LOU PRIDE - Memphis-El Paso Sessions 1970-73

Kudos to the Severn label for not only reviving the career and releasing new music from this under-the-radar '70s soulman, but for compiling this 13-track set of his earliest singles. These sides, recorded in the titular cities and time span, were only available as 45s and have become sought after collector's items for good reason: they smoke. Although Chicago bred Lou Pride didn't have much studio experience when he waxed these tunes, he sounds like an established pro. Seven songs were recorded for the tiny Suemi label out of El Paso with the rest originating from Memphis' famed Hi Studios featuring the legendary Willie Mitchell acting as producer. While the latter set of songs is strong enough with Hi studio hotshots such as the Hodges brothers (Teenie, Leroy, and Charles) and the Memphis Horns doing their patented thing, it's the Texas material that best exemplifies Pride's talent. He hedges his bets by recording "Your Love Is Fading" in both studios, but unfortunately neither was a hit despite it having a hook every bit as powerful as anything in Clarence Carter's catalog. Pride sings in the style of Tyrone Davis, smooth and yearning but capable of expressing sorrow and longing in the joyous context of terrific R&B. There is a strong James Brown undercurrent, not just in the funky cover of "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World," but in his own supercharged "Message to the People." All the selections but Brown's are Pride originals and most are terrific slices of steamy soul simmered with funky spices that will be treasured by any fan of classic American R&B. The running order is jumbled with the oldest cut, the crisp funk of "There's Got to Be Someone for Me," closing out the disc. The lack of track-specific recording dates is a major omission for a historical set such as this, but it remains a treasure trove of previously obscure soul music that spotlights one of the many great singers almost lost to history. JAMES GOVAN - I'm In Need (Charly LP, 1987)

An excellent Muscle Shoals recorded album from an excellent and unjustly obscure deep soul singer who recorded in the 60’s and early 70’s.

COWBOY - Reach For The Sky '71

While not exactly the house band for Phil Walden's Macon, GA-based Capricorn Records label, the members of the acoustic aggregate Cowboy -- consisting of Scott Boyer (guitars/violin/vocals), Tommy Talton (guitars/vocals), Bill Pillmore (piano/guitar/fiddle/vocals), Tomm Wynn (drums/percussion), George Clark (bass), and Pete Kowalke (guitars/vocals/drums) -- could be found on recordings by the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg Allman (whom they regularly supported), Alex Taylor, and Bonnie Bramlett. Their debut Reach for the Sky (1971) amply shows off their rural whimsy and substantial acoustic capacities. While their country-rock leanings are comparable to the Hearts & Flowers, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, or Pure Prairie League, they rely on their solid original material rather than adaptations and variations on traditional works and standards from the genre. However, as the mini-hoedown "Honey Ain't Nowhere" proves, they dew drop in for some unquestionably bluegrass-inspired pickin'. The succinct "Amelia's Earache" and "Pick Your Nose" are both off-the-wall indulgences that nicely balance out the stunning "Beautiful Friend" and the mid-tempo rocker "Stick Together," which bears all the earmarks of an early-'70s Allman Brothers side. Similarly, "Rip & Snort" features a strong repetitive rhythm that is accentuated by the guitarists in a tandem lead similar to that of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. Another recommended spin is the languid and laid-back "It's Time," as it wafts into a vibe reminiscent of Neil Young circa After the Gold Rush (1970). Reach for the Sky (1971) is full of pleasurable, if not slightly pastoral, music that is recommended for inclined ears who likewise favor Southern rock. (Allmusic)

Thank you Banana Peels for the ZZ & De Maskers collection! One of the lesser known Dutch beat bands who had some excellent tunes (and a few throwaways, of course).

And thanks to RYP for the Psych Archaeology series. There is some overlap on these U-SPace collections, but all of them are fantastic (and doubles can be deleted if needed).
