The Mekons "The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen" 1979

The Mekons are a British band formed in the late 1970s as an art collective. They are one of the longest-running and most prolific of the first-wave British punk rock bands. The band's style has evolved over time to incorporate aspects of country music, folk music, alternative rock and occasional experiments with dub. They are known for their raucous live shows...
...The band was formed in 1976 by a group of University of Leeds art students: Jon Langford, Kevin Lycett, Mark White, Andy Corrigan and Tom Greenhalgh—the Gang of Four and Delta 5 formed from the same group of students. They took the band's name from the Mekon, an evil, super-intelligent Venusian featured in the British 1950s–1960s comic Dan Dare (printed in the Eagle). The Mekons were described as more chaotic version of the Gang of Four; Lycett stated the band operated on the principle that "anybody could do it ... anybody could get up and join in and instruments could be swapped around; that there'd be no distance between the audience and the band."
By their second show, supporting the Rezillos at the F Club, they were approached with a record deal by Bob Last of Fast Product. The Mekons were first band signed to the label. The band's first single was "Never Been in a Riot", a satirical take on the Clash's White Riot. The release was made Single of the Week in NME. Their second single, "Where Were You?" was released by the end of 1978 and sold out of its 27,500 copies. At this time, Last convinced the band to sign to a larger label—Virgin. The Mekons popularity peaked as they played on the same bill as other "new music" groups like Gang of Four, the Fall, the Human League, and Stiff Little Fingers.
For several years the band played noisy, bare-bones post-punk, releasing singles on a number of labels. The Mekons' first album, The Quality of Mercy Is Not Strnen, was recorded using the Gang of Four's instruments, and due to an error by the Virgin Records art department, featured pictures of the Gang of Four on the back cover. After 1982's The Mekons Story, a compilation of old recordings, the band ceased activity for a while, with Langford forming The Three Johns. Corrigan became a tour manager for many years before founding a company that provides visa and immigration services specialising in the entertainment industry. - wiki

A five-CD limited-edition box that combines all five volumes of Psychic Circle's Instro-Hipsters a Go-Go series, complete with a new 80-plus page booklet that ties everything together and adds biographies of the artists as well as discographies, this set is nothing less than the instrumental soundtrack of Swingin' London in the late 1960s and early '70s…
...The variety on display here is impressive, ranging from B-3-driven soul-jazz jams to twangy surf guitars, honking sax R&B stompers, and sweeping, orchestrated lounge oddities. Truthfully, it sounds like the Mod soundtrack to an epic James Bond movie tossed into a time warp blender, and while there is almost every kind of instrumental style represented here, it has a surprisingly unified feel and tone when all is said and done (the whole affair was compiled and sequenced by Nick Saloman, otherwise known as the Bevis Frond). Among the highlights are Timebox's delightfully loose "I Wish I Could Jerk Like My Uncle Cyril," the insistent "Saturday Jump" by Midnight Shift, the Mike Cotton Sounds' "Like That," the Roulettes' "Junk," and the nascent funk of "Ridin' on the Gravy Train" by the Thunder Company, but again, even though this box certainly feels varied, there's an overriding scheme to it that makes it all fit together like a giant, glowing neon hymn to the wonderful excesses and eccentricities of hip '60s London. The Woggles "The Big Beat" 2013 + "The Big Beat Bonus EP" - 12"/45rpm EP

