I'm puzzled by a 1963 b-side by Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers.

The label of the Cliff Bennett single indicates that the song is My Old Stand-By, written by Jack Rhodes. But neither the music nor the lyrics of the Cliff Bennett song match those of the Jack Rhodes song, recorded by Curley Jim Morrison in 1964. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5o_kogt4n6s

So where did Cliff Bennett (born in Berkshire, England, and recording for Parlophone Records in London) learn a song written by two men who were born in Arizona and moved to Bakersfield, California. The Curless & Adams version hadn't been released yet. Was there an earlier recording of the song?
The Owen/Simpson song recorded by Bennett and by Curless & Adams should not be confused with Your Old Standby by Jim Eanes & Wade Perry (recorded by Jim Eanes and by George Jones) or Your Old Stand By by Smokey Robinson & Janie Bradford (recorded by Mary Wells). The first line of the Owen/Simpson song is: "I never know how long I'll get to hold you." And the chorus begins: "I'm just your old stand-by/That's all I am to you."
For that matter, how had someone at Parlophone Records heard of the song by Jack Rhodes of Texas, such that they could miscredit the Bennett single thereas? The Curley Jim Morrison version hadn't been released yet. Was there an earlier recording of the song?

“Old Standby” was copyrighted by Fuzzy Owen and Red Simpson on 29 November 1961 [EU697151]. The first release I can find is a Gary Dean B-side “Old Standby” on Liberty 55455 [BB 19/05/62].
Two choices:
(1) the Gary Dean 45 is what Cliff Bennett heard and covered but it was mistitled as “My Old Stand-by” and when Parlophone searched (in books rather than online; they looked under M rather than O) the Jack Rhodes composition [30/09/55 EP93344] was the only title they found. Clerical error.
(2) At this time EMI were releasing Liberty’s catalogue in the UK so it’s quite possible that the US disc had been sent to EMI and rejected but a copy was still on the premises for Cliff to hear. Problem with this is that Liberty disc did have the correct copyright credits on it.
