On its full-length debut, North Carolina trio Southern Culture on the Skids develops a high-octane mix of raucous rockabilly, R&B, surf, and punk influences that is unique and wildly exciting. From the most attractive HEE-HAW honey on the front cover-actually bassist/organist Mary Huff-to singer/guitarist Rick Miller's knowing, sly lyrics, DITCH DIGGIN' examines the subtleties of rural Southern culture with such unapologetic anthems as "Too Much Pork For Just One Fork," the delirious "Put Your Teeth Up On The Window Sill," and "My House Has Wheels." In less skillful hands, these lyrical preoccupations might seem like heavy-handed satire or mean-spirited attacks. But Miller, Huff, and drummer David Hartman, helped by kindred spirit/producer Doug Easley, obviously know and respect the region and its people. "Aliens Psychos & Wild Things" 2001 - vol. 2

The third installment of Arcania International's exhaustive overview of Tidewater/Richmond Virginia garage and psych from the mid-'60s is chock-full of bands that -- well -- no one has ever heard of...
...Like the folks at specialty labels like Gear Fab and Norton, Arcania recognizes the appeal of unknown, unsigned bands from yesteryear. And though much of this material is extremely lo-fi (Velvet Haze's fuzz-drenched "Last Day on Earth") and amateurish (Banana's disastrous "I'm a Man"), there are several gems to be found. Some tunes, like Wilson Castle's "Party" and The Bosom Blues Band's "Hippie Queen" reveal legitimately sincere attempts at musical sophistication, posing the question; what could some of these bands have accomplished with a skilled producer and first-class recording gear? The surprisingly good CSN&Y-soundalike psych-ballad, "Cherry Road," by a band called Plauge is just another fine example of this. What is, perhaps, most interesting about these bands, though, is to hear their imitation of the more popular sounds of the day. Shades of the Animals, Yardbirds, Jefferson Airplane, Iron Butterfly, and the Byrds are clearly evident. And while this collection proves that a fuzz box in the wrong hands -- or at the wrong feet -- can be a room-emptying disaster, there is no denying the exuberance, innocence, and bittersweet naivete of rock's under-the-radar bands of the 1960s. Compilations such as this, however, are perhaps most interesting to the un-initiated as -- at best -- social anthropology. This is not for the average vintage rock enthusiast, but dive right in if you are looking for something slightly strange but surely fun. - Review by John Duffy

The Dukes Of Stratosphear "25 o'Clock" 1985

“When I was a kid I wanted to be in a group, and that group are The Dukes.” - Andy Partridge, Swindon. December 1987.
If you are a fan of psychedelic rock then this album is a must have. A very rare find on record, it is worth every second of your time to obtain a copy. I picked up this album sifting through a stack of LP's in an auto bodyshop. Having never heard of the Dukes of Stratosphere and feeling skeptical of the 1985 release date, I finally decided that it was worth the 50 cents to buy out of pure intrigue. (Not to mention the fantastic album art.) So I took it home and gave it a spin. After 30 seconds I was blown away. Opening with the title track,"25 O'Clock", the album blasts off immediately and takes you back to 1967. "Love Explosion" and "Mole from the Ministry" are two more of the six far-out tracks on this oddity of an album. Influenced strongly by late Beatles and very early Pink Floyd, XTC wrote the best music of their careers under the top secret alias, Dukes of Stratosphere. If only more musicians droped acid instead of blowing all of that coke in the 80's; then maybe we wouldn't have all of these Yuppies running about today.
These is a real fun album doing a good impression of psychadelia in rocky/poppy late 1980's sort of way. It is actually XTC behind this. I had it on tape when it came out because I was a huge XTC fan. It was actually a really nice surprise because it is very different from XTC's normal output at the time - which was good too. While the band has changed significantly since their debut, the Muffs' second album, Blonder and Blonder, sounds nearly identical to their first...
...It's all a brightly colored collection of fuzzed-out guitars, Kim Shattuck's screaming pop melodies, and punk rhythms, delivered with just the right touch of abandon and just the right amount of polish. Even though the band is a long-time friend of Green Day's, the repetition of the formula hits a little too close for comfort. Shattuck's songs aren't quite as strong as Billie Joe's, yet her hooks catch hold often enough to make Blonder and Blonder enjoyable for most fans of punk-pop. - Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The High Llamas "Snowbug" 1999

