Goldmine label compilations can be a bit patchy but 'Deep Soul Inferno' doesn't miss a beat - it's easily as good as the first (and best) volume of Ace's 'Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures' series, which set the standard for the entire genre. There are few 'names' here except Gloria 'Tainted Love' Jones, and maybe Spencer Wiggins and Otis Clay, but as the Dave Godin CDs prove, obscurity is often the hallmark of quality - these songs were simply too intense to be hits. It's out of print but well worth tracking down. (The Soul Detective)

Many many thanks for the Deep Soul Inferno. Too much Northern soul out there in the ether, not enough southern/deep soul ! (well, to my taste anyway).
Thanks again,
François from France
Thank you for the Soul!!
Sounds good! Thanks RYP

Thanx - I was looking for the dangerous doo wop series the other day - anyone a volume of that?

King Vocal Groups Vol. 3: Hunky Dory @320
Founded in Cincinnati in 1943 by one Syd Nathan, King Records originated as a vehicle for country music, but in the years following World War II the label moved into R&B -- classic hits like Wynonie Harris' "Good Rockin' Tonight," Billy Ward & the Dominoes' "Sixty-Minute Man," and Little Willie John's "Fever" not only established King among the dominant R&B labels in the nation, but were also pivotal in the evolution of rock & roll. When James Brown signed to the Federal subsidiary in 1956, the company's towering position in American pop music history was assured, but the hits and the hall of famers tell only part of the King story -- during the late '50s and early '60s, the label was also a hotbed of doo wop and soul harmony groups, and although none of their seemingly countless singles enjoyed an impact comparable to King's most legendary releases, their consistency and quality are typically topnotch. This third volume in Ace's superb King Vocal Groups series compiles still more of these singles, which run the gamut from angelic doo-wop to gyrating soul -- not only is the sound quality excellent and the liner notes extensive and well-written, but several of these sides are seeing the light of day for the first time ever. Highlights include the Guytones' "Hunky Dory," the Dikes' "Don't Leave Poor Me," and the Lamplighters' "Tell It to Me." (Jason Ankeny, Allmusic)
1. Hunky Dory - the Guytones
2. Drop Down to My Place - the Strangers
3. A Friend in Need - the Checkers
4. Angel in the Sky - Georgie Dorn
5. Come Back - the Blue Chips
6. Since I Fell for You - the Buckeyes
7. How Can You Treat Me This Way - the Magic-Tones

11. Tell It to Me - the Lamplighters
12. Appointment with Love - the Blue Chips
13. Lovers and Losers - the Guytones
14. Darling Please Be Mine - Kenny Martin
15. Light Me Up - the Dikes
16. Begging You Please - the Buckeyes
17. Why Are We Apart - the Midnighters
18. Too Late for School - Georgie Dorn
19. When I Kneel Down to Pray - the Magic-Tones
20. Sad Sad Feeling - Cathy Ryan & Admirals
21. Humpty Dumpty (Had a Great Fall) - the Mystics

King Vocal Groups Vol. 4: Do Be You @320
King Records was founded in Cincinnati, OH, by Syd Nathan in 1943, and was one of several umbrella imprints that Nathan ran, including Federal and the New Jersey-based DeLuxe (which Nathan purchased in 1952). The aggregate labels released an impressive array of singles, most of them firmly in the straight R&B camp, but also tracked several harmony vocal groups working in what has come to be known as the doo wop style. Unfortunately, none of the King camp's doo wop releases generated much -- if any -- national attention, and are primarily remembered today only by collectors and historians of the genre. Do Be You is the fourth in a series from Ace Records to document this side of King/Federal/DeLuxe's roster, and while nothing here creatively reinvents anything, the quality is uniformly solid. Highlights include two impressive and energetic sides from 1960, "That's the Way I Feel" and "I Want Love," by the Mascots, who went on to later, greater fame as the O'Jays, the title track, "Do Be You," a previously unreleased 1955 gem from Otis Williams & the Charms, and the culturally tragic and sad "Fallen Angel" by the Hurricanes from 1957, a cut that demonstrates the harsh morality by which women were judged in the era. "Cold Cash," a calypso-themed number from the Federals (who had previously -- and would subsequently -- record as the Wheels), is another highlight here. Ultimately, this collection -- like its three predecessors -- will appeal mostly to collectors of the vocal group genre, since nothing here came even close to being a hit, but given a chance, it'll grow on you, particularly the Mascots/O'Jays cuts. (Steve Leggett, Allmusic)

2. In The Palm Of My Hand - The Swallows
3. Fallen Angel - The Hurricanes

THE UPTOWN SAVAGES - Rock 'N' Roll With You '15 @320
Sleazy Greazy Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll music. New Orleans & Chicago 50s style R&B by way of Milwaukee, WI. A full-tilt dirty boogie party album for your next boozy soiree. Music tailor made for dancing, drinking, & breaking laws.
Founded in 1998 by front man Jonny Z, upright bass player Matt "The Ratt" Davis and guitar player Rob "Bobby Rivera" Seiser, The Uptown Savages have been a mainstay in Milwaukee's music scene for over a decade, gaining ground with their first release "Rocket Drivin' Daddy" in 2001 and again with "Crazy, Crazy, Crazy" in 2006.
The Uptown Savages are a 7 piece band featuring piano and saxophone in addition to the traditional Upright Bass, Guitar, Drum and Vocals. The group's music is largely influenced by the R&B and Black Rock tradition of the late forties to the early sixties with a definite nod to the rockabilly and swamp pop genres.
The group has performed steadily since it's inception performing at clubs, festivals and parties throughout Wisconsin with occasional trips to Minneapolis and Chicago, including the Rockin' Fifties Fest in Green Bay, WI in 2003 and again in 2007 to great response.
Over the years and a few member changes the Savages have focused and sharpened their sound; The band is now stronger than ever.
