"Desperate Rock'N'Roll" Vol. 13
Barris still goes off to Balboa and places like that...
...He likes that scene. Last year at Pacific Ocean Park he noticed all these bouffant babies and he got the idea of spraying all those great puffed-up dandelion heads with fluorescent water colors, the same Kandy Kolors he uses on the cars. Barris took out an air gun, the girls all lined up and gave him fifty cents per, and he sprayed them with these weird, brilliant color combinations all afternoon until he ran out of colors. Each girl would go skipping and screaming away out onto the sidewalks and the beaches. Barris told me , " It was great that night to take one of the rides, like the Bubble Ride, and look down and see all those fluorescent colors. The kids were bopping (dancing) and running around." The Bubble is a ride that swings out over the ocean. It is supposed to be a satelite in orbit.
"But the fellows sky-diving got the best look as they came down by parachute."
In 1948 Petersen put on the first custom-car show in the Los Angeles armory, and this brought customizing out into the open a little. A wild-looking Buik Barris had remodeled was one of the hits of the show, and he was on his way too... Kim Fowley & Ben Vaughn "Kings Of Saturday Night" 1995
Fowley: "Ben Vaughn is the American Nick Lowe with a Sam Phillips brain. He's got the pocket down, the mix of rockabilly and folk-rock... As for the folk-rock aspects of the music tracks, [remember that] I co-wrote 15 songs for The Byrds out of five albums. Leo Kottke and Cat Stevens both recorded the songs.
"The unlikely duo of Kim Fowley and Ben Vaughn joined for 11 bendy and bluesy tracks on Kings of Saturday Night. Fowley, who contributed all of the vocals, and Vaughn, who contributed all the instrumentals, have a sound that resembles where the Doors might be if Jim Morrison had stuck around; older, sadder, and wiser. With songs about drugs, sex, and life, Kings of Saturday Night is a diamond in the rough.
Though younger, Vaughn is no stranger to the studio, having recorded four albums for Restless/Enigma Records. Vaughn has also worked on many film and T.V. projects, and compiled and annotated the acclaimed Johnny Otis collection, The Capitol Years.
The album is a coast-to-coast collaboration between the Hollywood-based Fowley and the New Jersey-based Vaughn. Vaughn cut instrumental tracks and sent them to California, where Fowley cut his vocals.
Says Fowley, "I sang to these pre-recorded tracks. I put vocals on and then sent the tapes back to Ben to mix. I like making a record this way...I had a John Fogarty version of Slim Harpo sitting in The Standell's studio that was transmitted back through time into a Louisiana swamp, with Cajun visions of Spanish goddesses. The Len Price 3 "Rentacrowd" 2007
On their Wicked Cool Records debut, RENTACROWD, The Len Price 3 delivers fourteen nuggets of raw garage rock. The band was born in the back room of a pub in the heart of the Medway Delta, UK, and they burst on the international scene with their 2005 debut album, CHINESE BURN (also now available on Wicked Cool). - amazon

Although Them was the only group from Belfast (indeed, the only group from Ireland) who made an international impact in the mid-1960s, there were several other bands from the area playing R&B-influenced rock. 27 tracks from nine such outfits (including a couple of songs by Them) are found on this compilation, the odd-looking title selected in honor of the Maritime Hotel where Them played shows and built their following. Taken as a whole, it's a solid and gutsy platter that makes a good case for Belfast having developed its own regional take on the British R&B sound, even if Them were clearly the best of the bunch by a football field. There's often (though not always) a sullen, nasty, lean edge to the vocals and arrangements, whether the material is R&B covers or originals that are thinly derivative of American R&B. The sandpaper vocals that Van Morrison used on his most aggressive performances (such as Them's debut single "Don't Start Crying Now," which kicks off the compilation), as well as the hungry-sounding guitars and sinister organ riffs that also characterized much of Them's discography, are all present to some degree in other artists on this anthology. That's especially true of the Wheels, who sound almost like Them themselves on "Road Block," with its "Mystic Eyes"-inspired guitar and organ. It and the magnificent, punky "Bad Little Woman" (covered by the Shadows of Knight in the US) have appeared several times on reissue collections of British Invasion rarities. Here, the sound is much better, although the other ten Wheels tracks on the album (including everything from their singles and five previously unreleased cuts) aren't on the same plane. (Indeed, with 12 of the 27 songs, the Wheels could almost be considered the featured artist here.) Much of the rest of the material is taken from a various artists LP from 1966, Ireland's Greatest Sounds: Five Top Groups from Belfast's Maritime Club, and those cuts sound thinner and less imposing than those of Them and the Wheels, though the Luvin' Kind's "Answers Please" is pretty tough blues-rock. The Kaisers "BEAT IT UP!" 1995