Sean O'Hagan makes records the way some people make miniature models, slaving over the little details. At first, it's hard not to be impressed by the glittering surface, but after a while -- either upon closer examination or repeated exposure to similar works -- the initial thrill fades away, and the actual content isn't that impressive...
...But that's not the only reason why Snowbug, the fifth full-length album by O'Hagan's High Llamas, feels like their weakest effort yet. With Snowbug, O'Hagan is utterly complacent, perfectly content to roll out his old bag of tricks, whether it's something he used on Hawaii or his production work for Stereolab. If you haven't heard his other work, perhaps the little trademark flourishes will be charming, but this is the least involving record he has yet cut, either as an artist or producer. All the melodies are self-consciously designed to be frothy and hummable, yet none of them wind up being memorable, largely because more time has been spent on the recording than the writing. To a certain extent, that's been true of his previous records, but here, it seems as if he's spending all his energy creating a painstakingly detailed replica of his past work. That may be enough for some fans, those who simply revel in the sheer construct of the sound, but it sounds increasingly like a dead end for O'Hagan. At one point, there was charm and invention to his music, even if it was merely an homage, but now that it's become the patented High Llamas sound, it's clear that he's boxed himself into a corner, and worse, he doesn't seem that concerned about it. The end result may be something to admire based on one quick glance, but upon closer inspection, it's too easy to see the seams in the construction. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Southern Culture On The Skids "Peckin' Party" 1993 + Southern Culture On The Skids With Don Howland "4 x 7"/45rpm 1993

"I noticed you've been in a Southern Culture on the Skids mood lately, so I thought I'd pass this on. It's their 1993 EP, "Peckin' Party." I ripped it from the limited edition vinyl pressing, but it seems they also released it on CD. That's OK, the vinyl sounds better. (Don't you hate it when they do that, though?). This band rocks and Peckin' Party is fine example of their down-home lyrics and clever guitarmanship. Mary Huff and Dave Hartman are the tightest foundation for Rick Miller's reverb-soaked, tremolo-saturated, whammy bar-whipped concocation of hillbilly, funk, surf, and rock. Worthwhile just for their remake of "Daddy was a preacher and moma was a go-go girl" - from amazon
The 3 studio recordings on this 6-song EP are top notch, and as good as anything on Ditch Diggin' (which may be their best album alongside Dirt Track Date). The live recordings are a bit murky, but the performances are excellent. The studio recording of "8 Piece Box" (the fried chicken song!) is slightly different and, in my opinion, better (more true to the way they perform it live) than the version on Dirt Track Date. If you can find it, get the 10-inch vinyl pressing on egg yolk colored vinyl! - from amazon

Electric Ballroom October 1996. Dave crows at the end of their set, "we're back, get used to it!" And they discovered that they really wanted to be back, that it could be fun and meaningful once more…
...Mark Perrodin was hesitant to re-commit himself full-time, and so guitarist Robin Johnson (Gentlemen After Dark) came on to play bass that winter, and the band played more frequently around Tucson through the fall and winter of 1996. In March 1997 they made a late-night, jam-packed appearance at SXSW, and then won the dubious-but-emotional award of Best Reunion Band at the Tammies (Tucson Area Music Awards). They were writing new songs, and ventured to slip the new material in wherever they could. Buoyed by the reception of crowds everywhere they played and their re-found confidence in themselves, they returned to the studio in May of 1997 and began the recording process for their first new release in nearly five years, which stayed unnamed almost until street date.
The re-emergence was a long time coming, and the grass roots support reappeared as soon as the buzz got around that the band was on again, but even this phase was plagued with its own pains and tribulations; bassist Robin Johnson encountered serious personal and legal difficulties and was out of the band by July 1997. The Rubies soldiered on with help from Ken Andre of the El Paso band New Texicans, who alternated gigs with Mark, and eventually, Mark Perrodin made the decision to return to the fold. The local and regional touring continued. The album was slowly getting made.
Finally, in October 1998, after toying with working titles and last-minute track changes and re-mixes, the Sand Rubies released their first studio album in five years, titled with their entire tongue in cheek, "Return of The Living Dead", on Blue Rose. In January 1999, the band hit the German stages and played sold-out shows - the best-attended shows ever in Blue Rose history. - Blue Rose

