"Hey RYP, I was at a thrift store today looking for a costume, and I found this old monster rock n' roll LP in pretty good shape. I haven't seen you post this one, so I thought you might like it. Happy Halloween!" - Billy Ktraxfromwax:
1) Weerdo The Wolf (Twist)
Starts off with a howl & grooves you into the music of the Stein man himself. After the initial guitar strumin & organ that famous Frankie mouth harp kicks in. Followed by his trademark sound effects of bangs & screams, this is a timid tune in the Frankie collection, but a nice start. Do we imagine a whacked out werewolf wearing blue jean overalls dancing around to the music howling & laughing, then ripping out the throat of a victim near the end? I do.
2) Goon River (Swim)
Frankie starts off by growling ‘Lets Swim’ & as kids we probably did. More sound effects this time including some favorite whistles, pops & some bubbling liquid of the Goon River itself no doubt. At one point I imagine eyeballs being scooped out of some sockets. Yummy!
3) A Hearse Is Not A Home (Frug)
Dig that crazy sax while listening to a helpless young thing being stretched on the rack. Well at least that’s what I see. Ah that girl screaming, and these were for kids folks. Then one of my favorite sound effect. Those clanging metal things. Like something with large pieces of silverware getting ready to eat. Is that girl on the rack dinner? Don’t know but those screams at the end don’t sound too good.
4) 3 Little Weirds (Monkey, Lindy)
Picking up the musical pace here as the ‘little weirds’ start chattering away. I don’t know but I picture 3 little rats doing the chattering. Whatever they are they continue on as slipping whizzing sounds pop in now and again. The little laughs & giggles enter in & out & at the end three loud bangs of their rat doors close, or were those giant weights squashing them?
5) Lullaby Of Ghost Land (Fox Trot)
The coffin lid opens & my favorite Frankie tune begins. Don’t know why but I just love this one. I even used it as part of a stage show & produced. It just sounds sneaky & detective like, like something you’d hear in an old dark house mystery where ghosts are spooking the houseguests. A few whistles & cranky effects within including a mysterious laugh. Great sax & organ!
6) Knives And Lovers (Swim)
Side Two starts off with a few female screams and your basic sixties styled sounding tune kicks in. Lots of spooky laughing & more screams throughout, and some rockin’ guitar here folks. It really makes you want to get up & dance!
7) Little Ghoul Blue (Mashed Potato, Shimmy)
Ah, time to take it easy on this one. Things finally slow down & you can rest those feet. Whoever the main vocal talent on these LPs is really does some cool stuff. From the goofy or spooky laughing to the odd conversation like jibber here again makes these tunes priceless & in a place of they’re own. That juice harp comes in at the perfect time near the end. Yeah man can you feel it?
8) Ghoul Days (Watusi)
Sharing the same name as a ‘Dracula’s Greatest Hits’ classic a wacky whistle & some ghostly moans begin this cool beat. A swift little ditty complete with laughs, silverware, & agonizing moaning. Ends ghostly and sounds as if the spirit takes off in a plane or is that a buzz saw?
9) Little Brown Bug (Hully Gully)
Something is being twisted to death at the beginning of this thing (sounds like a duck bird) only to lead way to a stupidly simple tune by sax & organ. Ah but it does seem to contain everything here from silverware, screams, & more cranking sounds, and is that a train I hear at the minute mark? Just take it & enjoy it.
10) Neck Twist (Twist)
We’re on our way to wacky territory. Someone loves to laugh here as we hear large footsteps walking around. I imagine a Frankenstein monster groovin to the music. Again some killer sax here. A gentleman screams & some final laughs is a great way to end this first album of the great Frankie Stein. See you next time!

