ROY BROWN "The Complete Imperial Recordings" (1956-1958)

From 1956 to 1958, Roy Brown recorded these 20 tracks for Imperial under the direction of legendary New Orleans R&B producer Dave Bartholomew. Brown and Bartholomew were updating Brown's jump blues/R&B hybrid with a lot of Fats Domino-type Crescent City influence on these sides. Bartholomew co-wrote most of the tunes and used local musicians like saxophonist Lee Allen. There were a couple of commercial successes; his cover of Buddy Knox's "Party Doll" made the R&B Top 20, and "Let the Four Winds Blow" actually made the pop Top 40. For those who want to go a little further past Roy Brown’s earlier jump blues/R&B, this collection is packaged very well, with thorough liner notes and seven previously unissued cuts.

OTIS SPANN "The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions" (1968-1969)

Fantastic sound, beautifully presented, wads of unheard gems - a masterful release - and one I urge you to purchase pronto.Although Otis Spann will always be known as the piano player in the Muddy Waters Band, his solo work should not be overlooked. Possessing a beautifully expressive voice, Spann was also a facile songwriter, and freed of the restrictions inherent in a working electric blues band, his solo sides find him stretching out on piano as well. This two-disc set is a true treasure, containing a badly needed remixed version of 1969's The Biggest Thing Since Colossus LP plus several alternate takes, false starts, and unreleased songs. The Colossus sessions took place in January 1969 (there are a couple tracks here that date from late in 1968), a little over a year before Spann's death in 1970, and found him working with Blue Horizon label owner Mike Vernon and the Peter Green-era version of Fleetwood Mac (who Vernon managed). Spann is in fine voice here, delivering artful blues numbers that are just this side of jazz in execution, and the Fleetwood Mac boys are surprisingly sympathetic to it, making this a delightful release and one that no real fan of Spann should be without. The Denvermen "Let’s Go Surfside" ’63 / The Avengers VI "Real Cool Hits" ’64

The Denvermen was a 60's instrumental surf band from Australia. They were heavily influenced by the Shadows but with more twangy guitar sounds of Duane Eddy. They had few hit singles [Surfside was a #1 single in Australia in 1962.], but never hit the really big time worldwide. This collection gathers their sole '63 LP.No mere footnote in surf music history, the Avengers VI were an exceptional group of clean-cut rockers in matching suits from Anaheim, CA, whose somewhat forgotten classic, "Time Bomb" was covered in recent years by both Man or Astro-man? and the Bomboras. This reissue of their first recording, which came out in 1966, was originally intended to be promotion for the Good Humor Ice Cream Company. The cover features them on top of and around an ice cream truck sporting matching aqua-colored suits. Nearby, an ice cream man displays a Popsicle. But the album is also a very impressive and enjoyable collection of originals and covers including a knockout take on "Downtown," as well as Henry Mancini's "Mr. Lucky" and more obvious choices like "Pipeline" and "Peter Gunn." It's the originals, though, that make the case for the band being a forgotten gem amongst the legions of '60s surf groups. Featuring scintillating organ riffs and three guitars going berserk, songs like "None But the Brave" and "The Avengers Stomp" prove the Avengers VI to be a crucial, though mostly forgotten chapter of the surf music era. THE NEW BREED "Wants You!" 1965-1968

Finally, Sacramento's legendary New Breed get the full anthology they have deserved for so long. The Breed is best known as the alma mater of future Poco/Eagles bass player Timothy B. Schmit, but this punchy quartet was actually a fine group in their own right, with several collectable singles to their name, including the popular garage band items Green Eye'd Woman and Want Ad Reader. The New Breed Wants You! contains 24 tracks from 1965-68, including all their 45 sides, unreleased material from aborted single and album projects, and several cuts by the combo's latterday incarnation, Glad. As an added bonus, there are three video segments including footage of the band miming on an L.A. pop show in 1967! The package's deluxe 28-page booklet is crammed with mostly unseen pictures, many in color, plus a definitive New Breed history by NorCal '60s expert, Alec Palao. Any fan of quality mid-'60s teenaged rock 'n' roll will want to snap up The New Breed Wants You.trax:

"ESSENTIAL MISSISSIPPI BLUES"

Comprehensive overview of the first couple generations of Mississippi blues artists… Great Selection & sound with wonderful presentation...The Mississippi Delta has some of the most fertile soil in the world and became one of the richest cotton growing areas in the world which, before the American Civil War, was worked exclusively by black slaves brought over from Africa. The blues was forged on the anvil of poverty and hardship the black sharecroppers and tenant farmers had to endure. Born of the harsh, brutal conditions of life in the South, and full of pain, frustration and anger, the passionate, soulful sounds of the Delta revolutionised the sound of 20th-century music. This compilation celebrates some of its greatest exponents.