"Aliens Psychos & Wild Things" 2000 - vol. 1

This compilation follows in the vein of many similar regional '60s garage/psych collections that surfaced towards the end of the 20th century, thanks to a combination of ever deeper interest in obscurities and the general proliferation of cheap CD runs for a small but obsessive market...
... Like the best of the bunch, from Nuggets on down, a combination of liner notes, photos, and general stories provides a good amount of the appeal. This particular disc focuses on bands from the Tidewater area of Virginia, named after three of the groups featured here. All are pretty well unknown outside of the occasional appearance on a similar comp or two, and generally speaking the performances are an obvious mix of derivative originals and good-spirited covers dedicated to raising a fun cheap racket, like so many other regional hits and misses of the era. So coming to this for revelations isn't at all a good idea, but listening in for the heck of it often turns up some rough and ready fun. The higher octane numbers make this a good party disc and the various ballads are sweet enough, and as the compilers are proud to say, it's different from the regional "beach music" that the area is known for. Wild Thing are probably the most notable of the bunch, not only for their mighty fine "Weird Hot Nights" (dig the crazed laughs on the breaks) but their utterly insane look of huge silver pompadours and general alien decadence. It must have taken sheer chutzpah to even think of a look like that in 1966. Another noteworthy cut is from the Electrical Banana -- it's a fair cover of "There She Goes Again" by the Velvet Underground that suddenly breaks into a peppy, kick-up-your-heels ending. Not only was it probably one of the first remakes of that band ever, the actual recording was done via a gas-generator powered deck in Vietnam, where bandleader Dean Kohler, veteran of the Satellites (also featured on this collection) had ended up to serve his tour of duty! - Review by Ned Raggett

L.A. outfit created slap-happy pop punk with ample hooks, buoyed by the dynamic vocals of Kim Shattuck.
The recent passing of Kim Shattuck compelled me to relisten to this underrated Pop Punk release and it still retains its charm and appeal. Pretty catchy melodic rockers punctuated by Shattuck's bratty and throaty vocals make this quite a cruise from start to finish. One li'l nugget that slipped off the radar during Alt-Rock's glorious heyday this three chord pogo party is ripe for rediscovery. - The Perfect Note

Miles Davis "Kind Of Blue" 1959

Kind of Blue isn't merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it's an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album...
...To be reductive, it's the Citizen Kane of jazz -- an accepted work of greatness that's innovative and entertaining. That may not mean it's the greatest jazz album ever made, but it certainly is a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. Why does Kind of Blue posses such a mystique? Perhaps it's that this music never flaunts its genius. It lures listeners in with the slow, luxurious bassline and gentle piano chords of "So What." From that moment on, the record never really changes pace -- each tune has a similar relaxed feel, as the music flows easily. Yet Kind of Blue is more than easy listening. It's the pinnacle of modal jazz -- tonality and solos build from chords, not the overall key, giving the music a subtly shifting quality. All of this doesn't quite explain why seasoned jazz fans return to this record even after they've memorized every nuance. They return because this is an exceptional band - Miles, Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, and Wynton Kelly -- one of the greatest in history, playing at the peak of its power. As Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording. Davis laid out the themes and chords before the tape rolled, and then the band improvised. The end results were wondrous, filled with performances that still crackle with vitality. Few albums of any genre manage to work on so many different levels, but Kind of Blue does. It can be played as background music, yet it amply rewards close listening. It is advanced music that is extraordinarily enjoyable. It may be a stretch to say that if you don't like Kind of Blue, you don't like jazz -- but it's hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collection. - Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The High Llamas "Lollo Rosso" 1998

Under the direction of multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and arranger Sean O'Hagan, the High Llamas have developed a very specific sonic fingerprint -- Baroque '60s melodies, sweeping orchestral strings, and warmly bleeping vintage synths all commingled in smooth harmonies -- that helped define the indie sound of the '90s and has proven to be influential to quite a few artists in the decades that followed...
...The group released albums throughout the decade that balanced Steely Dan-styled soft rock songcraft (Gideon Gaye), circular arrangements (Hawaii), and trippy easy listening music (Cold and Bouncy) but never strayed far from O'Hagan's original idiosyncratic template. Later albums did see O'Hagan making some stylistic leaps, such as 2003's mostly acoustic Beet, Maize & Corn and 2016's theatrical Here Come the Rattling Trees. After O'Hagan released his second solo album, 2019's Radum Calls, Radum Calls, the High Llamas returned with Hey Panda in 2024, a recording unexpectedly influenced by mainstream pop and R&B sounds. - J. Los Kahunas "Otro Reverberante Encuentro Con Los Kahunas" 2007

Los Kahunas is a quartet of musicians who call Argentina home. The band makes its home in Buenos Aires where it has made a name for itself by being one of only a handful of bands making surf rock. The band formed in 2004 as lead guitarist Big Papu Castaniero, rhythm guitarist Antonio Carlos, bassist Damian Baldi, and drummer Alexis B came together to make their own version of Surf-Rock...
...This [their 2nd long player] album is split between band originals written by Big Papu Castaneiro and several cover versions of songs by the likes of The Astronauts, The Lively Ones, and of course, The Ventures. While the band handles the cover tunes with skill, the original songs by the band are what shine on this release. Songs like 6G15 and California Kustom bring to mind The Ventures when they were in their peak of popularity.
