Nick Drake
Nicholas Rodney Drake (19 June 1948 – 25 November 1974) was an English singer-songwriter known for his acoustic guitar-based songs. He did not find a wide audience during his lifetime, but his work gradually achieved wider notice and recognition.
Drake signed to Island Records when he was 20 years old and a student at the University of Cambridge. He released his debut album, Five Leaves Left, in 1969. He recorded two more albums—Bryter Layter (1971) and Pink Moon (1972), which both sold poorly. Drake's reluctance to perform live, or be interviewed, contributed to his lack of success. There is no known video footage of the adult Drake; he was only ever captured in still photographs and in home footage from his childhood.
Drake experienced depression, particularly during the latter part of his life, a fact often reflected in his lyrics. On completion of his third album, 1972's Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. On 25 November 1974, Drake died from an overdose of a prescribed antidepressant; he was 26 years old. Whether his death was an accident or suicide has not been resolved.
Drake's music remained available through the mid-1970s, but the 1979 release of the retrospective album Fruit Tree allowed his back catalogue to be reassessed. By the mid-1980s, Drake was being credited as an influence by such artists as Robert Smith of the Cure and Peter Buck of R.E.M. In 1985, The Dream Academy reached the UK and US charts with "Life in a Northern Town", a song written for and dedicated to Drake. By the early 1990s, he had come to represent the "doomed romantic" musician in the UK music press and was cited as an influence by artists including Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Aimee Mann, Beck, Robyn Hitchcock and the Black Crowes. The first Drake biography appeared in 1997, followed in 1998 by the documentary film A Stranger Among Us.

In 1974, my first, very tentative band lost its lead guitarist, or he lost us, I'm not sure which. One of our friends volunteered her new boyfriend to take his place. Peter had most recently been playing with Andy Gibb and to say that his ability far outstripped ours was an understatement. As my friendship with Peter grew, I found out that, prior to turning professional with Andy, he had worked in the ABC (government broadcaster) music library and, when he left there, had "borrowed" some of his favourite records. My two favourites of the abums that he lent me were Trapeze's "You Are The Music", leading to a life long love of Glenn Hughes' voice, and Nick Drake's Bryter Layter.
I have never been one for lyrics, but Nick's words spoke to me. The images he paints with his words, particularly delivered in that wonderful breathy voice, force me to listen every time. I've lent his music to a lot of people over the years and only had one negative reaction. A co-worker called it "Music to commit suicide to", which I can almost understand on a supeficial level (I think that she must have only listened to Pink Moon). Both my sons love Nick's music. Mike's (36) favourite is Pink Moon, which I find curious as I don't find its stark nature as endearing as the other two albums. My favourite is still Bryter Layter.
Nick's fans now are legion. Unfortunately for Nick, his popularity didn't begin until after his tragically brief life.
This series of posts is a grab bag of official releases, bootlegs (a lot of bootlegs), as it seems that, with only three "official" albums, every last note that Nick recorded at home has been picked over and released in one form or another, officially or unofficially, along with tribute albums and documentaries.

Thank you for the Nick Drake. I didn't have a decent copy of TIA2.
I heard Northern Sky on the Greater Antilles Sampler decades ago. I loved the song, but didn't think about it for years. I was in a record store sometime in the late 80s and I saw the Fruit Tree box set. It's been a favorite ever since. My Nick collection is kind of ridiculous, and I will post anything you don't once you are done.

Many thanks for the Nick Drake. I stumbled upon Nick Drake in 1972 while in my favourite
record shop and someone put on 'Pink Moon'. I bought it and it is still my favourite.