JIMMY JONES "Good Times With The Handy Man" 1955-1960

Best known for his 1960 R&B hit “Handy Man,” Jimmy Jones started his singing career in 1954 when he joined the doo wop group the Berliners, who became the Spirits of Rhythm, and then became the Sparks of Rhythm when they signed with Apollo Records, releasing a pair of singles under that name with Jones, then only 14 years old, as lead singer. He left to form another doo wop group, signing them to Savoy Records (who promptly named the new group the Savoys) and released another couple of singles. The group left Savoy, and now calling themselves the Pretenders, signed with George Goldner's Rama Records, again releasing a couple of singles before moving on to record one single for Whirlin’ Disc Records, and then, now calling themselves the Jones Boys, they tracked sides for the Holiday, Apt, and Arrow imprints before Jones gave up on the group idea and went solo in 1959, signing with the MGM-owned Cub Records. Working with producer Otis Blackwell, Jones hit it big right out of the box with his self-penned “Handy Man” that year, and the single was an international hit (as well as spawning later cover versions by Del Shannon and James Taylor that were also big hits). This two-disc set combines the key Jones sides from all of these groups and labels (no doubt a licensing miracle) between 1955 and 1960, and makes for an in-depth and chronological portrait of this sweet-voiced and compelling singer at his best and in his prime. THE KENTUCKY COLONELS "Appalachian Swing!" 1964

Appalachian Swing! is one of the most influential albums in the whole of bluegrass music, primarily because of the stunning playing of Clarence White. With his vibrant, innovative flat-picking, White helped pioneer a new style in bluegrass; namely, he redefined the acoustic guitar as a solo instrument instead of confining it to just background status. The sound was revolutionary upon its release in 1964 and the music still sounds alive, even timeless, because of the strength of White's vision and talent. He was one of the greatest musicians in bluegrass history and the fact that Appalachian Swing! still sounds fresh makes his tragic death all the more painful. (Tom Owens, Allmusic)

"Trouble So Hard" 40 Prison Songs From The Chain Gang

Songs, spirituals and hollers heard from behind bars. A selection of affecting, hard hitting blues and uplifting spirituals that would often accompany the slave labour of the chain gangs and beyond. From genuine prisoners to true legends and somewhere in between, enjoy a real slice of musical history. (Blues World)This is a collection of mostly spirituals and some work songs from both inmate groups and a number of well known performers.
This style of prison work songs and/or chain gang songs is a small yet important piece of the overall blues genre. This style of music gets little fanfare yet it's a real look back at a time when incarcerated men (and women) sang songs to make the time and work go by faster, to help them believe that there was a better life ahead, and that there was someone interested in recording these songs inside prison walls. And while a number of these songs aren't by prisoners, they all have some kind of spiritual redemption at their core.
Anyone who has a deep interest in early styles of blues needs to have a collection like this in their music library. This music (especially the prison songs) is an authentic look at a time now long since passed. Hearing some of the best of these songs will get you closer to that time and place which most of us will never know. Some of these performers are obviously smoother than others. And it's those songs by the singers who aren't artists that will still stay in your mind afterwards. Listen to Vera Hall's title track, "Old Alabama" by the Mississippi and Louisiana State Prisoners, "Let Your Hammer Ring" by Ramsey & Retrieve State Prisoners, "Rosie" by C.B. & Axe Gang, or the songs by '22' & Group and you'll hear what I mean. But saying that, several of these tunes by more well known artists pack some power too. There's some good sides by Rev. Gary Davis, the Golden Gate Quartet, The Charioteers, Mahalia Jackson, and others.
If you like what you hear there are a number of other collections worth investigating like--"Angola Prison Spirituals", "Angola Prisoner's Blues", and both volumes of "Prison Songs". And for some great spiritual music check out "Rev. Louis Overstreet--St. Luke's Powerhouse Church of God in Christ", and "Elder Charles Beck, c. 1946-1956". There's some good music here for those so inclined. (Stuart Jefferson, The Blues Messenger)

