Grass Skirt is a UK based label that specializes in Hawaiian vintage recordings. They have a number of fine releases. I wanted to post Sam Alama & His Hawaiians 1928 to 1935 (Grass Skirt 6001) but couldn't since it's a recent release. Interested parties might want to seek that one out. This will be the last posting in this series. It was a fun side-project & I'm grateful for the knowledge & enthusiasm in which it was met.

The big cities have been the 'playground' for the first German Rock bands and of course your first thoughts are right. Big cities have rooms for exercising, pubs and schools for the first small venues and later the big city-halls and stadiums. But there's another reason. Due to the federal construction of Germany the broadcasting system was federal too. Most of you know the 'Westdeutschen Rundfunk' (WDR, Cologne) because of 'Rockpalast' and 'Radio Bremen' for the 'Beat Club'. But there are/were Southwest-Funk (SWR, Baden-Baden), Rias (Berlin) Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR, Hamburg), Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR, Stuttgart), Bavarian Rundfunk (Munich), Saarländischer Rundfunk (Saarbrücken),Hessischer Rundfunk (Frankfurt)..ZDF (Mainz) too. It was important for those early bands to be close in contact with these broadcasting companies. 'Can' and 'Tangerine Dream' had best connections, doing quite a lot of soundtracks for TV. Money to survive and to go on and public attention. And most record companies were settled down in the same cities.
The problem of German broadcasting companies, compared f.ex. to the BBC, was their ignorance of popular homemade music. And even WDR and Radio Bremen ignored the German scene to a high degree, recording the British and US acts, visiting Geermany. So, it's a fact that whenever they want to produce a new docu about the German Rock scene from the 60's and 70's, you can be sure seeing the all familiar faces and listening to the all familiar music. They have archived only the top of the German iceberg. They don't have pictures and sounds of the big rest.
The 70's brought an explosion of German Rock and now we have in the first line the University cities and in the second line those smaller cities (and some villages) which hadn't been on the road map of the early years. Those bands played Prog in the majority, Prog with all sub-genres (JazzRock, Psychedelic Prog, Sci-Fi/Space Rock / Folk Prog...). Most of these bands have only a small disco, 2 or 3 albums, because the musicians have other things to do (studying, working). At least, they recognize sooner or later, that the German market was too small for a 5 piece band to earn a living from the music. And they had to compete against the big ones (GB and USA) and the smaller bands (Netherlands, Austria, France) The result was an awful load of 'mayflies', making one or two really good albums and vanished away. One or two band members kept going on with the business, the rest vanished without any trace. Attempts to conquer the British and the US market were made, but without big success (Frumpy, Atlantis, Faust, Eloy...). Only a few bands developed to international (top) acts (Kraftwerk, Can, Scorpions, Blind Guardian, Rammstein...)

Yes, I had his book in mind, but as you could have read, this wasn't the main reason. The role of the big cities is everywhere else the same, you can have a hit with 'Chattanooga Cha Cha', but you are no hit when living there. The big cities and the role of the German (federal) broadcasting companies (the little things that they have done) were important for the development of the German Rock scene.
If you are old enough, you know how important the role of TV was in those days (Top of the Pops, Beat Club, Disco and whatever the name was in the different countries). We were talking of the days without internet, with only a few broadcasting companies, with only a few youth-culture papers (divided into more and most less serious publications). I remember very well a time in the later 70's when me and my friends try to get handmade printed 'Fanzines' for information about 'Underground Bands' (as we called it) or black Blues Bands and alternative Rock (national and international). We were in contact with small labels, publishing and mail order companies. Thousands of LP's behind my back (in the very moment) indicate the success, we had in those years before I got internet in the later 80's.

RYP, Sinistra (Action Packed, Bikini Stacked) was released in a limited edition of 300 CDs in 2007. It featured Kim & Dan, along with a guest appearance by Marshall & a song by Mark. I know a number of them were lost/destroyed. Let me do a little poking around to see what I can find.
