the cover photos of both this album and its follow-up, Cowboy Mambo...
... Throughout each disc, Whitfield holds the spotlight; Russell joins in the fun and also contributes some songs, but his main role seems to be as producer and fan: he clearly loves Whitfield's music and seems determined to help popularize it. And no wonder -- Whitfield's music is terrific stuff. If you had to slap a label on him, it would be country-soul singer, but he's soaked up far too many influences and turned them into something far too special for that tag to do him justice. The material -- alternately playful and emotional -- is uniformly first-rate, with highlights including Lucinda Williams' "I Just Want to See You So Bad," and Bob Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell," Van Morrison's "Cleaning Windows," Jesse Winchester's "Mississippi, You're on My Mind," and Russell's own "The Cuban Sandwich." - Review by Jeff Burger

The Mike Westbrook Orchestra's 1982 opus The Cortège, initially released as a sprawling three-disc vinyl set by Original Records (re-released on CD by Enja) and winner of that year's Grand Prix du Disque de Montreux, is an often stunning work of massive scope and an indisputable highlight of Westbrook's career...
...Originally commissioned by the Bracknell Jazz Festival in 1979 and subsequently performed at a number of European festivals, The Cortège is themed around the idea of a New Orleans funeral procession, from its dirges to its final exuberance, but this theme is used as a framework for excursions into territory that is pure Westbrook -- namely a marriage of creative jazz orchestra and European poetry written by Federico García Lorca, Arthur Rimbaud, Hermann Hesse, William Blake, and others. To be sure, the impassioned, theatrical, and -- to some -- even occasionally eccentric interpretations of the texts by singers Kate Westbrook and Phil Minton do not fit within what might traditionally be considered "jazz vocals"; both Westbrook and Minton draw mainly from European cabaret, musical theater, the avant-garde, and even opera. And they throw themselves into their performances, holding nothing back. They possess extraordinary range, control, and interpretive skill, and anyone open to a melding of jazz and European art music -- which honor each other here -- should find much to admire in the performances...to be continued... - Review by Dave Lynch

The Soft Boys "A Can of Bees" 1979

The Soft Boys, like so many other underground miscreants in the '70s, spent their formative years (unbeknownst to them) generating enough critical capital to earn much sought-after biographical adjectives like “influential” and “underrated.”..
Byrds, Beatles, Dylan, and Syd Barrett was both venerated and blown to smithereens on their 1979 debut long-player, A Can of Bees. More angular and jarring than the band’s beloved 1980 follow-up, Underwater Moonlight, Hitchcock, Kimberly Rew, Morris Windsor, and Andy Metcalfe sounded positively possessed, channeling both '60s progressive rock and late-'70s punk into an unholy guitar-driven onslaught fueled by Hitchcock's surreal lyrics: opening a record with a line like “feel like asking a tree for an autograph” is one thing, but backing up those words with an atonal, apocalyptic blues riff is another. It’s an often brutish affair that works more often than it should, with highlights arriving by way of the pounding and addictive “Leppo and the Jooves,” the incendiary “Do the Chisel,” and the impossibly dumb but nearly perfect pop gem “Sandra’s Having Her Brain Out.” A Can of Bees has seen its fair share of iterations over the years, often boasting multiple bonus cuts and conflicting track listings (the impossibly prolific Hitchcock would eventually become notorious for this with his solo releases), but they’re all more or less complete, and the material continues to inspire, even if it’s only a handful of ears at a time. - AllMusic Review by James Christopher Monger

