The Royal Hangmen "Hanged, Drawn & Quartered" 2016

The Royal Hangmen's second album has come a long way, starting high up in the seclusion of the mountains and ending in Hamburg's industrial district of Hammerbrook. Little by little, songs were polished, but also left with the necessary rough edges, in order to finally be immortalized on tape in the Yeah Yeah Yeah Studios. Dennis Rux's production brings the Hangmen's freshly forged sounds together perfectly...
...Sonically based on recordings from the 60s, the band's own style remains unmistakable, but on the second album it is much more contrasting and diverse: snotty garage rockers meet dark psychedelia, anger meets melancholy, although the noticeable joy of playing and listening is by no means the same stay on the track. The record opens with the fuzz-soaked “Ridin' High,” and it continues with variety. Be it with the dark bluesy “Howlin' For You”, the soulful “Stay” or a Booker T.-like instrumental with the apt name “Grooveadelic”. Two songs by Gary Hart, an English songwriter and fan of the band, also found their way onto the album - "I Thinks it's a Storm" and "Ain't Walking a Line". You can hear dark sounds in songs like “Feed The Monkey” and “Step Out Of The Dark”. So there is something on Hanged, Drawn and Quartered for all fans of neat (or unkempt) 60s music. Sixties Garage Rock 'n' Roll combined with the unmistakable Hangmen style form a stable constant, so that playing through without skipping is not only possible without any problems, it is even recommended.
