SHOCKING BLUE "Singles A’s and B’s"

Shocking Blue had great hooks to spare... So why were they only able to score one real hit ("Venus") here in the U.S.A.? A fickle record-buying public? Radio station/disc jockey indifference? Poor record distribution? Who knows. The end result was that these songs didn't get the exposure they deserved.
Like most people on this side of the Atlantic, I only knew the Shocking Blue for "Venus," before I picked up this collection. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they recorded many songs that are just as good as, if not better than, this classic. Mariska Veres has a powerful voice which is a dead ringer for Grace Slick. My favorite songs on the "A-side" disc (besides "Venus"), are "Mighty Joe," "Inkpot," "Rock In The Sea" (unusual key and structure on this one), "Sally Was A Good Old Girl" and "Gonna Sing Me A Song," with a great hook which has been bouncing around in my head for the past week (The drum fills on this track sound just ever-so-slightly "off," which I think adds to its charm.) My favorites on the "B-side" disc are "Keep It If You Want It" (It would have made a great A-side, but was relegated to the B-side of a promo-only 45), the bongo-driven "Wild Wind," "Is This A Dream" and "Hot Sand" (I remember flipping my old "Venus" 45 over to check out this track.) (Record Runner)Formed in 1967 by former Motions guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen, the Dutch quartet Shocking Blue originally had a lineup of VanLeeuwen on guitar, lead vocalist Fred DeWilde, bass player Klaasje Van der Wal, and drummer Cornelius Van der Beek, and the initial configuration of the band had a minor homeland hit with “Lucy Brown Is Back in Town” a year later in 1968. Things really got moving, though, when DeWilde was replaced by sultry singer Mariska Veres, whose sexy presence and solid singing brought the band a second Netherlands hit, “Send Me a Postcard,” and then a huge international smash with “Venus” in 1970 after the group had signed to Jerry Ross' Colossus Records imprint. Although Shocking Blue's albums (1968’s Shocking Blue, 1969’s At Home, 1970’s Scorpio’s Dance, 1971’s 3rd Album, 1972’s Inkpot, 1972’s Attila, 1973’s Dream on Dreamer, and 1974’s Good Times) featured progressive rock elements and inventive arrangements thanks to VanLeeuwen's writing and production skills, the band was essentially marketed as a pop singles unit, and while they scored several subsequent hits in their homeland, none of the group’s releases approached the massive saturation success of “Venus.” Veres left Shocking Blue in 1974 to pursue a solo career, and while there have been various reunions and different touring incarnations of the band over the years (including a version fronted by Veres in the '90s), its creative history ended then. VanLeeuwen later re-surfaced in the folk/jazz group Galaxy-Lin, while his most famous composition, “Venus,” continued to see play on oldies stations. Veres died of cancer in 2006 at the age of 59. PET RECORDS is an amazing, but obscure, record label that specializes in compilations of little known soft-pop, soft-psych, harmony-psych, sunshine-pop, etc. tunes. Most of the tracks are by unknown artists, primarily from Southern California, who recorded in the late '60s and very early '70s.

Review Volume 2 -Allmusic
The second volume of the Soft Sounds for Gentle People series digs up another fantastic batch of groovy sunshine pop obscurities from the heyday of the West Coast scene, possibly even surpassing its predecessor for sheer quality and consistency -- it's amazing how much of this stuff the major labels were putting out, how much of it is truly great, and how much of it has for so long remained relegated to the dustbin of history. Like last time, there's a strong psychedelic dimension to these songs, and nothing would seem glaringly out of place on a Nuggets compilation, but the radiant harmonies and lush orchestral arrangements wonderfully capture a more peaceful, even earnest side of late-'60s flower-power pop -- nothing here sounds horribly dated, either, especially standouts like the Collage's "My Mind's at Ease," the Pleasure Fair's "Nursery Rhyme," the Garden Club's "Little Girl Lost and Found," and the Family's "San Francisco Waits." The legitimacy of this disc is a question and some of the material sounds mastered directly from the original vinyl, but the sequencing and liner notes are excellent and it's hard not to wish official releases were handled with so much obvious care and affection.

