Hugh Masekela was a jazz trumpeteer, fluegelhornist, cornetist, singer and composer from South Africa. But he also played standards in all music genres. He played on many albums by famous rock groups.
He played the trumpet solo on The Byrds’ “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘n’ Roll Star”. While in the USA in 1967 to record a live LP, he appeared with The Byrds at the KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival on June 10, 1967, as well as at the Monterey Festival on June 17, 1967. Byrds bass player Chris Hillman said he was inspired to start writing songs after participating in a Letta Mbulu recording session with Hugh Masekela (David Crosby was there too).
