VANISHING POINT
No better example of the unique perspective that 1970’s American Cinema gives us exists than Richard C. Sarafian’s Vanishing Point, which romantically captures the last vestiges of freedom available to Americans (and, one could say, specifically the American Male) before technology and capitalism eroded that lifestyle for (seemingly) ever. It is also, like any great film of that era, unabashedly political in a non-didactic way. It’s slow-paced, of course, and shows off the wide expanse of this country with that wonderfully grainy film stock of the time. It is also, at heart, a pro-humanity film rallying hard against the authoritarian system of the State- which back them seemed to simply nip on the horizon, but today is oh-so-very-real.
It’s probably no coincidence that the main creative forces behind the film came from other cultures- Sarafian was born to Armenian immigrant parents, and screenwriter Guillermo Cabrera was a Cuban-Marxist essayist. Their take on the American road movie is very much an outsider’s fantasy of America: Kowalski delivers cars for a living. He’s got to drive one from Denver to San Francisco, so he buys a bunch of uppers to keep him awake and places a bet with his dealer that he can make it to San Fran in 36 hours. The race is on.
This journey involves everything and everyone: cops, radio DJ’s, naked girls, snakes, Pentecostal Christians, racists, weed, hippies… they’re all in there, but the way they’re woven into the narrative is what makes Vanishing Point the existential gem that it is. With the help of a blind, Black radio DJ, Kowalski becomes a folk hero overnight, and his race- far from being a macho display of pointless testosterone- becomes a spiritual journey that transcends the drugs, religion, and sex so prevalent in the film. Save for one very cringy homophobic scene that shows us just how far we’ve evolved in certain social areas, Vanishing Point is timeless. Kowalski is no superhero, but he represents the unbeatable human spirit that lives within us all.
Not that anyone noticed. Vanishing Point vanished quickly off the screen when it first came out, basically sold as a drive-in B-Movie most people missed. But in a wonderful twist of historical fate, it sprouted wings in far-off places like the U.S.S.R. Obsessed with winning the Cultural Cold War, Soviet Censors allowed Vanishing Point into the country (most American films were rejected) only because they viewed it as a self-evident example of American decadence, the perfect propaganda to further their agenda. To their chagrin, Russian audiences understood the revolutionary subtext quite well, giving the film life behind the Iron Curtain. Today, Vanishing Point remains a little-seen cult classic, but a classic it definitely is.