The GoreHounds "Halloween Everywhere" 1987

Gorehounds were formed in Portland towards the end of 1985. The band's first gig was at Geno's during Jordan's Undead 30th B-Day Party. The band used the "Electric Jug" sound like the 13th Floor Elevators did in the 1960's. They were a mixture of Punk Rock, 60's Garage, and 60's Psychedelia.In 1985-87 The Gorehounds place was known as THE GORE MANOR. Lots of punks, bands, and fans stayed there and partied. This was one hell of a wild and crazy time. Lots of broken beer bottles, dirty needles, pot smokin, crack stinkin, and rip roarin mentalness. In the winter the house was so cold that water used to freeze in the sinks and toilets. Rats were living in my couch. And the refigerator was not to be opened except for more BEER. there were punk flyers and grafitti all over the place. It was the best and worst of times. When we finally sunk it was to hit rock bottom... While the band was around it was an original act that played around the NE Coast and Canada as well. There was always a party after a night out at Geno's the hip place to hang for cool music then. Geno's is still around with live music.

This is a comp featuring monster or horror themed songs, with old radio commercials for horror movies in between the songs. Check out this CD it's better than Halloween itself!!!I'll keep it short and just say that everything here is classic and the audio commercials are fabulous. It would get 6 stars out of 5 if it were a 2 c.d set because there are many more of these old "monster" hits in addition to many sequels. Buy this c.d. if you can find it. Our family starts playing it a lot throughout October and it just gets better every year. Route 66 Killers play a unique brand of cautiously optimistic music that occasionally verges on depressing, yet always fascinates and entertains. They write very good instrumentals with solid melodies. They have learned their three R's, playing with restraint, resignation and reverb. Both bands are highly original. - Phil Dirt at Reverb CentralThe Route 66 Killers were formed back in the year 2000, when four Russian serial killers met in a smoky ramshackle bar in the small mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona, just off of Route 66. Having escaped a Russian prison in Siberia, they fled for the United States. All share common interests: murder, voodoo, and surfing. Soon they went on to terrorize the inhabitants of Flagstaff with a series of grizzly murders and zombie-style surf tunes. The local law enforcement has been powerless in the apprehension of the gruesome four, who continue to leave nothing but corpses and mayhem.
The Route 66 Killers consists of the scum of the earth: there’s Sergei, the ring leader of the gang. Sergei was a hit man for the Russian mafia, and carried out 42 hits in Moscow before his eventual incarceration. His weapon of choice is the lead guitar. Boris, hailing from St. Petersburg, was known as the "Nozhe" or "The Knife" in his home town, adding 20 people to his list of victims before he was apprehended. His weapon of choice is the bass. Ivan or Ivan Gryohznii (Ivan the Terrible) comes from the small village of Niledovo north of Moscow, where his massacre of the entire village caught the attention of the world. His weapon of choice is the rhythm guitar. And then there is the Animal or Zhivotnoye. Not much is know of his origins. Coming from some remote area in Siberia, the Animal brutally killed 19 people with his bare hands in a two year spree. His weapon of choice is the drums.
The music of the Route 66 Killers is dark instrumental surf. When listened to long enough, the listener/victim slowly and painfully dies. However, there have been reports of the deceased coming back from the dead and craving human flesh. It is assumed that this marauding gang of murderers currently resides in Flagstaff Arizona, the focal point of an ongoing manhunt since their arrival here. "El Primitivo American Rock'n'Roll And Rockabilly" VA 1993

Sometime, around 1958, a record by a character called Bill Parsons came out on the Fraternity label. it was really recorded by Bobby Bare but that's a whole other story......The title was 'All American Boy' and basically said it all. The first lines were" You get a guitar and you put it in tune / You'll be rockin' and rollin' soon / Riding around in a Cadillac / Fightin' the girls offa your back". These words were a call to glory heeded by young men across the globe with Sears guitars, cheap 15 watt amplifiers and a drummer with a van. They hastened to cut-price, two-track recording studios with dreams of Elvis Presley glory and some deeply strange misconceptions of what constituted a hit rock'n'roll record.
Part of the problem was that the great ones made it all sound so goddamned easy. Elvis's vocal power might have been intimidating, but the likes of Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran brought such a deceptive simplicity to their work that it was possible for thousands of kids with sideburns, burning ambition and no talent to convince themselves that they could do it too.
EL PRIMITIVO is a collection of some of the ones who tried it in Nashville, Tennessee, between about 1956 and 1964. With baritone slurs stolen from Elvis and hiccups looted from Buddy Holly, they came to town and did their worst. Mel Robbins on 'Save It' thought he could borrow the teen-in-heat panting from Gene Vincent's classic 'Woman In Love'. Herbie Smith attempted a really bad Elvis and Chuck Howard seemed to believe he could create a fusion of the Coasters and Eddie Cochran on 'Out Of Gas' but wound up with a manic piece of hybrid pop chaos. The Embers' juvenile delinquent vocals on 'I Walked All Night' (my particular favourite) might have made them the Stooges' uncles if only the fuzz box had been invented to drown out the backing vocals.
With the exception of Mel Robbins, who became a respected session pianist, none of these guys found fame or fortune. Most probably went home and bored the shit out of every bartender and cocktail waitress they met for the next 25 years with stories about how they almost made it in rock'n'roll. Modern Lovers "Live" 1977