Frozen forever in the snapshot moment before the Beatles broke and they still toiled on speed and booze and rock & roll in Hamburg nightclubs, Scotland's the Kaisers made a career of slavishly accurate, atavistic Merseybeat…
…That they did it with style as well as requisite substance is amply proven on Beat It Up! The band's exuberance on such numbers (among the mix of originals and covers) as "Whatcha Say?," "She's Gonna Two Time," and "Lets Stomp" (as well as the requisite cover of Chan Romero's "Hippy Hippy Shake") make two things perfectly clear: the Kaisers have no intention of stretching out musically, keeping their Beatle boots firmly planted on the Merseyside, and if you dig the Beatles' dueling, harried shouts on their cover of the Isely Brothers' "Twist & Shout," you'll likely not care how original the Kaisers are. They get the spirit right, much like Billy Childish's early band, the Milkshakes, did ten years before and more than Beatlemania ever did. The playing is six-practices-a-week tight, and the production (it was recorded at favored Childish studio Toe Rag) captures a live atmosphere while assuring that you hear every absolutely, perfectly great, un-original guitar line, drum fill, vocal harmony, and wild shout. - AllMusic Review by Chris Handyside

However, at 63, more important issues came up in the last few months. I am off to Western China, to be precise, Urumqi and will start cycling back to Europe and probably to Morocco. Yes I know I didn't post much the last months, due to work here in Bulgaria but now it's time to move back on what I love the most. I always thought music was my first love, and it would be my last and it still is. However, the call of the wild is stronger, I need to fulfill a dream from 1997, cycling in Central Asia. For those interested, check my fundraiser post. I know I am off topic but I hope RYP will allow me this only time to share it. ...The situation is a lot like that today, except that customizing is beginning to be rationalized,..
...in the sense Max Weber used that word. This rationalized, or efficient exploitation, began in the late forties when an $80-a-week movie writer named Rbert Petersen noticed all the kids pouring money into cars in a little world they had created for themselves, and he decieded to exploit it by starting HOT ROD MAGAZINE, which clicked right away and led to a whole chain of hot-rod and custom-car magazines. Petersen by the way, now has a pot of money and drives Maseratis and other high-status-level sports cars of the Apollonian sort, not the Dionysian custom kind. Which is kind of a shame, because he has the money to commission something really incredible. Up to that time the only custom-car show in the country was a wild event Barris used to put on bereft of any sort of mid-wifery by forty-two-year-old promoters with Windsor-knot ties who usually run low-cost productions. This car-show was uterly within the teen-age netherworld, with no advertising or coverage of any sort. It took place each spring - during the high-school Easter vacations - when all the kids, as they still do, would converge on the beach at Balboa for their beer-drinking-Fasching rites, or whatever the Germans call it. Barris would rent the parking lot of a service station on a corner for a week, and kids from all over California would come with their customized cars. First there would be a parade; the cars, about a hundred fifty of them, would drive all through the streets of Balboa, and the kids would line the sidewalks to watch them; then they'd drive back to the lot and park and be on exhibit for the week... The A-Bones "I Was A Teenage Mummy" 1992
The New York Times described the band as "dedicated rock revivalists," noting "The A-Bones include Miriam Linna and Billy Miller, proprietors of Norton Records, which worships rockabilly, 1960s garage and anything having to do with that most cartoonish rock archetype: the juvenile delinquent in a leather jacket." The band also features Mike Mariconda, Mike Lewis (a founding member of both the Lyres and Yo La Tengo), Bruce Bennett, Marcus "The Carcass" Natale and Lars Espensen, with Miller, Linna, Bennett, Natale and Espensen playing on the bulk of the band's recordings and for most of the band's touring life...