A couple from "The Tan Canary", the amazing, Johnny Adams.

Johnny Adams- I Won't Cry: The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959-1964(CD)

http://www22.zippyshare.com/v/BkH4zUVs/file.html

Ace's 2015 compilation I Won't Cry: The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959-1964 covers familiar territory but in an appealingly thorough fashion. Adams had only one nationally charting hit on Ric or Ron -- "A Losing Battle," which went to 27 in 1962 -- but they were popular in his native New Orleans and over the years remained favorites of fans of Crescent City soul. Adams tended to be a little smoother than a lot of his Big Easy contemporaries: there's a recognizable NO lilt to some of the songs, but he was more of a crooner, sounding equally comfortable on dramatic ballads and lusher pop crossovers. This characteristic meant that he could slide with the smoother soul styles of the late '60s and '70s, which is when he gained his greatest popularity, but these somewhat grittier productions also suit him well; it's a nice blend of his velvet touch and earthy rhythms. I Won't Cry showcases this appealing combination. At 24 tracks, it's ten songs longer than the 1991 Rounder compilation of the same name and that extra space is warranted because each of the sides here has considerable charm; there's a reason why Adams is a widely acclaimed soul singer, and many of the reasons can be heard on this fine collection.- Thomas Erlewine

With first-class production by Scott Billington, the delicious Crescent City combo led by longtime Johnny Adams' cohort Walter "Wolfman" Washington on guitar with Red Tyler on tenor sax, From the Heart features Adams' perennially luxurious pipes and stands as one of his finest contemporary outings. Nice song selections were tapped from the pens of Tony Joe White, Percy Mayfield, Sam Cooke, and Doc Pomus. Adams unfurls his "mouth trombone" -- an uncanny vocal 'bone imitation -- on Mayfield's "We Don't See Eye to Eye."- Bill Dahl

Everyone who is in awe when listening to Shocking Blue's VENUS should have a listen to The Big Three featuring Mama Cass and their song "The Banjo Song" (aka "Oh Susannah"). Then you'll know where Venus comes from.

@Rocking-Byrd: So the Shocking Blue was never sued for this blatant and admitted plagiarism?

@Rocking-Byrd and JohnnyDiego: Wow! I never heard Banjo Song before. Clearly Shocking Blue used it for more than just inspiration. I always thought they threw in a guitar riff from Pinball Wizard too. But I still love "Venus." That twangy guitar solo is like a country/George Harrison lick too. With that sexy vocal, it's like the perfect pop rock song. Besides, everyone from Led Zep to the Cramps have borrowed - it's all just folk music, right?

Hello Jillem thank you very much for the Soft Sounds for Gentle People - I bought Vol 1 +2 years ago but they were hard to get in germany - very limited editions I guess. I also enjoyed the U - Spaces comps featured here. I like the diversity of musical styles in the Twilight Zone.

many thanks for all the shocking blue, fantastic and great work on this blog and some great people contributing

Yes, "Venus" was a direct steal of The Big Three's (not the Liverpool group) "Banjo Song," but Robby Van Leeuwen wrote a lot of great songs without any "help." One of them being "Love Buzz" that was later recorded by none other than Nirvana in the 90's.

Anonymous, Thanks for the education. Got it. Great weekend my friend.

To this day whenever I hear Venus I'm driving, my wife at my side, through a deeply dark and forbidding New Mexico desert at one o'clock in the morning. Never fails. So in my nostalgic remissness I'm still married to that 18 year old girl and Venus is still sung, as I thought then, by a young boy. (Sure sounded like it to me.)

Thanks Gyro for the Shocking Blue : I was 12 years old when I heard "Venus" for the first time and ... this song was magic ! But it makes me remember that one or two months later began the parties and this song was in every party. At this time I didn't knew how to dance rock and roll and I was waiting for the slows..

Thanks Clash for Johnny Adams , I've really enjoyed it

Thanks Jillem for "Soft songs for gentle people". I must wait next week to listen to it , but I've allways enjoyed what you bring us from torrents !!! Thanks again.