The Woggles are a band that seems to have stepped straight out of a Nuggets anthology, and they've been that way since 1987, spinning out singles, EPs, and full-length albums that carry on as if the world of rock & roll & pop stopped dead in the mid-'60s when it arrived at garage rock...
...Not that this is a bad thing, particularly if one is a fan of such fare, but it does seem obvious that bands like the Woggles aren't creating garage rock as much as they are re-creating it in its own image, an increasingly tighter circle that, in the end, is inherently conservative, full of rules, stances, and approaches that, if they vary from the center, break the whole facsimile down. It's the 21st century, and while the garage era in rock is still arguably one of the genre's most refreshing and wonderfully snotty eras, it existed in its original form 50 years ago, an eternity when it comes to pop music. That said, these guys have the form down, and song after song on The Big Beat has the sharp, reckless, propulsive, and pissed-off attitude that made garage rock so much fun in the first place. Songs here like "Don't Think I Can Wait That Long," "Baby I'll Trust You When You're Dead," and "What Kind of a Girl" all steamroll by like a second (or third, or fourth, or fifth) coming of the early Who or the early Kinks before either of those bands started to make rock operas and such, and one has to ask, is that a bad thing? It isn't. It's a style frozen well out of its time, though, no different than a contemporary acoustic string band affecting the accents, rough edges, and material of an old-time mountain string band while using digital tuners and sophisticated sound systems, and making sharp videos to disperse on the Internet...

"Beat, Bluf & Branie" Nederbeat 1963-1969 - disc 5

This is an awesome collection of some of the most skull-crushingly reverbed-out, fuzzadelic, full-throttle '60s garage rock/psych from the Netherlands. Other reviews compare this to the Nuggets "foreign" beat box set: there is no comparison. This collection chases the Rhino box around the street with its tail tucked between its legs. It also blows most other Nederbeat compilations away, due to its breadth, excellent sound quality and extensive, authoritative selection. No one in Europe really "got" this kind of rock as well as the Dutch did. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Bomp)
Hello! If you enjoyed Rhino's Nuggets Box 2, then this Dutch set will be a revelation. From Hunter Music/Universal comes an amazing 5 disc set. Hear what the British Invasion sounded like through Dutch muscians and song writers. I've listened to it non-stop since purchasing it. You have to hear Armand, he/they sound like Dylan singing in a foreign language. 98% of the songs in the set are in English. It pops up on here used quite a bit, so spend the bucks, its like discovering a whole new world of rock music you never knew existed. My favorite group on this set is Q'65, a group who were really 5 years a head of their time. I can't recommend this enough!!! Come on Universal USA release this here!!. (Ugly Things)

"Instro-Hipsters a Go-Go!" 2003 - Vol 4

A five-CD limited-edition box that combines all five volumes of Psychic Circle's Instro-Hipsters a Go-Go series, complete with a new 80-plus page booklet that ties everything together and adds biographies of the artists as well as discographies, this set is nothing less than the instrumental soundtrack of Swingin' London in the late 1960s and early '70s…
...The variety on display here is impressive, ranging from B-3-driven soul-jazz jams to twangy surf guitars, honking sax R&B stompers, and sweeping, orchestrated lounge oddities. Truthfully, it sounds like the Mod soundtrack to an epic James Bond movie tossed into a time warp blender, and while there is almost every kind of instrumental style represented here, it has a surprisingly unified feel and tone when all is said and done (the whole affair was compiled and sequenced by Nick Saloman, otherwise known as the Bevis Frond). Among the highlights are Timebox's delightfully loose "I Wish I Could Jerk Like My Uncle Cyril," the insistent "Saturday Jump" by Midnight Shift, the Mike Cotton Sounds' "Like That," the Roulettes' "Junk," and the nascent funk of "Ridin' on the Gravy Train" by the Thunder Company, but again, even though this box certainly feels varied, there's an overriding scheme to it that makes it all fit together like a giant, glowing neon hymn to the wonderful excesses and eccentricities of hip '60s London. Throwing a summer beach blanket bikini party? Well here's the soundtrack! The Woggles! Naked and Instrumental! --Little Steven Van Zandt
Southern gentlemen the Woggles have been one of the most dependably devastating live acts on the garage rock scene since they started out in 1987, and Tempo Tantrum is something of a companion piece to Soul Sizzling 7" Meltdown, their 2007 collection of non-LP single sides from throughout the group's history. However, though this also brings together some fine but hard to find material in one handy package, Tempo Tantrum primarily focuses on the Woggles' instrumental prowess, featuring a dozen (mostly) vocal-free numbers from singles, compilation albums, and the group's archives, all recorded between 1995 and 2006. It wouldn't be the Woggles without some contributions from lead singer the Professor Mighty Manfred, so a few token vocal tunes have been added to the mix, though one, in jolly irony, is a Dick Dale cover (a man who did his best work without a singer), and while there are vocals on "Tempo Tantrum" and "The Elbow Twist," they certainly take a back seat to the rockin' and twangin' guitar work of Flesh Hammer, Montague, and Zorko. Tempo Tantrum is a bit too focused on one area to be a worthwhile career summary, though it does make a case for the group's consistent heroism in the service of rock, from the dripping wet surf assault "Flash Flood" and the neat monster rock opus "The Elbow Twist" to a supercharged cover of the Monkees' "Valerie" and a tip of the hat to their spiritual brethren the Fleshtones, "Theme from the Vindicators." But if you're looking for 30 minutes of good and sweaty rock action, without the human voice making a nuisance of itself, Tempo Tantrum is just what you've been waiting for, and it's enough to convince anyone that nobody throws a rock & roll party like the Woggles. - Review by Mark Deming

