"ESSENTIAL ALABAMA BLUES" (1926-1952)

As students of the blues will know, the best music is often made in the most oppressive conditions. Discrimination and hardship led many African-Americans to abandon Alabama; they took their music with them, and this is how Alabama's blues spread to other parts of the United States. The musicians gathered here may have made their name in other locations, but their music is a direct and immensely entertaining link back to the Yellowhammer State where they were born and raised.trax disc 1:

Bill 'Mr Stress' Miller, master harp player and bandleader passed away in Cleveland Ohio this past Tuesday. He did his duty as a bluesman, during the eighties he lived above the Euclid Tavern, where the Mr Stress Blues Band played three nights a week for many years. He was a Butterfield disciple, and a major Albert King fan. He was a member of the first class of inductees to The Cleveland Blues Hall of Fame, along with Robert Lockwood, Big Maybelle, and Bullmoose Jackson.

JAMES INTVELD - Introducing James Intveld (Bear Family CD) ’95

Writing, producing, and playing all instruments is a daunting task for anyone, but young James Intveld handles the responsibilities like an accomplished veteran, while projecting a good deal of charm and personality into each song. He's transparently influenced by Elvis Presley, but a number of songs are updated somewhat by an atmospheric ambience similar to that of Chris Isaak, although without the sleek production of an Isaak album. "Kermit Vale" is the surprise, a black, almost Irish folk song, which reveals that Intveld's heart is clearly not restricted to revival rock & roll. (Allmusic)

Gryo - thanks for the Tav collection!

I second the thanks to G for the Falco collection. There's not much better than a wide-ranging, obscure, eye-opening "mix tape" by a pro. This one goes right up to the top of the playlist. With great thanks to the maestro "G" for providing it here.

Thank you so much Gyro for the Tav Falco compilation. What impeccable tastes (both his and yours)! You wouldn't happen to have his recent Hip Flask, a compilation of his own oeuvre, by any chance?

loving the Tav compliation... and always have enjoyed the "Songs We Taught " comps when they surface...

speaking of that, does anyone have copies of either ---

"Songs Then New York Dolls Taught Us" and "Songs the Dukes of Hamburg Taught Us"....

At one point, I think they were on Mr Eliminator blogspot (maybe Mr Eliminator created them himself)

As a native Alabaman, I blush to admit I don't have a lot of these essential 'Bama blues, so thanks for these (and they opened up just fine).

But the provocative dish on the menu today is this stew made by Mr Falco. Martin Denny on the same disc with Bobby Bland! I'm laughing with delight already...
