…and now for something completely different! 3143 - 2026

These damned religious fanatics, politicians, warlords, and so on... Instead of sending the children of their peoples to THEIR OWN WARS, these idiots should settle their differences in large arenas with boxing matches or football games! For example, the "peace-making" Evangelical Messiah Agent Orange against the belligerent Putin, or the Pope in his ridiculous disguise against the bearded Ayatollahs with beards down to their navels... - RYP

Has anyone had trouble accessing the blog via Firefox? The other night I went to check it out and got an error with error code bX-c6v7da. I honestly thought the blog had been shut down, until the same thing happened with another Blogger site and I decided to try it in a different browser. Glad you're still here! Not a huge deal, but if anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it.

Would anybody happen to have this soundtrack by Duke Ellington for the film Assault on A Queen?

"The band first came to prominence in 1969 when rock impresario Bill Graham signed them after an audition, and they played the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Pense has been compared to Janis Joplin, and it was Joplin who recommended the audition to Graham.

The term "East Bay Grease" has been used to describe the San Francisco Bay Area's brass horn heavy funk-rock sound of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s; Cold Blood was one of the pioneer bands of this sound. Others were Tower of Power (who made an album called East Bay Grease). The Tower of Power horn players have performed with Cold Blood on a regular basis since the early 1970s. Skip Mesquite and Mic Gillette have been members of both Tower of Power and Cold Blood."

Hi folks,

Any Audacity users out there? I've been binging on Billy Strings live shows on Youtube while organizing an out of control amount of files on an external drive. Anyway, I can download from YouTube using MediaHuman but it only gives me 192kps. I keep trying to get 320 with Audacity but no matter how I fiddle with it, it sounds crappy. Now I know why. The other day during a playback, there was my dog barking. It's recording output from the computer's speakers via the microphone? The program's setting only give me 2 options, speakers or headphones. If I choose headphones nothing comes out at all.
Any ideas? I'd like to get these shows in better quality (I remember the blowback I got a while back for posting a different show in 192.)
Thanks!

RYP said...

If your source quality is 192 kbps, how is it supposed to get better using something like Audacity? You can't get something out of nothing.

Anonymous said...

Berni, youtube has its own bitrates. No way you can upgrade that, it will be the same under a different name. When you have shows that sound well, and you want to present them, do so. If someone doesn't like your rip, let them rip their own from utube.

Anonymous said...

You can't upscale 192 to 320 they are still 192 tracks audacity can't improve the quality. And if the MediaHuman then they are not 192 but in reality only 128, so you're trying to upgrade 128 to 330. This is why there are so many fake er tracks kicking around on the net .that and a few other downloaders.
You can't make a silk purse from a pigs ear!!!

Was missing the Orchestre Le Bida de la Capitale, thanks a mil!

hedspace said...

Also, sometimes the file size will increase dramatically after exporting to 320 from a substantially lower bitrate, but as said above, GIGO. (Garbage In, Garbage Out).

Berni said...

Ah, I didn't realize that Youtube was only 192. I know that you can't go from a lower bitrate to a higher - that would be alchemy. Thanks for the feedback.

I expect I'll have my naivety pointed out to me, but I opened Media Human's Settings and then Preferences and Audio Output and changed the download rate to 320.

Makes me feel good if nothing else!!

I've really been craving this record a lot lately. I got it originally as one of my 14 choices from joining the Columbia Record Club. It's always been my fave of his stuff. Dillard & Clark is up there too. In my interviews with Barry McGuire, on my blog, Barry had amusing anecdotes of smoking with Gene while touring with The New Christie Minstrels ... among other great tales. Thanks, Seanav. This is right on time.

Note
1st time release of Ellington's lost score to the "Assault On A Queen" Soundtrack issued 2016 in a limited press of 1000.
The original score masters were lost. The audio was taken from the film's monural music stem. Light stereo ambiance was added.
Duke Ellington recorded nine tracks, of which five appeared in the final film.
The remaining tracks feature orchestrations by others recorded on February 4 & 9, 1966, with the guitar solo on February 2 and the trumpet solo on March 11, 1966

Berni said...

Bill - I've done that too but even when settings are changed to 320, the files output at 192. That YouTube itself is 192 itself would explain that.

eino nada said...

@Berni

everyone is right about not being able to upgrade 192kbs to anything better with audacity (or any other app for that matter). you can export it as whatever format or bitrate you like but it will not enhance the quality of the file in the slightest, it will take up more space. back in the day we called these mutt rips. ppl on p2p sharing sites would bloat their uploads this way to gain more credit they could in turn, download more with.

however, regarding your recording query ... have you tried switching the driver from NME to WASPI, then selecting speaker/headphones option? pretty sure that should do it for you.