...If you were going to make a low-budget black-and-white horror flick about a pack of leather-jacketed JDs and a high-school cheerleader turned into one of the Egyptian living dead, who would you hire to do the music? Filmmaker Christopher C. Frieri asked himself that very question and wisely chose New York's loud and proud rock & roll purists the A-Bones to score I Was a Teenage Mummy, and the band whipped up nine appropriately crazed tunes for the occasion. If the resultant album isn't at the top of the A-Bones heap, that's mainly because it's a bit on the short side and leans too heavily on instrumentals, but the group is in fine and rowdy form and what's included is cool stuff. "Mum's the Word" is a funny but savage "Surfin' Bird" variation, "Kashmiriam" is a moody instrumental with fine sax honking from Lars Espensen, Handsome Dick Manitoba makes a memorable guest appearance on a growling cover of the Coasters' "Little Egypt," and "Oh Wendy (Let's Stay Out All Night)" is suitable for submarine race watchers everywhere. The best A-Bones records sound like a wildly rockin' beer bash contained on plastic, and on the finer moments of the I Was a Teenage Mummy original soundtrack, you can practically smell the Budweiser. And that's a compliment. [Norton Records upgraded the album to CD in 2006, and helped remedy the short playing time of the original edition by including two early EPs, Tempo Tantrum and Free Beer for Life!, as bonus tracks.] - by Mark Deming

Willem Breuker Kollektief "In Holland" 1981 - disc 2
Simply put, this is the finest album ever released by the Willem Breuker Kollektief as a jazz tentet (as opposed to the repertory ensemble they later became). In Holland contains the most creative orchestrations, and the most thrilling solo work by the Kollektief, and ranks among the best jazz albums of the '80s. Two of the songs here ("Tango Superior/Interruptie" and "To Be With Louis P.") were released on the compilation disk The Parrot, but the remainder were only available on vinyl as of 2001.
The second LP consists of four compositions, including a concertino by an obscure 17th century Swiss composer, and a ferocious reel called "Hopsa, Hopsa" that builds up, morphs, and goes bananas. It's an album highlight, featuring a breathtaking performance by WBK, and composed by the newcomer (who'd stick around) pianist Henk de Jonge. Also included is one of Breuker's most beautiful and moving compositions, "Marche Funèbre" (from his musical production De Vuyle Wasch, or 'Dirty Laundry'), whose themes are at once rich, somber, romantic, and inspired. The second LP consists of four compositions, including a concertino by an obscure 17th century Swiss composer, and a ferocious reel called "Hopsa, Hopsa" that builds up, morphs, and goes bananas. The Kaisers were a Scottish beat band formed in 1992 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The band recorded several albums and singles under a number of record labels, including No-Hit Records, Bedrock Records, Wild Wild Records and Get Hip Records. Their final album, Shake Me! was released under Get Hip Records. Former members have been associated with The Bristols and Janey And The Ravemen since the disbanding of the group...
...The Kaisers began playing early rock and roll classics and after developing their traditional sound further, they established themselves as a band in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1992. The band subsequently signed to the London label No Hit and began working with the music producer Liam Watson at Toe Rag Studios in Shoreditch, London, where they quickly released their first album, Squarehead Stomp!, in 1993...

...Not long after the promotion of their first record, they made several television appearances—including a spot on the NB Television Show in Scotland. In 1994, In Step With The Kaisers was released, plus an EP called Alligator Twist, which included tracks that were not featured on either of the previous albums. To promote the record they appeared on a BBC Radio Scotland program special reviewing The Beatles Biopic Backbeat film. It was on the radio show the Usual Suspects that Miller stated, "We're not The Beatles; we're not Gerry & The Pacemakers, we're The Kaisers." The Kaisers also recorded two numbers for the program, "Soldier Of Love" and "Money (That's What I Want)", at the BBC Scotland studios. - wiki

The A-Bones were the "band" side of KICKS Magazine/Norton Records folks Billy Miller and Miriam Linna, husband and wife, rocking down the highway of record-collecting life, creating tonal mayhem wherever and whenever they strike...
...Miriam did time as the original drummer for the Cramps and both of them cut some pretty wild sides with some identical twin guitarists as the Zantees, but the A-Bones sides are another matter entirely. This ain't no rockabilly cover rehash, The A's can write their own pieces of nonsense, not caring if they sound just like the record or not, unless it's sounding like some totally obscure vulgar piece of wax like "Marlene" by the Sonics.
But that's the whole point of this band; playing the bejesus out of this stuff, with a true American gum-chewing perspicacity, not some reverential / nostalgic tear rolling down its cheek. With Miller's go-for-broke vocals, Bruce Bennett's drenched in reverb guitar manglings, Marcus the Carcass' zoom bass combining with Linna's simple, kick-ass drumming and the new addition of horn-tootin' fool Lars Espensen, this is a noise combo to be reckoned with, the kind of band that Jon Bon Jovi sees in his nightmares. - by Cub Koda

"Desperate Rock'N'Roll" Vol. 11
...It's interesting that customizers like sports-car fans,..
