West African Music continues with albums involving fathers and sons.
First the 5th volume of Musicaphon Bärenreiter's 1971 release 'Première Anthologie De La Musique Malienne', capturing a unique window into Malian music heritage, 'Cordes Anciennes' featuring Sidiki Diabaté and Djelimadi Sissoko.
The second 'New Ancient Strings', beautifully recorded by Lucy Durán, features their sons Toumani Diabaté and Ballaké Sissoko. Their intention was to honour their fathers' musical legacy while showcasing the significant developments that had occurred in Malian music during the three decades since the recording of 'Cordes Anciennes'.
The third album Sidiki Diabaté And Ensemble's 'Ba Togoma' was recorded in London while they were representing Mali in the BBC's landmark 1987 concert series 'Music of the Royal Courts'. This phenomenal ensemble features the kora's of father and son Sidiki and Toumani Diabaté, the bala of Toumani's uncle Bouraima Kouyaté. The vocals are provided by Sidiki's wife Mariama Kouyaté, legendary singer/composer Djelimadi Sissoko and the young diva Kandia Kouyaté.