The Libertines "I Get Along" 2003 + "Time for Heroes" 2003 - 7"/45rpm

A boon for U.S. Libertines fans who haven't sprung for their U.K. singles, the domestically released I Get Along EP collects the title track, some B-sides from their previous singles, and the new single "Don't Look Back into the Sun." "I Get Along" is one of the most straightforwardly rock songs from the band's great debut album, Up the Bracket; it's fun and energetic, but doesn't quite capture the impact of their sweet melodies and rough delivery the way the album's best songs do...
..."Don't Look Back into the Sun," however, is one of the band's best pop songs, subtler but just as catchy as their Up the Bracket work. It's a bittersweet song, and all the more so because at the time of its release, the band's co-founder, Pete Doherty, was no longer with the band, having skipped rehearsals and gigs, broken into bandmate Carl Barat's flat, and formed his own band, also named the Libertines (which he then changed to the more apt and less confusing Baby Shambles). This pugnacious eccentricity informs the rest of I Get Along's tracks, though; songs such as "Mayday," the B-side of the Libertines' first single, What a Waster, are sloppy and excited, revealing the drunken chaos from which the band evolved. "Skag & Bone Man" and "The Delaney," which come from the two parts of the Up the Bracket single, have lots of "yeah yeah yeah/no no no" choruses amidst the harmonies and cackling laughter. "Skag & Bone Man" sounds like an argument set to music; the song even stops for what sounds like a brief fistfight before dusting itself off and starting up again...

The Mighty Gordinis "Fueled on Fuzz" 2006

Thee Mighty Gordinis are a rawkin' surfin' garage band, formed in Brussels in 1998, by Eric Knoxx (ex-Vice Barons) Their playing style ranges from big beat, garage, surf instro and rock'n'roll, with those typical fuzzed and reverbed guitars and from time to time powered with an organ.
Belgium instru surf’n’roll that combines elements of trad. surf and garagerock. Plenty of b-movie soundclips (”Dolemite” etc.) break up the twang, and there’s some tasty bongo drumming going on at times. Adult cocktail music for rock’n’rollers? I like it, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary in the surf genre, like Los Plantronics. - Jens

American duo consisting of Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher. Together they worked with bands such as The Rip Chords.
This compilation is probably sourced from vinyl. It includes tracks by Bruce & Terry (Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher) and their various pseudonyms, including the Rip Chords, the Rogues, etc. Tracks date from 1963 to 1966. Bruce Johnston became a long standing (off and on) member of the Beach Boys. Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day) became a producer for The Byrds, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Gentle Soul, The Rising Sons and others. He introduced Brian Wilson to Van Dyke Parks.

The Morlocks "Play Chess" 2010 + "Time To Move" 2016 - 7"/45rpm

The Morlocks have been keeping the flame of garage band rock alive for some 26 years now. The band is based in L.A., where it has a small but rabid cult following...
...The band has no illusions of fame and fortune and hews steadfastly to the lo-fi, murky production quality of the mono recordings of the late '50s and early '60s. As you probably guessed from the album title and the cover art, which mimics the distressed cover of a beloved LP that's been taken down from the shelf so many times that you can see the record showing through the cardboard cover, this is a collection of tunes made famous by the artists who called Chess Records home, and a few that didn't. John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" first came out on Vee-Jay, and helped lay the foundation for rock. The Morlocks perform it as a big, rumbling rave-up that owes little to Hooker or the Animals, the band most youngsters copy when the play the song. Chuck Berry's "Promised Land" dumps all the Berry-isms from the guitar work and sounds like the Ramones backing the Beach Boys, with singer Leighton Koizumi snarling like the young Iggy Pop. Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." gets deconstructed into a grungy groove that almost dispenses with the melody in favor of a big, thundering wall of rhythmic sludge. They introduce Sonny Boy Williamson's "Help Me" with the opening riff from the Who's "My Generation" before dropping into a measured, back-alley grind. Little Milton's "Feel So Bad," later a hit for Elvis Presley, gets a forceful performance marked by Koizumi's almost unintelligible vocal and Bobby Bones' unruly guitar. - Review by j. poet

...In 1999 Spin Magazine printed an article that claimed that lead singer Leighton Koizumi had died, however this turned out to be untrue, and in fact, by this time Koizumi had reformed the Morlocks and was touring Los Angeles. The newly-formed Morlocks include Koizumi on vocals, Bobby Bones on guitar & backup vocals, Lenny Pops on guitar, Nick "The Canadian" on bass, and Marky on drums. In addition to reuniting, the band was also touring newly-written songs, with Koizumi commenting in 2006 on a possible live album to be released at some time in the future. - discogs