THE MUDDY WATERS BLUES BAND "Mud In Your Ear" 1969 (2012 Remaster)

These recordings were never released on CD until now that the producer Alan Douglas has chosen to save them from oblivion, as well as the painting by Mati Klarwein, reproduced on the cover which has never been published before either. With Otis Spann on piano, Luther Johnson on guitar, Mojo Buford on harmonica, the producer knew what he was dealing with: serious clients who know what they were all about in terms of blues.
They had the repertoire down to an art, which they practiced on the road and delivered a husky and rustic version, with the whole crew to cook up their blues. Owing to his contractual obligations, Muddy Waters couldn’t sing, but he did not deprive himself of supplying the backing guitars, and laying down a few solos. “Mud in your ear!”This is Muddy's band without the boss (mostly) running through a great set. This was most recently available on a deleted Muse CD and it's great to have it back; here's why.
This version of the Muddy band had less "stars" than would be typical. In terms of solo careers, from this group you really only have Spann as a "star". Please do not let that dissuade you, as the music is rough and tumble, funky (not in the funk sense), tight as can be and still retaining a relaxed loose feel. This is solid, hard blues played by guys who played together a lot.
By that time, Muddy was having his band perform lengthy warm-up sets at his shows, and if this is what they were like, audiences really got their money's worth. This Luther Johnson died young; it is not the guy from Atlanta or the Guitar Jr. who has had several really strong recordings. The Luther here is a fine vocalist, with a rough voice that conveys the emotional impact we blues fans crave, without going into histrionics - he just sounds natural. It is a shame that we do not have more of him on disc (there are a couple, but without the time and money put into this one).
Other guitar duties are handled by Sammy Lawhorn, one of the great unsung bluesmen. His playing is always dead-on and more "accomplished" than Luther's. Spann, on piano, is as great as ever - check out the run he plays just before the final hit on "Remember Me". Mojo Buford is on harp, and acquits himself well throughout, including the instrumentals (Jimmy Smith's "Chicken Shack" is mistitled here, by the way). The bass and drums are solid throughout, adding accents and runs in all the right places while laying down the Muddy Waters Blues Band's signature thick grooves. Muddy himself adds slide to one slow blues, but does no vocals.
Just great - maybe I have grown, but I did not remember liking this as much circa 1980 when I first purchased the LP's (the cd format covers two lp's). A very, very pleasant surprise for me.
It's nice to have the original cover from the Douglas issue. The photo of the full band with their Guild guitars is a nice bonus. Something I enjoy is the French translation from French to English in the liner notes. Longtime blues fans wonder why they don't run them by someone who speaks English, but it's entertaining.
Overall, a really fine package and a worthwhile purchase for fans of Muddy, any of the participants, ensemble blues Chicago-style, and strong, tough blues. (Blues World)

THE HENRY GLOVER STORY, Vol. 2 (1951-1961)

A pioneering behind-the-scenes figure, Henry Glover was one of the first truly successful black executives in the music business, rising to prominence in the late '40s with Syd Nathan's independent (and white-owned) King label. No mere pencil-pusher, Glover was a talented jack of all trades who served at various times as a producer, arranger, songwriter (sometimes under the alias Henry Bernard), engineer, trumpet player, talent scout, A&R rep, studio builder, and -- later on -- label owner in his own right. Eclectic in his musical tastes as well, Glover worked with country, blues, R&B, pop, rock, and jazz artists over the course of his long career, and played a major role in building King into one of the biggest -- and best -- independents of its era. JOHNNY WINTER "Winter Essentials 1960-1967"

... yes, that is Johnny Winter singing on all the tracks (except the instrumentals). On most, it is a very young Johnny Winter, but it is Johnny Winter. While I agree that most of the songs don't sound like Johnny Winter blues guitar master, that is kind of the whole point of this release. It's also what makes this CD so much fun. This a glimpse of a young budding musician trying different things hoping to find his niche and break out. Early on, that meant imitating whatever was getting airplay at the time. There are a number of doo wop sounding songs, a few surf sounding instrumentals and even a few stabs at garage psychedelia.
More importantly, there are little glimpses of the Johnny Winter style that was to come. Hey Hey Hey is my personal favorite from this collection and reminds a lot of Boom Boom by John Lee Hooker. Roadrunner is also a real gem. Birds Don't Row Boats is one of the garage psychedelic songs I mentioned and also a lot of fun. I have all these, plus Creepy, Ice Cube, Tramp and a few others on my Ipod in my favorites list. And, yes, there are some blues songs in the collection that would fit right in on most of the albums he would release later in his career. (Ugly Things)trax disc 1:

