You Don't Know Me: Rediscovering Eddy Arnold ’13 @320

Eddy Arnold had an amazing career. He recorded his first single in 1945, charted 147 songs, 28 of which were number one hits, released over 100 albums, and sold over 85 million records. Over a stretch from 1947 through 1948 he outsold the entire pop division at his label RCA Records, owning the number one song at the top of the country charts for an astounding 60 straight weeks in 1948 (he only missed the top for two weeks in November that year), and no other recording artist has lodged Top Ten hits in seven straight decades. And he did all this without much fanfare, without wearing Nudie suits or big hats, without drinking binges or drug problems, and if there was a steadier or more consistent artist in the modern recording era, well, there really isn't. Yet Arnold is largely unknown to contemporary music fans a decade-and-change into the 21st century, while his contemporary for a time, Hank Williams, is revered and namechecked constantly. Williams deserves his accolades and adoration, of course, but Arnold, whose smooth, string-sweetened Nashville sound was at the other end of the scale from Williams, deserves it as well. Between the two of them, these two artists set the end poles for the template of modern country music. This striking tribute, set in motion by Arnold's grandson R. Shannon Pollard, himself a musician, and produced by Cheetah Chrome (with Don Cusic), features all manner of contemporary artists, from Frank Black to Peter Noone (yes, the Herman's Hermits guy), taking turns at interpreting songs from Arnold's vast catalog. Not everything works, of course, but most of it does, like Bobby Bare, Jr.'s warm take on "Make the World Go Away," Mary Gauthier's wonderful rendition of "You Don't Know Me," Jason Ringenberg's cow punk and rockabilly-laced "Texarkana Baby," Drivin' N' Cryin's beautiful version of "Wreck of the Old 97," and Jason Isbell's moving "Johnny Reb, That's Me," arguably the best moment here. It adds up to a fine testament to Arnold's work and legacy. He passed in 2008 and there certainly won't be another like him. (Steve Leggett, Allmusic)

R.L. BURNSIDE - Mississippi Hill Country Blues '84 @320

It's a pleasure to hear R.L. Burnside's early acoustic blues played the way he learned them in the hill country of Northern Mississippi. Three of these tracks date from 1967 and were recorded in Coldwater, MS by folklorist George Mitchell, while the remaining 16 were recorded in the early '80s by Swingmaster operator Leo Bruin in Groningen, Netherlands. This is Burnside playing solo (and mainly) acoustic country blues with the only addition to his guitar and voice being the harmonica of Red Ramsey on "Rolling and Tumbling." While you can't go wrong with the purchase of any Burnside recording, these Swingmaster sessions portray a natural relaxed unaccompanied Burnside. Recorded long before the mid-'90s, Fat Possum releases would find him playing in an electric band with his son and son-in-law and occasionally experimenting with sampling and indie rock leanings. (Allmusic)

Fans of this Mississippi hill country blues patriarch who've been put off by his previous two albums, the hip-hop remix set Come On In and last year's trip-hip experiment, Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down, will enjoy this time capsule recorded in 1982 and 1967. It's Burnside in the raw, playing solo on acoustic guitar as he did for his neighbors for most of his early career--when farming was still his profession. Burnside reprised "Miss Maybelle," "Mellow Peaches," "Poor Boy," "Jumper on the Line," and others among these songs on his more recent albums for Fat Possum Records, but these early versions capture his driving blend of one-chord rhythm with lightning decorations of slide and melody already fully developed.
If anything, Burnside's guitar playing has slowed over the years, but it's taken on gravity as it's grown more spare, just as his voice--high and limber here--has added character with the imperfections of age. Burnside, who turned 73 in November, is also a more idiosyncratic musician now. Nonetheless, it's a pleasure to hear him doing numbers like "Bad Luck and Trouble" nearly 20 years ago, fusing the influences of John Lee Hooker and Fred McDowell into the potent style that's made him one of today's premier practitioners of old-time rural blues. --Ted Drozdowski

RAMSEY LEWIS - Movie Album '66 @320

Jazzy and classy – and one of the first of Ramsey's albums to feature him working with larger arrangements instead of the usual trio. In this case, the whole thing was arranged and conducted by Richard Evans – with a spacey hip sound that's not too far from some of Ramsey's later work for Cadet with Charles Stepney. Evans' arrangements are in that strident stepping Soulful Strings mode – and Ramsey's working the keys hard and soulfully over the top, bouncing around the piano in a hard mode that wipes away any schmaltz that you might have caught on the records otherwise. The whole thing grooves quite nicely in a mix of spacey jazz and easy soul – and titles include "The Pawnbroker", "Saturday Night After The Movies", "Girl Talk", "Matchmaker", "Return To Paradise", "Goin Hollywood", "From Russia With Love", and "The Gentle Rain".  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The Movie Album is an album by pianist Ramsey Lewis featuring theme music from several motion pictures which was recorded in 1966 and released on the Cadet label.[1]
