Recently came across a bunch of soundboard recordings of John Fahey shows from the mid 70’s in fantastic sound. Fahey basically pioneered the concept of the self taught acoustic solo steel string guitarist which was later coined as ‘American Primitive.’ Others working within that genre include Leo Kottke, Robbie Basho, Glenn Jones, Jack Rose, Peter Lang, Terry Robb, etc. The term ‘primitive’ is a bit of a misnomer as all of these players are VERY skilled and can be jaw droppingly proficient. For the next week I’ll be posting a show a day for anyone who appreciates this sort of thing. To begin:

Big Gray thank you for the Mavericks and Raul Malo! I think I have ALL the albums but I am banking on you to surprise me with some I do not have. Great band in concert, they are hard-workers, touring frequently, genuinely nice people, and they seem to love their fans. I have seen them about 12 times always a great show. My next show with them is at the Ryman in early December. You got to love a Thursday night show and a couple of mid-week music filled nights on Broadway. Key is to get out of Nashville by Friday night, alive!

Back in the 1990s I had been living in Asia for decades. I heard an incredible version "True Love Ways" a couple of times, but couldn't find the source. Eventually I moved back to the US, heard the song again and discovered that it was by The Mavericks, and from a Buddy Holly tribute Album "Not Fade Away"
This Mavericks version still knocks me out.
