"It Came From Memphis" 2005

Memphis music is so much more than Elvis, who nevertheless is its prime and most successful example.I have always thought that Memphis is the secret music capital of the U.S.A.. In comparasion with the products of Nashville, there has always been in Memphis music a certain "hairy vitality", as the late Jean Shepherd would say. I would say that Memphis music is more inclusive than Nashville music. Memphis music is the blending or collision of different elements, much like American society itself. Memphis music is so much more than Elvis, who nevertheless is its prime and most successful example.
This is the third complilation that Robert Gordon has produced with the title It Came From Memphis. What he lacks in imagination in titling is more than made up by the breath and depth of its contents. The major labels of Memphis musical history (Sun, Stax & Hi) are well represented here. Many of its leading lights are also represented. For example, Jim Dickinson appears on three songs, as part of Mud Boy & the Neutrons covering the "5" Royales "Slummer D Slum" (very good, but not as great as the original), as a solo doing "Down in Mississippi and finally as lead singer of the Jesters' "Cadillac Man", the last great Sun record, a '66 record with the spirit of '56. Although Otis isn't around for this particular date (& neither is Rufus Thomas), the Stax contingent is well represented with Booker T. & the M.G.'s, The Mar-Keys, Eddie Floyd, William Bell's "You Don't Miss Your Water" and Issac Hayes' epic version of "By The Time I Get to Phoenix". Hi Records is present & accounted for with songs from Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson and Al Green with one of my favorite songs of his, "Simply Beautiful". Alex "LX" Chilton pops up here with Big Star's "September Gurls" and solo with "Hook or Crook" (I would have added the Box Tops' "Soul Deep" to complete that particular trifecta). There's Sun rockabilly madness with Billy Riley, Sonny Burgess, Jerry Lee Lewis & even Elvis as part of the Million Dollar Quartet and blues in the personages of Howlin' Wolf, Bobby Rush and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
In the midst of all these riches, there are three tracks that really struck me. The first one was "Spanish Delight" by The Bo-Keys, made up of Memphis musical vets, which sounded like vintage Booker T. & the M.G.'s. Another song was "Whitewash Station Blues" by the Memphis Jug Band, which made me realize where the Lovin' Spoonful got most of their style from (& john Sebastian his voice). Finally, the Reigning Sound's "If You Can't Give Me Everything" sounds and feels like Blond on Blond Dylan.
To finally finish up, this is a great compilation that is well worth picking up. This is a fine representation of the music of the Secret Music Capital of the U.S.A.. - By diskojoe (Salem, MA USA)

Reverend Horton Heat “Rev” (2014) 320
http://www42.zippyshare.com/v/0sglC71o/file.html
Their latest effort, it was shared all over the place when it came out last year, but I’ll include it here for completeness and in case anyone missed it. They bump up the rock a few notches since their last couple of albums, but not so much as to lose their signature psychobilly vibe.

Corey Harris “Blu.Black” (2009) 320
http://www42.zippyshare.com/v/XFBhnb2b/file.html
Another reggae release from this wide-ranging bluesman, folding-in new elements from smooth groove soul and classic “piano man” ballads. There’s really just one actual blues song here, ending the album on a high note for those of us waiting for a return to his original sound.

Teengenerate “Savage” (1996) 320
http://www42.zippyshare.com/v/gEpjgELm/file.html
Originally released as a 10” LP, they fire out another dose of grating and wailing lo-fi riff punk. If you listen closely, you’ll hear nods to everything from 60’s beach rock to 70’s glam punk to 80’s hardcore, all buried under a well-constructed wall of garage rock distorted production.

The Hentchmen “Ultra Hentch” (1994) 320
http://www35.zippyshare.com/v/2TJiNYYC/file.html
When these three Michigan garage revivalists busted on the scene, it reminded us all of what made the original 60’s garage explosion so great: teen trash rave-ups played by actual teenagers. This is about as pure as 60’s organ-beat garage rock can get, with none of the punk influences flying around them at the time.

Speaking about comps - today one more with Estrus bands, which proves that not all Estrus bands sound pretty much the same:-)

The other one is compilation album of garage rock and punk bands from Detroit, released in 2001. Put together by Jack White of The White Stripes, it featured bands such as Von Bondies, Dirtbombs, Bantam Rooster, Soledad Brothers and Detroit Cobras, all in the same studio and equipment...

Best regards to everyone…on request for @oldrocker99…More John Fahey…@seamav post “Requia” & “The Yellow Princess” on yesterday’s comments (Thanks, pal!)..let’s put some more on the basket…If someone want any other album, please make your requests, i can share a lot of stuff from Fahey (over 30 items)….

JOHN FAHEY – “Of Rivers And Religion” (1972) 320
http://www37.zippyshare.com/v/s0jMgF4Y/file.html

One of the (many) great beauties in Fahey's approach is just that: he takes his time and savors every last resonance he can wring from his guitar. This 1972 release was his first for a major label (originally on Reprise) It opens with "Steamboat Gwine 'Round de Bend," as gorgeous an example of Fahey's slide guitar work as he ever recorded, languid, soulful, and profound. Similarly, his medley of "Deep River" and "Ol' Man River" is steeped in Delta humidity, lazily floating downstream. The tracks with the brass band raise the ghosts of Dixieland, while some of the string accompaniment may recall Van Morrison. In any event,Fahey, major label or not, is simply himself, leisurely rolling along, sharply perceptive in his observations and sumptuously gorgeous in his evocations. A fine effort and certainly something that belongs on the shelves of any fan of the late, very great guitarist.