...have always wanted cars minus most of the chrome - but but for different ideals. The sports-car owner thinks chrome trim interferes with the "classic" look of his car. In other words, he wants to simplify the thing. The customizer thinks chrome interferes with something else - the lixurious baroque Streamline. The sports-car people snigger at tailfins. The customizers love them and, looked at from baroque standard of beauty, they are really not so trashy at all. They are an inspiration, if you will, a wonderful fantasy extension of the curved line, and since the car in America is half fantasy anyway, a kind of baroque extension of the ego, you can build up a good argument for them. Getting back to Easter Island, here were Barris and the others with their blowtorches and hard-rubber mallets, creating their baroque sculpture, cut off from the rest of the world and publicized almost solely via the teen-age grapevine. Barris was making a fairly good living, but others were starving at this thing. The pattern was always the same: a guy would open a body shop and teke on enough hack collision work to pay the rent so that he could slam the door shut at 2p.m. and get in there and do his custom jobs, and pretty soon the guy got so he couldn't even face any collision work. Dealing with all those crusty old arteriosclerotic bastards takes up all your time, man, and so they're trying to make a living doing nothing but custom work, and they are starving... Kim Fowley "Mondo Hollywood: The Phantom Jukebox" 1995
For those totally oblivious to the historic work and cult legend of Kim Fowley, two things are instantly apparent. Firstly, the guy is totally off his trolley and secondly, he has managed to record and produce some brilliant songs in a long a distinguishable career. Rev Ola records, the Creation off-shoot re-issue label followed up their previous Fowley release 'Outrageous' with another Fowley retrospective called 'Mondo Hollywood'. Twenty tracks that cover Fowley's solo work from 1966 to 1969.
Of this collection Fowley recalls, "These selections were recorded by me to get girls, confuse people and have fun. These recordings were one off, hobby, experimental events. In the 'silver sixties' anyone could record. And we all did. It was a great time. You should have been there".
And now you can go there with this psychedelic odd ball collection of solo efforts that includes the time honoured drug induced tales of 'The Trip' sample lyric "Summer's here kiddies, it's time to take a trip".
The sheer eccentricity of 'They're coming to take me away, Ha Ha!'. There's the boogie woogie of 'Music is the magic' with it's Dylanesque vocal from 1967 and the funky 'Born to make you cry', the garage punk stomp of 'Underground Lady' from 1966 "before the Count Five's 'Psychotic Reaction" boasts Fowley.
The operatic 'Pop Art 66' has vocals that sound like they were recorded under water. Fowley was hanging around with Mark Writz at the time who went on to produce the epic cult classic "Excerpt from a Teenage Opera" and Pop Art '66 wouldn't be out of place on that album. He arranges the ultra psychedelic dirge that is 'Lights' and the swirling psych pop of 'Something New and Different'.
'The American Dream' is a flower power ballad like Donavan with it's 'Sunday Morning' by Velvet Underground chime and Lou Reed delivery. The album's most accessible and poppy moment.
The bouncy, garage pop of 'Mr Responsibility' aims to be a Yank Ray Davies of the Kinks in their Village Green Preservation Society but according to Kim ends up sounding like an under-produced Roger McGuinn.
The garage psych of The Seeds is the inspiration for 'Reincarnation' from 1966. Fowley would eventually go on to produce the Seeds.
The melodic sounds of the Rolling Stone type stroll that is 'Gypsy Canyon' and 'Me' complete with Revolver guitar riffs and 'Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby' groove.
All the while Fowleys' wayward wailing but passionate voice flies all over the place with wild abandon like he's leading the charge, electing himself spokesman of the flower power generation and getting himself well and truly fried in the process!
It's not easy listening all the way through, after all this is an experimental album produced by a real maverick with a roving, or should that be raving, eye to try something just a little bit different.
Fowley provides brief sound bites in the sleevenotes and lists the impressive cast of thousands he has worked with over the years from The Byrds in their heyday to the BMX Bandits. Gein & the Graverobbers "The Passion of the Anti-Christ" 2005
This band rocks. It'll make you want to drink beers and drive your hearse relly fast...
...Gein and the Graverobbers have established themselves as Boston's premiere instrumental Horror Surf quartet. What is "Horror Surf?" Its Fender guitars saturated in reverb, shredding through high-energy songs brimming with horror and oozing atmosphere. With Gein, Kemper, and DeSalvo decked out in torn black suits, ties and zombie make-up -- and Myra in her mini skirt and go-go boots -- the band looks like a cross between characters from a Tarantino film and something out of "Night of the Living Dead."
The amps adorned in skeletons and jack-o-lanterns lend a haunted houseÊ feel to the stage presence. When these go-go ghouls mix the traditional surf sounds of artists like Dick Dale with the eeriness of the Cramps, they take their audience into a world of B-movie horror. Gein and the Graverobbers are like a musical score to sixties B-rate horror and science fiction movies.
