Emmy Lou Harris – WBAI NYC 1970 (with David Bromberg)

This recording was made years before Emmylou was discovered playing in a small club by Rick Roberts, Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons from the Flying Burrito Brothers. She was still more of a country-folk singer then, promoting “Gliding Bird”, her first album (released 1969). Her first name was still shown as two words (Emmy Lou). She wouldn’t release another LP until 1975 (“Pieces Of The Sky”), although she appeared on Gram Parsons’ two solo LPs in the early 70s.

Saint Etienne - Too Young To Die (Singles 1990-1995) (1995)

Although their albums were considerably more consistent than most dance-pop acts, Saint Etienne's high points were always their singles. Too Young to Die collects all of their singles, from their debut disco cover of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" to their last, "He's on the Phone," providing a thoroughly entertaining chronicle of the group's career.

Big Grey said,

[ Here in Sydney, Australia, my download speed depends on time of day. At the moment, 3.00 am, it's taking 7 minutes to download an 80MB file. I assume that this is because it is daytime in Europe and the U.S.A. and there is more load on the servers.

Yesterday afternoon, I did parallel downloads of two files totalling 690MB which took around 90 seconds. ]
I live about 100 km west of you. I usually download during the evening - morning the other side of the world. This AM I downloaded both of RICK SAUNDERS video files from Krakenfiles in less than two minutes.
So, thank you.
However, still doesn't explain why Krakenfilews is the only downloader I am having trouble with. Maybe most of them don't have servers in the US.

RICK SAUNDERS, thank you for .......

Great Stuff. Brings back memories.
But the UK wasn't the only country where PubRock was king.
AJ over at 'Themes From Great Cities'
recently posted a comp, 'Aussie Pub Bands"

[If you really know almost nothing about the Australian Underground scene, you can start downloading these bands: Died Pretty, The Saints, Radio Birdman, Hoodoo Gurus, The Celibate Rifles, The Birthday Party, The Stems, DiVinyls, DM3, Infinite Void, Lipstick Killers, Marching Girls, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, The Boys Next Door, The Church, The Datsuns, The New Christs, The Victims]

But even that only begins to cover the subject in OZ!
Then there were European Pub Bands.

Free Friday Films brings you some classic 80's Nostalgia with

POISON IVY

If you were alive but below the drinking age in the 80's, this one's for you. And if you weren't, this one is still for you. Poison Ivy is the quintessential 80's TV teen movie- a ridiculous, groan-inducing yet ironically fascinating window into what Hollywood believed America represented during the Reagan years: sex, sex, money, and more sex. Of course, "sex" in a camp full of middle-school boys boils down to sneaking Playboys and looking up girls' skirts, but if TV reflects the values of its era, Poison Ivy is a good case study for what a mess that era was.

What makes this particular example so special, however, is its stars: Michael J. Fox, who was at the peak of his fame in 1985 with both Back to the Future and Family Ties, and Nancy McKeon, best known as the tomboyish-yet-sexy Jo on The Facts of Life with her "I'm just a girl from Jersey" demeanor. Together, these two made an unorthodox- yet perfect- star duo every kid from 8 to 18 could fantasize over, which is worth noting because it's actually a rare pairing for TV Land. Both Fox and McKeon are far from the bland, Ken-and-Barbie types we were usually spoonfed, but that's why this works so well- both actors had a youthful and genuine charisma that went beyond the plastic. We actually liked them as people. You can imagine the hormonal excitement of seeing them paired in a romantic comedy as counselors in a summer camp, away from parental supervision.

But love isn't just for the counselors- it's for a whole cabin full of testosterone-raging boys as well. From the dorky budding writer (Brian) who gives the film its name, to the ever-scheming and fast-talking Jerry Disbro, pubescent lust is pretty much the main motivation for everything in this film, leading our heroes to all sorts of clichéd activities like sneaking into the girl's camp across the lake. Oh yes, no trope is left unturned here at Poison Ivy, but if you're looking for the poster child, O.G. summer camp film, look no further. It even has the prerequisite blowhard camp director in the form of the great Richard Klein, complete with his sexually-starved blonde bombshell wife who hits on any strapping young councillor willing to help her forget her miserable marriage. Because this was a tv film meant for families, we're spared the gratuitous boob shots found in so many sex-starved 80's films like Meatballs. That's right- here, the sex is nice and suppressed, hinted at but never flat-out acknowledged, which actually makes the film much more sociologically fascinating.

Ultimately, its Fox and McKeon- our quirky stars- that we really care about. She, of course, is engaged, not that this fact deters MJ one bit- oh no, he's a player, like every good 17 year old male protagonist should be, even though Fox never really pulls that persona off very convincingly- he's just too nice of a guy. Gotta love the 80's, where pestering a woman all day every day despite her consistent insistence to be left alone is seen as a charming male trait. Besides, when we finally meet her fiancée, we realize he's an even bigger blowhard than the camp director, which makes her eventual infidelity ok. Such are the rules of Hollywood. By the end, all these annoying kids have charmed their way into our hearts, everyone experiences some personal growth, and McKeon ditches the dork and ends up with Fox- which is exactly what we've been clamoring for since the start. It's basically porn for the pre-porn set. None of this is a surprise, yet thanks to Larry Elikann's sure handed 80's-formula-directing, Poison Ivy isn't trying to surprise. It's here to fulfill our sexual needs in a wholesome, Reagan-era, nuclear family kind of way.