JOHN FAHEY – “America” (1971) 320
http://www85.zippyshare.com/v/69v00Vx4/file.html

inventive acoustic guitar instrumentals that draw from folk and blues, with a sedate presentation that has a relaxing effect. America was originally envisioned as a double LP, but around half of the material remained unreleased when it was cut down to a single disc; the CD restores the other nine songs that would have been included on the original program, pushing the length of the album to 79 minutes.

JOHN FAHEY – “The Dance Of Death & Other Plantation Favorites” (1965) 320
http://www85.zippyshare.com/v/7nvZtpNJ/file.html

Fahey's music does have strong southern roots. Unaccompanied, the acoustic guitarist/instrumentalist demonstrates his love of African-American blues as well as the Anglo-American country, folk, and hillbilly music of Appalachia. This is essentially a folk album, but a folk album with strong country and blues leanings; Reissued on CD in 1999 with four bonus tracks (including an interpretation of "Steel Guitar Rag"), this album makes it clear that even back in 1964 Fahey was quite original.

Hope you like it!

…a bunch of fine comps….

V.A. – “Thank You Friends. The Ardent Records Story” 2cd (2008) 320
CD1
http://www85.zippyshare.com/v/aqb0SHjq/file.html
CD2
http://www85.zippyshare.com/v/gMXNQ8cR/file.html

Ardent has a history that stretches back far before Big Star, as they issued their first single in 1960, a full twelve years before #1 Record. This history is chronicled on Ace's astounding double-disc set Thank You Friends: The Ardent Record Story, the first thorough document of Ardent and, along with it, the Memphis underground pop movement of the '60s and '70s. Thank You Friends makes a convincing case that the power pop glory years couldn't have happened without the foundation that Ardent head honcho John Fry laid during that first stretch of the '60s, when he was cutting garage bands and folk-rock. Big Star is clearly central to the Ardent story and Thank You Friends, which is appropriate as they are at the core of the label's mythology and legacy, as there were countless bands in the next decade as indebted to them as they were to the Beatles. A convincing case for the uniqueness of the Ardent-based pop scene -- not just through Big Star but beyond -- through its wealth of ageless power pop.

V.A. – “Downtown Soulville . 24 Solid Blasts Of 60’s Soul” (Released 1998) 320
http://www85.zippyshare.com/v/N0tBLxaQ/file.html

Here's a fabulous compilation with a bunch of old obscure soul bands that might have been forgotten. Makes you wanna twist, shake and dance all night long!

V.A. – “Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas 1967-1976” (Released 2010) 320
http://www85.zippyshare.com/v/UpunK3id/file.html

This album should serve as a master class for those entranced by the funky, heavy psychedelic wonders of the Tropicalia movement and all that it spawned. Each song contained on this album has never been reissued, and has been restored from the best source possible and remastered for near-perfect sound quality.

V.A. – “Achilifunk. Gipsy Soul 1969-1979” (2007) VBR
http://www85.zippyshare.com/v/02i61LOP/file.html

The sleeve notes included in Achili Funk: Gipsy Soul 1969-1979 describe the style as "a proposal to recover the Afro-American influences that spilled Spanish music rooted in rumba and flamenco. Everything started in the '60s. The legendary rumba singer Peret set the start of it all from Barcelona, the birthplace of the new genre. Spanish rumba comes mainly from the collision of flamenco with Afro-Cuban rumba, funk, soul, and Fania Sound." there isn't a single unworthy cut here -- no sleepers -- and this is no novelty set. Those who simply crave nostalgia for its hipster kitsch value will soon tire of the music here because it is so diverse, knotty, and magnificent; it may be informed by the past because that's where it came from, but it's still ahead of its time in Anglo-world.

Enjoy!

The Tuff Darts-Tuff Darts! 1978 @ 320
http://www62.zippyshare.com/v/nIgNxgC0/file.html

From the bowels of the CBGB club in NYC comes one of the more criminally under appreciated bands from the scene. The band that gained fame as the band fronted by Robert Gordon on the "Live from CBGB" release, came out of the shadows with this release in 1978 sans Gordon. This album was a neighborhood favorite of ours, courtesy of a promo copy put in our hands by my now deceased buddy's truck driving pops who delivered to one of the record labels distribution hubs. He put a ton of great music in our teenage hands. Truly should have been much larger, time has shown this to be a very solid rock and roll record, mining many styles. Lots of big names show up on the credits, Ian Hunter electric Piano, The Shirts backing vocals, Bob Clearmountain engineering, Lew Delgatto sax, Eric Weissberg pedal steel guitar. I love every song on this album but the standouts are All For The Love Of Rock and Roll, Who's Been Sleeping Here, Your Love Is Like A Nuclear Waste, Head Over Heels, Slash.... enjoy!
