BONUS 4 OF 5

EARL GAINES - The Best Of Luck To You '66 @320

Earl Gaines was born in Decatur, Alabama in 1935. In the early 50s he moved to Nashville, and found work both singing and playing drums in R&B clubs. He worked with the band Louis Brooks and his Hi-Toppers, and also sang on demos for R&B songwriter Ted Jarrett. He recorded one of Jarrett's songs with the Hi-Toppers, "It's Love Baby (24 Hours A Day)" , and it became a massive hit when released on Excello Records, getting to #2 on the national R&B chart. There were more singles with the Hi-Toppers, but as Louis Brooks was unwilling to tour Gaines soon went solo. Over the next few years he recorded singles for various small labels, but gradually the touring became less frequent, and by the 60s was having to find work outside the music industry to support himself.
In 1966 he was signed to the HBR label with the help of Nashville radio DJ Bill 'Hoss' Allen, who also became his producer. His first single with the label, "The Best Of Luck To You", became a #28 R&B hit. He also recorded a full album that was released on HBR, featuring some really great southern soul and blues material, including a re-recording of "24 Hours A Day". (Record Runner)

BONUS 5 OF 5

GRAHAM PARKER & THE RUMOUR - Howlin’ Wind (With Bonus Track)’76 (2001 25th Year Anniversary Reissue) @320

Graham Parker made two essential albums that will stand the test of time as some of the best and most soulful music ever recorded: Howlin’ Wind & Heat Treatment. He could have retired after these two masterpieces - none of his other albums can even come close (and i have them all). I will argue this point with anyone. (Gyro1966)

Digitally remastered 25th anniversary edition of Parker's opening salvo of a long, distinguished recording career. The album was hailed by critics in 1976 as one of the best debut records ever, no doubt due Parker's incredible songs and the seasoned experience of his backing band which had long cut their chops in pubs around England and whose members included Brinsley Schwarz himself, Martin Belmont from Ducks Deluxe and Stephen Goulding and Andrew Bodnar from Bontemps Roulez. Includes the Parker classics "Don't Ask Me Questions", "White Honey", "Back to Schooldays", "Soul Shoes" and the the title track. Includes liner notes penned by Parker and exclusive photos.

I believe there are two Graham Parkers. The one who made the all-time Classic desert island worthy first two albums, and the one who made all the rest of the good to pretty good albums afterwards.

Thanks Gyro for the Graham Parker! All your hard work doesn't go by unnoticed, Killer blog, killer contributions and thankfully not the mean-spirited, egotistical ("my taste is better than yours", why do listen to this...") to and froing that some blogs can, and sometimes have descended into.

Gyro and RYP, as always thanks for this incredible blog. Gyro, I mostly agree with you about Graham Parker. The first two albums are all time great albums. I would also put Squeezing Out the Sparks very close to these two, and there are some outstanding early live shows floating about. I had some on cassette that of course I can't find. Since, then though Parker has never been bad. He makes consistently worthwhile records, some very good, some good and some just decent, but, oh those first two albums.

@Gyro...THANKS for the Graham Parker...i almost agree with you...but when i put "Struck By Lightning" i think "is best Parker's ever", other days i put "Mona Lisa's" and the same comes to mind, yesterday i'm playing "Consequence" and thinking to myself "what a gem of an album...best parker's ever..." you know what i mean?..for me is one of these artists with a regular quality with occasional peaks...but i'm
at your side in consider "Wind" as one of the most perfect first albums you can hear. LOVE always Graham!

Thanks again for all...
Greetings

@ clash - thanks for that Big Joe Turner & Roomful of Blues download. Roomful are a local band who hit the big time, and this particular album is difficult to find.

Very nice - Tanx!

I'm always going to give Squeezing Out Sparks a slight edge over the first two Parkerillas only because of the creative wild card that was Jack Nitzsche.

Gyro, as much as I hold "Howlin' Wind" and "Heat Treatment" in very, very high esteem, THE GP & R album is "Squeezing Out Sparks" for me.

I also love love love "Acid Bubblegum."

He also recorded, with Nona Hendrix, one fantastic Christmas song, "Soul Christmas," which GP fans should seek out.

Gyro, I agree that the first two G.P. albums--particularly 'Heat Treatment'--are brilliant.

But I think you pay 'Squeezing Out Sparks' a disservice, lumping it with the remainder of Parker's catalogue and considering it just more product.

It isn't.
