A companion album to Various - The Sire Machine Turns You Up, which came out at around the same time. Two different labels but sharing some of the same artists. (Ramones, Patti Smith, Dead Boys, Richard Hell & Faming Groovies appear on both). Never quite figured why that was...
...Money was tight around 1978 so these two samplers served an important purpose.
It was great to hear The Ramones, Dead Boys, Richard Hell and Patti Smith from the US axis.... plus The Damned from the UK.
Like the Sire comp it's got a rare Patti Smith track on there and that has stood the test of time I think. You've got your token Aussie band, an RnB French outfit and an earlier 70s, but influential, throw-back (Dolls). Some of it's unessential, but in those days we took what we could get. Those 'punks' on the back sleeve always looked a bit suspect to me. Did they come from central casting? - Bradx