Waves "Waves" 1975

Hi, I discovered this album on the internet, as a vinyl rip but of poor quality. I tried to improve the sound, and I did a bit, but it's hard to do good with bad... So I had to find this record, and I ordered it in New Zealand, a brand new edition remastered, and here it is for your pleasure I hope, and in two versions (mp3 or flac). Enjoy that vinyl rip!!! - Magic Kaic's MusicOf the many New Zealand albums long overdue for a reissue, the sole album by the acoustic quartet Waves is among the most worthy. The band of Michael Matthew, Kevin Wildman, Graeme Gash and David Marshall were straight out of the post-Crosby Stills and Nash school of close harmony singing, acoustic guitars and some pointed electric playing when the moment demanded it.Their debut album -- produced by Peter Dawkins and engineered by Phil Yule -- was recorded in four days at Stebbing Studios in Auckland with a little help from the likes of Mike Chunn on bass (of Split Enz/Citizen Band fame), keyboard player Mike Harvey, Murray Grindlay of the Underdogs etc, here on harmonica), Mike Caen (of Streetalk) and others. It appeared on the short-lived but worthy Direction Records out of Auckland. Given the period -- Hello Sailor, Dragon etc -- the quiet and considered music of Waves seemed at odds with the prevailing wind, but perhaps that is why they are so fondly remembered by those who quite liked to sit and nod at home rather than tough it out in boozy bars.Their musicianship was impeccable and songs like Gash's Wornout Rocker and Dolphin Song, and Wildman's Arrow, etched themselves into the memory of many. "THE BLUES" Music From The Film By Samuel Charters 1967

While recording in the South in the early 1960s, producer, writer, and music historian Samuel Charters was inspired not only by the sound of Furry Lewis’s guitar, but by the patterns of movement in his hands and fingers as he played. Thus Charters decided to make a film that would document aspects of the blues that couldn’t be put on a phonograph record. In the sweltering summer of 1962, Charters journeyed through St. Louis, Memphis, Louisiana, and South Carolina to shoot the film The Blues and record this soundtrack. Artists featured in addition to Lewis are J.D. Short, Baby Tate, and Sleepy John Estes. Liner notes include details of the making of the film and biographies of the artists. - INFO:

"He's So Fine" The Laurie Records Story 1961-1962

Laurie Records was a New York-based independent record company that, over three decades from 1958, regularly cracked the upper echelons of the American charts. Their first signing was to become one of the biggest pop stars of the era, Dion, who released hits such as 'Runaround Sue' and 'The Wanderer'. THE DELLS "Time Makes You Change" 1954-1961

The Dells are one of the finest R&B vocal groups and the only one to survive with pretty much the same line up to this day and were a viable act until the '90s! Features every A & B side of all their singles through to 1961 including, 'Dreams of Contentment' and the Doo Wop classic, 'Oh What a Night'. Also included on this superb set is the CD debut of their 1961 recordings with the legendary Dinah Washington. The Dells were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and one listen to this collection will confirm why!
INFO: http://www.jasmine-records.co.uk/acatalog/jascd-186.htmlThe early years of the long serving and much loved R&B vocal are presented for your listening pleasure: tracks they cut for Chess/Checker as The El-Rays (including the flop Darling I Know), tracks representing their years on Vee Jay, and the four Jazz-flavored singles they recorded with Dinah Washington for Argo (another Chess subsidiary). The hit from this era was the immortal Oh What a Night from 1956, but Dreams of Contentment/ She's Just an Angel, and I Wanna Go Home are just as good, which may or may not be surprising considering that the group members wrote much of their own material-truly a rarity for R&B artists of any stripe in those days. Although the collection is generously sprinkled with no less than twelve previously unreleased tracks, it's the Dinah Washington/Dells cuts that snagged my interest. Considering that the two titans cut an entire album (although uncredited, the Dells appear on Dinah's 1961 "Tears & Laughter" LP) together, it seem like a cheat that we only get four songs but what we do get is indisputably great, particularly Am I Blue/ Mood Indigo, and the Dells solo turn on Jeepers Creepers. Ok, guys, how about on the next Dells collection we get the entire Washington/Dells LP, huh? Anyway, this is primo doo wop from a classic group that's still going strong today.