The Woggles "Rock and Roll Backlash" 2007

The Woggles aren't trying to reinvent the garage rock wheel, but after slogging it out in every dive club imaginable since 1987, they realize that bringing new spins to the formula neither dilutes it nor opens them up to the dreaded sellout finger-pointing. Recorded at Rick Miller's (Southern Culture on the Skids) Kudzu Ranch in North Carolina, produced by Jeff Walls (ex-of Guadalcanal Diary), and mastered by the near legendary Rodney Mills, the quartet has a formidable backline for its first album in four years. The guys rise to the occasion with some of their finest material. The Woggles have experienced a surge in popularity through exposure on Little Steven's weekly radio show. Since this album is released on his Wicked Cool label, that is likely to continue. Little has changed in the group's approach, though a bit more British Invasion mixed with American garage invigorates the sound of these 12 originals. There is even a spaghetti Western throwback with reverbed guitar and mariachi trumpet ("El Toro"). Occasional horns on a few other tracks also prove that different ingredients added to their established jittery rock & roll stew can bring much needed spice to the concoction. Lead singer the Professor Mighty Manfred is in fine trashy shape, as is the foursome's recent guitarist, known only as Flesh Hammer. Songs such as "Time of My Own" and the title track boast singalong hooks and lyrics that veer toward the members' obvious love of an earlier time and their dedication to saving the purity of rock & roll. You won't need any convincing that they are up to the task after one spin of this raw, rollicking slab of retro-rocking. It's a trip back to the '60s when the Standells, the Seeds, and all the other bands on the Nuggets collection were making music that might have seemed disposable at the time but is now considered classic. Add The Woggles to that pack, because they are every bit as committed, brash, and raw -- and Rock and Roll Backlash is all the evidence you need. - Review by Hal Horowitz

A five-CD limited-edition box that combines all five volumes of Psychic Circle's Instro-Hipsters a Go-Go series, complete with a new 80-plus page booklet that ties everything together and adds biographies of the artists as well as discographies, this set is nothing less than the instrumental soundtrack of Swingin' London in the late 1960s and early '70s…
...The variety on display here is impressive, ranging from B-3-driven soul-jazz jams to twangy surf guitars, honking sax R&B stompers, and sweeping, orchestrated lounge oddities. Truthfully, it sounds like the Mod soundtrack to an epic James Bond movie tossed into a time warp blender, and while there is almost every kind of instrumental style represented here, it has a surprisingly unified feel and tone when all is said and done (the whole affair was compiled and sequenced by Nick Saloman, otherwise known as the Bevis Frond). Among the highlights are Timebox's delightfully loose "I Wish I Could Jerk Like My Uncle Cyril," the insistent "Saturday Jump" by Midnight Shift, the Mike Cotton Sounds' "Like That," the Roulettes' "Junk," and the nascent funk of "Ridin' on the Gravy Train" by the Thunder Company, but again, even though this box certainly feels varied, there's an overriding scheme to it that makes it all fit together like a giant, glowing neon hymn to the wonderful excesses and eccentricities of hip '60s London.