It must have been more than 25 years ago I listened to this album for the first time. It's one of these you must have in your collection. Songs like "I'm a little airplane" and "Icecream man" still lingered in my mind and over the years I trapped myself regularly I was humming or singing these songs when I was in a good mood. Now I can make every mood good! I put on this LP and the sun is shining again!What makes a great live album? A faithful reproduction or superior reinterpretation of a studio classic? Audience rapport? Great guitar solos? Fantastic new songs? All of the above? Have I got the album for you.
For post-Beserkley Chartbusters Jonathan fans, this is THE album to have. It kicks off with I'm a Little Airplane, which is available nowhere else. Until the applause kicks in at the end of the song, it is as tight as Jonathan's best studio recordings from the era. It's goofy lyrics (yes, he really is a little airplane), joined with fun riffs and a guitar solo so good that Jonathan requested a second one, result in a thoroughly enjoyable two minutes. The song immediately segues into audience banter where a heckler accuses Jonathan of wearing the same shirt for two consecutive nights. Of course, Jonathan objects! Fortunately, he is not thrown off form and counts into a version of "Hey There Little Insect" that is superior in every way to the studio version. If you don't know the song, it's everything its title promises. From there, the band moves on to their biggest hit, the instrumental "Egyptian Reggae." Doesn't this album sound fun already?
And I haven't even gotten to the marathon rendition of "Ice Cream Man" that closes side one of the old album. This is a far superior version to the studio recording that brings out all of the song's promise of waiting for the ice cream man on a hot summer's day when you were six years old. The fake endings of the song as the audience begs for more is the high point of the album and guaranteed to bring a dumb smile to your face.
Side two has a hard time living up to side one, but that's like saying side one of Abbey Road doesn't hold up to side two. Not much to complain about here. A guided tour to the land of dinosaurs, New England, South America, and Kookenhakens is more than most of us deserve. The final song, "The Morning of Our Lives," is so sweet-natured and kind; do the cynic inside of you a favor and give this song a listen. It will make you wish you never grew up.
All in all, this is my favorite live album by any artist. Jonathan's hero, Lou Reed, did well with "Rock 'n Roll Animal," but this is better. gitit and have a great time! - Steve Lanzarotta (California, USA)The Modern Lovers:

The Greenhornes "East Grand Blues" 2005

A lot of folks will likely hear of this group when they open for the White Stripes on their 2005 tour and that's a good thing. Live, the Greenhornes kick up a tasty garage rock sound that is a good match for the Stripes, but a bit different from what you'll find here. This EP is a nice little gem that swings from Beatlesque pop to scruffy garage rock, sometimes in the space of the same song.East Grand Blues EP exhibits the full versatility that The Greenhornes have to offer. Their music is a mix of modern day pop and alternative rock with a `60s feel to it. Their songs are guitar-driven while also relying on the percussion to bring it all together and while throwing in a tambourine to really give it that mood of yesteryear. The melodic "I'm Going Away" gives off a vibe similar to that of The Beatles, showing their more pop-oriented side. "At Night" is a more alternative sounding song and is lyrically driven. "Shelter Of Your Arms" is a standout song on this EP; it has a darker feel with strong guitar riffs and a heavy beat showing that deep down, this band is all about the rock. - Stephannie Depa (Synthesis.net)
